Macbook pro harddrive is full.

I have a 3TB Time Capsule and for some reason it won't back up to the Time Capsule so instead it backs up to my internal harddrive on my Macbook Pro and it is now full.  I know that there is a way to make your computer stop backing up to the local harddrive by typing something into the terminal but I can't remember what it is, can anyone help me?

If your Time Capsule isn't backing up properly, I wouldn't disable those local snapshots: I'd find the root (no pun intended) reason why the TC isn't working. I use Time Machine, but on an external drive, so I can't tell you much about TC. You might want to take a look at Pondoni's Time Machine FAQs at http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html. He has some information there regarding TC's and TM in general.
Rather than risk losing valuable data, I'd re-enable TM local snapshots unless your drive is just really FULL and won't function properly. Your real problem isn't Time Machine, from what you write, but rather your Time Capsule. I would get it checked out ASAP if you can't find the answers that you need from Pondoni.

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop.  How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

The hard drive on my Macbook Pro is getting full (mainly due to the size of my iTunes library). Can I store it on my time capsule and if so, how is it done ?

You can store your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.  So that you can access on your local (home) network (I wouldn't recommend access via the internat), (off site.....to slow).
If you do decide to put your libray on Time Capsule I'd recommend doing this.
    Option 1:
    1.  Don't use TC as a Backup (Time Machine).
    2.  Connect a USB drive to your TC or Computer and backup to the  drive. Backup when a change is made to the library (adding Apps, Songs you get the idea).
    Option 2:  (What Im doing)
    1.   Two Time Capsule's connected via ethernet cable (roaming mode, bridge).
    2.   Use TC1 as a Time Machine backup
    3.   Use TC2 as network drive.  (The information on TC2 does NOT get backed up to TC1).
3a. Connect a USB, FW, drive to your desktop computer (if you have one) use SilverKeeper to schedule backups.       Silverkeeper will look at TC2 and back it up to a external or internal HD.  I've been doing the or some time now.  Or connect to your TC and do an archive.
I have this setup because I don't trust Cloud base services and I want access to my files (in Sync) on TC where ever I am, as long as there's a internet connection.  It's expensive, but does exactly what I expect.
The most important thing is to safe guard your data in case of a failure.
In your situation it would probably be better to get a high speed SD or thumb drive, however I've never been successful in backing up those type of drives with TM.  What ever you decide to do make sure you have a GOOD duplicate (backup).

  • I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and I'm wondering if I install Windows 7 Ultimate to this MacBook Pro with this Full Retail Version. And if so, which bit to use either 32-bit or 64-bit since I have both disks.

    64 bit.
32 bit won't use all your computer's ram.
64 bit allows you to run 32 bit programs
    Your computer is 64 bit
    New programs use 64 bit.
There is no reason to use the 32 bit version of Windows.

  • Macbook pro had a full startup disc and crashed

Hi, need help! My macbook pro had a full startup disc and crashed, I have since deleted a lot of files to clear space (23gb+) but now I can only get it to boot up in safe mode. I've run disc utility and the HD is fine also ticked all the login items to disable them (I think) in the Users and Groups. It did reboot normally once after doing this but soon froze up again after 5 or 10 mins. I think it is a 3rd party extension issue but how do I find it?

"Ticking" the login item only hides it. It's still loading. You need to select it then click the - sign. You should probably start there, the other stuff is more involved.

  • After backing up the 2008 macbook pros harddrive the iphoto pictures are all gone!

A third party company made a backup of my 2008 Macbook pro by taKing the hard drive out of my 2008 macbook pro the videocard broke and i had nochange to do the backup by my own :( so i needed to go somewhere specialized and i paid 125$ for getting the conete harddrive backed up including all my photos music documents. After all the repairs from apples side were done i felt that the harddrive sounded kind of bad so i went back to the apple store and they told me they have to replace the hardrive and if i have an backup which i thought i had, so that was 2 days ago. As i got my macbook pro back from Apple i brought it to thd place who made my backup. All was saved on their extrernal hardrive but all my photos (iphoto) are gone :( they cannot find them anymore on the drive Nd they couldn't do anything for me :( now my macbook is fixed but all my memmories i kept as pictures are gone and i spent 125$ for a backing up my pictures and now they are all gone :( is there anybody out there who may can halp me tell me what to try ? Maybe my old harddrive where did apple sent it to? May i can get it back or could it be on the. Backup drive but under the library or iphoto folders are just some pictures :( like 500 . But there is one corrupt file which i also cannot open :(
I need help :( thank you

    1. Reinstalling iPhoto has no effect on your photos. The iPhoto application is totally seperate from your iPhoto library
    2. Is you backed up correctly and restored correctly nothing would change
    3. Given your report it is clear that you dopi somethinfpg incorrectly. However since you do not tell how you backed up or how you restored it is impossible to guess what you did wrong or if itpt is possible to fix
    4. Exactly step by step howvdid you back up your iPhoto library and exactly how did you restore it?
    5. Do you have a TimeMachine backup or clone of your iPhoto library from before you did this?
    6. What version of iPhoto '11?  There are many different versions

  • MacBook Pro - Very slow, Full RAM, Fan is constantly on - With EtreCheck, etc.

Hello everyone! Thank you all in advance for any type of help or advice, I appreciate it a lot.
    I am using:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2
Processor 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
Macintosh HD has 294,08 GB free (out of 499,25 GB)
I am a student, using my MacBook constantly during the day. Applications that I use daily - Safari, Word, Outlook and Finder are always on; a lot of the time I am also using Photoshop CS6, Skype.
Ever since the update to OS X Yosemite my MacBook did slow down noticeably. I left this issue unattended as I was using uni computer at the time. Recently I returned to the actual studies and design work on my MacBook. I couldn't cope with how slow it was, ended up in forums looking for the solution. I tried a couple of things already (was restarting/shutting down computer in-between these tasks):
    1. Disabled FileVault (it was on for moths, I had no idea of what it is), completed the decryption process (it took around 10 hours).
    2. After that I ran EtreCheck, that found a couple of actual and potential issues, I more or less sort it out, will attach the new report in the end of the post.
    3. Tried to disable Spotlight to affect mds, not sure it worked.
    4. Moved to Trash apps I wasn't using, properly uninstalled only a couple of them. Emptied trash.
    5. Erased Safari history that emptied about 500MB of RAM, but then it went back to almost 3.98GB full out of 4GB.
At the moment I only have Safari on and kernel_task takes 570MB of memory, used RAM is 3,88GB out of 4GB.
Fan is constantly on, MacBook is very slow. If I understand correctly RAM is the main issue, unfortunately being a student I am not able to buy and install more memory. I also understand that Photoshop takes a lot of RAM memory, what can I do about it? Photoshop is a crucial app for me.
Is there a way to free some of the RAM memory and make my Macbook faster? Would a clean Yosemite install help? (Can Yosemite at all perform properly on a MacBook with only 4GB memory? What will help it run faster?)

Let Spotlight finish indexing your HDD.  Stopping it is pointless.
Regarding the fans, it is always running when you turn on the MBP.  It is a question of how fast. If there are light loads on the CPU, the fans should be near silent.  If otherwise, try a SMC reset.
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If that does not slow the speed at very light loads then there are other reasons that need to be explored.
If you cannot instal;l additional RAM (your MBP will accept up to 16GB) then you will have to accept slower performance.  Yosemite is a RAM glutton.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are Owc and Crucial.
Time Machine or any other backup is only necessary if the data you have on your MBP is important.  Ask yourself this question:  What will be the degree of inconvenience should the internal HDD fail?  All hard drives eventually fail.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro stopped displaying full resolution on Dell U2713HM monitor

    Hey guys,
I'm using the late 2013" retina Macbook Pro with OSX Mavericks.
I've been using a Mini DP to DP cable to output full 2560 x 1440 on my 27" Dell U2713HM.
One day while I had that monitor plugged in, I also plugged in my HDTV via HDMI for an extra screen. When I did that, it set my Dell to 1080p and ever since then I cant seem to change the resolution back to its native res.
When I go to the display options for this monitor, under "Scaled Resolutions", the entire section is blank. It gives me nothing to choose from. I've restarted my computer a few times, plugged the cable into the other Thunderbolt port, nothing.
I've tried new cables and went to the Apple Store and they did a PRAM reset. It seemed to work fine when they hooked up a Thunderbolt display to it. But I just cant get my Dell to go full res again. I tried the first cable on another mac and a PC and both let me view it in full resolution. Just not my Mac.
Any advice? It makes no sense why it was working perfectly fine for a long time and then completely refuses to do so only on mine.

I have the same setup - late 2013 macbook pro with Dell u2713hm. I've tried connecting with both a mini dp cable to dp (as included with the dell monitor) and also a hdmi cable and I get a strange result - I get full resolution but it looks terrible - pixalated and faded.
I also have a macbook from around 2009 which I can connect using a dp-dvi adapter and then the dual dvi connector that came with the monitor. It gets a lower resolution but actually looks better.
Any ideas? Have you seen this issue with your setup (which seems the same as mine).
    Thanks,

  • How to get MacBook Pro to recognize full 1366x768 resolution of Plasma?

When I hook up my MacBook Pro via DVI to my 1366 x 768 pixel Samsung plasma screen, the computer recognizes it as a Samsung PDP at 1024x768. The resulting image is stretched to fit the full 1366 horizontal pixels and thus ruins the aspect ratio. I know that I can switch the display mode on the Samsung to display 4x3 with black bars on the side, but what I really want is for the computer to take advantage of the full 1366x768. How do I do that?

Check your documentation. Most Samsung 1366x768 monitors do not support the full native resolution in DVI mode unless using a specific card to drive them made by PixelPerfect Digital.
I'm not entirely sure why that may be, but it does figure prominently in the product information on the Samsung product site.

  • Macbook Pro Harddrive Broken?

    Hi all,
I appreciate you're all busy people - but if you had a second, some advice would be brilliant. (Also - apologies in advance for being a hardly a tech genius).
I have a MacBook Pro (2010), not sure of which version of OS X, and during normal internet surfing crashed. On starting the machine back up I only got to the grey screen with apple logo and spinning grey wheel. A loading bar then appeared however only loaded a tiny bit before crashing.
I have no files/data I care about on the machine, I'd just love to have it working again!
    Initial attempts made to rectify:
         - Safe Boot (Shift)
                   - Unsuccessful
         - Resetting PRAM & NVRAM (P)
                   - Unsuccessful
    Last attempt
         - OSX Internet Recovery (Command-R)
                   - Loaded Disk Utility, I then followed online advice about how to try to repair my hardrive, but the hardrive comes up in red coloured font on the left window                and says it cannot be repaired. I then tried to repair a part of it (I think) by erasing to zero out once which took about 2 hours, but still hasnt fixed the                overall problem I dont think.
My incredibly naive take on this is that my harddrive is knackered and needs replacing and I need to re-install an operating system. Is this correct? If so any idea which hardrive/how much it might be? (Also - I haven't got my previous copy of OSX - is it easy/cheap to get one??)
    Any assistance would be brilliant.
    Thanks for your time guys,
    Andrew.

Macs use regular 2.5" SATA IDE hard disk, so finding a replacement should be no problem. Try to remove the hard disk and get a similar size hard disk to make sure it will fit. Try to connect the hard disk to another computer, preferably a Mac. If possible, reformat the hard disk. Install the reformatted hard disk back  (or new hard disk, if the old hd cannot be salvaged) then install new OS X. OS X 10.9 Maverick is free, 2010 MacBook Pro should be compatible.
However, if I remember correctly, there's problem with 2010/2011 MacBook Pro's heat sensor. The faulty sensor will shut down the Mac when it detect (falsely) an over-heat. If that's the case, try to find out if your MacBook is eligible for free replacement/repair -- since it's a motherboard problem, it'll be very difficult to repair by yourself.

  • Mainstage 2.1 makes my Macbook Pro fans run full bore.

Upgraded to V. 2.1 and Snow Leopard. Now my Macbook Pro fan kicks in at full blast whenever I play any patches or run backing tracks. Cpu hit looks low and memory usage is average. This never happened before. Any ideas as to what's happening?

My MBP fans have always run at full capacity when using MS 1, 2 or 2.1. They start out running normally but then start to rev up after a couple of minutes. You could try running some fan control software to manually adjust your fan thresholds but ultimately, does it really matter if the fans are running hard? Seems to me that they're running hard because they need to....MS is still very hard on system resources even if the meters say otherwise. It's the only app I run that causes the fans to run flat-out.

  • Help my MacBook Pro memory is full. What options do I have?

My 250gb hard drive is full on my MacBook Pro and I don't understand what is taking up all of my memory.  I have gone threw and moved everything I want to keep to an external hard drive so here is my question. Can I factory restore my MacBook and just click and drag all my files over on the new system from the hard drive?  Or what would your best suggestions be for me?  My computer just started Running really sluggish as of late. My MacBook was bought January 2010 and I'm running Lion operating system other than that I don't know a lot about my system.
    Thanks for the help.

You could buy and install a larger capacity hard drive. Also buy an enlcosure for your 'old' drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to your new. See https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122.
250GB should really be 'enough' room, but if you're running into problems with that capacity, it's just time to set up to a larger drive. I would recommend visiting OWC for both your drive and an enclosure.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
