MacBook Pro HD Dead for only one portion

Hey everyone,
Yesterday night my MacBook Pro was working just fine, when my safari just froze up out of the blue. I couldn't move anything in safari so I just went to the apple button and clicked restart my macintosh. When the computer restarted it did the bong noise pulled up the gray screen and the gray apple appeared. Once it appears the spinning wheel appears and then it sits like that for around 5 min and just turns itself off.
My Hard drive is partitioned to hold both leopard and windows. I held down the alt/option key and I'm able to select which disk I want to boot. I click windows and Windows loads just fine. I do a normal restart on Windows Vista and the computer shuts down and restarts. I attempt the same thing only clicking the Macintosh HD and it repeats the same thing above with the apple and the spinning wheel to only have itself turn off.
I tried about 10 times when I finally put in the Leopard Disk and held down "c" when I started my mac back up. It booted the Disk after holding c down for about 3 min and I could do a fresh install or use any of the utilities in the Disk.
I then tried disk utility. When disk utility appears it takes a REALLY long time for the Macintosh HD to appear. I click to verify the disk. I starts up normal and then after 3 min I get an error in red saying the disk can not be verified. I've done this several times to no avail.
Now I'm able to go to the restore portion and drag my Mac HD and my External HD to back this up but when I begin it gives me the message that Macintosh HD can not be restored. So I click the Image button to select the image I want to restore on the Mac HD and I can see all my files that are saved on there. So what I need help with is how to remove the files from the broken HD on my mac and just move all the files that are in my /Users/Bennett/Documents location.
I have tried using terminal but maybe I'm not doing it right. I have some knowledge of computers but not enough to know how to back up my Documents from a slightly un-usable hd. If anyone has ANY recommendations at all it would be greatly appreciated.
(Also if there is a way to view the files on the MAC partition of my HD from Winodws Vista while using boot camp could I move the files this way?)

Exactly how did you use Disk Utility in safe mode when the drive was not showing up? Did you successfully boot into safe mode? If so, then the drive isn't dead.
Did you boot the computer from the Recovery HD? Is that where you used Disk Utility? If you can boot to the Recovery HD, then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.  I see both machines on both airdrop windows. Firewalls on both machines are set exactly the same way, and with Network Browser set to allow.  Can send a file from Mac mini to MacBook, but not the other way.  Never get a window asking to accept on the Mac mini.
Found no useful documentation on AirDrop anywhere in the whole support site.

Maybe this will work. From an Apple support article.
You can also use the Share button to send files to your neighbors via AirDrop. In a Finder window, select the item you want to share, and then click the Share button in the toolbar. For more information about the Share button, see this help topic:

  • My MacBook pro turn on for about one minute then it turn off automatically in this minute it took me to a gray screen how could I resolve this problem thanks

my problem is that I can't turn on my Mac when I turn it on it take me to a gray screen which have an apple in the middle of the page and under the apple there is a small loading box which can't reach to the middle of the box

It might be an issue with your HD.  Run Disk Utility from your installation disk and "Varify" your Macintosh HD to see if there any issues.  Hopefully you have a backup of your data.
After runing "Varify" see if Disk Utility's "Repair" can repair the problems if they exist.
If there's nothing wrong with the HD try "Repair disk Permissions"
    Best of luck

after i have downloaded an album from iCloud to my new macbook pro. Itunes will only play one song at a time. If i hit the fast forward or back button will not do anything. I have to use the mouse to hit the next tidal in the album then hit play for it to play the next song. Or put it in the UP NEXT.

First, make sure these items have checkmarks next to their names in iTunes. Continuous playback only works on checked items. Itunes will play all checked items in a list whether or not they're from the same album.
If you see that nothing in your library is checked and you want to check everything, hold down Ctrl while checking an item. This checks everything.
Next, fixing the "1 of 1" problem is easily. Select all the tracks that make up the book/album. Let's say there are 15. Press Ctrl-I. Doublecheck that the album box is filled in with the name of the book, and if not, type it there. Enter "15" in the box for the total number of tracks. Click OK. Now all the items should be "1 of 15," "2 of 15," and so on.

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.

What cable do I need for a full migration from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a new current one-wireless migration way too slow.?

All you need is an Ethernet cable.
Just plug it into both machines. Don't bother with a crossover cable, just a plain old Ethernet cable will do. The Ethernet ports on the Macs are smart and will adjust appropriately.

As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • I have 8 gb on my macbook pro, but it sometimes only recognizes 4 gb. Whats going on?

I have 8 gb on my macbook pro, but it sometimes only recognizes one of the banks and thus only 4 gb. I was about to open my Macbook Pro mid 2010 2.66 up but it went back up to 8 gb of ram.
I also noticed that the macbook would go to sleep and not wake up again, sometimes. Not sure if this is related.
I did the usual, resetting the PRAM and the other thing with "shift control option." It didn't work and kept on saying 4 gb.
I woke up this morning ready to break open the mac when it read 8 gb. Great! But the **** is going on. Is that memory slot loose?
My google search and search through these forums were useless, no solutions. One guy tried changing his memory into the two banks, no difference. Sometimes it recognizes bank 1 sometimes it doesn't. Another put his ram in another computer, it's not the ram. Someone suggested the motherboard, then someone said "no way" for some arcane reason.
The only solution that seamed viable was going back to snow leopard, the last great OS. Im on mountain lion, not to shabby, but no leopard.
Problem is that I am out of warranty.
    Any suggestion would be helpful.

    why don't you try this:
open the back of your Macbook - if you're technically capable...
take the ram out, clean it up with a pencil eraser - blow it out - put them back in, slowly and in a slight angle until they lock into place - make sure they are seated correctly...
restart your macbook - if the same bank is still not detecting - then the issue is your RAM slot...
    good luck

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
    Good luck!

After posting my concern/question, especially in regards to the optical drive, I read this on this forum:
    Jul 11, 2011 5:21 AM
I would like to update my macbook pro from Tiger to Snow Leopard, but my optical drive is not working. Can I take my macbook pro into the apple store and have them install it via a portable drive?

Another poster replied, "Yes, I believe they will."
Is this true? Can someone verify this?  Any idea of cost?  I really don't need my optical drive.  Besides, end of year, I'm getting a new Mack Book Pro.

  • MacBook Pro RMA Procedure for Apple Canada?

Hi everyone. I am new to the world of macs and is wondering if you guys can help me.
I've bought a macbook pro through apple.ca. Unfortunately the MacBook Pro is dead on arrival. I called AppleCare and they say they would offer me a RMA and send me a replacement.
I am confused by the RMA procedure though. I only got an email from them after the phone call:
    Dear Apple Customer,
    Thank you for contacting Apple.

Please pack the item in its original box using the original packing

Does this mean I have to pay shipping to return the defective MBP? I also can't find anyway to track the shipping of my replacement model. How does this work? Do I have to send them back the defective unit first then they will send me the replacement model? Or do I wait for the replacement model to arrive then send the defective unit back to them?
Sorry for so many questions. I would really appreciate if someone that has similar experience before can tell me what's going on. I am a little mad about this since I paid express shipping for the MBP and I can't use it.

You may receive a seperate email with a shipping label; that's how it works in the U.S., at least. As soon as Apple has confirmation that the machine has been given to the carrier, they release the new order.
