MacBook Pro has a "hiccup" or short freezes

I have an early 2009 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.5. Over the past month it's developed an annoying "hiccup" or sorts. The Mac freezes for a 2 seconds every 10 minutes or so. For example: 1) scrolling down a webpage I encounter a temporary freeze, 2) when typing text the letters stop appearing for 2 seconds, then the entire word(s) that were lagging appear. I have run Onyx but the problem persists. I can't think of any software I have installed that would cause this problem. Happens after a cold boot, reboot or anytime, really. Any idea what's causing this. It does not affect video or music playback.

Only a Bluetooth mouse. Oddly enough, when I turn it off the problem stops. I wonder what it is about Bluetooth that caused this hiccup.

Hello! Ever since I downloaded the latest update from Apple on My Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.3, my macbook pro has been freezing / hanging every 5 minutes. Its very frustrating and irritating. For 30 odd seconds the machine just feezes and then starts working normally.
What do I do?

Macbook Pro 2009 Electric static Shock, then freezes

My Macbook Pro has been acting up. It's dry in the winter, and I expect static shocks from things, but having it freeze afterward *****.
If I touch any part of the MacBook Pro (even the screen), and get a shock, then the mouse will freeze, and the computer will lock up. It's still actually running, because I can hear my music, or audio from the movie.
If I press the reboot button, I get the [restart] [shutdown] [cancel] menu, but can not do anything with it.
All I can do is Press and Hold the reboot button, and start over.
I never know when I'm going to get a shock, and now I'm afraid to touch my mac if I step away (even for a few seconds).
I have to keep one hand in contact with the mac at all times to avoid this issue.

I've been experiencing the EXACT same issue for a few weeks now, multiple times a DAY. One theory my partner had was that I was perhaps too electrically charged (given the dry weather, my wearing fleece all the time, and all the carpet in the apt), but that the charge could be released by touching a piece of metal. I happened to have a stainless steal ruler on my desk so I've been resting my hand(s) on it intermittently and it's been working wonders so far. No more static for over a day now (this may sound insignificant, but after having to force shut down and restart the MBP multiple times a day, it's such a relief).
Of course, I do not want to be carrying around the ruler where ever I go w/ the MBP and this shouldn't be happening anyway, so I called Apple Care (still have my coverage). I told the "genius" about my "solution" to the static issue. He stated that while it was great that I got the static to stop (for now) this should not be happening. He suggested I take out the battery, unplug the power cord, and then hit the power button for about 5 seconds. Then place the battery back in its place, plug back the power cord, and use the laptop again and see if the problem persists. If it does, go see an Apple "genius" in person.
So I've followed the "genius'" instructions.
My next step: Stop resting my hands on the ruler and test if the static returns. If so, I will bring my MBP to a "genius" at an Apple store. I'll keep you posted.

Are you running andy anti-virus or "cleaning" software? Both can shorten battery life and run up the temps.
Take a look at this Apple article:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
Note in Step 3 you need to make a change if running Mavericks. In Mav, Activity Monitor's "Show All Processes" function moved from the application window to the application menubar:
Setting to "All Processes" is the only sure way to catch some suspects. Not noted in the article is this: AM won't tell you much if you run it shortly after a restart. Use your computer as normally as possible for at least a half-day before running the test. Also not clear is that you should be looking for any process that uses more than about 10 percent of the cycles. I've checked a lot of Macs with AM and, assuming you quit any user applications you started (other than AM) nothing should be a percentage larger than a single digit in a healthy Mac.

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left my icons stuck on the right side of the desktop. I want to move them but there is no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Suggestions?

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful. The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.

I have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable.

Turn off Find My iPhone in iCloud on the iDevice.
Log out of iMessage, Facetime, remove Apple ID from iTunes & App Store.
Use Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
Then set it up as a new iPhone with your own Apple ID.

Recently my Macbook Pro has become sort of lagging. The lagging is sort of intermittent, but is possibly becoming more frequent. Sometimes when I type, it takes a while to catch up and gives me the rainbow wheel mouse while this happens. I have been getting the rainbow wheel thing a lot lately due to lagging in typing or clicking a link and it takes (seemingly) forever to load (based on how fast it used to be). Sometimes when I scroll using the trackpad (my main method of scrolling), it takes a while to actually scroll. When I open a new tab, what should be my top sites sometimes is a distorted/pixelated picture of black or black and white or whatever was on the screen previously. I am also having a lot of flash problems: I'll be using the internet and then randomly the flash will just close and I'll get an apple pop-up saying that my flash program unexpectedly closed and I should send a report to apple. I refresh the page and the flash is working fine, but the closing will still randomly happen. I use my macbook pro mainly for internet use and microsoft office use since I am a student. This only started recently and I haven't used any microsoft office products since before this started so I have really just been using Safari (it's been a while since I've used firefox also). Therefore, I don't believe an application is causing this. As I am typing this, I ran a software update and found that 10.6.8 is available. I think I will hold off until I get a few responses on this discussion. This computer is JUST over three years (my extended warranty just ran out... of course).

Iphoto on my macbook pro has stopped working. It comes up with a message saying that the library is either being used by another user or it is unreadable. Any ideas why I should be receiving this message?

Iphoto on my macbook pro has stopped working. It comes up with a message saying that the library is either being used by another user or it is unreadable. Any ideas why I should be receiving this message?

Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.

You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My MacBook Pro has 10.5.8 but came with 10.5.7 install disc and won't boot up and can't reinstall.
the disc is spinning and I see the apple on the screen with the spinning gear and after a while it just turns off OR the few times it does get past that point when I go into disc utility it tells me that it can not install on this machine!
It's driving me crazy, please help!!!

Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.
