MacBook Pro: I closed the lid, and 5 seconds later, I heard start-up chime!

I found a thread from earlier this year about this, but it was never solved and was then archived. But it happened to me earlier today. When I opened it back up, panicked, the computer was just off. I couldn't just hit the power button to start it back up... I had to hold it down for a good 7 seconds before the computer started up.
Here's the earlier thread...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=975359&tstart=0
Any ideas? It's only happened once, so I'm not TOO too concerned... but I am getting ready for Leopard and Time Machine so I can back up like a good little Apple user.

I had this issue and the culprit was a bluetooth mouse that was waking the computer up. Do you have any bluetooth devices or anything that might be signaling the computer?

  • Is there an easy way to securely delete everything on my macbook PRO except for the OS and applications?  Giving my old Macbook to a family member.

Is there an eay way to securely erase all information on my macbook Pro except for the OS and applicatios?  I'm donating my computer but want to eliiminate my files and info.

Yes, boot to your install disk (start up while holding C key).  Go to Utilities>Disk Utility.  Choose erase and format your disk (make sure it's formatted as Mac OSX extended journaled).  There's is a button for security options.  Choose the 0 option (don't choose the multiple pass versions, or it will take forever, but that's extra security).  The 0 option writes a 0 in every location on the drive, and it takes a few hours.  It would take CIA or highly skilled hacker abilities to dig out any information.
Once you wipe the disc, reinstall OSX.  You're done.

No, as I have yet to be convinced on Lion.
Did a permissions repair help from the install DVD?

  • Is the MacBook Pro good for The Sims3 and other versions of that game

Is the MacBook Pro good for The Sims3 and other versions of that game

i have an early 2011 15" MBP and it runs the Sims 3 just fine. I do not have any of the expansion packs for the game but as long as your MBP meets the minimum requirements you should be just fine

  • Closed the lid and now it won't turn on or wake up

I have a g3 duel usb ibook the white one. and it was up and running fine and then i closed the lid and when i came home the next day and opened it. it did not wake up and would not power on. i have had this issue before and have tried many things to fix it. last time i left it unpluged for like a week then i tried it one day and it just started up. any ideals on what the problem is?

OK It's exactly like the machine I'm on right now if it's a 14" one.
The reed switch is in the display about 1/3 the way up on the right side as you're looking at it. The actuator magnet is to the right of the keyboard on a line with the lower edge of the delete key. Verify it's position with a piece of magnetic (ferrous) metal. I'm using the lever arm of a nail clipper. Now on mine if I cover that magnet with a piece of tin the iBook won't go to sleep if I close the lid. I'm using the lid insert of a Ball Mason jar and placing it tangent to the edge of the keyboard on the line of the lower edge of the delete key.
Now if yours is like this and this solves your problem you can follow the instructions here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
and remove the top case and pull that magnet out. Otherwise you could replace the reed switch. Don't attempt the upper case removal if you're not confident around those tiny connectors and screws. I damaged a power connector doing this on a 12" 500.
    Good Luck.

  • Just bought my macbook pro, closed the lid and now it wants a password

closed the lid the first time after i set up the computer and now it wants a password

Did you type in a password when you set it up? If not just leave it blank.

  • MacBook Pro keyboard is totally unresponsive (except power button). Low battery was triggered last night, and work was conducted after power was connected. I closed the lid and went to sleep, and this morning I cannot log into my laptop.

The keyboard that is in the Mac is not functioning with the exception of the power button.
Since I am traveling, without a rental car, purchase of an external USB keyboard to troubleshoot and/or resolve the problem is not practical.
How do i wake up the keyboard?

  • I have my macbook pro for a while now and all of sudden it just started shutting down randomly when my battery had enough life in it and only works and comes back on when I put it on the charger. Do I need to replace my battery?

    I have a MacBook Pro
Keeps completely shutting down all the time when its fully charged and at random times when it is at 65% for example
Do I need to get a battery replacement? Or do I have a virus?
    PLEASE HELP

Sudden power-down is most often caused by overheating. The fans in a Mac are controlled by software that measures temperatures at several points inside the computer, and increases the fan speeds when temperatures are rising. You should get it checked to be sure the fans  are working as expected. Your appointment for an evaluation at the genius Bar at an Apple Store is free, in warranty or out.
Battery shortage will generally cause your MacBook to warn you, then go to sleep.
Your symptoms do not correspond with any know Viruses.

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

  • I just took my new MacBook Pro out of the box and the screen will not work. Display is, black no life to the screen at all

So I just ordered my first Mac book Pro. I took it out of the box and hit the power button to do the start up and the screen will not work at all. I shut the computer off and back on again. I plugged it in and unplugged it. I've done everything I can think of and the screen still stays blank with no life at all

Is the battery charged? Press the little button on the left edge, near the front. If no green dots, no charge.
Does it charge? When you connect the MagSafe charger, does the pilot light on the plug light up?
Does it actually start? Should sound a chime after you press the power button on the top/right corner. If it chimes, does the Caps Lock pilot light when you press it?
If it starts and Caps Lock does flash on and off, have you tried pressing the screen brightness control for awhile? F2 turns up the brightness, may be turned fully down.

  • I bought a macbook pro retina ME665 in Dubai, and 3 month later its display stopped working properly.some white lines appeared on it and display itself became white and black. Can anybody suggest what should I do to fix this problem?

In October 2013 I was on Vacationin Dubai and bought there Macbook pro retina ME665. I returned to Kyrgystan (home town) and for New Year I was away for a week. When I came back i found that the dispaly of my laptop became white and black, some lines appeared on it. Everybody in my family told me that no one has dropped my laptop or done anything that can cause this problem. there is no any service provider of apple in my country. • Mac Lifer using MacBook Pro - why is the performance and network SO slow now?

I'm a 15+ year experience designer that lives on my machine. I'm in Adobe, Safari, Mail, Skype and Gotomeeting every day. Skype audio is spotty, Safari lags, Mail lags, and Adobe Photoshop CS6 fonts seem to give it a ton of grief. I would take it in to a store, but don't have the physical time.

See ds store's excellent user tip - Why is my computer slow?
You don't say which model you have, how much RAM, how much free space on your internal hard drive, etc. Information like that can be useful.

  • My macbook pro fell off the coach and landed on its screen..nothings cracked or damaged..but is ut ok?

    Is it ok?

You can continue using it and it may or may not continue to work properly.  I suggest the you run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
You may need to use OPTION D to start it.
Better would be to have a genius bar technician check it out.
    Ciao.

  • When I turn on my MacBook pro I get the apple and the spinning thing will not boot up what can I do

Having trouble getting to boot up

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from its location.
