Macbook pro has no sound

I'm having a very strange thing happen on my Macbook Pro.  When I turn on the macbook, I get the opening chime and then after that, there is no sound at all.  When i increase the volume or decrease, the indicators go up and down, but still no sound.  Can anyone explain what might be happening?

Was able to go to this posting and look at my system preferences and this seemed to do the trick.  Seemed like after I used LogMeIn on my iPad, it set my audio to something else.

  • MacBook Pro has no sound at all. Called Apple and they said to reinstall OS X.

I have recently discovered that my MacBook Pro has no sound except for the startup chime. I called Apple and they told me to reinstall OS X because something went wrong in the OS. Is there any other way to fix this?

That's a really overly simplistic answer to your problem. Re-installing OS X doesn't always fix every problem. Yes, it might in your case, but it might not. Are you still under warranty? Either way, I'd take it into your local Apple Store and show them the problem and let them fix it. If the system has to be installed anew, so be it. But rule out other problems first.
Before you do anything, make sure that you have a back-up of your data, applications, etc. If you don't already have a back-up scheme, get an external hard drive and use Time Machine to back up your computer. Then take it into the Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My MacBook Pro has no sound, but the volume setting works

My 15' MacBook Pro 2012's sound is not working. You can still change the volume by pressing F10 to F12, but not actual sound comes out. The headphone jack is not red (although I have experienced that problem before and fixed it). Whether the headphones are plugged in or if they aren't, there is still no sound. I am running on OS X 10.7.5 with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory and the storage capacity is 749.3 GB total.

Have you tried a PRAM reset?

  • Macbook pro has no sound, any ideas on the cause?

My macbook pro crashed while watching a video and since then has not had any sound coming from the speakers, although it did emit the startup sound when I restarted it.

One of these steps may help.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • My MacBook Pro has no sound, even with Apple headphones plugged in...

My Macbook Pro won't play any sound from both it's own speakers or any speaker I plug it into. This has me very worries, please help.

If a PRAM reset fails to correct the problem, bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar:

  • MacBook Pro has no sound, no way to adjust volume, and will not play music.

My MacBook Pro seems to have lost all of its audio functions.  I cannot adjust my volume using the keyboard controls, or through the button at the top of my desktop screen, or even through System Preferences.  I get the normal volume adjust screen, but it is faded, and there is a symbol over it indicating that I cannot adjust anything.  When I go into the Sounds menu from System Preferences, there is nothing for me to select under Input or under Output.  My computer makes no noise, whether I'm using iTunes, watching a video, or anything.  I cannot play music.  My songs simply won't start, and when I skip to any given part of a song, the music still refuses to play.  I am not getting the red light from my headphone port.  I tried to remove any dust that may have collected in the headphone port, and I've even tried to reset my NVRAM and PRAM.  I also updated to OS X Mavericks 10.9.2.  Nothing helped.  I remember that my MacBook was working perfectly fine all of yesterday, but at one point later in the evening, I tried to plug in my headphones to play music, but nothing would play.  I opened Spotify, and it gave me a message that my speakers were broken (I was using the internal speakers).  That's when I first noticed the issue.  Is there anything else I can try before going to the Apple Store and having them try to fix it? Thank you very much, I appreciate any help.

The last gasp is an OSX reinstall.  If that fails, then the genius bar is the best option.
    Ciao.

I have the following issue - I noticed my Mac is trying to connect to some Air Play things (have no idea what is that; happens after the update to Yo 10.10.2) and the problem is it has no sound - I attached some files.

    1. System Preference > Sound > Output
       Internal Speakers selected?
    2. Try Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    3. If there is red light visible in the headphone port  plug the head phone into and out of the port
couple of times to flip the microswitch inside. Sound may be stuck in digital mode.
    4. Reinstalling  iTunes may help sometimes.

  • Macbook pro has no sound feedback after yosemite install

Got Yosemite installed and for some reason there was no sound when increasing/decreasing the volume through the keys or the slider. I tried to hear a youtube video but it was not working, I am using chrome so could see that there was sound on the video as there was an icon on the web page tab. I re-started and went to the system preferences>sound and found that by default in the general section, the sound feedback is disabled. I did not test the sound after the re-start so i dont know if there were two issues, but enabled the sound feedback and now I can hear the volume when moving the slider, also the music is playing fine through the internal speakers.

    1. System Preference > Sound > Output
       Internal Speakers selected?
    2. Try Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
       Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. If there is red light visible in the headphone port  plug the head phone into and out of the port
couple of times to flip the microswitch inside. Sound may be stuck in digital mode.
    4. Reinstalling  iTunes may help sometimes.
    Best.

Turn off Find My iPhone in iCloud on the iDevice.
Log out of iMessage, Facetime, remove Apple ID from iTunes & App Store.
Use Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
Then set it up as a new iPhone with your own Apple ID.

My MacBook Pro has no audio.  Sounds preferences showing output is Optical digital-out port.  How do I change this to built-in speakers?

I experienced this same problem yesterday on my MacBook Pro,  still searching for a solution, several other posts here indicate people have been experiencing this since at lease 2007.  I have  yet to find a clear solution.
It appears that occasionally inserting headphone causes this, it turns on the Optical digital-out port feature (red light glows inside the headphone port) and takes away the internal speakers option.   Restarting did not restore it, but for some reason after sitting asleep overnight the sound started working again and the internal speaker option return in the Sound - Output Window, and the Optical Digital-out option went away.
Here is another post with some ideas on this

  • My macbook pro has stop playing sounds

I have a relatively new macbook pro and the sound isn't working there is no supposed "red light" problem that most seemed to have, the volume icon shows at full and nothing plays, I went into system preferences under sound to check if everything was alright and it was.. my mac is only less than month and hasn't been dropped or damaged in any way...? any help

    try to reset the SMC
    - turn the computer off and make sure the power is plugged in
    - then on the left side of the keyboard, hold down the shift, control, and option keys
    - while they are held down, press the power button.
