MacBook Pro is VERY slow after Mountain Lion upgrade

Hello folks, I have a MacBook Pro that was running very well before I upgraded to Mountain Lion...since then it runs worse than a Windows machine.
The configuration is as follows:
Model Name:          MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,3
  Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
  Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
  Number of Processors:          1
  Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
  L3 Cache:          6 MB
  Memory:          8 GB
  Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
  SMC Version (system):          1.70f5
  Serial Number (system):          C0xxxxxxF92
  Hardware UUID:          5BCBC5E9-E531-55F0-A712-B40886C7B45F
  Sudden Motion Sensor:
  State:          Enabled
As stated, I have 8 GB of ram, under system memory I have the following info:
Free: 863 MB
Wired: 1.28 GB
Active: 3.60 GB
Inactive 2.27 GB
Used 7.15 GB
VM Size 306.76 GB
Page Ins 1.22 GB
Page Out 745.4 MB
Swap Used 2.12 GB
Disk usage is:
Space Utilized 454.49 GB
Space Free 294.8 GB
I have rebooted on many occasions and it is still slow.
Any ideas as to what could be going on?

Regardless of whether you think you need it, uninstall it and test to see if the slowness problem is solved.
If it isn't put it back if you must, but there's no point trying to look for another cause till you've eliminated this one. You have a huge amount swaps which is what is causing your slowdown. 90% chance that's your AV software doing that.

  • SD reader on macbook pro retina stopped working after mountain lion upgrade

I tried to use the SD reader on my new MacBook Pro Retina tonight and I can insert the SD card and the mac does not see it. It worked prior to my upgrading to mountain lion. Any ideas?

I also have a Mac Pro Retina and have the exact same problem after upgrading.  I will say that despite the SD card not showing up on my desktop or in the finder window, I am able to import to Lightroom 4 with no problems and I get an error message when i withdraw it, asking me to "EJECT IT PROPERLY".  APPLE! Please help us.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot after Mountain lion upgrade

I bought the Mountian Lion upgrade and it installed fine on my MacBook Pro, and the machine worked fine yesterday.  I performed a normal shutdown, and today it won't boot up.  The Apple logo and the spinning pinwheel is all I get.  Is there a known issue?

  • My macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion

my macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion?  Is anyone else having this issue?

If you don't use an SSD and bump your RAM up to 8 Gb's you may experience slow speeds, but I noticed slow speeds with your general configuration in SL.
one thing you should consider right now is, Spotlight is Reindexing your hard drive, that takes time and resources, (resources which you don't necessarily have to spare).
If you continue feeling like your performance is slow, you have a few options with this computer (I have the same one).
the express card slot can house a wintec SSD drive. That little door on the side of your machine is pure gold for a really quick solution for speeding up your machine. I have one in mine right now i'm using as a scratch disk for CS6 but I used to boot from it, and the speed boost was out of this world.
You could take out the internal HDD and put in a new SSD (I have a Vertex 4 from OCZ) it is completely over kill but my experience is pretty fast and I keep up with the later MBP models colleagues have.
There are some other options for you like taking out the optical drive (however I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about that here). Google Data Doubler.
You need to also set it to always use the 9600 chipset, this will increase performance a lot too. to do this go to system preferences>energy saver>Better Performance. This switches the video card to the better one and makes a world of difference.
Lastly, your RAM. after an EFI Firmware update, our computer support up to 8GBs of RAM. Do it!

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow, Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow

Why is Safari so slow after Mountain Lion upgrade?

I have a home Optimum wifi network with Boost connecting to an Airport, with a second Airport extending, and an Airport Express extending. I have a MacBook Pro, last year's model, two iMacs, a year old each, and an older iMac. (If necessary I can get all the models etc, but I just want to express the problem). The two new iMacs and MBP are running Mountain Lion. The older Lion.
Since upgrading to ML my connection speed both over the wifi and directly connecting to the router has dropped from 30-50 down and 5 up to between 1-4 down and 4 up. I have had the cable folks here to test lines. We've swapped out the modem with a new one. I bought a new netgear N600. Everything led to the same result.
Here's the odd part. When restarting the modem and plugging it directly into the powerbook, initial tests show 30-50 up and 5 down. But once you reconnect to wifi, lose speed, the re-connect directly to the modem the slowness persists directly connected to the modem.
So I start suspecting Mountain Lion. BUT the older iMac cannot be upgraded to Mountain and is still running Lion and has the same issue. The equipment is in the same place it's always been. We've added no electronics that would be interfering with signals.
Everyone is stumped and looking suspicously at the computer and OS. Please help. I'm beginning to hear the bing bong bing bong of dial up in my head.

Ive been too busy to do anything about it but im very annoyed by how slow it is so i have to do something now, what can I do? can someone help with some specific steps? someone posted something about changing the network settings but I wasnt sure if that applied in europe (spain)... any guideance in non-technical terms please?

  • MacBook Pro runs very slow after upgrade to Yosemite?  Why did you turn my Mac into a Windows computer?

I upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (non-retina).  Now the system is incredibly slow.
    1) wake-up form sleep takes up to a minute
    2) Various icons will not open or respond until I have clicked on it three or four times and get the spinning beach ball (Finder, Calendar, iTunes)
    3) Using Outlook for Mac app - similar issue as 2 when trying to send mail, add attachments or do anything
I am very frustrated by this upgrade.  Any recommendations for speeding the system back to Mountain Lion levels?

  • MacBook Pro 7,1 SLOW with Mountain Lion

    Hi there!!
Well my problem is with my 2010 Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz Intel C2D is really slow and it always shows the spinning beachball  even when open a new tab in Safari or  any other app, when play a song or a video on iTunes it pauses several times, the video gets freeze but the audio continues.
Just a few months ago I upgraded the Ram to 8 Gb (Corsair 1067) and the Hdd to a 640 gb Toshiba, thinking that the problem would be the OS I made a clean install of Mountain Lion and the problem continued, ran the AHT and it shows an error with the Ram, I changed the wrong module with one of the 2 gb that the computer came with but the problem continues, I've been monitoring the system, temperature, ram, hd and cpu (made an stress test) and it all just seems to be fine, but is not...
Hope you can help me please!!

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Macbook Pro won't start after Mountain Lion download.

Downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2007-08 Macbook Pro. Internet was painfully slow (60kb/sec, usually 15 mgb/sec). After not using it a week while vacationing, I started it up, and it was working fine until it randomly shut down and brought up an error screen (hence the reason it shut down) and asked if I wanted to boot normally. I powered it down; now it won't start at all. Power button doesn't work, demounting the battery for a minute and remounting doesn't work, nothing works. I have a genius bar appointment soon, but am wondering if anyone has some advice.

Close problem - I believe the problem is RAM is storing your last data, and not releasing it, so you cannot boot it. Trying removing RAM fully, then starting.

  • Formatting my HD very slow after Mountain Lion crash

Hello everyone, I downloaded Mountain Lion and everything was great. Suddenly, all my apps crashed at the same time. I couldn't even Force Quit so I decided to turn the mac off by pressing the button. After that, when I turned it on it never started the OS, what I had was the Apple Logo and a spinning icon.
I backed up some files I needed into another computer via Firewire (those files were very very slow when copied, like for 600 MB 2 hours).
Now I am trying to erase the disk so I can do a Clean Install of ML but it is taking forever. I am afraid it's a HD issue. I read this problem was caused by Sophos antivirus so that makes a little bit happier.
Is it normal that it takes so long to erase the disk? It has been like for 15 minutes.
Thanks in advance for your help guys.

It depends on what options you chose for erase. If you chose any kind of overwrite 15 minutes may not be unreasonable (certainly no on a 7-pass overwrite, but even on a single pass overwrite 15 minutes could  be used up depending on the size of your disk and how full it was).
From your description, I have to say I'd suspect a HD failure rather than Sophos. Still, if you're wiping the disk we'll never know till you try to reinstall and see how you get on. If you choose to migrate from a backup, you'll have to start up in Safe Mode (hold down the shift key while powering on) to make sure Sophos gets bypassed. Actually, try 'shift-command-v' while you power on, which will show you the log as it boots up. You might get some clue as to where its hanging, if it hangs.

  • Macbook Pro won't reboot after mountain lion installation.

I installed the new Mountain Lion o/s and the installation was sucessful. However, when the computer started to
reboot by itself, it just stuck on the grey screen with the logo and the turning wheel. It has been like this for hours.
What should I do to fix this problem? Please help. The computer was purchased during Christmas 2011.

Call Apple support and they can talk you through getting back to a restore.
It appeared that my disk was a little corrupt before performing the upgrade.  You should use diskutility to verify and repair your disk before doing this upgrade.
Or just hold the option key down on boot up to see if you can get to the restore utility.

  • Battery drains very fast after Mountain lion upgrade

After I upgraded the OS from Lion to Mountain Lion battery drains very fast in my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2010).
    Drains approxymately 1% every minute.
    I am now on 10.8.2
    Any solutions? Any Help?

Hope we find some solution at the earliest.
Or else, I will have to roll back to Lion and my $20 is lost for 10.8.1
    I am really disappointed.
