Macbook pro hd is failing

The harddrive in my 15" macbook pro / 2.53 ghz / 4gb / 250gb (runs snow leopard) is failing... there is no apple store on the hawaiian island that i live on.
does anyone know if/how i can use a second computer to boot my macbook pro as a hd (w firewire?) in order to recover data before replacing the hd?

do you know if there is any advantage to either of the two modes of recovery?
Firewire target mode would be the preferable method, since it's more immediate if you have the right cable handy.  However, I've had instances where an older machine and a newer machine were unable to connect this way.  So, if it doesn't work, you'll need to fall back to removing the drive.
also... (not sure what the etiquette is on posting 2 separate questions on one thread) can you recommend a replacement drive? i'm thinking to go with a 1tb? hitachi? or maybe solid state drive?
It's a related question, so no problem.  I tend to like buying from Other World Computing, I trust the stuff they sell.  Here's the appropriate page:

I have no afflilation with them, just a satisfied customer.

Remove Chrome (and Google Drive if you have it). Higher temps when using Netflix are normal, Silverlight (which Netflix uses) is a resource hog, get used to it or stop using Netflix.
Let's see what else you are running. Download a copy of Etrecheck and run it. Post the report here.

What you can do is to extract the hard drive from your old computer, put it in an enclosure and connect it to your newer computer, so you can restore your data.
It's not too difficult to do it yourself, but if you think you will do something wrong, take it to a store where you can get your data restored

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drives Failing

    Hi all,
I've been having massing problems with my Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 Ghz laptop. I got one brand new with apple care in December of 2008. The hard drive was the standard 320 Gb @ 5400 RPM.
Within approximately two weeks of operation the computer failed (froze and after a hard shutdown wouldn't boot). It turned out the hard drive failed. Two weeks! So I took it back to Apple and they replaced the hard drive (took them one week so I lost a week of productivity).
One week after receiving the laptop back, the hard drive failed again! This time I believe the OS got corrupted somehow as the symptom was that it would not boot.
So back to Apple and they straight out replaced it with a new one. One week later, guess what? Failure. So back again and they replaced it.
I'm now on my 3rd laptop from Apple and this hard drive is failing. Luckily I was able to back everything up. I downloaded a utility called SMART Utility and it tells me 60 some sectors are bad on this disk.
Is anyone else having issues like this? Its absolutely ridiculous. Currently the computer is working despite the failed sectors and horrible sounds coming from the hard drive but I expect failure soon. I'll be taking this back to Apple and showing them the results of the SMART Utility, but I'm at the end of the rope here.
I've owned multiple Macbook Pros before and absolutely loved them. But now I am so disillusioned by this... To Apple's credit they have had great customer service, but now I'm at the point where I need to be able to rely on my machine.
    Has anyone heard anything?

I would second Michael's comment. While hard drives do fail, the rate at which yours are failing would appear to be well beyond the statistical average. I would generally think the next level would be a problem with the MacBook itself causing the failures, but from what I can tell from your comment is that they have replaced your MacBook twice (and you're on your third?). So that would seem to rule out a problem with the MacBook itself. You mentioned that you've had other MacBooks before and it doesn't sound like you've had problems with them... so I wouldn't expect that you're doing anything unusual that would cause the problem.
You're either had a remarkable run of bad luck, or there's something going on that's out of the ordinary causing these drives to fail. I would imagine that when stores get machines, they're likely shipped from batches that are manufactured at similar times. If they had a batch of faulty drives from the manufacturer, it's possible a single store could have gotten several of them. That would still not really explain why your initially replaced drive failed as it would likely have come from a totally different batch than what would have been used in manufacturing at the time your notebook was put together. I guess it's always possible that they might put in a drive that that wasn't new.

  • Macbook Pro hard drive failed, data recovery possible?

    Hi everyone,
I have a 13 inch MBP i purchased in 2010. Late last year I experienced some issues with the computer generally slowing down and one day it would not start up, getting to the gray screen with the apple logo and loading wheel. Contacting apple support I was talked through the process of copying my hard drive contents onto an external harddrive, re installing the operating system, and then copying the contents from the external hard drive back to my internal hard drive. Then after up dating the operating system (I think to snow leopard :S) I took it to a genius bar appointment and the guy did a few tests and said my hard drives looks ok and suggested upgrading the RAM from 4gb to 8gb, which I did with no noticable improvement. But seemed to work ok for another 8 months or so.
So last week after using my MBP alot during end of semester, it suddenly turned off while using google sketch up. I tried restarting a few times which did not help. Then I searched through apple support to find an answer. I managed to get into disk utility, which told me the disk was OK. I then tried to re install my operating system which took a very long time and failed twice before getting no response at all I booked another genius bar appointment.
The guy did some tests a very quickly came to the conclusion that it was my hard drive that had failed. He gave me the option to replace the harddrive for $200, which I think I will do, however as STUPIDLY did not have any of my data backed up, I am desperate to try and recover a few important documents and my iphoto library, so have put off replacing the hard drive until I try to recover my data.
So the apple guy gave me two programs to try and recover my data. He said its a confusing an tedious process especially with no experience but I am willing to give it a go. The two programs are DISC WARRIOR and EASEUS. I know disc warrior costs money and easeus is free. He should me how to boot my MBP into target disc mode, and sold me the appropriate cable (initially a firewire cable, but then told me a thunderbolt cable would be more efficient and was cheaper.. Im sure they are right but can anyone confirm that a thunderbolt cable can be used for what I am trying to do) to connect my MBP in target disc mode, to another macbook pro, and it should connect as an external hard drive. Then with one of these programs try to recover some of my files
He said what I can recover just depends on the extent of the damage to the hard drive and what sections have failed. I am waiting for a friend to use their MBP in a few days to download one of these programs and connect my MBP.
Does anyone have any experience or advise with using either of these programs recommended by the apple guy or anyother programs that I could use? Or any advice at all in how I should go about trying to recover my files by using another Macbook pro and target disc mode? or anything else that might be helpful?
ANY help would be much appreciated guys!

  • MacBook Pro burn DVD failed even after installing Leopard 10.5.2

Ever since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard my 17in MacBook Pro has failed to burn DVDs.
It managed to burn a couple discs after the upgrade, but soon proceeded to give various error messages whenever I have attempted to burn a DVD. The most common error is:
+Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022)+
This is when using "Burn folders" to write large folders/files onto DVD (+3gig). It always fails about halfway through the disc, so if I write smaller folders it will often complete successfully. CD-Rs generally burn fine too.
I have tried various media and burning apps to no avail.
*I was hoping Leopard Update 10.5.2 would fix this issue, but alas it has not!*
Before I installed the update I had also unsuccessfully tried various solutions offered in this forum, such as resetting the PRAM and creating a new user account.
I would greatly appreciate anyone's insights, solutions or plan of action to resolve this issue. This is my first Mac (a rather expensive investment here in South Africa) and it has been awesome using it up until this point!

what do you suppose is wrong with my macbook pro seeing as the apple store have just replaced a MLB at $945aus because of a failed graphic card. the new one they replaced lasted 4 weeks and again a blank screen.

You have a 90 day warranty after your machine has been repaired. Call the Apple Store/AASP and have them take another look at it.

  • Graphic card on MacBook pro 17 inch fails

    Hello
my MacBook Pro screen stays black and after check up it is the graphic card nvidia which has failed. It was brought to my attention that Apple had a recall on Mac book pro from 2007 and 2008 and I believe mine is one of them. Now the issue is Apple considers this computer vintage, so a third party will have to do the repair. My question to Apple is: will they pay for this repair?

Nope - you're stuck with the Intel 4000. If you wanted a higher-performance GPU, you should have bought a 15".
    Sorry,
    Clinton

  • Quicktime Pro 7.1.5 on MacBook Pro 17inch (Recording failed to create movie

I went into Preferences and changed the camera from the built-in iSight to a USB camera (that works fine with iChat).
When I tried to create a new movie I get the error:

behind the error box I can see a black QT screen.

    MPB 17in - 3GB Ram - 200 GB Mac OS X (10.4.8) I also have a G5

No really this is an Intel only bug. Hopefully someone at Apple reads this.
I have a USB Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000.
On my G5 this will happily record movies in Quicktime, provide images in IChat and work with Photobooth.
On a February 2006 Macbook Pro, IChat works, Photobooth defaults back to the built in iSight (is there any way of changing this??), it even works with Windows on Parallels, but Quicktime fails as described above with the 'Recording failed to create a movie' message.
Both computers are running MacOS X 10.4.9 patched right up to date.
USB cameras must be supported on current systems - the built in iSight is USB connected!!!

  • Macbook Pro disc drive failing to burn DVD-R.

I am using a 2007, 17" Macbook Pro with 10.6.8. My drive information in System Profiler reads as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J:
      Firmware Revision:          FBZ8
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
I am trying to burn an .mp4 video to a DVD in order to test the disc for playback. When I insert the disc, it appears first in the Finder as a blank DVD. I click and drag the video to the DVD and hit "Burn." What follows is an error message:
"'Untitled DVD'" can't be burned because the disck is read-only and can't be modified (error code 0x80020042)."
After that, the disc ejects, and I am back at square one.
I have looked online for similar cases and suggested solutions, but nothing has worked yet. I have verified and repaired my disk permissions via Disk Utility, tried to burn multiple times with different, fresh DVD-Rs, purchased brand new DVD-Rs, and even tried changing the permissions manually via the "Info" panel.
I do not have iDVD or any other third party DVD burning software. In the past, I used iDVD and these very same DVD-Rs to burn a number of student films for playback. At that time, the process was very simple and worked as one might expect it to.
I am wondering if I should just get iDVD or another third party software, but I am reluctant to, because I would think that the OS' built-in burning capability ought to work just as well. Of course, I could easily be mistaken.
    Please help. Thank you.

    Some clarification:
I am not trying to burn a data disc. If that is what I just described, I was unaware that I was attempting to burn a data disc. I am trying to burn a video DVD for playback on a DVD player. If you or anyone here are trying to tell me that I cannot burn a video DVD by performing the process I described, then I will continue to attempt to use the third party software I downloaded instead.
    Further clarification:
The problem does not appear to be with the discs. I began testing this issue using Memorex DVD-Rs that I already own. Until today, I had barely touched the stack. However, because it was technically possible that I was using several coasters that I had forgotten about, I went out and bought some additional DVD-Rs - the Verbatims. It is highly unlikely that both the Memorex stack I already owned and the Verbatim discs I just purchased are both duds. I know for a fact that the Memorex discs should work because I have several archived DVD videos on the very same discs.
The real problem appears to be with the drive and how it is reading the discs. For some reason, it is recognizing them as "read-only" and/or not blank, as System Profiler has shown:
      Media:
      Type:          DVD-R
      ID:          CMC MAG. AM3
      Blank:          No
      Erasable:          No
      Overwritable:          No
      Appendable:          Yes
      Write Speeds:          2x, 4x, 8x
I have attempted to Repair Disk Permissions twice - that has not solved the issue. I am going to attempt an SMC reset next, and if that fails, I will attempt to Repair Disk via the install DVD. Failing all of those options, I guess I'm going to have to visit a Genius Bar.
Thank you all again. Please try to stay with me as I continue handling this issue, as I will provide updates.

  • Macbook pro HD keeps failing! Why?

    Dear All,
I am a big fan of apple products and I've been using them for quite a while! I am glad I am using a macbook pro laptop now at work but I have to admit that my last macbook pro model has died already twice this year due to HD problems!
I've been through some forums and there are a lot of people mentioning problems with Hard Drives of macbook pros.
My macbook has failed me twice this last year one of which was during a very important meeting on a business trip and it seems like its gonna die again!
Both times laptop had crashed randomly and the spinning ball started rotating for quite a while! I restarted my computer and then I got the flashing apple logo which results in HD failure with both times losing all data without apple engineers being able to recover it! Of course I learnt my lesson the first time and I do regular backups now!
Yesterday I decided to do a verify disk permissions to check if everything is ok with my macbook and of course I got a message saying something like:
"The hard disc needs to be repaired, please restart your computer holding cmd + R to access Disc Utility".
I am so scared to restart my computer and I feel like the HD is going to crash again! I have to go to work now and I am definitely not restarting my mac as I need to work.
Some details about my macbook pro:
    It's macbook pro 13" 9,2
latest updates and OS with 16Gb Ram
I don't turn macbook pro off very often sometimes even for 2 weeks it stays on. Is this a big problem?
I've been away on holidays for like a month and my macbook pro was off during that period and I've been using it for only a week now. Is that normal behaviour?
Please advise me as per my actions as I don't need to lose another HD. I did a backup last night. Should I try and repair permissions after restarting my mac?
    Waiting for answers...
    Thanks in advance!

You can check the health of the startup disk anytime anytime without using OS X Recovery.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk   (not Verify Disk Permissions)
This process can take a few minutes.
When it's done, it should say that the disk, "appears to be ok" and make sure S.M.A.R.T. status sayd Verified bottom of the Disk Utility window.
Wouldn't hurt to turn the Mac off more often and do a restart.Reason being is when you startup your Mac you should hear the chimes. If you don't hear the chimes, it means the Mac has not passed it's startup diagnostics tests.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the disk down.

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drive Failed

Hi Everyone, this is going to be a tough one, but please help me.
Two days ago, my computer slowed. So I decided to do a system update, but during the update it got stuck, so i hit the reset button.
Then the laptop did not want to boot, and would get stuck with the apple logo and the circling thing underneath.
So then I entered recovery mode, but the disk utility repair always ended in an error, and installing the OS online wasn't working as well. I inserted my original LION os cds and hit the C button during start up but it wouldn't boot from CD, instead it would end up in recovery.
I bought a firewire-firewire cable, and couldn't access my laptop through target disk mode.
Finally I used disk utility to erase Macintosh HD, restarted and nothing happened. I reentered target disk mode and now I can see my hard disk. This time I erased the GIUD partition table as well, which wiped out my recovery partition.
Now when I restart, its showing a flashing question mark. The command R key does not work. The ALT or C keys also dont do anything anymore, I just end up with a white screen. I can still reset NVRAM, and the good news is I can see the hard drive through the target disk mode from another macbook pro, but thats about it. I ran disk utility's repair disk from my working macbook pro on the non working one, and it comes up okay with no problems. But when ever I restart my computer, I just get a flashing question mark.
Please help me, I just want to have a wokring laptop.

Start the MBP with the original Leopard OSX install disk holding the C key.
Proceed with the instructions until you see a menu bar on top of the display.
Select UTILITIES and from the drop down menu select Disk Utility.
Click on Disk Utility>First Aid and run verify and Repair.
    What are the results?
    Ciao.
