  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 16gb RAM error

    Hi,
    I've got a 13" Macbook Pro Late 2011, Intel i5 2.4ghz, 16gb RAM Corsair (mac branded), 500gb 7200rpm Seagate Momentus.
Recently my mac keeps restarting 3-4 times a day. I've done the Apple Hardware Test and I found out a problem with my memory (4MEM/9/40000000).
So I've tested each stick and the funny thing is that they both works well (without reporting errors) alone. When i put the second stick (no matter if the first or the second one), AHT shows up the error.
So, each stick alone -> OK
Two of them together -> BAD
I've tested also the two sticks that originally came with my mac (2x2gb) and everything went fine.
    What do you think people?
    Thanks!

    Me too!
Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13 "Inch
    2 Ram upgrade + 120 16GB SSD and a regular reboot.
I checked with the RAM it works fine.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, 16GB RAM and Apple Premium Service Center

    Hello all,
My dad has a MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, it came with a 4GB RAM. When he got Parallels and installed Windows 8, 4GB RAM were not enough to even deal with Safari so he had to buy 16GB RAM from Cruical. Today when he went to Apple Premium Service Center here in Qatar (51 East) they refused to install the x2 8GB RAM and only installed one of them. They kept warning my dad that installing the whole 16GB can cause issues with the MacBook Pro HDD and can make it go faulty. I wanted to ask if installing RAMs can pose the HDD life to any danger. Because my dad uses his Mac for work and wouldn't like to lose any of his files against small additional speed.
    Thanks.

its very easy to do, here are step by step instructions with photos

  • Can I buy a Macbook pro retina 13" with 16gb RAM and i7 processor in an physical Apple Store in Spain?

I´m looking a Macbook pro 13 inch, but I would buy it with an i7 processor and 16Gb ram. Can I buy it in a spanish physical Apple Store or only in the Apple Store online?
    Thanks

At least in Spain, some Apple Retail Stores have got specific build-to-order MacBooks Pro available, but they are just because they are sold better than any other build-to-order MacBook Pro.
However, as Kappy said, it's quite difficult you can get one with the configuration you want. Have a look at the list of Apple Retail Stores in Spain, choose one and call them to see if there's one available > http://www.apple.com/es/retail/storelist The best way to buy a build-to-order Mac is through Apple Online Store

  • Macbook Pro 2012 overheats with 16GB RAM. Is this normal?

    Hi guys,
I installed 16GB RAM on MBP 2012 13" running I5 for peace of mind, as I think I might need all of it when using say autocad and other 3d visualization programs in bootcamp. Also I am an architect/designer who likes having a tone of stuff open at the same time between browser and emails and music and work. That's just the way I am.
But there is one thing I truly dislike and that's a hot laptop on your lap when in bed, say. It also just makes the whole karma horrible I reckon.
Anyway, after trying 8GB thanks to a mix up at the store where they gave me two 4GB sticks instead of the 28GB I had ordered I noticed the same improvements for basic use I have now with the full 16GB package. But now I feel that the laptop is overheating using Mavericks which wasn't happenng before. The system shows the full 16GB in operation so I don't think there is a malfunction there. But I want to ask of this behaviour is considered normal or i on the other hand I should be going to the shop where I got this from to complain?
This is the RAM I bought:
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=&LinkBack=&k tcpartno=KTA-MB1600/8G&id=2
    **** it's hot!!
    Thanks,
    MF

The amount of RAM will not be responsible for heat, the application(s) and the amount of resources it(they) require(s) from the CPU/GPU will create the heat.  This is the 'official' Apple policy on how a MBP should be used:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/care/
    Note this particular paragraph:
    If you install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
and open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and CPU to display values from high to low and post images of both when the MBP gets hot, we may be able to determine if it is normal or not.
    Ciao.

  • Which MacBook Pro Models can handle 16GB RAM

Hey, I'm looking to get a refurbished MBP and I'm wondering which models (that came with i series processors) can support 16GB of memory. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

    jadasneez,
any non-Retina model from 2011 or 2012 (they all have Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs) can support 16 GB of RAM, as well as any Retina model that came from the factory with 16 GB of RAM soldered on.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you ad

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button.  Worked fine before Lion update.   Any Advice?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out.  Thanks very much for responding!!!

  • I m havind 15inch 2011 late macbook pro lap i7 processor 8gb ram 1tb hdd can i use avid media composer and final cut pro in this specifications?

i m havind 15inch 2011 late macbook pro lap i7 processor 8gb ram 1tb hdd can i use avid media composer and final cut pro in this specifications?

Can't speak about avid, since I am not familiar with the software.
You can certainly use FCP X on that machine. It should work better if you use a fast external drive for your media and projects.
There is a free trial, so try it out and see how it goes. You should also follow some good video tutorials, if you are not familiar with the application. FCP X is a lot different from Avid, Premiere or even Final Cut Pro 7.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after ram upgrade...

Hey everybody! Hope everyone is having a great Christmas! I got a 16gb ram upgrade for my 2012 MacBook Pro 15 today and I am having some trouble with the upgrade. Its an odd problem. I installed the two 8gb sticks no problem, but when I try and boot into OS X the machine shows the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath, and then it just shuts itself off. I don't know what the problem is. The machine boots fine into my Windows 7 partition, and registers both sticks of ram. OS X restore also boots no problem and lets me reinstall OS X, which is what I am doing currently. IDK if this is just because of a hardare change or what. The ram I installed is Adata pc3 12800 1600mhz ram, so it should be supported.

Replace the Ram, buy from OWC or Crucial, buy the Ram Apple recommend, don't rely on "it should work"

  • MacBook Pro mid 2012 15" - one RAM slot gone bad

    Hi,
Has anyone ever had the issue with not working RAM slot? My MacBook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina) suddenly froze and after restart was beeping three times every few seconds. I found out that the beeping signals bad RAM. Bought new chips, and the problem still exists. My mac can now run on one slot with 4GB RAM.
I did check the placement of the chips in the slots, i also checked one slot at a time, and one of them has gone broken.
Any ideas on how to make it run again? or if it is possible to replace the slots?
    Brgds

    MacBook Pro 2,7GHz Intel Core i7 / OSX 10.9.4

The Apple-accepted cure for a dead RAM slot is a new logic board. Unless you ahve AppleCare, that will be an expensive fix.
An Apple service option is the "depot repair." Instead of working on your computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a centralized refurbishment facility where they fix anything they find wrong (except for cosmetic damage and damage from abuse like dropping) for a flat fee of a little over US$300. That is between 30 and 40 percent of the parts and labor charges if Apple installs a new board in an Apple Store. Sometimes they will install an new battery at the depot without increasing the flat fee.
The downside is that it takes about a week; for that level of cost savings, I could do without my computer for a week.
So take it to Apple and ask about a depot repair.
A low-tech and low-cost option is to expand on what you are doing now--using one slot. Although the official RAM limit on your model is 8GB RAM (two 4GB models), your model can actually handle a total of 16GB (two 8GB modules. You can ignore the dead slot and put an 8GB module in the good slot. My 2012 MBP has 8GB RAM and is completely happy running Mavericks.
Be sure to ONLY get the RAM from an Mac-savvy vendor. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM from one supplier. This is their page for an 8GB module for your MBP model:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/1600DDR3S8GB/
I would also trust Crucial on this one. For a change they recognize that your model can use more RAM than stated in Apple's outdated specs:

  • 10.6, quicktime, and itunes on a macbook pro 2.53 w/ 4gb ram and ssd

    Hi,
I am experiencing something extremely weird, and extremely frustrating...
What I am experiencing is that after I've been using my system for a while, I will launch quicktime, and I will get the spinning ball forever.. If I launch iTunes it will just bounce on my dock forever and not launch.
Then I have to reboot, which is sometimes impossible to do, so I will have to manually tell my system to shutdown via the terminal.
When my mac reboots, everything is fine.. Quicktime launches, iTunes launches, happy world...
... So I thought it was perhaps something that I was doing (applications that I was running, websites I was visiting etc.), but now I have evidence that it's not. Which is even more confusing. Last night, a friend wanted me to pull up something on quicktime-- I got the spinning ball.. Said "ugh, I don't understand what is up with my system". Clicked restart.. It wouldn't restart.. lauched terminal.. sudo shutdown -h now... Ok.. it's off.. turn it on.. Launch quicktime.. hooray.. there's the video..
Ok-- That was the extent of me using my computer. I left it on after that for many hours.. and eventually closed the laptop.
In the morning, opened it up.. Clicked quicktime, and.. SPINNING BALL. Had to reboot.
so, the only thing I can think is that something is occurring inactivity, or sleep, something that is causing QT and iTunes to mess up... I tried doing various tests, but could not come up with anything. I tried just running my screensaver for a while, but quicktime still comes up no problem.
Very frustrating.. I want to know if anyone else is experiencing this, and if there are any suggestions for what I should do. I have zapped p-ram, I have repaired permissions...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. That's a risk, and more in a MacBook Pro, that has got everything soldered except the hard drive and memory.
    2. If you want performance, buy a SSD. It will get the best performance but they are expensive, so you should consider the option to buy a SSD with a small capacity to store OS X and applications and an external disk for other data.
    3. SSDs are much better than hard disk drives because they haven't got mechanical parts. You will notice this difference in read and write tasks like a startup, that will be much faster. However, in other tasks, it doesn't mind if you have a HDD or a SSD, because performance depends on the processor and graphic card. Also, you will notice a difference with a 7200 rpm hard disk.
    4. You can take it to an Apple Store or reseller to see what they can do in order to repair your computer
