MacBook Pro - Intel - No Sound/Audio

I have no sound/audio!
The things I have done are:
Checked the audio setup in System Preferences - All is ok, internal speakers on etc..
Updated all software and restarted.
Reset PRAM and SMC.
Things that I think may be related to the problem:
My battery has the "Service Battery" symbol.
Sound stopped working on an international flight (could this possibly affect anything in a MBP?)
So I'm a little stumped as what to do, I can't go under warranty as it's over 2 years old. I need to find a solution without spending money at Apple.
Any suggestions more than welcomed.
Thanks,
Jim

My next suggestion is what Shootist007 recommends, take it to the Apple store as it sounds as if it could be a hardware problem. Apple will diagnose it for free, then give you an estimate for repair. They usually work of a flat rate and will repair anything they find wrong. I had a MBP repaired for this rate rate and they replaced the logic board, hard drive, led backlight, keyboard, for the flat rate. (I just thought the HD had died) They found stuff I was not even aware of, so it is basically a new machine for about 1/3 the cost of replacement. (It was my kids and I didn't have the $$$$ to replace it.  Well worth checking out.  All the best

  • MacBook Pro Boot Camp Sound Audio Drivers Do Not Work with Miscrosoft Vista

I installed Vista via Boot Camp on my new 15" i7 MacBook Pro. After full MS Vista patching and Apple Boot Camp driver installation, the sound/audio does not work.
After some searching on the net, I've noticed that this is perhaps a widespread problem. Are there any solutions or an indication of when this will be fixed?

When you mean no sound, do you get the volume slider but nothing comes out or do you not get the volume slider at all?
Go to control panel, sound (you might need to switch to classic view to see the one im on about), then the "sounds" tab, there should be audio clips that you should be able to play, if the laptop has picked up the sound controller in it.
If you cant play these (greyed out) then the driver isnt installed properly.
There should be a update option in the boot camp program that is installed in your vista partition, run that, and if it fails you can try what is below.
Try going into device manager, uninstall/remove the drivers under the heading "sound, game and audio controllers" reboot the machine and it should install them back in again.
If it doesnt and asks for a disc, then they'll be on your max os x disc, but not sure you can install drivers individually this way. might have to reinstall the boot camp drivers from scratch.
Ive had this proplem on PC's (not macs) with drivers from manufacturer of the machines not working after windows updates. Fixed by using drivers from the audio controller manufacturer. But dont think its the same issue you are having.

  • My MacBook Pro has no sound, but the volume setting works

My 15' MacBook Pro 2012's sound is not working. You can still change the volume by pressing F10 to F12, but not actual sound comes out. The headphone jack is not red (although I have experienced that problem before and fixed it). Whether the headphones are plugged in or if they aren't, there is still no sound. I am running on OS X 10.7.5 with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory and the storage capacity is 749.3 GB total.

Have you tried a PRAM reset?

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • 2012 MacBook Pro Intel i7 (purchased May 2013) constantly drops airport connection. My 2006 MacBook Pro has no problems connecting and staying connected.

I received a 2012 MacBook Pro INtel i7 for my birthday this May 2013. It constantly drops my airport connection. My ancient 2006 MacBook Pro has no problem connecting to airport, nor staying connected. I've had to write this message several times as I keep losing the airport connection and have to reconnect. BTW: I am less than five feet from the airport base.
    Thanks for help.

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • Using MacBook Pro as Digital Optical Audio bridge...

I have an idea for my MacBook Pro, but I'd like to know if it's feasible before I go and buy what I'd need to test my plan:
I have an Xbox 360 with digital optical audio out (TOSlink), and I have a MacBook Pro with digital optical audio in (through the 3.5mm minijack on the side. So far I'm A-OK.
Now, I'd like to know if I can have the Xbox's output go into the MacBook Pro's input, and route that audio signal through the MacBook Pro to either (a) the stereo output of the MacBook Pro, or (b) (preferred) my 5.1 decoder on my Griffin FireWave.
Every time I use the Xbox, I have to unplug the audio from my speakers to the Griffin FireWave, and that's a pain because the wires are all behind my desk. If I could route the audio through my MacBook Pro, then everything would be perfect. Is this possible?
And if this isn't possible, can I use an old iMic adapter I have laying around to route the audio through the MBP?
    Thanks for your help!

I found a program called LineIn that allows 'software audio pass through in to out,' but I don't think this will pass the 5.1 channel audio through to my FireWire-connected Griffin Firewave.
Does anyone know of any way this can be done? Do you think the Audio/MIDI Setup Utility application can be of any use with this? Or is there a way to pass the digital signal straight through to the Griffin?

  • Difference in quality of iSight on Macbook Pro C2D and Macbook Pro Intel

    Hi there
I currently have a MacBook Pro Intel 2.16mhz 17" laptop and I just bought a new MacBook Pro 2.33 C2D laptop. I have noticed that the picture quality of the built in iSight camera of the standard Dual Core is much better than on my new C2D version. The new C2D version seems to have more 'noise' over the whole picture than my standard Dual Core. Does anyone know why this should be?
    Many thanks in advance

  • Leopard not wanting to install on MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo?

I want to bump up to Leopard on my two main computers (MacBook Pro Intel, and a tower, also Intel)... but as I'm using them 24/7 on projects I dare not have problems with ... I don't want any down time getting Leopard to run seamlessly on those systems.
To this end, I 'borrowed' the Leopard disks from my son, for whom I just got a new iMac ... and was going to try it out on my spare (no critical projects) laptop (MacBook Pro Intel). At the beginning of the install the pop-up tells me it can't 'install Leopard on this computer'.
Could this just be some new security device to inhibit pirating? Related specifically to new iMacs? Or am I going to have problems when I try to install the Leopard I was about to buy to upgrade all my computers?
    All ears,
    B.

FYI, an OS installer doesn't just blindly install all the OS components it contains; among other things it runs "pre-flight" & "post-flight" scripts to make sure the Mac's hardware is compatible with that version of the OS, to assemble some of the pieces (like preference files) on-the-fly prior to installing them, & to initialize & clean up some of the items placed on the drive during the installation process.
If it helps, think of it as little mechanized factory that builds customized, turnkey products based on the measurements & specifications it obtains from the buyer.
The retail version of the OS contains the generalized version of this factory; the OEM disk sets do not, since they are intended for one model only.
So, if you want to "test drive" the OS, do it on your son's Mac. You won't be violating the license terms & your test will be much more indicative of what you will see with the OS properly installed on your Macs.
