MacBook Pro is stuck at start-up screen.

I've only had my MacBook Pro for a week, and the problem started last night. Whenever I start my computer to OS X, it stops at the screen with the Apple logo and the spinning load icon. I've tried to hold down "C" during startup to activate the Install Disc, but it didn't work.
The funny thing is that, with Bootcamp, I can hold down the option key and start the MBP up in Windows no problem.
Can anybody please help me with a solution?

Run fsck.
1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
/sbin/fsck -fy
3. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again.

  • Cannot install Windows 7 Pro; gets stuck on "Starting Windows" screen

I have read dozens of posts on this topic but none has helped yet.
My system has Windows 8 with UEFI. I want to install Windows 7 Pro on another partition. I have turned off Secure Boot in the UEFI/BIOS. When I try to install Windows 7 Pro from a DVD it shows "windows is loading files" and then gets stuck on "Starting Windows"
for ever. This happens even when no USB peripherals are attached.
I have already wasted many days on this. I hope someone can help.
    Thanks!

    Hi friends of the internet
I have been reading several forums regarding the issue of installing windows 7 (64 bit) to a computer that have had windows 8 installed previously or just a GPT formatted disk.
    My Case:
Windows version installed: Windows 7 Professional N with Service Pack 1 (x64) or Windows 7 Professional (x64)
    Computer used: Samsung laptop
    Model Code: NP53U4C-A02SE
    See the specks here:
    http://www.samsung.com/dk/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/notebook/NP535U4C-A02SE-spec
Create a USB install disk that not freezes at ”starting windows” screen:
First I followed this great guide (Thanks Daniel):
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    STOP AFTER STEP 13!
    1. Open a command line in administrator mode
    2. run DISKPART
    3. type LIST DISK
    4. Look for the disk number that represents your USB drive
    5. type SELECT DISK # where # represents the number of your USB drive. Get this right or you will wipe a different drive out.
    6. type CLEAN
    7. type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    8. type SELECT PARTITION 1
    9. type ACTIVE
    10. type FORMAT fs=fat32 quick
    11. type assign
    12. The drive should now be formatted and marked as active and fat32. Do not format the drive as NTFS or you will only be able to boot into the installer in BIOS mode.
    13. Now you will need to copy the contents of the windows 7 install dvd to the USB with a regular copy paste from windows explorer.
Here comes a very weird hack... I do not know why it works, but I think it is all about flash drive data structure. I did these steps on a win 7 prof. computer.
    (Let’s assume it’s drive E:)
Make a copy of your e:\efi\microsoft folder to e.g. your desktop.
    Delete the e:\efi folder
Copy the \efi folder from a windows 8 installation disk (I used Windows 8 (x64) Professional) to the e:\efi folder. Sorry I cannot provide this for you.
Here comes the weird part. Then delete e:\efi\microsoft you just copied from the win 8 installation disk.
Copy the \microsoft folder form the desktop to e:\efi\microsoft
Resume the guide from step 18.:
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    18. Insert the USB in the machine and turn it on and boot into the UEFI/BIOS loader and check for boot options. On the ASUS Zenbook it detected two boot options on the USB drive. One was UEFI and one was regular BIOS. I made the
UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    My bios setup was:
    Secure Boot = Disable
OS Mode Selection = CSM and UEFI OS
Boot Device Priority = I made the UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    The installation should start normal.
    E.g. See this guide:
    www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/186875-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-7-a.html
    What I did was:
    Select custom installation (Advanced).
    Click Drive options (Advanced).
Delete all partitions (this might not be needed). When I did not delete all partitions I was asked every time after the install, during start up by the windows boot manager to select ether win 8 or win 7.
Click new (DO NOT make Changes in the size of the disk), apply, see NOTE!
Edit the Primary partition as you want it e.g. divide it to more partitions.
Select the one you will install windows on and do a normal install.
I do not make changes in the Bios after install. The Boot priority is automatic set to “Windows boot manager”. If I change the boot mode back to OS Mode Selection = UEFI OS, the computer will freeze at the “starting windows” screen again.
All this worked for me, good luck. There might be more to it, but this is a start.
By the way, the start up time for a MBT install was 37 s. And for the GPT it was 49 s.
Remember if we stand on each other’s shoulders we will reach higher
    J.
NOTE: Here the installation program should create three partitions automatically!
Partition 1 - System - The EFI System partition that contains the NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and other files that are needed to boot the system, such as drivers.
Partition 2 - MSR - The Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition that reserves space on each disk drive for subsequent use by operating system software.
Partition 3 - Primary - Where Windows is to be installed to.
If this isn’t the cast you are not installing in UEIF mode. To check for this (thanks again Daniel):
If you need to find out if you have booted into BIOS mode or UEFI mode when the installer starts you can press SHIFT+F10 when the welcome installer shows up to open a cmd prompt. from here you will likely be at X:\Sources. Type cd .. to
go back a dir and move into \Windows\Panther\
    Then type notepad setupact.log
Within this file do a ctrl+f and search for
        Callback_BootEnvironmentDetect: Detected boot environment:
It should either say BIOS or UEFI.
To check if your disk is in the GPT format.
    Open the command prompt.
    Type: DISKPART
    Type: List Disk
See for the star (*) in the GPT column

  • Why would my MacBook Pro be stuck on a Gray Screen?

Today when I went to start up my MacBook Pro the screen was completely black (it appeared to be lit but still a  lit black), then I called Apple support and they walked me through a few steps, which just made the screen white. Along with the white screen it displays the Apple logo, then a circle with a line through it (like a do not enter sign), then a gray file with a question mark in it. These 3 images just kind of scroll through on repeat.
I am not really looking for ways to fix it, I do have an appointment with the Genius Bar, however I was hoping to just understand a little behind why this would be happening... And if you had any ideas on what the cost I'm looking at for the fix. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro that has been updated with the latest software. It was working perfectly fine yesterday, and I have never had any problems with it until this right now.
Please help and thank you so much!

  • MacBook Pro freeze on apple start up screen

My MacBook Pro is getting stuck on the apple start up page. It loads for a bit then stops.

Your not up to speed yet on Mac's, so I suggest you take the machine to a local PC/Mac software repair in your area to determine your situation. (or better have a Mac experienced friend do it)
Since it's used machine and AppleCare doesn't apply (your out of warranty) Apple or a authroized service is going to charge a lot to fix your machine and they will likely determine a hard drive replacement is in order.
However your problem might be it was simply applying a firmware update, which looks similar to the what your describing. Or it might be a bad sector or a outdated third party kernel extension file, both which are solvable in software without replacing the entire hard drive.
If the hard drive does need replacing, then the local PC/Mac service should offer you a better price than what Apple charges.
Apple won't solve the software issues as it's too time consuming, and since your new to Mac's and can't determine the software issue for yourself, then your sort of stuck.
However if you have a Mac experienced friend, you can point them here.

  • Macbook pro gets stuck on the startup screen...

This question is a little odd as i am typing it off of my macbook pro right now, but my macbook fell of my bed and then it froze. I then resarted it and it just sat on the start up screen with an ideling circle under the apple logo along with a loading bar at first. I let it sit for about 25 minutes and then realized that it was going to work.  I then tried to restart it in safe mood and that didnt work and i dont have the disk so i cant boot from that but then i tried this...
Hold command S on start up and then type
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    and then
    chmod 775 /
    and then
    exit
After that it booted up and now i am using it as previously stated but my only probelm is turned it off to see if it would come back on no problem and it doesnt i had to go through the same commands over again to get it to work.  So any suggestions on how to get it back to normal?
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro hung up on start-up screen

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to problem solve for my sister-in-law's Macbook Pro,
She got it about a year and a half ago, so I'm assuming it is running Snow Leopard or Lion at this point but there is no real certainty right now.
I don't think that will make a huge difference though,
This is the screen she gets when she tries to turn on the computer,
I had her try and start it in safe mode and she then gets this screen,
I'm not too familiar with that screen and would like some help diagnosing what that symbol in the last pic means!
    Thanks,
    ~Mic

First screen is Safe Mode activiating automatially to attempt to repair the drive, else it's trying to apply a firmware update and it's not succeeding. Both look similar.
Second screen is Safe Mode (you say) and it says it can't boot from that drive, could be a software or hardware problem.
    There could be these problems:
    Hardware: Severe
The boot drive is dead, a cable to the boot drive is malfunctioning, the Mac is malfunctioning.
Software: Severe if you don't have backups of your files off the machine, otherwise not severe as software can be replaced and backup files returned.
There are more tests in my User Tip here that can be performed to determine what is going on.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Do them in order and if Recovery HD doesn't boot (10.7 or later) or Internet Recovery/Disk Utility doesn't show the drive, then that's likely a hardware issue.
You might need to overwrite OS X with a new copy, or erase and install OS X even if it's a directory or software issue.
    Data recovery before erasing.
If there are no backups of the user files off the machine, then if the drive still works mechanically, data can be recovered depending upon if Filevault was used or not, if the file structure is still ok etc.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
If the drive doesn't work mechanically, then there are expensive platter recovery services that can read the drive.
There are also local PC/Mac computer repair shops that can address the data recovery and software repair issues, however if it's under warranty/AppleCare you might only want to do data recovery as it's passive. Then take the computer for hardware repairs to Apple as they don't do data recovery.

  • Macbook pro is stuck on my home screen and will not respond to commands

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Lion this week and came home and opened my Macbook pro. It immediately came on, but took a minute or so for the cursor for the mouse to appear. At the top of the screen "Finder" is highlighted. Problem is, no matter what program I click on, the computer will not acknowledge anything. Help!

First try a Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least Ten seconds... (But can take Longer)... until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons
If no joy... Try a Restore...

  • My MacBook Pro is stuck on the loading screen and sounds as if its about the take off?!

Hi everyone. About 3 hours ago my laptop suddenly became very unresponsive and began freezing a lot. I cleared the cookies on Firefox, but the problem carried on so I tried rebooting. Now it has been stuck on the loading screen for about half an hour, sounding like a rocket ready to take off.. I brought it second hand and I don't have an installation CD, at least if I do it's not here at uni with me anyway.. Any ideas?! Thanks

Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.

  • Why does my macbook pro gets stuck in the startup screen?? its the older versiom

its like stuck in the startup screen. i tried a few times and even took out the battery twice. please help!! i have some important document stored inside i cannot retrieve now!!!!
i think the operating system is like 10.7.something

You might have a failing hard drive. If you're running 10.7.x, try booting into your Recovery partition - holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting. Once at the installatio screen, use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive. If it can be repaired, you should be good to go - if it can't be repaired then you're going to need to go shopping for a new drive.
