MacBook Pro just shut off, disk utility gives a strange report, please help
My MacBook Pro just turned off for no reason. I started it back up and in the Finder under devices to the left where it usually says "My Name"'s MacBook Pro, it now has a (2) beside it. I repaired permissions and got the following report:Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Does anyone have any idea what this might mean?
Also, when I started it back up, the hard drive made the same sound as when I insert a CD or DVD into the computer.

you could have a hardware problem with your drive though.
verify the disk (not permissions) using disk utility and if it reports any errors, boot from the leopard install DVD and repair the drive using disk utility there.
you can change the name of the computer and get rid of (2) in system preferences->sharing.

My Macbook Pro just shuts off.....not very happy
I got my 17" MBP a week ago Saturday. Everything was fine for almost a week. Friday it shut odwn on me three times. I called Apple Care and they walked me through a series of steps that supposedly would take care of the problem: remove the battery, press and hold ctrloptionR, while turning the computer on and pressing 'P' (I think). It seemed to do the trick, as I had no problems until today.
This morning it would start up, I'd be on it for a few minutes and it would just shut off. It did this about four or five times. Then this evening - it has done it twice. It just goes black and shuts down.
My settings for sleep are set correctly, my battery is charged correctly - this is just very upsetting.
I didn't think Macs did stuff like this. I had so many problems with PC's and laptops over the years, I was hoping I had escaped some of this.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone know WHY this would happen?
I'm calling Apple Care tomorrow and getting to the bottom of this. I want a reason/solution or a new MB.
Thanks for your help!Hi. I just did the update over the weekend. I had my MacBook pro (1st Gen) just shut down and didn't think much of it after about an hour of use. I put the charger on it for a couple days and left today on a business trip. I assume I had a full charge. I got about one third through a movie while flying. usually with the right settings I can get a movie and some work done. Anyway the machine just shut down. It would not reboot. It would try but fail like it had not enough power to complete the boot. The interesting thing is when I press the battery indicater button on the back it was showing four green lights which is about right given the amount of the movie I got through. Three hours later in Toronto it boots like nothing was ever wrong. However after about 5 mins it just shut itself down again. Wait a half hour it will do the same thing the battery shows about an hour remaining at this point but it won't stay running. I don't think the battery needs to be calibrated I mean it shows what looks to be the right time remaining when it does boot. Also I didn't even get 40 mins out of it after a fresh charge? I am like everyone else here hoping for an answer. I was going to go buy a new battery but I hit the boards first and it looks like that might not be the answer. Just thought I would give my experience in case it helps someone out there find a fix and the more that make apple aware of this problem the better.

I have an MacBook Pro 10.6, using disk utility I tried to verify my disk, but it came up with the message, please use your start up disk, I tried this, starting the computer up and pressing C, but it ejected the disk, the same thing happened while I running the computer. Is the hard drive damaged as laptop doesn't seem to recognize the start up disk ? If so, I presume I will have to put in a new one.
There haven't been any problems with the computer, apart from a sticky curser,I have run a permissions programme from disk utility, there were a lot of different ones, but it seem to be able to fix them.
Any comments or ideas ?

Next to startup from the disk, have it inserted, hold c or option/alt (wired or built in keyboard) and then boot the computer and or select the disk when it appears and click the arrow.
Disk Utility is under the Utilities menu on the second screen.

If you used the wrong 10.6 disk, it will spit it out or have issues, use the one that came with that machine or if it's defective, call Apple for a new one. -
MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal. Anyone have this issue before? I've only had this for about 3mos. I called apple support. They tried one thing then said I have to take to the apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power it's as if the unit is completely dead. Even with the mains plugged in there is no green or orange light to say its charging or full charged. The battery was fully charged anyway seconds before the screen went off.
When you say no green or orange light are you refering to the little led on the magsafe connector? That could mean either the charger/cable are bad or the circuitry in the MBP is faulty. Since this is a brand new MBP best bet is to take it back to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar staff take a look. They can determine if it needs to be reparired or replaced.

By memory, do you mean space on your hard disk?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

My macbook pro just turned off on me twice! What could this be?
Every morning I wake up and charge my macbook. Today I turned it on, and instantly put my ipod to charge off the laptop before it even booted up. (never really dont that before) Well after it turned on it was fine, but it just shut off on me. So I disconnected the ipod, and turned it back on. This time I waited til it booted up and then i put my ipod to charge. I notice that iTunes didnt open up automatically. Continued onto the internet. As I was browsing it shut off on me a second time. Anyone have an idea as to why it just randomly shut off on me? Please advise. I am really nervous about this computer for the simple fact it costed me alot of money, and I was not able to afford AppleCare. Please let me kno if you may have an idea as to why it shut off on my on its own... Thank you in advance
Can you hear the fans spinning up? At normal idle (2000 rpm on my Mid 2012 non-Retina 13-inch MBP) they are not audible except in a very quite room. They have to get to about 2500 rpm for a person with normal hearing to notice them running in a typical office or home environment.
Will the computer start if you hold the SHIFT key during boot? That takes longer because it does some directory checks, so keep holding SHIFT until you see a message that you are in Safe Mode or you get a stable desktop.
To further test, we need to know your exact MBP variant. If the computer will not start, you can enter your serial number into this Apple Support page:

That will give you the exact model info.
On pre-Unibody MBPs (Early 2008 and older, the serial number is under the detachable battery. On later models it is on the case bottom in fine type (a magnifier helps).
Once we know your exact model we can offer a reset procedure, or at least tell you how to run Apple Hardware Test to check for hardware issues. -

So I've had this problem from my macbook since months ago. It sometimes just shuts off by itself, the screen turning black and won't turn on until like after a few hours (sometimes a day, but sometimes you could also immediately open it just like that.)
When it shuts off and you plug the adapter it is still charging, the lights on the side of the macbook book still lights up just fine if you press the button on the side. the only problem is that it wont open until after a few minutes, hours or days (very unpredictable) (also tapping the macbook helps, I dont know if it "really" helps or not, but it works sometimes.) But when it open it will be working fine until another couple of weeks or 3 or a month (again unpredictable)
I dont know what's wrong with my laptop, please help me. It would be greatly appreciated! thank you so much in advance!Hold the power button down for 10+ seconds. Then bring the MBP to an Apple store for an evaluation.

I have a early 2011 macbook pro
its been having random shut off problems
i've tried reinstalling os, updating, resetting smc/pram/nvram
macbook will randomly shut off, sometimes few minutes into turning it on or hour or 2 of using it, its random
it'll shut off with the charger connected as well
it'll also shut off when using the battery, even when its around 90% charged.
Once it shuts off the battery indicator will show nothing but once pluged in to the charger and reboot, the indicator will show plenty of charge
is there something wrong with the battery or connection?

It looks like your NVIDIA graphic is damaged. If you need your computer now, you can fix the computer downloading gfxCardStatus and selecting the option to use only the integrated graphic, so that kernel panic won't appear anymore. Note that you won't be able to use the NVIDIA graphic, so the graphic performance may be worse than with this graphic.
Of course, that's a temporary fix, because you should take the computer to an Apple Store as soon as possible to get the Mac repaired. As the NVIDIA graphic is not soldered, the repair won't be expensive -
Macbook Pro Lion shuts off during boot up
I have a 13" MacBook Pro purchased in 2011. I had the internet lock up on me and hard shut down the computer. Now when I press the power button, the machine begins to boot up and the apple pops up then the progress bar pops up and the wheels starts to spin, but the machine shuts down about 5 seconds into it.
I have seen this problem on older posts (pre-Lion) and one solution was to hold option during start-up and then boot off th esystem restore disc, but Lion is all internet based, so no disc here. When I do that, it pops the option to select an internet source, which I do, then the HD symbol pops up with an arrow below it. When I clikc the arrow (which is the only apparent option) it does the same thing and shhuts off at the same point.
HELP!Try booting with command-R. This will boot into the repair parttion. From here you can run disk utility and other programs. You can also do a repair installation of Lion which will almost certainly solve the problem. Doing so shouldn't wipe out your user data, but installing OS updates will be required.
