  • Leopard not wanting to install on MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo?

I want to bump up to Leopard on my two main computers (MacBook Pro Intel, and a tower, also Intel)... but as I'm using them 24/7 on projects I dare not have problems with ... I don't want any down time getting Leopard to run seamlessly on those systems.
To this end, I 'borrowed' the Leopard disks from my son, for whom I just got a new iMac ... and was going to try it out on my spare (no critical projects) laptop (MacBook Pro Intel). At the beginning of the install the pop-up tells me it can't 'install Leopard on this computer'.
Could this just be some new security device to inhibit pirating? Related specifically to new iMacs? Or am I going to have problems when I try to install the Leopard I was about to buy to upgrade all my computers?
    All ears,
    B.

FYI, an OS installer doesn't just blindly install all the OS components it contains; among other things it runs "pre-flight" & "post-flight" scripts to make sure the Mac's hardware is compatible with that version of the OS, to assemble some of the pieces (like preference files) on-the-fly prior to installing them, & to initialize & clean up some of the items placed on the drive during the installation process.
If it helps, think of it as little mechanized factory that builds customized, turnkey products based on the measurements & specifications it obtains from the buyer.
The retail version of the OS contains the generalized version of this factory; the OEM disk sets do not, since they are intended for one model only.
So, if you want to "test drive" the OS, do it on your son's Mac. You won't be violating the license terms & your test will be much more indicative of what you will see with the OS properly installed on your Macs.

  • I'm using a macbook pro with version 10.6.8 installed. whenever i try to install my software updates, it immediately asks me to restart my computer to finish the installation. after doing so and signing back on to my account no updates have been installed

I'm using a macbook pro with version 10.6.8 installed. Whenever I try to install my software updates, it immediately asks me to restart my computer to finish the installation. After doing so and signing back on to my account, nothing has changed and no updates have been installed. It still says the same 8 items need to be installed, and the same process occurs again. Any idea how I can fix this?

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:

my macbook pro early 2012 won't install release version of yosemite after being in the beta test, anyone else having any issues with this?

Received an email from apple saying thank you for being in the beta test and they tell you to download the release version from the mac app store and install it. Done this twice and it says installed successfully after rebooting twice and doing the usual install of a new OS. However when it boots up and opens your desktop it still has the Feedback assistant installed and continuity and all the new features do not work at all. Making me assume that the final release has not installed at all. Spoke to apple on the Phone and they Don't know how to solve it. Except for doing a fresh OS Install. Which i would rather not do, but might have too. currently backing up my Mac as we spec to do it

  • I was installing soundflower macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard Grey loading screen

Hello i was installing soundflower for my macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard. However when finishing the installation for soundflower and click restart computer my mac now has a grey screen with a loading bar that doesn't finish. I already try safe mode and it doesn't work. Is there a way to disable sound flower installation?

No. You use "C" to boot from the optical drive
Hold down the Option key to select a different disk drive to boot from
When it comes up with all the disk that have an operating system on them, select the one with the bootable clone on it

Guys, I been in the business working on PC and MAC for years. So I am not green at this, I was looking for some kind of option to get past the boot loader..  Which is failing.
I know how to boot into these modes.. Done tons of research before posting and couldn't find anything.
It will not go into  Internet Recovery, or any thing else.  I hear the sound .. then that is it.. I get nothing else..
I have tried clearing the NVRAM which is Option + Command + P + R
    Still nothing..
So I thought I would try here to see if maybe there was some trick out there someone might know of that would work.
What else guys?  I am hitting th keys right..

  • MacBook Pro 2009 new hard drive install results in very slow function and freezing

I just wanted to post my resolution to a problem that I had trouble finding an answer to on these forums.
    Short version:
I replaced the hard drive in my 2009 MacBook Pro because the computer froze and upon reboot the Disk Utility said it was corrupted, but with the new hard drive the computer ran very slowly and often showed the spinning rainbow wheel. I replaced the SATA cable that connects the hard drive to the motherboard and it works perfectly once again.
    Long version:
Recently my MacBook Pro (2009 running Snow Leopard) froze up and I performed a hard reset by holding down the power button. When I turned the computer back on it would not boot OS so I ran disk utility from the Snow Leopard install DVD. The test said the hard drive was corrupted, and since the computer is way past warranty I decided to change the drive out myself. I bought a 500GB Seagate Momentus 5400 Drive from Amazon, opened the computer and replaced the existing hard drive with the new one. When I first booted from the OS install DVD, my computer was not recognizing that any hard drive was present. I read somewhere on these forums that sometimes the formatting on new Seagate drives can't be read by MacBooks and they need to be reformatted using another computer, but I tried simply taking the hard drive out and putting it back in a couple of times thinking maybe I had just not plugged it in correctly. After the 4th attempt the hard drive magically showed up, and I was able to reformat the drive and install OS and even Windows XP on bootcamp.
Everything seemed to be okay but applications were running slowly considering this was a fresh drive and OS install. Over time, the computer started to hang more and more. In OS I would get the spinning rainbow wheel even when doing something as simple as opening a browser window in Chrome or trying to type into a text field. When I tried to use Windows it would simply freeze after only a short time and I'd have to do a hard reset.
I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store which was unhelpful, so I continued searching through these forums to try to figure out the problem. I noticed a lot of people had trouble with the SATA cable that came with the computer because it's quite thin and delicate, and would get damaged when changing out the hard drive. However most of these people seemed to experience a question mark when starting up the computer, whereas mine would fully boot and be functional for a time. I thought it unlikely that a damaged cable could possibly leave the computer partially functional. Finally though I gave in a dropped the $26 for a new SATA cable on Amazon. As soon as I installed it the problem was fixed, and the computer runs as fast as when I first bought it. I don't know if I damaged the cable changing the hard drive (I was extremely careful) or if my original hard drive was not actually corrupted and the cable was already damaged. I mentioned the possibility of the cable being damaged at the Apple store and the representative said that often times they fail because people carry the laptop with one hand, and because of the way this model was designed this puts a lot of pressure right on that thin cable. Regardless, if you do plan on changing out your hard drive in your MacBook keep in mind that the SATA cable is sensitive, and that if you experience problems with a fresh hard drive and OS install the SATA cable is a likely culprit.

If you think you have either a hard drive or a cable problem, to the best of my knowledge the only product that can help isolate both of them is Scannerz. You can check it out at:
    http://scsc-online.com/Scannerz.html
I think that's the correct link. If it isn't and you're interested and that's wrong, just google it. I'd also check out their downloads section, especially the sort of short document on using path isolation to detect and isolate problems.
Scannerz can detect both errors and irregularities. It uses the surface scan progress as a reference. Cable problems never show up at the same location because they're typically intermittent. Surface problems always show up at the exact same place. That's the only product (at least commercially available) that can do that.
I don't know if this information is of any value to you because it sort of sounds like you've already solved the problem, but it might be of use if you have problems in the future.
In any case, I've seen several posts on several different sites where people were reporting insulation break down on some of the SATA cables. Apparently the insulation breaks down and the cable starts shorting to the case.

check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase the Snow Leopard Disc and Install it.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like

  • 2012 MacBook Pro Intel i7 (purchased May 2013) constantly drops airport connection. My 2006 MacBook Pro has no problems connecting and staying connected.

I received a 2012 MacBook Pro INtel i7 for my birthday this May 2013. It constantly drops my airport connection. My ancient 2006 MacBook Pro has no problem connecting to airport, nor staying connected. I've had to write this message several times as I keep losing the airport connection and have to reconnect. BTW: I am less than five feet from the airport base.
    Thanks for help.

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.
    This concerns me:
