MacBook pro kernel panic, now won't boot. Am I doomed?

My MacBook Pro 15" (bought in Jan 2012) just had a kernel panic and now won't boot up.. Am I doomed?

No, it doesn't necessarily mean the hard drive is toast. You can start by doing the following:
Boot into Safe Mode then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If the drive is OK and you can repair permissions, then see if the computer will boot up normally. If it doesn't boot up normally then reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 froze, now won't boot.

    Hey all,
I have a Macbook Pro that i got in 2010.  It has been a great machine.  I have done a couple of upgrades on the ram and hard drive. For a while there were not any problems.  But last week my computer froze up, app by app, till the whole computer was unusable.  Then I restarted the computer and it said that the hard drive was having problems.  I tried doing all the repairs on the hard drive, eventually replacing it with a SSD because I thought the drive was dead.  So I plugged in the SSD and it had a hard time writing to it the first time I booted the computer with internet recovery, but when I tried it again it allowed me to install OS X Mountain Lion again.  Got it installed, then the exact same thing happened to me, each app froze, till the whole computer froze, now the machine won't boot, or even let me do any of the keyboard boot options.  It just sits at a blank screen and gets hot.  Any ideas?  I really need my computer to be working right now and i don't have the money for an additional one.
    Thanks

Yes, unfortunately, yet another Apple device failure. Question marked answered because repaired under warranty. BUT:
It is embarrassing as a Mac bigot to have had this problem and in the few months since ALSO had:
    - iMac 24" (condensation inside screen, never happened to any other company's monitors)
    - iPhone 3GS white screen of death
    and before this:
    - MacBook Pro 17" defective graphics, motherboard replaced
    - PowerBook G4 17" defective sound system, motherboard replaced
    - eMac G4 700, screen fizzled into showing 1/4 display size in center, thrown away
    - PowerBook G3 500 FW defective, whole machine replaced
    - PowerBook G3 300 defective, machine replaced
    - PowerBook Duo 280c defective keyboard, replaced
and I can't even remember past that.
Can't make fun of ugly clunky Dells or HPs anymore after this experience.

  • 2007 Macbook pro kernel panic, hard drive problem?

    Hello!
I've been trying to sort this for a few weeks now, and I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the situation.
    Problem:
I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2GB/120GB) which a few weeks ago suddenly died on me. It has what I believe is called a kernel panic. On startup a grey screen falls down with a box saying that I need to restart the computer.
I took it to my local apple store where they booted an OSX (not sure which) from an external drive (I think it was using a firewire cable). The MacBook appeared to work fine from this external hard drive, but when disk utility was run on the internal hard drive, the disk utility eventually froze.
Based on this info, the guy there deduced (fairly reasonably I suppose) that the problem must be my hard drive, and replacing my hard drive should solve this. So  bought a
    Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB,Internal,7200 RPM,6.35 cm (2.5").
The equipment I now have to try and get my MacBook to work:
    - An iMac 2.7 Ghz i5 (8gb Ram) running Mac OSX 10.7.5
    - A replacement hard drive for the MacBook (Seagate Momentus)
    - A SATA HArd drive USB docking station
    - A 500gb iOmega Hard drive with Firewire 800 cables
    - The 2 original install disks for Tiger that came with the MacBook Pro
    - A working .dmg of retail snow leopard
What I have tried so far:
I have formatted the replacement hard drive correctly (GUID) for Mac OSX. If I turn the macbook pro on with the new hard drive in, a folder icon with a question mark in it flashes in the middle of the screen... If I put in the original install disk, it starts to read it (apple logo and spinning wheel) and then eventually kernel panics. When I hold option on start up, the 'Mac OSX Install Disk 1" is the only option available (the cd/dvd drive must be working if it recognises the disk here i assume?) but when I select it, it spins for a bit, then kernel panics.
My next approach was to try and create an installable and bootable version of an OSX on an external hard drive. (I have tried this with both the original Tiger install disk, and with the leopard.dmg)... I followed the readily available instructions online on how to do this, and was able to restore the first partion on the external hard drive with the OSX install disk image.... The problem I have then face is installing the osx onto the second partition.
This seems to be because my newish iMac/OSX wont let me boot any OSX installer CD/firewire or otherwise, other than the original operating system for the iMac.
I thought this wouldn't matter, as I would be able to run the installer when I plugged the iOmega into my MacBook pro. The problem I now have is that the Macbook wont recogninise the iOmega when it is connected by firewire. It will only recognise it when connected by USB, but when I try and run the installer, it spins for a while then kernel panics. I believe this is because MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.
So... hardware wise, could this be anything other than a problem with the hard drive? As we know the MacBook pro will boot from an external drive...
If anyone has actually managed to read this far into this incredibly boring, waffling description of my problem, I am already grateful, and if anyone can give any help or advice at all regarding this, I will be eternally in your debt....
    Thank you

    I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2GB/120GB)
    The MacBook Pro 3,1
    So I bought a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB,Internal,7200 RPM,6.35 cm (2.5").
Right the standard hard drive (not the XT which is a hybrid and can be problematic)
a folder icon with a question mark in it flashes in the middle of the screen...
That's the firmware telling you it can't find the/a bootable OS.
The 2 original install disks for Tiger that came with the MacBook Pro
If I put in the original install disk, it starts to read it (apple logo and spinning wheel) and then eventually kernel panics
but when I select it, it spins for a bit, then kernel panics.
Your machines firmware was updated, it will only now boot from 10.6 either on a bootable USB thumb drive or via the white 10.6.3 retail disks you can get by calling Apple by phone.
This seems to be because my newish iMac/OSX wont let me boot any OSX installer CD/firewire or otherwise, other than the original operating system for the iMac.
True. If the iMac could boot from the 10.6.3 disk, then you could install 10.6.3 via Firewire Target Disk Mode onto the other Mac if for instance the Superdrive didn't work.
MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.
    True.
Just order the 10.6.3 white retail disk from Apple via phone, forget 10.4 and 10.5 as they are not getting updates anyway.
However you can extract iLife from the 10.4/10.5 machine specific disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft.

  • Duel System Adapter + MacBook Pro = Kernel Panic?

I was on set for a P2 shoot as the "P2 Dumper" a few days ago. Cards where all ranges of sizes (4GB to 32GB) offloaded to my MacBook Pro via a Duel Systems Adapter. The MBP was purchased brand new on Sunday (2.5 Ghz 15"; so 10.5.2 & QT 7.4.1 were pre-installed). I installed the Panasonic P2 Mac utilities (P2PCCard Install, P2 Formatter, etc) as well as P2CMS after I installed FCS 2 and updated to FCP 6.0.2.
Now, I'd read that the Duel System Adapter usually required a system restart before you could typically read the card. What I didn't expect was the kernel panic I kept experiencing whenever I inserted a P2 card into the adapter after a period of inactivity.
What I mean to say is, when offloading one card after another (usually in the span of 20 minutes), I never got a kernel panic. But when I had to start the process from scratch - meaning I hadn't offloaded a card in 30+ minutes - inserting a card would guarantee a kernel panic.
This is with the adapter continually plugged in. Was that my mistake? Is it required to eject the adaptor when done with a series of cards, then reinsert it (and restart) when beginning the offloading process again?
I'm guessing this is just me overlooking an understood aspect of the workflow, rather than me bumping into some brand new issue...

    Hey Hanumang,
I too am having kernel panics using the latest (Penryn, Feb refresh) Macbook Pro and a duel system adapter. My kernel panics have been occuring during ingest/export when using P2CMS. Here is my set up:
    Penryn MBP
    OSX 10.5.2
    Quicktime 7.4.5
    FCP 5.1.4
    P2CMS 1.1.9 (latest)
I have all the necessary drivers (no additional drivers are needed with Leopard and the Duel Adapter).
My kernel panics are happening when I am ingesting/exporting using P2CMS after about 1gb of transfer. Here is my exact workflow:
Shoot 720/24pn on an HVX to an 8gb card.
    Write protect 8gb card.
While off, insert Duel Adapter to MBP.
Boot MBP and insert P2 card into Duel Adapter, P2 card mounts fine.
    Launch P2CMS
Select P2 card as the source
Select all clips -> right click -> export to MBP hard drive.
After about 1gb of transfer, I get a kernel panic, 5 times out of 5.
Notes: No issues with the Duel Adapter when using a drag and drop method. No issues using above workflow using P2CMS and using the HVX and firewire to mount P2 cards. I only get kernel panics when using the Duel Adapter and P2CMS to ingest footage.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro kernel panic every time I try to work.

I updated my mid 2009 mb pro a week ago. I got new RAM and got rid of the optical drive (I'm planning on putting an ssd there). And now every time the computer has to work a little bit (youtube+illustrator for example) and the processor has to work a little harder, the computer restarts giving me a kernel panic log.

  • Late 2013 retina Macbook Pro kernel panics

Hi guys, maybe you can help me. From time to time my macbook has to restart because of kernel panics. I cannot really provoke a crash.. at first it only happened when I went to fullscreen mode in VLC. thats why I thought it might be just a bug in VLC or the graphics driver, now I'm not so sure anymore since it happened with other applications too (safari). Kernel extension in backtrace is always: com.apple.iokit.IOAcceleratorFamily2(98.22).
I did see something else, in the system logs I get this error from every application after i disconnect my thunderbolt display: 17.07.14 18:26:56,488 Console[1560]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x04249001
As long as I don't connect and disconnect it after a fresh reboot this message seems to not show...
Another thing: when I connect my display to the thunderbolt port and fiddle a little bit with it the display goes dark, if I connect it to the other port and fiddle it everything stays the same.
So long story short, might this be a hardware defect or is this a software related issue? Maybe you guys can help

  • MacBook Pro 15" ~2009-10 won't boot

Last night by MacBook Pro 15" froze and manually shut it down (holding down the power button.) Now it won't boot up. I get the Apple symbol and nothing else happens. I've tried holding the shift key and the c key and nothing happens. I have a relatively new 1T hybrid drive. I have a backup from about 1-2 weeks ago on an external drive. What can I do?

Start with SMC and PRAM resets:

    Hello.
Regular kernel panics when using Safari, Safari web content crashes incredibly regularly. I've looked at the crash logs etc and a couple of kexts keep popping up for PACE Support and Waves audio plugins. If anyone could help, that would be nice.
    Here's my EtreCheck:

  • Macbook Pro - Kernel Panic and then Hardware Error!

    Hi,
So I just went through major stress of going through my first kernel panic with my 21 month old 15" 2.2GHz MacBook Pro. The screen suddenly became pixelated and then shut down, went through the whole "You need to restart your computer..." screen a million times when I tried to restart it, but had to do a lot of force shut downs. Then I put in my Install Disc 1 and did a Hardware Test where they found the error: 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOD. After that, I restarted my computer and now everything is fine... or so it seems for the moment.
I'm just wondering, since that was the first time it happened, should I take it to the Apple store to get it checked soon, or wait? Or should I do another Hardware Test? I've checked online on that specific error and that apparently it's a temperature/fan problem with the motherboard. Any suggestions on what to do now? Thanks!

Take it in and get it looked at if you are getting that error. They may have to replace that logic board.

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Kernel Panic

Hi, I have a Mid-2010 MacBook pro (2.66 GHz Core i7) running OSX 10.6.8  that has been frequently crashing/kernel panic recently. This happens mostly when I am playing games, such as league of legends, but has also happened during times of low usage (ie simple web browsing or typing a document).
This is the error message that I recieve:

I took my computer into the Apple store, and they ran extended diagnostics on it, finding nothing. However, they told me that the problems sounded like a logic board failure, and sent it to get it repaired. They quoted me the flat-rate $310 repair fee, because I had purchased my MacBook 3 years and 2 weeks ago. Is there nothing else I can do, or should I still fight to get it repaired free of charge?
Apple says that you can only get the logic board replaced for free if your computer was purchased less than 3 years ago, so you have to pay for the logic board. However, you can consider lucky: logic boards are much more expensive than the cost of the one that Apple is going to install

  • MacBook Pro 15 '' (mid 2010) won't boot up

    Hi,
This is my first post in the Apple Foruns, been lurking for awhile, however, have never run into any problems with my MacBook Pro.
A couple of days ago, I hav had several situations where while using my Macbook, it would crash, the Beachball would come up and he would not respond to any commands, only by pressing the power button to Force Shut Down would work.
After this started happening, during a boot, I got the prohibitory sign .
After this happened, everytime I boot it up, it sometimes boots, but most of the time, it doesn't. I have tried:
    - Safeboot (Shift-Command-V -  and I do see an error 19 that mentions that the System cannot mount the drive)
    - Tried booting from my BootCamp partition, but that also does not boot, mentions that it should run the StartUp repair from Windows, but will not load.
I think this might be a faulty HDD, so in one of the times I managed to boot to OS X, I used the Disk Utility, Verified the Disk and it stops midway with an error stating that the "Volume is corrupt" and must be repaired using the Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Install DVD.
As I do not know where my Install DVD is, I tried booting in single user mode, performed a fsck, which detected some issues, repaired them (ran fsck 3 times before it gave the "Volume is ok" message) and rebooted.
Got in to OS X, ran Disk Utility again just to double check, and it gave the same "Volume is corrupt" message.
Booted to Single User mode once more, ran the fsck again, which gave the message that the "Volume is ok".
I wonder, since I carry my laptop around with me, no second skin, and have to say it has suffered some several bumps and shocks, it can be the HDD which has died?
    This was hinted by:
    - Safeboot (Shift-Command-V -  and I do see an error 19 that mentions that the System cannot mount the drive)
    - BootCamp partition also does not boot, mentions that it should run the StartUp repair from Windows, but will not load.
    - Having the Volume stated Corrupt by Disk Utility inside the OS, but having fsck stating it's ok
Now, I am confortable with buying a new HDD, install it and re-install the OS, but should I still try to format my current HDD and re-install the OS on it?
Also I do not have my Install DVD's, if I phone Apple (I'm from Portugal) will they provide Replacement DVD's?

...and the boot up media i'm using are the origianl 10.6 and 10.5 disc.
Your mid-2010 computer requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.3 to boot. Only the disc that was shipped with it contains the necessary version. A retail 10.6 disc can't boot it, and no 10.5.x disc can boot it. Use the one that was shipped with it and no other.

  • Macbook Pro died and now won't connect to the internet

I just got home from college and my Macbook Pro died while I was using it because I couldn't find the charger in time to plug it in (stupid mistake that I never ever let happen usually). After I found it, plugged it in, and started it up again, the date and time were messed up on the computer. I reset them to normal and tried to connect to the internet using my old settings, but it hasn't connected.
I've tried a lot to try and fix it so far and it still won't connect. Other computers and devices (HP and Dell laptops, iPod touches, PS3) that my family have and use all work and connect to the internet fine.
I've tried to run the Network Diagnostics and after plugging in all of my settings and information, it says that it can't fix it. Next to it on the left, the Airport, Airport Settings, and ISP are all green...but the Network Settings is yellow and the Internet and Server are red.
I've deleted my internet settings and tried recreating them and that hasn't worked either. I have also tried the Assist Me portion to make a new connection - no luck there.
I've also tried resetting the Macbook Pro and the router (an Actiontec router for Verizon FIOS) multiple times and that hasn't worked either.
I unfortunately can't use Time Machine either because I don't have an external hard-drive and haven't set it up.
I just don't really know what to do at this point. Hopefully someone can help me out!

Same problem--hoping to get Apple's attention by throwing my hat in the ring with everybody else.
Things tried (now approaching 2 weeks of failure):
    Deleting "Airport" Connection, Adding/Restarting/Re-adding/etc.
    Archive Install
Erase & Install (full reinstall done by Genius)
    Card Replacement
    Bluetooth Replacement
    Zapping the PRAM
    Trying different connections/routers/locations/connection types/etc.
Visited Genius bar 4 times now.
Have been without the computer longer than I've been with it.
Trying to change over from a horrifically bad Dell to a refurb Mac worked once before...though I've come to believe: It's not the refurb, it's not the hardware, it's not the settings, it's not the router, it's not the install, it's not the associated software, it's not the connection, it's not the Super Moon that comes up tomorrow...It's a hardware issue as this has been happening since I opened the computer out of the box, and we have an identical computer running identical programs on an identical network with the identical updates and NO problems whatsoever--I'm assuming the innards may have been cheap'ed out somewhere to save a buck or a connector is faulty after a particular build date?
Full symptom list (in no particular order):
    Connection Timeout
    Connection Drop
    Not recognizing Airport
Card Recognition but endless connection time
    IP non-recognition
    Random re-connect
Indication of connection without transmitting/receiving data
Frustrated Mac lover trying to convert a Dell user...

  • MacBook Pro kernel panic on wake from sleep

I need some advice. Over the past few days, my MacBook Pro has been experiencing kernel panics when I open the screen and it wakes from sleep. The panic is immediate; there is no lag or time between opening the computer and the initiation of the event. It appears to be intermittent however and I wanted to get some input on this before I start troubleshooting it. Perhaps I may need to have Apple take a look at the unit but I would like to solve the issue (if possible) myself.
One thing I did notice is that the kernel panics started only after I recently updated Mac OS X with the most recent Security Update 2006-003, Quicktime 7.1 and Front Row 1.2.2. Not sure if this is related however, it is interesting that the panics started almost immediately following the software update.
    Here is the panic log:

One other thing I noticed that could or could not be the problem but is sure curious is the option in the Energy Saver control pane for automaticly dimming the screen before sleep. I first noticed when I got my MacBook Pro that this option was enabled without it be marked as on. I checkmarked it then unchecked it again and the screen did not appear to dim before sleep anymore. However, since the last kernel panic on Monday, I have reenabled the option thinking it could possibly be this. It's kind of far fetched I know, but my system has been stable for past 2 days so perhaps this software flaw in the Energy Saver is the blame. Sort of makes sense since this timmer for dimming is activated before sleep of the display which might corrispond with some part of the sleep/wake system of the computer and/or Mac OS X. Later, I am going to try turning the dimmer off and cycling the computer from sleep to wake and see if I get a panic. I'll keep everyone posted as to my results.

Has anyone else here had this problem, and can anyone shed any light as to what parts are faulty and how much this could cost to repair at the apple store? thanks.
I should also say that i had the machine in at the genius bar 2 weeks ago with this problem and they did a hardware diagnostic exam and it came up with no faults and for some reason their next diagnostic test ( i dont remember what it was called) wasnt even able to start.

You have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the log is showing a problem with the NVIDIA GPU.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have a defective NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller. Print the log you copied and show it to the Genius, and also print the website I gave you in the second paragraph

  • MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz A1260 won't boot after case replaced

    Hi,
    I have a early 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz(A1260) model.
It had some blemishes on the cover for normal use and I decided to replace the bottom and back cover case.
After hours of work to put everything together just as it would be from the factory, no missing screws what not, the laptop won't boot at all.
I can hear the sound of hard disk, but the led light on the power button does not lit on nor there is anything on the LCD display. No usual boot sound.
I tried to reset the SMC by pressing power button for few seconds after removing all the power sources but nothing works.
The laptop worked until this morning without any problems.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Robert

Who replaced the case? It sounds like it is a self-inflicted hardware-related issue.
