who has and how izz it working, do you think you need firewire 800? or do you reckon eSATA will be the replacement ?
they say to put Final Cut Pro on the external hard drive and the video on another, what's the story there?
will 128 video card be okay or I have to get the 256 ( i think I know the answer)

You are right, there are no FW800 video cameras, at least that I've ever heard of. And, since the MacBook Pro doesn't sport the FW800 port, you'll have to stick with either a FW400 drive or go with a ExpressCard/34 card such as the Vydeo SATA II card if you are looking for the ultimate drive performance.

I would agree with Daniel about the fastest and biggest hard drive you can afford, but I really don't think the 256MB graphics card is at all necessary. There is nothing you are going to use in iMovie HD that necessitates the bigger (faster) graphics card. My PBG4 15" with the 64MB graphics card will handle anything I do in iMovie, no stutter or problems displaying video. Maybe if you are looking to run video intensive apps such as games or live video output like Modul8, you could use the higher memory graphics card, but iMovie just doesn't need it.

The easiest way would be to just attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. iMovie should see it next time you open iMovie.
If you are going for portability, you can attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. Then open iMovie.
Then click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. You should see your external drive listed in the Project Library and the Event Library.
To make a COPY just drag the icon for your project to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library List.
To MOVE it, hold down the command key while you drag.
If you want to edit the project, you will also want any Events, Photos, or Music referenced in the Project. To get those, click on the Project to select it (it is now on the MacBook Pro) and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA.

Transferring Hi8 onto my MacBook Pro, iMovie HD

so heres the problem. i've got a samsung Hi8 that's having alot of problems whenever i try to play any video back on/through it. id take it to get fixed but i dont really wanna put any money in it, rather just by a new DV camcorder. however i have Hi8 video that i really do want to save and edit and such. so if theres a way i can get it to run long enough to transfer the contents onto my macbook, what kind of firewires/device/etc would i need to do that?
im not toooo mac or video savvy so please break it down into simpleton terms for me. anyone that can do so would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

You'll need audio/video cables to connect the HI8 to the DV cam (use a S-video cable if possible). Then you'll need a firewire cable having 4 pin on one end that connects to the DV cam and 6 pin on the other end that connects to the computer.
Well you gotta have a playback device so if you're gonna do it yourself and you present cam won't cooperate;
1.) Borrow a friends HI8, This would be the cheapest way(they're probably not using it anyway these days).
2.) Get it repaired or buy a new HI8 camera. As cheap as HI8 cams are now it may be cheaper to get a new one.
3.) You can always find a "Service" that will do the transfer $$$$$$$$$.

Quality issues: Sony CX-7 HD Camera, MacBook Pro, iMovie 08

Hey, everyone. I'm having some difficulties where final quality of movies is concerned. I'm an amateur, so the problem is probably between the chair and the keyboard, but I figured I'd check in and see what anyone here had to say.
I've imported HD footage from my CX-7 at 1920x1080. For the purposes of trying to figure this out, I'm just using a short 30 second selection from the longer clip I imported from the camera.
With that 30 seconds added to my iMovie project, I can preview it in the iMovie preview pane and it looks STELLAR. I mean super clear...awesome. Then I export it to .mov, .mp4...any other format and the quality goes to absolute sh*t. It's interlaced, pixelated, choppy. It looks the way a 640x480 video looks when maximized to 1600x1200.
So, the footage quality is great going in, garbage coming out. Anyone have any ideas?

I recently purchased a macbook pro and i am trying to put some camcorder footage from my sony vx 2000 onto iMovies. for some reason i cannot import or capture any footage from my camera and tapes onto the imovies. i have the 9 to 4 inch pin firewall cable

The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries only). And generally, the camera should be set to Play mode, not recording mode.

Macbook Pro Retina keeps restarting "due to a problem" as well as imovie and Skype

My new Macbook Pro Retina keeps restarting "due to a problem", when I open my skype it crashes and my imovie crashes all the time as well. I just got this computer last week. If someone could please help me out.

DVD drives read the bottom of the disk, not the top. Smooth out the paper & try again.

Since Apple has stopped supporting and offering iDVD you'll need to purchase the iLIfe 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11 which will include iDVD 7.

I have Mavericks on my MacBook Pro and need to create an iDVD but it freezes when I try to open it. Also same with iMovie (8.0.6)??

Can't open either my version of iDVD (and seems Apple no longer has iDVD??) or iMovie (8.0.6) with my MacBook Pro with Mavericks? Is it not possible to create DVDs anymore with Mavericks, which is what I want to do? Creating DVDs with iDVD was what I do most?? Any help with these issues?

Allen, Thanks for answering. When I try this, I get nowhere:
In the Finder, click the Go menu and choose Home.
Open the Library folder and then the Preferences folder.
Remove the "com.apple.x.plist" file, where "x" should be replaced with the iLife application you are troubleshooting (for example, "com.apple.iphoto.plist" or "com.apple.imovie8.plist").
Remove receipts and reinstall iLife applications
I cant find either the Library or Preferences folders. Are they invisible and somewhere else?
I search with Spot Light for them, I also do not find them....

Ive even tried opening in itunes and copying from thier but they wont open in Itunes, no message or anything they simple just dont open. its strange because it does open in quicktime player.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

Drag your clip or clips into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the clips in Apple Intermediate Codec.
Sometimes, MPEG2 clips also require that you install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this. This is available from Apple for $20.

I've been using "Burn" for years and it has been the only DVD burning software I have ever used for the mac. I have never needed to look at other apps. Unless you want something that has more bells and whistles such as Roxio's "Toast" : http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html
There are thousands of quality free apps out there for the mac that are not part of the App Store. All you have to do is read reviews online, do a little search, the Apple forums are full of recommendations from experienced users that have been here for years...
