MacBook Pro i5 2.5 GHz/8GB RAM With Retina
Hi eveyone,
As many of you already did, today I've upgraded my MacBook Pro i5 2.5 GHz/8GB RAM from Mountain Lion (10.8.5) to Mavericks (10.9).
Unfortunately, I'm experiencing serious and unpleasant issues since I installed the upgrade.
Specifically, my monitor flickers almost every time I scroll an application window (e.g., Safari, Chrom or internet, either using an USB mouse or the trackpad.
Moreover, when I pass the mouse over the Dock, this starts vibrating from time to time.
After several reboots and given that one of the new features of Mavericks is the new management of external monitors, I've tried to re-install from scratch the OS X upgradewithout connecting my laptop to the external LCD but still nothing has changed.
I'm really annoyed by having both monitors flickering. Another particular thing is that if I try to click on the Finder menu appearing on the external monitor, this makes flicker the primary monitor approximately at the same coordinates (i.e., at the Finder menu of the laptop monitor).
It seems like something is going wrong with the video card drivers but this is just my conjecture.
Are you guys experiencing the same or is there anything you might want to suggest to solve these issues?
Thank you in advance
ANY HELP THERE ,IT IS REALLY DISAPONTEING THAT THIS IS HAPPENING WITH APPLE PRODUCTS HELP PLEASE
THANKS

I have upgraded my MacBook Pro 15 late 2011 to 8Gb RAM, now when I go to about this mac in it more info it doesn't show AMD graphics card as it used to before, it just show Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB is that a problem that I need to worry about?
and in system report >> hardware >> Graphics/Display >> it shows both grafics card listed. Some Mac's when the RAM is increased the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics will bump itself up to the higher video RAM it takes, this seems to be what occured.
It also means the dedicated graphics card will be used less, but only so slightly less.
You obviously still should have both, you can test this by turning off Graphics Switching in Energy Saver, that will use the decicated AMD card all the time.
You can also run Cinebench and compare the scores here

In the last month I have had my Macbook Pro freeze up on me twice then throw me out of my profile and back to the logon screen. When logging back in all my data/ programs that I was previously using have been closed. This has happened when I have been multi tasking, as well as running a VM. Obviously I dont know when it is going to happen so I have not checked the resources to see how much RAM is being utilised at that point in time. What I would like to know if that behaviour typical of a Mac when it is running low on resources, bearing in mind I am using 8MB RAM?
Thanks,

I have heard a lot of guys complain about the screen ghosting
And buring on and lg or Samsung how can I tell
By the way this MacBook Pro manufacturer February 2013
Does it have the same problem with the screen or not
ThanksKind of depends on your budget. The Macbook Air can be configured to match a lower end Macbook Pro in RAM and HD. Up to 8GB Ram and 512GB HD but will be a little more expensive.
If you need the extra storage and RAM, 1TB storage and 16GB RAM is the top of the line for the Mac Book Pro, then you should go for the Macbook Pro.
If 8GB RAM and 512GB HD is o.k for you, then you'll benefit from the Air's portability as its lighter and smaller.
All in all, I would if portability is really important, go for the Air, and just increase its RAM to 8GB. A small portable external Hard drive will compensate for the lack of internal storage. -
What is the best audio production hard drive for macbook pro 13" 2.53 ghz?
I'm new to mac, this has been a big transition.
I've been looking on newegg and there are tons of choices.
Looking for a good hard drive for music production in live 8, 7200 rpm has been recommended. Should it be internal or external?
I'm making minimalist oldschool synthpop so I don't need too many plugins or tracks at once but I am gigging so I want gear that's simple, I love everything about the apogee duet in this respect.
I have macbook pro 13" 2.53 ghz 4GB ram
Apogee Duet
Ableton live 8 standardFor internal, you can't go wrong with the Hitachi Travelstar. They work very well with the MacBook Pro and right now you can get 300 GB of 7200 RPM for less than 75 dollars at Newegg. You could try that and see if you really need an external given the type of music you're working with.
If you decide to get an external, I would steer away from all-purpose drives and get one designed for audio, like the Glyph drives. Along the Apogee Duet simplicity lines, they're designed for music production and they just work. Most of them come with carrying cases. Just plug the Glyph into your MacBook Pro, plug the Duet into the Glyph, and that's it. -

HI All
This is my first post here. As mentioned I have a fall 2011 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM and i was thinking of buying a 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade? I do light video editing and day to day tasks like word processing, email etc.
How would the performance of the Macbook Air with the Core i5 with 4 gb Ram be compared to the old Macbook Pro 15 with Core i7 Quad 2.0 ghz with 8 GB Ram.
Thanks
SunnyThe main advantage would be a solid state drive. This will improve performance and speed moreso than RAM considerations. The disadvantage will be a loss of storage space. Moreover, one of the disadvantages of a SSD is that the more storage space used on it, the slower it becomes and the quicker it will deteroriate.
If you do video editing, I would take the GPU into consideration. Does your 15'' come with a discrete GPU? The integrated GPU on the MBA (intel HD 5000) is better than the 2011 MBP integrated GPU (3000), but it includes no discrete GPU.
Depending on how much storage space you use on your HDD currently + how many graphics intensive programs you run, you may want to consider upgrading your current machine with a SSD, upgrading your RAM on current machine to 16 gb (~160$ through macmemory or newegg), or purchasing a new Macbook Pro rather than Macbook Air.
Last thing I would add:
You will never be able to upgrade MBA RAM. It is soldered to the logicboard on the new models, non-retina included. You may wan to opt with the 8 GB RAM configuration. -
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 15" Snow Leopard Quadcore icore 7 with 8Gb of RAM and Im a Webpage Graphic Designer but why is my Macbookpro is so slow!?
I'm opening like Skype, AIM, Chrome the Memory Hog, Adobe Photshop and Illustrator... Its so slow! I tried Onyx, CleanMyMac, iFreeMemory or just purging but still i still have to restart to get it back to normal after closing all the applications... im not really impressed with the memory swapping thing,Even though my inactive RAM is like 2GB its so SloW! Anyone knows how to fix this problem? It's hard to say why your machine is slow, but that machine with 8 GB of RAM should not be slow. Could be any number of possible problems. Try taking a look at the Mac OS X Speed FAQ.

I own a MacBook Pro 13 inch [dec 2009] 4gb ram. I'm upgrading it to 8gb. Can I increase the speed of the ram from 1066 to 1333 Mhz..?
Which is the best company and is it necessary to buy it from the Apple store.Let's clear the air here between fact and fiction.
Brand of RAM has little if anything to do with its quality.
A reliable vendor is more important that brand of RAM.
Installing faster rated RAM than required for your computer doesn't result in a faster computer. The RAM still runs at the speed of the system's memory bus.
Installing slower rated RAM than required for your computer will make the computer run slower.
Using faster rated RAM is a tricky business. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not work. This may be due to other factors related to your computer's memory bus speed and clock speed as well as other characteristics of the RAM such as CAS Latency (CL.)
The reliable thing to do is use RAM that meets the specifications set for your computer. That information is found in either the user manual or the system specs. -
MacBook Pro i5 2.4 Ghz versus MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 3.06 Ghz???
Re: MacBook Pro i5 2.4 Ghz vs. MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 3.06 Ghz
Hello,
I am new to CS5 / Photoshop (& Apple!) and am looking forward to diving in. However I am about to purchase either a used MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 3.06 Ghz or the MacBook Pro i5 2.4 Ghz. Can anyone provide me with information as performance differences I may see between the 2 processors using CS5 for photo/video editing? I appreciate any insight!
The MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 3.06 Ghz has been upgraded to 8GB of RAM, has the no glare screen, and a 750GB Hardrive. The new i5 I would buy is the lower end model. Less RAM and smaller HD, however they are obviously upgradeable in the future. It also would not have the no glare screen.
My biggest question is around performance of the the CPUs on Photoshop, etc ...??? That being said, there is a $300 difference and is the new machine worth it in performance???
Appreciate your help!georgecoll wrote:

If you're going to do serious Photoshopping, then more ram is better. But, without knowing the price differences, I'll be honest, go for the i5 version, it'll work better for you. It'll cost you about $120 to upgrade the RAM to 8GB (go to any reputable online dealer or Amazon). It'll cost you about $110 to upgrade to 1TB internal HDD. Both upgrade are user friendly and do not harm the warranty of the new MBP.
So, for $230 in upgrades, you'll have similar specs as the used one, but a much faster performing processor. Unless the Core 2 Duo is MUCH cheaper, I'd buy new, then immediately upgrade. I have the i7 processor, I did the upgrades, and whenever I turn on the Core 2 Duo, it feels like I'm using an abacus. OK, not that bad, but the difference on video encoding and photoshop/Aperture is huge. -
Macbook pro 5.1 (late 2008?) RAM update - how much?
Hi there,
I'm very confused. Starting to feel the limit of 4gb on my MacBook pro, and interested in updating the RAM, but very confused about how much I can install, and the spec I need.
I am in the process of installing OSX Lion (so not sure if this updates any of the limitations I've read that older MacBook's have memory wise).
Here is my current spec:
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.33f8
I'd sincerly appreciate input from a knowledgeable source! How much RAM can I/should I install, and how perhaps more details on the type of RAM and where to get it from *UK.
Many thanks!
Deep.Hi Frosty698,
Looks like I'm a bit late to this party!
In answer to your questions:
Did you upgrade to the 8GB's (2x4) ?
- I did yes, bought the memory from Crucial (UK). I struggled to find the compatible module in the UK site using the memory tool they have, found it on the US site, then simply found the comparable module in the UK
How do you find it runs -
- It runs better than before. Truth be told 8gb is overkill. I generally have 4-5gb free. But it was reaching it's limit at the original 4gb install. And upgrading to 8gb was fairly cheap (around £40). I find now the CPU is generally the problem now. Am looking forward to the new macbooks (coming soon) as Lion appears to run a little slowly for me.
I spend time browsing the Internet on my machine and found uninstalling flash led to a marked improvement in speed and reduced the tendency of sites to hang. Chrome in particular improved greatly, and oddly I can view flash sites in chrome anyway. I also run flashblock now - so click to play on most sites.
or did you do something else ?
No that's about it.
Follow the instructions carefully when installing the RAM, it's pretty easy, careful inserting it, you'll know when it goes in. And keep the screws in a bowl or something, those suckers are tiny and when they disappear on you are difficult to find.
All the best! -

Problem:
Over the last few months I've had constant problems with freezing, shut downs. This might be in the form of I'll be working in iMovie editing some video and then mouse down into the corner to switch Spaces, the screen will half zoom out then just hang. Mouse won't respond, everything just sits there. I usually have to fix this by holding down the power button until the MBP turns off, then just reboot.
Other times I'll leave the computer on at night, wake up in the morning and it will either be off and as such, I just have to press the power button and it boots up again. Or the screen will be off, metal above the Function keys will be cooking, but the computer isn't responding, just a blank screen. I hold down the power button until it turns off and then reboot again.
These problems were getting worse. It has gotten to the stage where it might freeze a couple of times a day.
Seems the problem only occurs when the MBP is working. I might leave it rendering at night and wake in the morning to find it off etc.
Will also sometimes get horizontial lines in apps. I shut them down and start them up again and it's fine. But it's like the graphics card is struggling big time.
Actions to Fix:
- Started with repairing the permissions, but I always found that it had lots of items to repair, would repair then, but then if I verified again, the same things would come up as needing to be repaired. I also tried booting from the OS X DVD and repairing from that version of Disk Utility, but same result.
- Created new admin user account, to see if problem was just limited to my account. Same problem.
- Ran AHT from the MBP DVD that came with the MBP and it passed the hardware test. Though I couldn't find anywhere to make it run an extended test. The test I could run would only take about 10 minutes I believe.
- Erased the HD and fresh install of 10.6.3 from DVD, then software updates to 10.6.7 (yesterday). Repaired permissions after each step. After the OS upgrade I got a decent list of items that needed to be repaired, and after repair, would still show as needing repair. I checked the KB and it listed a lot of files that might get this error, but that it was ok to ignore them.
- Was editing video this morning in iMovie again, running Disk Utility on an external drive and boom, the MBP locked up again
I've gone through the /logs/crashlog in both the root and home user folders. After nearly all crashes these are empty, so it's not even reporting it anywhere.
Can anyone shed any light on whhat might be causing the problem?
<Serial Number Edited by Host>Actually, when I was at the Apple Store I had both laptops flat, with the screens at 90 degrees. Pushing the screen forward and back with my fingers (via the top of the screen of course), the 15" easily has twice the hinge resistance. With that kind of test, weight isn't a significant factor -- that 17" hinge on a 15" laptop would probably cause the screen to come crashing down, too.
There were a few people in these forums who said their 17" was actually too tight (wish I had that problem!). It seems like a quality/consistency problem that could easily be fixed by A) measuring the force required to move the screen back and forth before screwing the case together, and B) making the hinge tension adjustable.
