Macbook pro late 13 frequent hard freezes with the rainbow wheel

Ive been getting this issue on my macbook quite frequently now; dont think its hardware related and occurs randomly at any time up to 3 times a day where the computer will slowly begin to freeze.
It (usually) begins by my browser not being able to access a website (just a white screen in browser section), at this point im able to alt tab between apps for some time but eventually everything will hard freeze, same with the cursor which will turn into a rainbow wheel and also eventually freeze.
Can only resolve this by power button for 6 secs (good thing it starts up in 5 seconds)
Any help?? Kind of new to macs Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) Hard Freezing & Apple Refusing Support

    Hi all,
I have tried installing Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista SP1 32-bit and 64-bit on my 15" Unibody MacBook Pro, and in all instances the machine has hard locked up / froze randomly, which can only be rectified by a hard reboot. Sometimes the machine locks up within 5 minutes of turning it on, other times it may be after an hour when browsing the Internet. Most times it will lock up when actually installing Windows - usually during the 'Expanding files..' stage.
The lockups happen even when simply running the basic Vista install with no other software, not even the BootCamp drivers. Installing the BootCamp drivers has no effect as the machine also freezes after I have installed them also.
Bizarrely, OSX works fine on the same machine. I am suspecting a hardware issue with the hard disk (bad sectors?) or SATA controller given the point that it locks up most frequently at.
I have reformatted the BootCamp partition on the machine a number of times now, and installed a fresh copy of Vista every time to no avail.
Frustrated at getting nowhere, I took my MacBook Pro into an Apple store to the Genius Bar on two occasions.
On the first occasion, the staff member dealing with me went into defensive mode as soon as I mentioned running Windows via Boot Camp. He stated that Apple do not support Windows issues and that I had to contact Microsoft. At no point did they attempt to diagnose if it was a hardware issue, despite it locking up during the Windows installation, which to me certainly points to a hardware issue.
I then called up AppleCare, spoke with level 1 and 2 technicians, but they basically told me the same thing - sorry, we don't support Windows, go and talk to Microsoft.
The second time at the Genuis Bar was a little more succesful, as I demonstrated the laptop locking up. The genius then repartitioned and reinstalled Vista on the laptop only to see it lock up 13% into expanding files. He told me that if I hadn't got a customised machine that he would swap it out straight away, however because I ordered online and specified the 2.8GHz CPU and SSD disk, I had to call AppleCare. He made a note on the incident report recommending a hardware replacement.
Today I called up AppleCare again and although the support technician was very sympathetic and helpful, after speaking to a number of departments he was unable to resolve my problem satisfactorily (i.e. repair, replacement or refund) and suggested that I write a letter of complaint to Apple Operations Europe.
He also said that my problem was down to a security update issued as a patch by Microsoft, which I can't say I agreed 100% with, but went with it. He said that Apple only support Vista in a configuration that was valid at the time of relase of the MacBook Pro's, and that they don't support Vista with any future updates! Curious about this, I installed Vista (non-SP1) and the same issue occurred.
Finally, I borrowed a friend's MacBook Pro and have been testing it side by side with mine. My friend's laptop works perfectly whereas mine locks up frequently.
Given all of the troubleshooting I have performed, including trying the same thing on an identical laptop with no adverse effects, I have come to the conclusion that this is a hardware issue, not a software incompatibility.
Despite all the above, Apple refuses to acknowledge that this might be a hardware problem. I don't care what the resolution is - repair or replacement - I just want a working laptop!
I have been an Apple convert since 2 years ago, recommending their products to friends, family and colleagues. I've never had a bad experience up until now, however this incident has certainly made me reconsider my view of the company.
Whilst browsing the Apple support forums, I came across a number of people with identical issues to those that I am experiencing, all without a solution or acknowledgement from Apple. I have included links to these discussions below in the hope that Apple might take a look and comment on them.

'To the person who still has these problems, replace your motherboard, by then I don't think it's driver issues for you anymore. I believe it might be logic board. My OLD macbook pro had a freezing problem, and i tried every possible driver, and then when I got them to fix it, they replaced the logic board and voila everything fixed. Have you gotten Apple to try and fix it?'

There are many more discussions pertaining to the same issue on the support forum.
On the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html) it states:
'Boot Camp supports the most popular 32-bit releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista. When you use either operating system on your Mac, your Windows applications will run at native speed. Windows applications have full access to multiple processors and multiple cores, accelerated 3D graphics, and high-speed connections like USB, FireWire, Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet.'
Boot Camp 2.0: Which versions of Microsoft Windows are supported?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888
You can install the following Microsoft operating systems via Boot Camp 2.0 or later.
Microsoft Windows Vista (64 bit) (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on certain Mac Pro and MacBook Pro computers
Boot Camp: Macs that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit editions are supported on certain Intel-based Macs via Boot Camp, which is included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
These Macs support 64-bit editions of Windows Vista:
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2009)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009)
Clearly my 15" MacBook Pro supports Windows Vista 64-bit, and my understanding is that Apple should have tested this configuration thoroughly as part of the hardware development QA process. In order to sell a product advertised as supporting a particular feature, surely you must support customers who run into problems using the machine for the advertised purpose?
Does anyone know the configuration of Windows Vista 64-bit running on the 15" MacBook Pro that Apple supports?
Has anyone else had luck getting support for these hard lock ups?
Sorry for the rant - I'm just not feeling the Apple love right now

hi, good to know that other people also having problems with the late 2008 MacBook Pro.
I have the following problem which is definately related to the chipset. i recently bought the P256 CMFSSD-256GBG2D and the performance on mac os x was really poor. installation took 20 minutes from an usb stick. i thought the ssd was broken, but its definately not. i removed a 2 gb ram module out of my mbp and tada the ssd runs at full speed. i also put the ssd in a friends macbook pro 4,1 with 4gb ram and "INTEL" chipset and everything worked. after testing the ssd in nearly 8 different systems, desktop computers notebooks netbooks, i definately can say, my ssd works, but not in my nice macbook pro. after opening a thread in the corsair forum, which also got me no positive feedback, i called the hotline here in germany. the guy on the phone said "i will take care of the problem", after 40 minutes on line, getting no answer, i hung up.
and to make things clear, my macbook runs fine with 4gb ram and a normal hdd on mac os x 10.5.7 and windows xp sp3.
here is the link to the corsair forum:

  • I'm getting the rainbow wheel when I try tp pen in internet page (Safari). The page half loads then appears to freeze with the rianbow wheel.  I get the same result when I try to stream a movie from NETFLIX.  Freezes up rather than plays (after loading).

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix.  The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes.  Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

My MacBook Pro Core Duo from 2006 shuts down randomly requiring frequent reboots to the point I had to abandon doing any project or anything on this MacBook Pro. Same thing occurs with the iMac dual core from 2007. MacBook battery replaced. Is it internal battery for both, new logic board required, bad hard drive, or bad RAM?
    Help.

Run an Apple Hardware Test using the original installation disk that has the AHT instructions on it.
    Try SMC and PRAM resets:

It is possible that you may need a new PRAM battery.

  • MacBook Pro attempts to power up with the lid shut

My MacBook Pro attempts to start up with the lid shut. The apple on the lid lights up and I can hear the hard drive attempt to boot up. I have recently had the logic board replaced. I have tried to put the computer to sleep before closing the lid but i still experience the same problem.
    thanks

I'd suggest taking it back to wherever you had the thing repaired and tell them what's happening. My guess is the new logic board is bad, but it could be something as simple as the flex cable for the top case being in improperly. That cable is a bit tricky to get in right, and it's easy to break the locking mechanism, otherwise I'd suggest trying to reseat it yourself. So, take it back, they will most likely do that themselves, and odds are just end up replacing the logic board again.

  • When I try to play a dvd Macbook Pro I get  a box with the message,This function is only for activated users. To activate go to Preferences and Donate" That took me to Mr. Gecko"s Facebook page wanting me to donate $1.99! Does any one know what this is? H

When I try to play a dvd on my Macbook Pro I get a box with the message " This is only for activated users. To activate go to preferences, donate" this takes me to Mr. Gecko's facebook page asking me to donate $1.99-$4.99.
Any clues on what this is, and/or how to bypass it? If I can report this to someone? Thanks

Sure sounds like malware, unles you installed something from a questionable site, then it's still malware but in a payware form as playing DVDs is free on Mac's.
Unless the DVD has software on it perhaps?
Does this work on any movie DVD or is this a special kind of DVD with software on it from someplace?

My computer is extremely slow, with the rainbow wheel appearing with every click. It is one year old, and has all the most recent updates. Why is it so painfully slow?

That sounds horrible. There are a number of reasons it could occur.
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either.  I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas?  Any better Malware/Spyware applications?

Having mail 4.5 issues- open mail and get a new features message that says in order to use the new features, I must import existing messages into the new version first in order to use mail 4.5.  Just recently put in MAC OSX 10.6.7.  Once it imports I am to click done to start using mail, but end up with the rainbow wheel of death and it also says you cannot use mail until the import is finished? Now What?

Is Mail still "spinning"?  If it's been doing that for a while, I'd kill it, using either Activity Monitor or the OS X application picker.  Then relaunch Mail and see what happens.
    Two "by the ways":
    1) Your system details mention an PPC iMac.  Since a non-Intel Mac can't run OS X 10.6, you seem to have another Mac.  You might want to consider updating your system details.
    2) You seem to have been misled by the poor labeling of the message composition fields on this forum into trying to enter your entire post into the "subject" field.  In the future, just enter a summary of your post there and the main text into the field below it.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very slow with the wheel constantly spinning.  Can anyone please help?!?!

My MacBook is running very slow and the wheel is constantly spinning.  It's not just using the internet as it takes forever to start, open programs, etc.  It is even taking me a long time to type in this question as the spinning wheel keeps coming up.  Below is the EtreCheck.   I would appreciate it if someone could please help me!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My macbook pro late 2008 randomly freeze

Hi I recently upgrade my macbook pro Late 2008 by adding a 250 go Crucial SSD drive in the main harddrive spot. I also put a 1 To HDD in the place of the super drive.
Since then, my macbook randomly freeze. I can't see any link to any specific usage. It just happen for no reasons. I had to reboot by holding the power button.

Hi r.w.p & welcome to the forums...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
    1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
    2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Macbook Pro running very slow and keep getting rainbow wheel

    Dear Friends of the Forum,
I have Macbook pro mid 2010, and I'm having some issues. The computer is running quite slow when opening any program and the rainbow wheel comes up. Further, the even when trying to click on the commands, the rainbow wheel appears again and I have had to re start the computer a couple of times.
I started the computer in safe mode and it is running a bit better, but decided to run an EtreCheck. I will share the report with the forum, as I do not have the technical knowledge to completely understand it.
I would be most appreciative if you could look at it and let me know your thoughts and recommendations.
    Best,
    OA

I see that you don't have Time Machine configured, before you do anything you need to make a full backup onto an external hard drive.
Restart while holding Command R and choose Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Run repair as many time as it takes to report that no more errors were found, it will probably take two or three attempts.

  • Macbook has become very slow, i get the rainbow wheel whenever i click on something, i can barely do anything!

My macbook pro has slowly been getting worse over the last few months, it takes ages to load up when i turn it on, and whenever i try to click on something (google chrome, itunes, etc) i get the rainbow wheel for an unknown amount of time, its so slow! i can barely do anything on it, im having to upload this question on my ipod because i cant use my mac, ive had the mac for about 4 years, and i dont think its anything to do with the memory, any help would be very grateful!

Sounds like it might be your hard drive.
Go to Applications -> Disk Utility, select your hard drive, and click on the "Info" button and see what is reported for your S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom of the screen:

  • Macbook Pro - Late 2008 - Hard-drive Noise and Freezing

I bought my Macbook Pro in the latter part of 2008 and I haven't had any problems with it until a week ago when I started hearing what I believe to be the hard drive (the lower right portion just to the right of the track pad). During this time, I could still move the cursor around but I could not click on anything and all applications opened froze. This would occur every couple of hours or so, after which I would have to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone know what could be the problem and how I can go about solving this? Thanks!!!

Lately there have been quite a few debates on the hard replacement issues with MBP's and from what I have seen they mostly are around the power consumption of the drives being not compatible..
So it's been many days now I'm recommending people this drive :
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-2-5-Inch-Internal-WD5000BEKT/dp/B003TOE4PQ
It's one of the least power hungry drives on the market and is one of the highest performers as well.
    It's 7200 rpm and a whopping 500GB for 70-80 dollars is quite interesting .
if you buy the drive and hesitate to replace don't worry it's a 5 minute super easy task and you will find plenty of help if you report back here
I hope I could be of help

  • Does anyone have a problem with upgrading Macbook Pro late 2011 hard drive to a SSD?

Hi Guys i am planning of upgrading my hard drive on my Macbook Pro 15" late 2011 for a SSD, does any one have any problems while doing this, i was told in some cases the mac loses the avility to go to sleep and etc, i would appreciate any come that you may have in this subject.
Also can any one recomend a good cheap SSD for my mac, i am looking at the crucial version, it appears to be ok.
    thanks guys

I believe they are up to 2TB in the 2.5" laptop drives.
Do a quick google on the brand & model first to see what the reviews are and failure rates.
    I use Hitachi in mine.
SSD's are also an option for you. These are much faster than the traditional mechanical drives, but also much more expensive & are much smaller in capacity.
Here is a link that gives you some idea of options.
