MacBook Pro headphone jack?
Can the headphone jack on a MacBook Pro 17" be repaired or replaced (at not too great a cost)?
Get your friend to pay for the repair that will be necessary to fix the problem at a repair facility.

New MacBook Pro Headphone Jack Issues
Hi, I just got my MacBook Pro barely a week ago and I've noticed an issue when using headphones or external speakers when plugged into the headphone jack. It seems that the computer won't recognize that I have something plugged into the jack, sound just keeps playing through the laptop speakers and not the device connected. I can duplicate this at will:
Play music through headphones plugged into computer, hit pause. Disconnect headphones and play music through laptop speakers, pause music again and connect headphones. Hit play, and the sound continues to play through the laptop speakers and not the headphones... The only way I can remedy this is my restarting my machine (PITA) or by shutting the lid and waking the computer up. (Still a PITA) Is there a fix for this? I'm updated to the most recent version, 10.6.8 . I never had this issue with my old MacBook Pro pre unibody. I've read elsewhere that another solution is to go into System Preferences > Sound and click "Output" and change the setting "use adio port for" from "sound input" to "sound output" I don't even have those settings listed in my Output tab... Please help!Well, the issue has been resolved. The solution was to reset the SMC/PRAM. I thought about doing this but I didn't think I would need to on a brand new computer . At least its back to working order and I didn't have to be without my machine.
To anyone with this issue, just reset the SMC/PRAM

Macbook Pro Headphone Jack, a very strange thing going on with it? help
Hello,
My Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2011 has had this very annoying small issue for over a year with the headphone jack. Sound only plays through the headphone jack as per normal when i restart the laptop, but once i remove the headphones and plug them back in sound isn't going through the headphone, it's going through the speakers as if headphones aren't plugged in, to have it working as normal i have to restart the laptop again.
Is this a hardware or software issue?
Please help me resolve this..
Thanks,
JacobWelcome to Apple Discussions!
Since this is a brand new MBP under warranty, the best thing to do is to contact Apple and tell them about your difficulties. If you have access to an Apple Store, you might want to bring your Mac in and show them what it is doing. This does not sound at all normal, and it's very possible that you have hardware issues involved. If so, you should be eligible for a repair under warranty or possibly even a replacement if you are still in the first 2 weeks of ownership.
There is a long thread which may be relevant:

It's probably too long to read the whole thing, but you might browse the posted images and see if this looks like your problem.

Silica gel stuck in Macbook pro headphone jack
The silica gel packet in my laptop bag exploded (it's a new bag, and I had no idea the packet was in there) and now I've got a bead jammed in headphone ports.
Any suggestions will be appreciated .Hurray issue got solved
Initially I took my MacBook pro to some Apple store but it could not help ,the Apple executive there said that they tried to remove the silica gel but failed to do so . Instead the executive insisted me to replace entire logic board and it will cost around 35,000 rs INR(550 $) I was totally I mean *** .
Then latter I took it to another Apple authorized service center and those guys managed to take the silica gel out
Thanks all for your quick response. -
HT3625 Can't use my MacBook Pro headphone jack as input?
My 13" MBP from June 2012 does not have the "Use audio for:" drop down menu.

Has the feature been removed?Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You are referring to Target Display mode. Target Display mode can only be used in 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt, not MacBooks Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Unfortunately, you can't use the MacBook Pro as a display. It doesn't support the monitor mode -
Macbook pro headphone jack think there something in it
I have a MacBook Pro i bought it 1 year ago, the audio out on it wont turn off and so the speakers on my Mac dont turn back on even when there is nothing in the audio out. I can see the red light is still on when I look in to the port. Intrestingly on my Windows side it works fine no problems so im thinking a software problem on lion is the cause as it only started happening after I updated. Any ideas or any fixs anyone knows ???
Hi L,
There is a switch inside the audio jack that may be stuck. Try gently inserting an audio plug, gently wiggling it, and then removing the audio plug. -
Do you have to pay to get your macbook pro headphone jack fixed?
it has windows 7 software by the way
Is it under warranty? If it is and the damage was not caused by misuse then no. Otherwise yes.

Having problems with my macbook's headphone jack. :(
I'm having problems with my Macbook's headphone jack. Every time I insert an earphone/s or headphones into the jack it works perfectly but when I remove the earphones my Macbook does not recognize that I've already removed the earphones in effect the speaker of the Macbook does not work. Anybody experiencing the same problem?
TIAHi extrarice23,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you remove the headphones from the jack, is there a red light that remains on (inside the jack) after the headphones are removed? It's very possible that the receptacles inside the jack are getting stuck and thinking that the headphones are still plugged into the computer.
You can try getting a can of compressed air, clearing out the port. -
Hi guys,
So I’m having a really odd issue with my 2009 MacBook Pro 15”. Specifically an issue with my headphone port and my normal 2.1 Logitech speaker system.
I am hearing a buzzing/static/humming (can’t decide) noise from my external speakers when the headphone jack is plugged in. Without performing any action on my Mac, the sound will start, last for about 20 seconds and stop.
I can also manually manipulate this interference issue by doing a few things, like playing audio from a website/media player; watching videos with a media player or opening any site and allowing a flash file to play (YouTube). These actions seem to manually start this strange sound.
Now for the fun part. Whilst the headphone jack is plugged in, removing my HDMI and Ethernet cables seem to stop the noise completely. Touching the outer port with the HDMI or Ethernet will make the sound return. And when I remove the headphone jack and hold the connector with one hand and touch my MacBook Pro with the other, the sound gets louder - more noise.
I have also tried headphones, I can still hear the buzz It’s just not as loud.
I’ve read that this could be a grounding issue. I’ve unplugged everything and changed MBP chargers. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is different HDMI and Ethernet cables.
Any ideas?Hey there d3adm8n,
This noise you hear when you have coming from the 3.5mm jack sounds to me like it could indeed have something to do with a grounding issue. I would look at the information in the following article about that, named:
Macintosh: Solutions for noise in the audio signal

Mac Book Pro Headphone jack isnt working?
Out of nowhere my headphone jack stopped working, i can only hear out of one ear. is there a way i can fix it or get it fixed for me?
How old is your MacBook Pro, and do you have Applecare? You might still be under warranty.
Otherwise, have you tested your headphones out on another device and tried a different headset on your Mac? Is the channel completely dead, or can you apply slight pressure to the plug to get the channels to work?
Maybe answers to these questions will give clues to others here to help. -
MacBook Pro Headphone Clicking
Hi!
I have a problem with my new MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012).
When I'am using headphones I hearing a click sound after 30 sec when no sound is playing. I can reproduce it by play a sound, stop it and wait 30 sec. I tested it with different headphones. Every time the same problem. The integrated speakers works fine. I hear the sound also when I mute the headphones. Maybe it sounds a little bit like when you switch a HiFi System on/off an hear a click in the speakers. My old MacBook (2006) does the same but it was very quiet. Now it's a loud sound.
Thanks for your help!
ch_boyeah , i have the problem too, macbook pro 15 early 2011, randon click sound from headphone jack when connect to external spekers , first , i tought it's my spekers , but i try another set and a headphone and all the same,!!!!
looks like a common hardware problem,!!!! -
MacBook Pro headphone port refuses to recognise headphones
Hi
Since doing a clean install of Mavericks (which solved a ReportCrash loop problem), everything has been fine except...
for some reason the 3.5mm headphone port refuses to acknowledge the existence of headphones when plugged in. The internal speakers do not cut out. No sound comes through the headphones.
If I go into Systems Preferences/Sound/Output there is no option for headphones sound, just internal speakers.
I have tried everything (deleting .plist files and rebooting, booting in safe mode, PRAM resets etc etc). I have also tried various sets of headphones (mono, stereo and three ring headphone plugs). They all don't work on my MacBook Pro, they all do work (and make the internal speakers cut out) on my MacBook Air. It's not the headphones.
The port will happily recognise, charge and download my iPod nano.
I am convinced this is an OS problem, as the port has not suffered any shocks, and it happened directly after a clean Mavericks install. It was working fine on Mavericks before the clean install.
I'd really rather not go through the pain of another clean install, especially if this is a known issue (though I can't find any reference to exactly the same problem).
Any thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks
NickDuh... sorry please ignore the note about it charging my ipod nano. That was the result of a very tired brain. Of course the nano is charged via USB. The rest of the post still stands, though. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks. N

Macbook pro headphone output jack faulty,
Only left headphone working, have tired using 5 different types of headphones to make sure it isn't the headphones. A buzzing sound come from the left headphone and the song is distorted on full volume with beats headphones. Is it that the output jack is broke?

Try resetting PRAM

Macbook air headphone jack problem
I have a macbook air. Speakers are working fine, but computer is not recognizing headphones. They do not show up on the sound output menu in settings when i plug them into the jack, and the main speakers continue to play sound as if there were no headphones. Help!
I have the same problem, but this trick seems to solve it: I open the preference for Sound. If you are connected to a screen it will say 'internal speakers' and 'display audio'. In my case, display audio was selected. I clicked on internal speakers, then back to display audio. i plugged in the earphoens. the internal speakers became 'headphones' after a couple of seconds and the speakers off, except for the earphones.

My MacBook Air headphone jack only left channel works
Builtin speakers are working fine on my MBA 2012, but when I plug any kind of headphone into the jack, only left channel works. If I tune output balance to right, then sound nothing.
I found there are only four metal contacts in the jack, two on each side, then one for ground, the other one for left channel, none for right channel, what about yours? At last, found it isn't a problem, actually any 3.5mm headphone of standard can work, just plug into the jack fully ( only one mm left ) . enjoy ~~
