Macbook pro keymap trouble

Hi, I've been messing with this for a while but I can't get it right
as you know, macbook pro's (and macbooks, macs,..) have their own, special keyboard layout.  I want to map the special keys to become more normal (eg right apple key or the key next to it) should become alt-gr, so that i can type | or # by using alt-gr and the appropriate number key, that i can have home and end keys by combining apples "Fn" key with left or right arrow keys, and so on.  And since I'm Belgian, I'ld prefer azerty over querty (on normal computers i use the be-latin1 keymap)
I would like to have this working in both console mode as in Xorg, so instead of twiddling to much with the XkbLayout settings which only gives results in Xorg, I'm guessing I should rather get a good keymap instead, so I can enjoy that in both worlds?
Arch includes some mac keymaps in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/mac but when I tried loadkeys mac-be it worked pretty well (I think, I don't want to try it again, read on) but outside Xorg it was a total mess: every key seemed to be mapped to something else, even keys like backspace or enter were mapped to characters like "e" etc, so I couldnt even load another keymap or shutdown the computer, I had to force shutdown (probably corrupting my filesystem).
On the this page I found another supposedley good working map (this one) but again, outside of X I got different behavior, I couldnt type characters like | or # anymore, the alt-gr key seemed to have become an enter-key, it was querty instead of azerty, ...
It would be great if anyone could help me with this

I am using a german qwertz macbook pro core duo .. keyboard map is http://cyanescent.co.uk/mac-de.txt
the best way to go is to load a similar keymap at boot, then on the console run "dumpkeys > myfile.map" and spend a while customizing the output. use "loadkeys myfile.map" to hoover your file up again. To get the AltGr keys working you need append its keycode to the third column of the base key (so in my map, AltGr 5 maps to 'bracketleft', which can be found on keycode 6); the fourth token maps to the left Apple key. I didn't manage to find maps for shift + AltGr, or Alt though...

hi I've just download os x mavericks 10.9 on my macbook pro  the trouble is when i am on the internet my screen goes of it keeps saying put in your password how can i stop this everytime the screen goes to sleep

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes.  You make it sound like it was sent to you.  At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it.  However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible.  iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer.  So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message.  One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version.  Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers.  The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

  • Why is my mid-2010 macbook pro having trouble booting and crashing?

I have a mid-2010 13 inch macbook pro that has recently began to have severe problems. It started after I shut it down one night and woke up to the sound of my mac's fans running loudly and my computer running extremely hot. Apparently, it must not have finished shutting down that night and something went wrong with it when i closed the lid. Ever since then, the computer will either take a long time to boot up (the apple symbol will take up to a minute to appear, and then up to several more minutes to go to my desktop) or it will display an error (either the folder icon appears instead of the apple logo, or the apple logo appears and then after a minute or two is replaced by the circle slash). Once i'm in, the computer seems to function normally, but anytime it needs to access the disc there might be another delay, or the computer will freeze, forcing me to shut it down again. The most common time this occurs is when I am waking the mac from sleep. In addition, the cpu would run hot (~85) which would imply i was doing high cpu activity, except i was usually doing very little, activity monitor showed low levels with sudden intense spikes whenever i did something.
I've run several diagnostics to try and determine the problem, but none identified an error:
booting computer from different computer/startup disk - runs fine (apparently. gave my mac to someone else to try this test, could not see results for myself)
Thorough Apple hardware test: no problems found
disc utility: disc/discpermissions verified and repaired with no issue.
PRAM/VRAM reset: actually sped up the lagging of the system once it reached the desktop and intense cpu thing but booting problems still persisted.
archive and install: some of the time it would fail to install in the middle of the installation, forcing me to start again, but once i completed it, issue still persisted.
clean wipe of drive with restoration from time machine: computer speed better but still trouble when booting.
Clean wipe of drive without migration of data: computer running and booting quickly, but occasionally still received circle slash instead of apple logo.
At this point, i don't know where the source of the problem lies. The computer is old, but has never had an issue until recently. The problem is inconsistent, and all testing implies it doesn't exist, which makes its diagnosis extremely difficult. As it is a 2010 mac, it is clearly out of apple care and warranty so i cant go to a genius. I have a weak battery (80%) and my screen lid is a little loose from frequent use, but those are the only blatant problems i'm aware of with my mac.
Any suggestions? I can gladly provide more info as needed.

  • MacBook Pro downloading trouble

My MacBook Pro is having trouble downloading files. The download window opens but the file disappears and I have to go into my downloads folder in order to retrieve it. This happens if I'm downloading files from anywhere, not just the internet. Today, I couldn't find the files in the download folder at all.

Can  you read the instructions in this document "Can't download Adobe store purchase" (http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cant-download-store-purchase.html) and let us know if you still have problems?

  • Retina Macbook Pro Having Trouble Connecting To Wifi?

Hi, I have a TP Link router with a 2013 2 TB time capusle connected to it.
And My macbook pro seems to be having trouble connecting to the TP Link's network, My 5GHz network on my time capusle, and my normal 2.4GHz network on my time capusle.
When I try connecting to a network it says connecting for about 30 seconds and then comes up with a exclamation mark "!" symbol.
It will randomly start connecting and working, then maybe 10,15 minutes later it drops out for a few hours again. Im not sure what's going on.
P.S Averything else will connect (Macbook air, iPhone 5s, My iMac, My iPad mini ect.
    Please Help!
    James.

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Apply and test.

  • Macbook Pro Retina trouble with projector after using Thunderbolt display

I used my macbook Pro Retina with my Thunderbolt to VGA adapter all through the fall, and never had any trouble with it. Just before Christmas I got a Thunderbolt display.
Since that time, whenever I connect the projector, I get a black screen. I can see and move the mouse, but nothing else. Other computers still work with the projector.
I'm not certain if the Thunderbolt Display has anything to do with this or not, but it's just the timing that it happened.
Grateful for anyone that can offer help!

It might be that the Thunderbolt output is set to the resolution of the Thunderbolt display, which the VGA adapter probably cannot display correctly.  You can toggle between the video display modes using Command-F1... This will toggle the output between Mirroring and Extended Desktop.  Using Command-F2 will allow you to attempt to detect displays.  It might auto reset to the correct resolution using Command-F2.  If you can get the VGA out to display using extending desktop then you can change the resolution to work properly with the VGA projector.

  • Macbook Pro Fan Trouble.

I recently sent my Macbook Pro Fans to get replaced. The problem was that my fans started to work even when the computer didn't need it. They would accelerate up to 6000 RPM and I would only be running Safari and iChat. Then the computer's fans would start to slow down and then speed back up. I sent in the computer for repair to get the fans looked at and they replaced them. Well the problem is still persisting. Should I call them about it again or is this normal? I only ask because I don't know if it is or not.

I have the same trouble with mine. I took it in for repair as it had a logic board issue, and they gave it back to me yesterday, but when I started using it, the fans ramped up to 6000rpm constantly for the entire day.
This morning I installed Fan Control to see if that would help, but it appears that Fan Control is not actually doing anything. The fans have been stuck around 4400 rpm at 35 degrees celsius even though I told Fan Control not to run at anything above 2000rpm until it gets to 40 degrees.
Is there a mysterious apple setting that says don't go above 35 degrees, or if you do ramp up the fan speed to max until it gets below it again, because according to Fan Control that is what is happening. It is not logical to be wanting to keep a powerful modern laptop at that temperature when the fan noise is so high. 45 degrees would be a fine operating temperature.
BTW, I checked the Hardware test and there is nothing to report from it.

  • Macbook Pro having trouble shutting down/waking up

Okay, just to clarify, yes my Macbook Pro is 4 years old, but I don't think I've done anything to it that would really cause this.
My problem: First, when I boot up, sometimes I get a "Please restart your computer" message as the screen turns from blue to gray. It often takes at least 2 times before I can actually log in without a problem. And recently, I've been getting that message while I'm booted up... but only a couple of times.
Then my mac has also been having trouble shutting down and waking up. When I click "shut down" it takes a good, long while for it to shut down, if it does it at all. Again, recently I've had to just hold down the power button to get it to shut off, which I'm sure isn't good for the computer. And if I shut my Macbook, as in putting down the screen, it makes that noise that happens right before the "DING" (that little shifty noise... I can't really describe it) several times while still shut. And when I go to open it up to get back to what I was doing, it won't wake up unless I press the power button, but sometimes I have to restart.
Is there something horribly wrong with my Mac or is this normal for an aged computer? And is it fixable without having to Archive and Repair (I really don't want to have to go through that again, especially now that I really need this computer)?
Thanks for your help and I'm sorry if this has been asked before or is a completely noobish question.

First question, how much free space do you have on the Hard Drive?
If less than 10 GB you're asking for trouble.
Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • New MacBook Pro has trouble reading DVD

Our new MacBook Pro will not automatically open a DVD when it is inserted. Had to go through DVD player and it said it did not recognize format. Had to manually select the app for it to play. DVD player is 5.1.1. Is this a bug? Linda

One DVD or all? Commercial DVD? One you burned? One you found lying on the street? More details would help...
Assuming you mean this occurs with multiple (all) commercial DVD movies, go to System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and set the 'When you insert a video DVD:' pop-up menu to Open DVD Player.

  • HT203171 macbook pro trackpad troubles - any other tips?

recently my trackpad started acting up: two-finger scrolling and two- and three-finger tapping are not being detected properly. i recorded some of this in a video:
    http://youtu.be/L-fWYcrmTQg
though it cannot be seen in this demo, general use of the cursor is also a little haphazard--it occasionally jumps around the screen all willy nilly, see.
i've been digging around these forums and beyond getting the trackpad replaced, i'm not having any luck finding a solution. are there any other tips?
    13" Macbook Pro 2011 with OS 10.7.2

My Macbook Pro started to experience the very same erratic behaviour. At first I noticed that it would happen if the MBP was on a flat tabletop surface. If I placed the MBP on my lap, the magic pad seemed to operate properly. It was very consistent. Since this is a capacitative surface, I tried an experiment. I placed the MBP on a tabletop surface where it's exhibited the malfunction. Then I used my other hand on the flat surface areas near the magic pad while using my right hand to manipulate the cursor. It appears that touching the casing with my other hand seemed to calm down the erratic behaviour. When I used only one hand, the erratic behaviour returned.
I'd searched several forums to no avail. No one seemed to have a solution or an explanation so I just lived with it.
However, by coincidence, I was experiencing what I believed was an unrelated issue. One of my USB ports was no longer responding to devices plugged into that port. While searching for a solution for the USB port, I stumbled across a post where the user suggested resetting the SMC. I'd never heard of that before this post. In his post, he mentioned that erratic Magic Pad behaviour could also be caused by the SMC.
    He instructed to
    1. Attach the MagSafe power cord
    2. Power off the MacBook Pro
    3. Press the L-Shift/Control/Option and Power button at the same time and hold.
    4. Release them all at the same time
    5. Then power on the MacBook Pro
Not only did my USB regain functionality, but it appears to have resolved my erratic Magic Pad behaviour. It now operates as it had done when new.
For reference, I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" with the Intel I3 processor and Lion.
I hope that helps somebody else as it did for me.

  • Macbook pro has trouble turning on when battery is fully charged

I have fixed the logic board of my MacBook Pro through Apple service care around a month ago due to liquid damage. It has been working perfectly fine until reccently it has been having problem turning on when battery is fully charged to 100%. The laptop automatically shuts down and is unable to turn on again unless I unplug the charger. It still works perfectly fine when the battery is not 100% and the battery is still able to charge properly.
I still have 90 day warranty for my service repairment but I'm currently on vaccation and will not be back on time. Wondering if anyone had the same situation or solutions to the problem! Thank!

    Thanks for the help!
I have tried SMC and it doesnt seem to respond in any way. I'm not really sure what the PRAM test is.
I've tried calling Apple in the states but it requries me to pay 49 USD in order to get a tech person to talk to me.
I'm currently in Asia and we don't have any Apple Stores, we do have Authorized dealers here but I'm not sure if they will be able so assist me without asking me for service charge. Do you happen to know if there's any contact I would be able to phone without being transfered?
By the time I get back to the states I'm going to be 2 days after the 90 days warranty (August 16th)  and I don't know if I should wait and risk it?

  • MacBook Pro Battery Trouble

I now have the third battery in my 17" Pro and it is having the same trouble as the first two; the battery bows up and expands rendering it useless. My extended warranty ran out in September but I'm really mad. This is obviously a KNOWN problem, according to the tech, so why do the customers have to pay for a crummy Sony battery AGAIN????

All batteries have a limited life span.  This is determined largely by  the amount of use it has had and how it been maintained.  If you use your MBP predominantly under battery power, it chronological life will be decreased than if you used the power adapter.
If your MBP has a user replaceable battery (reading between the lines) it seems that you are averaging a bit more than one and one half years plus for each battery.  With heavy battery use, that maynot be out of line.  If it is a built in one, then I suspect you have a valid argument.
I can't comment on what the 'tech' said to you because I was not privy to the conversation, but if you go to FINDER>HELP> MAC HELP enter 'battery' in the entry field you will find many useful suggestions for lengthening battery life.
    Ciao.

  • My Macbook Pro has trouble loading websites in Safari and Firefox.  I have already erased history. Why can this be? And what can I do about it?

I have been having trouble.  Some websites I have accessed before are not loading correctly.  Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't load. Sometimes they load, but you only see a list of links.  I am somewhat confused because I have never had any problems with my Macs before.  Why could this be? What can I do about it?
    Thank you.

  • IMac and Macbook Pro no longer connecting to the Wifi?

    Hi there,
I've been in London this weekend, only to return home to find issues connecting to my wifi. Weirdly, it's only the iMac and Macbook Pro having trouble, everything else is connecting fine e.g iPad, Phone, Android Tablet etc.
I'm getting disconnected around every 20 seconds and cannot figure it out! It's so frustrating as I'm wondering if there's been an update released for OS X that it has downloaded recently? Especially seeing that when I run windows from bootcamp on my iMac, it doesn't disconnect. And I also don't believe it's an issue with the hub.
Has anyone got any suggestions? I've tried removing the network and re-adding, help for about an hour but still not much use.
