Macbook pro i5 2.4 + seagate momentus XT 500gb system freezes randomly

Hello all,
I have a problem with my Macbook pro i5 2.4GHz 4Gb Ram with upgraded hard drive Seagate Momentus XT 500Gb (with latest freeware update).
My issue began like 2 day of use of my new macbook pro (which dates a month ago). Since then, I re-installed my system like 5 times due to my problem.
When installing for the first time (clean install) the Mac OS X together with iLife, Office 2008 and Aperture, to my new HD there was no problems. The first time my OS freezed was after restoring my Aperture Library (some 16Gb)from an external HD to my new drive. The symptoms were that all my running applications stopped responding (safari, mail, aperture even finder) and dock dissappeared.
After hard reboot the system loads but the dock is missing, no application can be accessed.
I tried reparing permissions with Mac OS install disk without success.
New system install repares the problem. After that the issue appears randomly while using finder after external disk refused to eject or while copying some datas, or simply while using some other application like typing a document in MS word.
Thank you in advance for all your advices / solutions.

Seems that the new firmware update for Macbook pro 2010 version 1.9 resolved my problem.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor, MacBook Pro 5,4, and Seagate Momentus 5400.6

I recently upgraded the HDD in my MacBook Pro 5,4 to a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500 GB HDD. It is not one of the drives that has a sensor in it, so I was hoping to rely on Apple's on SMS technology to park the heads when necessary. I've found, though, that this isn't the case at all. Originally I would hear a "click" when picking up the MBP after sleeping it, but now I hear the drive still spinning after closing the lid, waiting a moment, and picking up the MBP. There is no indication to me that the drive stops upon "suddon motion", or at least it's not as sensitive as it was originally.
I used the Apple Terminal commands to check the state of the SMS and even to toggle it on and off, but I couldn't tell a difference. Is there anything else I need to do, or is it doing what it's supposed to do?
    I'm running a mid-09 MBP (5,4) with 10.6.8.

The SMS is not a part of the drive itself, it is a separate component normally located adjacent to the drive. It consists of a three-axis accelerometer that reports any motion of the computer to the Operating System. If it exceed a certain threshold, the O.S. causes the drive to park itself, presumably in anticipation to an impact. Some general purpose utilities, such as [MacPilot|http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php], allow you to enable or disable the SMS, there are also utilities specific for this.
An interesting application is [SeisMac|http://www.suitable.com/tools/seismac.html], which reads the info produced by the SMS and displays it as a graph, turning your Mac into a seismograph.
As for the operation of the system, I've found that if you close the lid on your portable and while it is updating the sleep image (before the LED starts pulsing), if you shake it, you will hear and feel the HDD coming to an emergency stop.

  • Macbook Pro will not boot beyond grey screen.  System freezes.

My Macbook Pro will not boot-up or get beyond the grey screen (with spinning gear wheel.)  I've tried all the recommended actions: resetting PRAM, disk repair, permissions repair, re-boot in safe mode etc but still the problem persists.  When viewing the safe-boot in verbose mode, the system seems to hang at the stage when it's checking the Airport & Ethernet - the last line on the page reads: "AppleBCOM5701Ethernet:   0    0    setFixedSpeed - logic error, speed any?"
Any ideas how to fix this without doing an Archive & Install?
I'm assuming that if I do an "Archive & Install" then I will lose all my Applications (VLC, Handbrake, MS Office for Mac etc.)  Will this actually be the case?  Will I lose them.
Any help gratefully received.  Many thanks.

Archive and Install just affects the System files, so any apps you have  should still be available afterwards.  The Installer on the disk that  came  with your Mac, when you bought it, will tell you this before you  proceed.  Of course, you can always back out of the Installer if you feel chicken.
Notwithstanding it is still necessary to backup everything.  You need to check that Time Machine is set to also backup your Applications folder.  It might be set not to do this.
It may not be necessary to worry about this if you have the original installer disc(s).  I think any stuff downloaded from iTunes etc can be re-downloaded.  However, it's probably quicker to get Time Machine to backup your apps if you can afford the HDD space.  It's bound to be quicker than re-downloading the stuff plus any updates.  And of course there's those Apps that you have but forgotten about.  What about them?

Macbook Pro: How do I set up a RAID system on a MACBOOK PRO properly?
Can I have the OS on the same drives or does it need to be seperate?
I mostly want to do this becuase I am having a lot of problems with the "spinning ball of death" and slow speeds.  I have my RAM maxed out at 6Gigs and my 7200rpm 750GB HD is about half full.
Am I correct in trying to do an external RAID Drive to help with speed?
If yes, what is the best way to do this and which type of connection (USB, Firewire, etc) is best to use?
    Thanks!

When I unplug Apple headphones from my MacBook Pro sond from internal speakers not work, and system soud preferences displayed: Output: optical digital out port only

If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.
    Ciao.

I am having Macbook Pro, I have recently tried updating my operating system to OS Yosemite, but after that its giving problem in connecting to Wifi. The error is "Connection Time out Occurred". Its getting connected by Ethernet cable.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • Best firewire cable for 2010 macbook pro 13 to new Seagate drive?

Hi. Have an old 2010 macbook pro 13" running OS 10.6.8. Have a friewire 800 port. Need to hook up to a 4 TB Seagate back up plus drive (http://www.seagate.com/in/en/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plu s-desk/) While the specs on the drive clearly indicate that it is firewire 800 compatible, I'm not sure which cable to get. I'm told there are different pins, so what exactly do i need to ask for, to make my ageing 2010 macbook talk to my new(ish) seagate back up drive via firewire? Also, if anyone out there knows where I can source such a cable in India, I'd appreciate the advice. Thanks.

As far as I know, there are 2 types of charging methods.
    1) Leave the charger attached to the MacBook Pro as frequently as possible. Basically the laptop is attached to the charger 24/7.
Leaving it attached 24/7 is not good - lithium-based batteries like the one in your MBP need to be used to maintain their health.
    2) When the battery reached 100%, unplug the charger and use it with the battery only. And when it reaches a certain level indicated to connect the charger, then charge it.
This is what I have. Currently, I am doing option 2 since that is how I think batteries work.
#2 is also not good. You are thinking of the older nickel-based batteries, for which #2 was best.
The 'best' option is somewhere in the middle - use your battery frequently but lightly, an hour or two on battery a day, for a total of 1-2 cycles per week.

  • HT202731 Yosemite on new MacBook Pro is not recognising Seagate or Lacie external hard drives

My Lacie external drive and Seagate external drive are not being recognised by my new MacBook Pro 13" retina with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.  Initially the Lacie worked, but that has dropped out - cannot find it in disk utilites.
Lacie is recognised by my friends computer with Maverick - OS X 10.9.5.  Currently downloading data and will try to reconfigure the external drive.  Is Yosemite truly not acknowledging other drivers?  USB memory key is fine.  Lacie has been my back up for some years, also Seagate, but on older computers. Suggestions needed to resolve this please.

Contact the manufacturers of Lacie and Seagate.  You need to determine if the models that you have are compatible w/your new OS system and/or comp.

  • 500gb Seagate Momentus installed, constant beachball/freezing!

i recently installed a 500gb seagate momentus 5400 rpm hd into my macbook aluminum. i installed OSX and the installs went smoothly. for some reason my macbook will constantly freeze now for no reason at all. i would randomly get the spinning beachball and programs will begin to crash one by one. i usually always have firefox and adium open so i'm not sure if its one of these programs causing it, or possibly a bad OS install.
is it possible it's my hard drive? once the beachball freezes all the programs, i can still slide the trackpad and see all programs opened i just can't do anything in any of them.
i've already repaired disk and disk permissions with install dvd. i've also tracked it with activity monitor and there is nothing abnormal. can anyone help with this? thanks.

I did return it. I decided it would take as much time to reinstall everything, since I had already wiped the hard drive to return to the store, and I was sooooo tired of troubleshooting after a month of problems. (I was also on my last day of their 30 day return policy.)
I swapped it out for a WD hard drive of the same size, reloaded everything yesterday, and have had no problems at all. Hope disabling the SMS continues to work for you!
@Mrfantastic, when I was researching this I saw a lot of people commenting on the 7200 having issues with it beeping and freezing--although it sounds like the freeze issue the 7200 has is different. Mine would FREEZE. Couldn't force quit, and it would freeze up all the other applications. My only option was to a hard reboot. This would happen 1-2 times an hour. The people with complaints about the 7200 are saying it beeps and then freezes for 10-30 seconds and then starts working again...

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro and it came with the old operating system, how do I upgrade it to the latest one without having to purchase it?

    Hi,
Im a new Mac user. I currently just bought a new MacBook Pro. The first computer I got apparently had a problem with the flex, so I had to go change it for a new one. The first one had the latest operating system, the second one the store gave me didn't, yet it's still a brand new computer, so I don't see why I should have to pay for the new operating system, which should already come with my brand new computer. So I am trying to contact apple so they may give me permission to download it from the app store for free, due to this inconvenience and first bad experience. The vendor tells me that sometimes new computers may come with old operating systems because they're from an old batch of new computers. Oh and by the way, I'm from Honduras, and bought it at Jetstereo, in Tegucigalpa (the capital). This store is a licensed distributor.
    Hope someone can help me,
    Ankie Zapata

Go to the Mac App Store main page and click on Support under Quick Links.

  • I have Mavericks on my MacBook Pro and need to create an iDVD but it freezes when I try to open it. Also same with iMovie (8.0.6)??

Can't open either my version of iDVD (and seems Apple no longer has iDVD??) or iMovie (8.0.6) with my MacBook Pro with Mavericks? Is it not possible to create DVDs anymore with Mavericks, which is what I want to do?  Creating DVDs with iDVD was what I do most??  Any help with these issues?
    Thanks
    Hal

Allen, Thanks for answering. When I try this, I get nowhere:
In the Finder, click the Go menu and choose Home.
Open the Library folder and then the Preferences folder.
Remove the "com.apple.x.plist" file, where "x" should be replaced with the iLife application you are troubleshooting (for example, "com.apple.iphoto.plist" or "com.apple.imovie8.plist").
Remove receipts and reinstall iLife applications
I cant find either the Library or Preferences folders. Are they invisible and somewhere else?
I search with Spot Light for them,  I also do not find them....
    Advice?
    Thanks,
    Hal

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • I currently have a one year old MacBook Pro, and right when I boot up the system, the kernel_task is using about 1GB of the 4GB of RAM that I have. Is this normal? Or if not, how can I reduce the kernel_task?

I have noticed that my computer is running super slow, even when I only have one application (like Chrome) running for a short amount of time.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
