Macbook Pro late 2006 suddenly slow
Hello,
i'm running a 17" Macbook Pro 2.1, late 2006 with a complete fresh install of OSX10.5.8. Intel core 2 duo.
Everything is very slow. i have an older macbook pro15", and that one is alot faster.
With this 17" machine i can no longer play HD movies. also sluggish, loads of spinning wheels, slow boot, programs bouncing forever untill loading.
Also did an SMC reset, (Battery out, power button for 5sec, battery back in and power connector back in...)
not helping. As described above, a complete fresh install also did not make my machine faster.
I also swapped the RAM memory with my fast running 15", but still the 17" is slow as ****, while the 15" runs smoothly.
Now comes the completely weird part:
On bootcamp, running Windows 7 on it, everything runs smooth, even HD movies run perfectly.
Everything is fast as a charm.... but... eum... i want OSX :-(
i have completely no idea what to do anymore.
Please can anyone help me???

My MacBook Pro late 2011 has recently slowed to snails pace after successfully running Yosemite from a clean install for many months.
I always have Activity monitor running to keep an eye on memory and CPU. When the issue started, I noticed Kernel_task for the first time and its 0.5 to 1GB.
I have verified/repaired the disk and repaired permissions in Safe Mode. Also done SMC and PRAM resets.
CPU usage is usually 2% or less unless number crunching in Excel or watching videos.
I created a new user account, which is much faster in opening Safari and searching. There is no Kernel_task showing for the new user.
Cardo-updater is for a motorcycle bluetooth headset.
Xquartz is for GIMP.
Rogueamoeba is for Audio Hijack Pro.
These three have been in use since day 1 of Yosemite and before in Mavericks.
Etrecheck results
Oddities - I don't know what the disk info not mounted means. Not mounting the Recovery disk looks scary to me as uninformed.
Time machine disk too small - thought I was using a 1 TB drive !!
Problem description:
MBP late 2011 has become very slow after a few months after a Yosemite clean install. Kernel_task memory circa 1 GB. CPU activity is a few percent. Created a new user. Activity monitor does not show Kernel_task at all. Much faster as the new user. Permissions repaired in Safe mode. SMC and PRAM reset done. Short hardware test (option D on boot) - no problems. I have VirtualBox to run XP at times for some Win apps.

Scuff on MacBook Pro (Late 2006) non-glare screen
My otherwise pristine MacBook Pro (Late 2006 model, 2.33GhZ C2D) has developed a 1/4-inch scuff right in the middle of the screen. Small, but highly distracting, particularly when the area beneath it is white.
Can anyone recommend a product to minimize or buff it out? I've seen this stuff, but it's more for cleaning than removing scratches and scuffs:
http://www.klearscreen.com/searchresult.aspx?CategoryID=3
I've also seen iPod scratch removers, but they seem to buff plastic out to a glossy finish, whereas this is a non-glare surface ... sigh.
Thanks for any help!Late 2006? You do not say what graphic card.

i have an older model macbook pro late 2006, the track pad works ,the cursor works but i cannot click to any website?
khryzpher,
your model MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test comes on one of those two grey installation DVDs; it’s an essential tool for troubleshooting. You’re going to need to contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair for your MacBook Pro; be sure to have its serial number handy.
Your model MacBook Pro didn’t originally come with Snow Leopard installed at the factory. If you don’t have the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, then I’d also recommend that you purchase that, in case your hard drive fails and you’d like to install Snow Leopard onto its replacement. -
Upgrade MacBook Pro (Late 2006) 17-inch: 2.33GHz(MA611LL/A)
Hi,
I want to upgrade my Hardware on Mac book pro (Late 2006) 17-inch: 2.33GHz(MA611LL/A)
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP24
Ram: 2GB (two SO-DIMMs) on 2.33GHz configuration; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 3GB
HDD: 100GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
Can I upgrade RAM To 4GB I know that board support only 3GB but is there anyway to make it support 4GB
Is the HDD Support SATA and can I upgrade To 500 GB SATA
Thanks for HelpCan I upgrade RAM To 4GB I know that board support only 3GB but is there anyway to make it support 4GB
Short of a logicboard change, no.
Is the HDD Support SATA and can I upgrade To 500 GB SATA
Yes. In fact, the 17" model is the only one that supports also the 1 TB internal SATA before the unibody enclosures. -
Question on MacBook Pro (Late 2006) and OS X 10.5
I've owned the MacBook Pro I am currently using since April 2006. The specs for the system are as follows:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
From November 2007 until about April 2011, I had 10.5 installed on the system. I reverted back to Tiger for certain reasons until this morning. I attempted to reinstall Leopard using the same discs used when I installed it back in 2007. However, this time I was told that Leopard could not be installed. This makes no sense.
Is there a workaround to reinstall Leopard?
Thanks in advance.Makes sense if Apple updated the firmware not to boot off the 10.5 disk, your should have been able to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5.
I have had the same problem, also I've heard of others not being able to boot from their 10.5 disks anymore.
You could go to 10.6, but Apple is going to deny OS X security updates for that version when 10.8 is released this summer, so you can't win there neither.
Your machine can't run 10.7, so eithe stay on 10.4 or upgrade to 10.6 for $29, because the 10.5 disks are not sold and a fortune used. -

Having all of these apps launching at startup/login is probably slowing down your Mac's startup time AND having all of these apps running in the background is both eating yo CPU cycles and RAM.
Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
Google apps like Chrome and Drive may still not be playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks.
Until Google releases a proper fix or official update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall these Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox.
Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is ,usually, more stable on OS X Mavericks. -

MacBook Pro (late 2011) suddenly won't power up
Was working with my MacBook Pro this evening, initially on battery power. Switched to AC when the battery was at 60%. An hour later it was nearly fully charged and I closed the laptop (without shutting down) and took it with me to a restaurant. Got back to work, opened the MBP up and...no power. MagSafe light flickers faintly; no battery indicators light when I hit the battery strength button. Tried an SMC reset and a PRAM reset to no avail. All this while I'm in a foreign country doing a project with a tight deadline.
I'm going to attempt to see an Apple reseller in the morning, but does anyone have further troubleshooting or diagnostic suggestions? Thanks. The Mac Pro logic board includes a set of LEDs to help troubleshoot the
computer. The LEDs are located toward the rear of the logic board, under the memory cage, next
to PCI card slot 1. You can view these LEDs by removing the computer’s side access panel and
looking through the memory cage to the logic board below. LEDs 2, 3, 4, and 5 are normally off
and will automatically illuminate if an error occurs. To read LEDs 1, 6, 7, and 8, you must press the
DIAG_LED button, which is adjacent to the LEDs. To press the DIAG_LED button, use the nylon
probe tool.

I am currently running at a:
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM in Memory
ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB in Graphics
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) in Software
& it's a 15inch Macbook Pro incapable of upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I know i have a lot of limitations due to the age of this mac, but I would like
to know as to how far I can go with the one that I have. Please help.Your MBP will be able to use a maximum of 3 Gb RAM. The exact specifications are: 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM. Best sources are Crucial and OWC. Their websites will have the prices.
Snow Leopard is an excellent OS. I have it on my 2010 MBP and have no intention of installing Lion/Mt Lion. It is stable and efficient, more so than the newer ones. Do not view that as a handicap.
You might also consider installing a larger HDD. Your MBP can handle the largest ones available to day (1 Tb). For a pre-unibody MBP, it is a bit harder than the current crop but achievable of you have rudimentary mechanical skills and a bit of patience. See the OWC website for excellent how to do it videos.

MacBook Pro (Late 2006) freezes consistantly.
So, my macbook pro freezes ALL THE **** TIME. I want to know why, is it faulty hardware is it a software issue. It seems to mainly do it when I put the computer to work, playing games or videos. Also, when the computer gets hot I get horizontal glitchy type lines that appear, when it gets a little warmer the screen gets choppy and what not.
I am on Snow Leopard 10.6.7 everything is all updated, continually repairing disk permissions, I have a 500GB hard drive that is 50% full. I don't have the original discs to try to hardware test, I put the snow leopard disc in and ran a repair permissions and disk repair also, nothing has changed. Cleared PRAM many times does nothing at all, The RAM is well seated, everything is in order are there any logs I can put on here to help explain better?H Kuzco,
There have been a number of posts with similar issues. It's the GPU getting hot. It's very similar to the NVIDIA issue covered by this repair program:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
but you have an older Mac with the ATI X1600 GPU. If you google it, you'll find people have tried a number of different "patches" trying to keep their MBPs working (including baking the logic board in the oven, believe it or not). What most of them have in common is the focus on the solder joints. -
Using New Apple 27" LED Display with old MacBook Pro (Late 2006) 15"
I've got a MacBook Pro (Model # A1211) Core2Duo 15" 2.16 GHz with only 128 MB of VRAM and a built-in DVI port (I think it is dual-link DVI)
My question is, will the new 27" LED Display work with this machine at its best resolution? If so, what adapter would I need to get it to work?
Thanks!I don't think the Kanex adapter is the best one to purchase. The information on their website says it will only drive the 27" at 1280 x 720. Although I have not purchased one yet, the ATLONA website http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Dual-Link-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-USB-Pow ered.html, claims their Atlona AT-DP400 converter will drive the 27" at its highest resolution of 2560 x 1440. I have read confirmation from some users that this is the case for the DP400.

When I connect the 17'' Studio Display to my 15'' Macbook Pro (Late 2006)
Whenever I connect the external display to my laptop (and other laptops in the office) the laptop display remains in black on white while the external display becomes white on black. It is an immense hassle when I have to switch between monitors and applying the Ctrl+Option+Command+8 technique. HELP!
Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

Hi everyone,
I have a big problem with my MacBook Pro late 2011, suddenly while working without connecting the charger and it is 100% charged the screen would go black and I would need to hold the power button to shut it down and then power it up again, The second issue is the superdrive whenever I use a disc it spins it for 3 times before ejecting it to me, tried resetting PRAM and tried re-installing mac os x mavericks, but no solution so far and about the superdrive I bought a cleaner disc and tried to insert it, the superdrive would spin it 3 times and ejects it after that. Saw the disk permission solution and tried it once and I think there is a problem with that because this is the second time I try it and it was saying that there were problems.
Sorry for being long.
Thanks in advance.Depending on what you are doing on the computer, how hard you are working the computer, it should not overheat. And if it does it should shut down or get very slow because when it starts to overheat the CPU will be throttled back to a lower Ghz speed and or just shut down so it doesn't cause damage to the CPU. The Kernel Panics are a sign that something else is going on. This could be software or hardware.
If after wiping the drives and reinstall Lion on the SSD if the system is running OK then the drives are fine, IE they are not bad. There is something else corrupting them. Again this could be hardware or software, but I doubt it is heat. And using the MBP ion clamshell mode should not cause overheating or excessive heating of either of the drives.
Have you installed iStat Pro or Menu and kept and eye on the temps? If not install iStat Pro and keep and eye on the temps. I bet they do not get above the 150°- 180°F mark which although hot is not overheating.
Be very careful when calling Apple. Removing the DVD drive and installing a hard drive in that bay could void your warranty. The DVD is not a User Removable part and Apple frowns on doing that. So if you call them do not mention that you have replaced the DVD drive with another HDD.
Honestly I suspect you have a hardware problem. But the only way to know that is to install just Lion and your basic programs and run the system. Leave out any AV type software, if you are running some. If you don't get any kernel panics thenn install some of your other software, one programm at a time. If with just the OS and basic software you get a kernel panic then it is hardware related and needs to be checked out by Apple. If you do that re-install the DVD and the original HDD with just the OS on it before you take it in.
