MacBook Pro is freezing-- force quit not responding

My late 2008 model macbook pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory has started freezing about every 10 minutes. The entire computer freezes up, including the clock and the spinner, and force quit isn't responsive. When I reboot everything works like normal, but after about 10-15 minutes of use, the computer freezes again and the process repeats. At first I thought it was photoshop, but It doesn't seem to matter what app is open or how big or small the task it's trying to accomplish is. It has always run a bit slow on Yosemite, but this all started suddenly last night with no warning.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Macbook Pro with Retina. Finder not responding!?

Finder locks up on my 15' Mac Book Pro with Retina making me force quit the app.  This happens consistently.  I'm using Maya and rendering out 200 image files at night, when I come back finder just spins and locks up.  Is this happening to anyone else?  Makes me think there's something wrong with the drive.  It's a brand new machine and it's all up to date as far as updates go.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.

  • Mail Won't Force Quit - Not Responding

I am running Tiger 10.4.8 on a 17" G4 Powerbook. Mail is not responding and will not quit. When I attempt to force quit, the Mail app disappears from the Force Quit view but does not actually quit {command-tab shows the Mail icon in it and then the Mail app again shows up in the Force Quit view with Not Responding next to it}. I forced a shutdown, waited a while, restarted and then ran Disk Utility to fix permissions. Attempting to run the Mail app again provides the same results. Any thoughts on what's causing this issue? Thanks in advance. Marc

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you’ll have to somehow force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • The Force Quit-Not Responding Issue has not been resolved yet?

I too keep having Force Quit issues in many apps - Final Cut, Photoshop, Mail, etc. If I do not use these apps for a while then go to them, they hang. Force quit does not work - as the app cannot be restarted after force quitting. The only solution is to reboot - you cannot even restart as nothing will force quit the apps. This has now become annoying as I am rebooting at least once or twice per day.
This occurred only recently - after the 10.5.4 update.
Checking the boards, this is a problem for many many users and still not resolved in most cases. Anyone have more information on this issue?

    Hello Jon:
As far as I can tell, there is not a general problem. That is not to say you are not having problems.
If you have not done so, try these things (in sequence, if one fixes it, stop):
    Run permission repair.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
Download the combo 10.5.4 updater and apply it (even if you did that before).

  • MacBook Pro internal and external speakers not responding

For the last 3-4 weeks, I've had odd bouts of incidents where the speakers (internal) stop responding at all.  I have a set of external speakers that are normally plugged into the computer, but they have also stopped producing sound.  Is there any way to troubleshoot this to determine the source of the problem.  (PS:  NOTHING works.  Even Skype contacts, iTunes playback, notification sounds -- everything is out.)

Bad really, coz if you could see a red light it would be much easier to solve.  The red light would indicate it was operating as a toslink (digital audio) connector and the switch that changes it from analog to digital audio was stuck.  It can be unstuck by wiggling a toothpick or cocktail stick in the socket.  It means it's much harder to diagnose what your problem is.
Suggest as a first stage that you attempt a PRAM reset followed by a SMC reset if still not working, then report back here.

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Track Pad problem - not responding

the main click portion of the track pad hardly clicks when using it, and sometimes is not responsive. The right click portion of the track pad is fine.

There are no hard wired zones on the trackpad for right and left clicks, although you can set it up to do this in System Preferences have you done that? In any case, the trackpad is engineered so that the outer portion is less clickable than the inner portion. If you really feel something is wrong, go to the Genius Bar.

  • My macbook pro (August 2010) keeps freezing when apple mail starts up. This happens every 2nd time I turn on my Macbook Pro. This forces me to hold down the power button to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a fix? Thx

My macbook pro (August 2010) keeps freezing when apple mail starts up. This happens every 2nd time I turn on my Macbook Pro. This forces me to hold down the power button to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a fix? Thx.
since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

  • My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook Pro sometimes freezes after opening iTunes.

I have had my Macbook Pro for a little over a year now and everything has been going great, except for every once in a while when I open iTunes, my Macbook Pro will freeze. I am then unable to do anything (use the trackpad, force quit, etc.). I have to wait at least 15 minutes before it settles down and I can use my MBP again. Here is the thing, while it is frozen it will unfreeze every 3-5 minutes for about a second and then freeze again. It is quite annoying! Please help! I do have the Bestbuy Accidental Damage and Protection Plan so if worse comes to worse I can just take it there. The only thing is, they would need to ship it away for 2-3 weeks and I am in the middle of a semester in Nursing School so I really need my MBP right now. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Here are a couple of things to try:
PRAM reset: power off the machine.
Then power up pressing option, command, P,R before the start up chime, hold the those keys down until the gear stops spinning.
If this doesn't help try a smc reset:
power off the mac, hold left side side shift key, control. option, poower up hold the keys till the gear stops.
If this doesn't work post back and we can try some other things.
    All the best

  • Late 08 MacBook Pro Hard Freezing in Vista - Only Happens when in Firefox??

    Hi All,
I know there are many topics for macbook crashes etc but I think that "blue screens" or "freezing during intensive graphics" are among the many different issues out there, caused by different things. Personally I can play games perfectly fine, everything works perfect, all apart from one thing: Firefox.
I want to focus this topic on ONLY users who are finding their Late 08 MacBook Pro hard freezes but ONLY when using Firefox.
By "hard freeze" I mean the whole of vista locks up; no response keyboard/mouse, nothing, even closing the lid does not put it in standby. You physically have to press and hold the power button to restart it.
Out of the dozens and dozens of freezes I experienced on my macbook, absolutely 100% of the freezes occured while I was loading/browsing a page in Firefox. At one point it was happening within minutes of a fresh boot, but I'm right now posting using Internet Explorer, have been browsing for hours, using multiple tabs, and I have not experienced a single freeze.
Please everyone bear in mind, this is NOT a topic about your macbook crashing during 3D gaming, this is JUST about it crashing whilst firefox is active.
Who else here has noticed their computer freezing during web browsing in firefox? Think carefully, are you one of us?
What I don't understand is why only firefox? And how can such a simple single piece of software cause a hardware freeze? It seems very bizarre but it is definitely the cause for me, 100%.
I just want to establish that I am not alone here

    @ The hatter:
Just updated my info below btw
Vista is indeed current and up to date, with SP1 with Apple BC 2.1
I've done the sfc /scannow and it didn't find any problems.
I'm running the latest version of Firefox now (3.0.5), but I have been keeping it up to date, and used to run older versions. This doesn't seem to change anything. I run many extensions in Firefox, but as Mr Fusion says he's experienced crashes in both Google Chrome and Safari (I haven't tried them), I doubt that's the issue. However I'll install those browsers and test to see if I get the same results.
Ive run Vista 64-bit for two years and use FF daily, alolng with Opera some, IE7 (and now IE8 beta 2).
Does this mean you are not using a Late 08 MacBook Pro and are using the older model?
Turn off disk cache in Firefox? I usually do, because otherwise Safari and FF do a lot of disk I/O.
Yeah I have Offline Storage set to 0MB, assuming that is the setting you are referring to?
So shouldn't everyone who has a late 08 Macbook pro with Bootcamp be experiencing this problem? How come some of us have and some of us don't?
I think the problem is that this problem is quite intermittant and random. Sometimes I can use firefox for hours and hours without a crash, and other times it'll happen relatively quickly.

  • Satellite U305-S7432 freezes and does not respond sometimes using Win XP

    Hello.
    I have a Satellite U305-S7432 notebook.
Originally it came with Vista but I reformatted with XP Pro. I have installed all updates up to service pack 3.
My problem is that sometimes when I try to restart the computer it simply freezes and does not respond at all to any input. I notice that this happens if I close and later open the lid (meaning that the computer goes input standby mode and comes back).
Please note that the standby mode works perfectly fine and the computer leaves standby fine but afterwards when I try to restart, the computer will simply hang instead of restarting.
If it never enters standby mode, the restart takes place as expected.
I have installed all drivers and there are no question marks in Device Manager. I updated to the latest chipset driver from Intel (for the mobile 965) as well. Lastly, I also tried adding /forceresetreg to my boot.ini (as suggested by: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822624) but to no avail.
    Any ideas?

This is a Toshiba US notebook series and you should check the Toshiba US driver page for available drivers:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp
If you will not find the XP drivers at this page then you could try to install some single drivers for Sat U300 from the Toshiba European page but Im not quite sure if such XP drivers will run on you Sat U305. But its worth a try!
    Good luck

I still have lots of memory.
But this message is showing when i go to applications- utilities and console...

does anyone know what this means and how can I fix it?
It seems to freeze more when I use the finger pad to move the mouse?
Its becoming very annoying especially when I'm trying to watch a programme on bbc iplayer.
    Many Thanks

Your hard disk is failing and requires replacement. Replacement is not terribly expensive and can be performed by someone sufficiently adept with computer repair. If that's not you, an Apple Store can perform the replacement.
    Back up your data ASAP.

  • MacBook Pro frequent freezes problem

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro frequently freezes despite very light use. I took it to a "genius" today, but he was not very helpful. Actually, it froze again right at the apple store while they were checking it. The log showed some errors from Quicksilver right before the freeze and they suggested disabling Quicksilver for a while. At the same time they said that Quicksilver is "solid" and should not cause any serious problems. They also recommending deleting flash plugins, but admitted that it was unlikely that a flash plugin was causing freezes.
Nothing came up during hardware tests, and I already did a clean reinstall of the OS (twice).
I would appreciate any suggestions. The Macbook Pro is 6 months old, 17in, 2.66 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. There is 300+ GB of free space on the hard disk.
    Thanks

I had similar issues. I formatted, did a clean install, and ran software update to make sure everything was up to date. Then I logged in for the first time, ran handbreak and 6 vlc windows and it froze within 10 minutes. This is most likely not caused by Quicksliver or any other software. You should register your complaints in this thread to keep them all together:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768351&tstart=0
Then you should call apple care to register your complaint. I've scheduled a call for tomorrow.

but when i plug it in sponaneously - it freezes completely.

I get the same type of problem with my usb hub when my usb3-enabled hard drives are connected, but not all the time.
Without the usb hub i never have a problem, which seems like the hub is the problem.
Things started to happen when I started using usb3-capable hard drives

  • HT1338 why does my macbook pro keep freezing up and how do I resolve it

macbook pro keeps freezing up...how do I resolve that issue

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. Do not post thousands of lines from the log. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
