Macbook pro (late 2009) freezes at desktop screen

Hi,
I have a macbook pro late 2009 model 17 inch, running Lion 10.7.3
every now and then (once per ten boots) I have a specific freezing issue, after booting and loading the desktop screen and icons, mouse cursor is moving but I can't do anything more, the only think that works is a hard reset from the power button. I tried by re-installing Lion but the problem persists. I observed that this is also usually happens when I restarting from Bootcamp (windows) to OS.
Any idea or suggestion?

See this article. You might have damaged software, and you'll have to reinstall from the recovery mode, depending on which version of OSX you have.

my macbook pro late 2009  (10.6.7) when i press the power button it turns on, then it turns off by itself and then on again and gets a black screen and nothing more no booting sound and i just hear the fans or the Hard Drive going... i really need help with this one

    Hello aB_Cepeda
For issues with your MacBook Pro not starting up, check out the articles below as they pertain to issues with start up. The big thing to look for to troubleshoot is to see if you can boot to either your Installation Disk or Recovery HD. If you can, try using Disk Utility to verify your hard drive to make sure that there are no issues. You may need to reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

  • 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2009) - nVidia 8400m stuttering graphics.

Recently, my nVidia 8400M GPU seems to have started acting up on my 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2009).  Whenever it is coming under a lot of heavy graphics i.e. games, the FPS rate begins to drop - understandibly, this is normal. However, it's predictability and duration is not.
Both under Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows (via Boot Camp) the problem occurs and will occur under any heavy graphics.  Currently, the only games I play on my MacBook are Source based (Portal 2, L4D2, Team Fortress 2) and Minecraft; all of which have the issue.
    The issue is that once the game begins, the FPS is fine, usually hovering around 24-30fps on full resolution with decent settings which is high enough for fluid gameplay.  However, 5-10 minutes into gameplay, the FPS plummets to around 12 fps in a reoccuring pattern (demonstrated as best possible below with '-' being smooth gameplay and and '.' being a 'stutter');
    ----- . . . ----- . . . ----- . . . ----- . . . ----- (and so on)
It's fairly rapid, the smooth might last for a few seconds, stutter; smooth, stutter, smooth, stutter in a rhymic predictable pattern.  At first, I attributed it to possibly a flaw in the Source code for Mac, it's still fairly new.  But then Minecraft started.  And now it occurs on Windows so it must be a hardware issue.
After maybe 10-15 minutes, it'll resume a normal FPS that's playable (or oddly, if the map is changed or refreshed on TF2, that kick starts normal FPS).  Once it's settled down, you could close the game, come back hours later and wouldn't have the issue - if you put the Mac to sleep or shutdown, it'll occur again on next boot.
Is this a common occurrence with the 8400M on MacBooks?  I used to play TF2 on Windows via Bootcamp before it was released for Mac and can never remember having this issue.
Is this something that could possibly be resolved instore?  My MacBook Pro is still under AppleCare, would it be worth them having a look at it?

You say recently.... I suspect that it has something to do with the 10.6.8 you have posted on the bottom left of your specs. I too had this very same problem and it turned out to be some apps that were not yet optimized for 10.6.8 I had to pop the install disk in and downgrade to 10.6.7... problems have disappeared since then. Good luck! Check your activity monitor and see what the CPU usage is when you boot up also check your system memory... After the update my computer the new MBP i7 2.2ghz was using 50% of the cpu at idle didn't notice it until I finally checked activity after having sluggish performance editing in aperture and restarting multiple times.

  • Macbook Pro Early 2009 Randomly Sleeps / Black Screen While In use

My macbook pro Early 2009, randomly goes to sleep while I am using the computer, I first noticed it occuring while I was using the mini display adapter to a computer monitor, and using a second monitor and watching a movie, the screen would go blank and I would have to wake it from sleep for it to come back on, sometimes closing the lid, sometimes pressing the trackpad, or keyboard to get it to work again, sometimes it would go back to sleep within 1 minute of waking.
I assume the problem could have been from perhaps water damage, as I recently used a wet paper towel to clean my keyboard, and perhaps the paper towel was a little to moist, not overly but perhaps just enough to damage the sleep sensor. I am still unsure where that is located, the only other problem I have noticed with the computer is my [battery service indicator] notification has been on for the last year, but since I never used the battery, I always have it plugged in at the desk I never bothered getting it serviced. So
I'm assuming its the Sleep Sensor? but here is what I hace done, just to make sure its not software. I was orignaly running 10.8, and after being frustrated while watching a movie and having my computer sleep every 2 minutes, I whipped my hardrive, put 10.9 developers preview on a usb and installed that.
On 10.9 I can swipe with 3 fingers on the trackpad and the display appears but if i let go of the swipe it goes back to black screen.
I can see Icons like, brightness, and sound, when adjusting the levels, but screen is black behind the icons
The mouse pointer cursor is visible but the screen is black
I can move the mouse and hear system sounds, but screen is black. Now I have to actually restart the computer because It seems like I cannot wake it up at all.
So I formatted the hardrive again and
I tried reinstalling Leopard OSX , as that was the disc that came with the mac,
but have Same problems in 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 I upgraged to developer 10.9 to see if the problem would fix, but still occurs.
I ran hardware diagnostic off the leopard disc 2, by pressing the D key on startup with disc in drive, extended hardware test reported no problems.
I SMC reset and PRAM reset,  [control]+[option]+[shift]+[powerbutton] while computer is turned off with power plugged in
and after that failed I tried pressing [Option]+[Command]+[P]+[R] before startup chime, chime repeat let go of keys and it booted normally.
Then computer randomly sleeps while in use, while using safari and it has happened 3 times within 2 minutes of typing this.
I have downloaded a program called InsomniaX, and activated the disable sleep for Lid and Idle, but now the screen will randomly just go black and then turn back on, sometimes it will just black screen for 10 seconds and come back on, altho after changing some more of the settings It appears to be not as frequent. It hasen't gone to sleep since writing this entire paragraph, so thats a good sign.
I was going to take it into the apple store, and have them run diagnostics, but I hate going into those stores because of all the iphone people, crowding the place.
Well my screen just blacked and came back within 10 seconds on while I typing this line so InsomniaX didn't work. I hope having the sleep sensor replaced isn't too expensive, or if my model even has such a sensor.
I read on another topic that this problem can be replicated by users putting a magnet on their laptop, something like an iphone or a money clip or even having one of these in their pocket while using the macbook on their lap. I have not had anything near the computer, so I have a different problem.
Just thought Id document this, will let you know what happens after the diagnostic, I tried apple support, and they said I did more than they would have done, so he couldn't really tell me anything besides take it into genius bar, (is that what its still called) and have them run diagnostic, [note its different than the hardware test on the cd]
and my computer screen goes black again, wow..

Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
    2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
    3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.

  • MacBook Pro June 2009 NVIDIA 9600 black screen of death

    Hi there,
I am thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro June 2009 with dual graphics.
    1.
As I read about the issues the MacBook Pro has in regards to graphics related to NVIDIA 9600 GT,
black screen of death, I would like to know if anything has changed regarding the NVIDIA 9600 GT
as it is still the same graphic card Apple is using for the latest MacBook Pro series.
Of course I know that Apple does not build it, however are there any informations that NVIDIA has performed changes on its graphic card that the widely discussed long term heat issues relating to the black screen of death will not appear in the latest model series?
    2.
As I mainly use PS for picture editing I also would like to know how much this will conflict with the 9600 graphic card in the long term. Are there any users with black screen of death experience that were using PS as their main picture editing software where the issue appeared?
    3.
Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
I thank you very much for all thoughts about the subject.

  • Using a macbook pro (late 2012) as primary desktop recommended?

I own a macbook pro Late 2012 edition and I am thinking about connecting it to an external monitor and using it as my primary desktop. Is this recommended? I am afraid that it will harm my macbook..especially the battery. Any insight would be appreciated.

If you use an external keyboard, USB or BT (as a desktop computer, you could use USB
and use a powered USB hub for printer, mouse, keyboard, etc and to import from devices
such as cameras, etc) and either get a stand to keep the MacBook Pro on edge out of
the way with the lid closed, or use it on a different stand to keep it up off the desk so air
can flow around it, with display lid open, for maximum cooling & extended/mirror desktop
use of the integrated display along with an external.
The battery should be used on occasion and not overly 'cycled' since it likely is one good
for up to 1,000 cycles of discharge & recharge; but never let it go completely flat or that
would damage its ability to carry a full charge. If I'm not mistaken that model is one with
    an integrated or hidden battery behind the bottom plate, so it can't be removed and run;
but then if you did remove a laptop battery, it likely would cause the processor to reduce
speed and be less than optimal specification when you needed it for higher function tasks.
There are articles in Apple Support database on how to care for a portable Mac battery
and also some may be dated in that older models are suggested to be Calibrated on
occasion and the newest batteries (such as those in Retina models) are different. If you
have a MacBook/Pro with non-Retina display, check the support articles to see if that
model, with a built-in SuperDrive, could benefit form Calibration of the battery.

It is a good idea to get a spare power adapter of the correct model for your Mac.
I see there are some that are exact replacement on occasion at OWC macsales.
While in use as a desktop replacement, the computer may work better if you use
    USB peripherals as the BlueTooth and other accessories would see less wear;
however that may be subject to a bias against using the built-in items so they
would not have a chance to wear out. Like the internal keyboard, for example.
A USB keyboard works in situations where the BlueTooth may not, and also
is easy to replace, where the built-in one is not easy, nor inexpensive.
Expect to replace the battery before the approximate cycle life is reached,
though it may be possible to exceed 1,000 cycles as noted by some who
have said they did; however you can't be sure how they arrived there. A
matter of use-patterns and careful consideration on what the portable does
in the course of a few years time could make a difference in battery life.
Yet some batteries can go bad without timely cycling and use. But do not
let the batteries go flat, recharge before they get too low so they don't see
    any damaging discharge.
With the extended AppleCare plan, an option, the battery is covered for the
total duration of the extended plan. With a built-in battery, that is a fair deal
since the replacement, when covered, includes labor. Some models were
made in such a way as to allow a careful out-of-warranty battery replacement.
Check the online sources such as iFixit to see if after AppleCare, you would
even want to try to replace the internal battery. The AppleStore Genius could
do it for a slight fee over the cost of a replacement battery at that time.
With my (now older) Apple portable computers, I use a laptop stand, USB mouse
and keyboard, powered USB hub, wireless base station with Ethernet option,
both wired and wireless printing, & do not use an external display though I could.
That said, I use a Mini (Late 2005) G4 1.5GHz most of the time. My computers
stay on most of the time, and are allowed to sleep. They have some degree of
protection from power grid ill-effects through use of a power conditioning UPS
that can automatically switch when power goes up or down, and provides some
degree of run-time when the power goes Out. Not a whole bunch, though.
With an external display, and other accessories needed to use the Mac and to
shut it down when the power goes completely out, you may need to use more
than one UPS or uninterruptible power supply, but in some cases it has been
suggested in prior manufacturer publication, to not attach the UPS (whatever
brand) so they use the same wall socket; the excess power is expected to
surge or bypass the UPS and go to the Grounding wire. Be sure there is one.
Anyway, I have a few ideas and due to a few losses from trees hitting lines,
and outages lasting more than a week, with use of 'soft-power' generators,
my experience may vary as could my advice. Plan for the worst and hope...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 17" Macbook Pro late 2011 freezing randomly

Lately my 17" Macbook Pro (October 2011) has been freezing randomly. At first I thought the cause was high-usage applications, but apparently not. It's been freezing when I read something on reddit, when I'm on Facebook, when I open Photo Booth, or (the latest freeze) when I'm typing something in Text Edit.
When it froze and refused to boot back up (it got stuck on a grey screen, and I also got a vertical lined blue screen), I took it in. The repair guys figured it was the logic board, so they replaced it and the battery too.
Now tonight I just got it back, and it froze AGAIN. I was able to boot it back up (I had to do a hard boot), and it went to the login screen fine. However, when it got to the login screen, the fans started working overtime like crazy. My computer was vibrating, I could feel it in my fingers as I typed in my login info. Once everything was loaded, the fans slowed down pretty quick, and it's as quiet as a lamb right now.
Could this be a heat issue? Or maybe something to do with the hard drive? The vents were clear when booting, I didn't think to check the air though.
It's got two months of warranty left, would they take it in? I can't forcefully make it freeze (it happens randomly), so I can't really show them any proof.

You've the issue as discussed in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 thread.
It's a problem with the way the GPU was soldered onto 15" and 17" machines. It's not everyone who suffers the same problem, but your symptoms match the same problem to a "t."
Read over some of the article and you'll see that you're not alone. Apple's 'fix' for the problem is to sell you a new logic board, but they can continue to fail one after the other. The only true 'fix' (and we'll just have to wait and see just how long these fixes work) is to have the GPU reballed onto the logic board.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2006) freezes consistantly.

So, my macbook pro freezes ALL THE **** TIME. I want to know why, is it faulty hardware is it a software issue. It seems to mainly do it when I put the computer to work, playing games or videos. Also, when the computer gets hot I get horizontal glitchy type lines that appear, when it gets a little warmer the screen gets choppy and what not.
I am on Snow Leopard 10.6.7 everything is all updated, continually repairing disk permissions, I have a 500GB hard drive that is 50% full. I don't have the original discs to try to hardware test, I put the snow leopard disc in and ran a repair permissions and disk repair also, nothing has changed. Cleared PRAM many times does nothing at all, The RAM is well seated, everything is in order are there any logs I can put on here to help explain better?

    H Kuzco,
There have been a number of posts with similar issues. It's the GPU getting hot. It's very similar to the NVIDIA issue covered by this repair program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
but you have an older Mac with the ATI X1600 GPU. If you google it, you'll find people have tried a number of different "patches" trying to keep their MBPs working (including baking the logic board in the oven, believe it or not). What most of them have in common is the focus on the solder joints.

  • Downgrade latest macbook pro late 2009 model from snow leopard to leopard?

    hi all,
I have been contemplating investing in a new macbook pro 15 for quite a few weeks so hope someone can give me a clear answer on this.
basically i have a 3ghz mac pro 8 core intel machine with lots of pro apps, logic studio (8) and FCP HD studio 2 etc running on leopard.... these were designed for that os. I do not think that if i bout a macbook pro with snow leopard installed, that these apps would work so is there a way of successfully downgrading from SL to L, i have read that you need to downgrade to atleast L 10.5.6/ 10.5.7 for the mbp to recognise the correct drivers sets etc....is that correct? is it as easy as that?
If i downgrade the most recent mbp model to leopard does anyone know if all the functions will work, trackpad gestures , port etc...I just want to have 2 identical systems at the end of the day one mac pro and one mbp with the same configs so i can take my video/audio out of the studio
I refuse to upgrade to the latest app versions for the sake of an os (which is currently buggy according to most)
my configuration for my mbp would be the 3.06Ghz processor (with the matte screen!) and 500gb 7200 8gb RAM.
Please tell me if someone has done this procedure and had their mbp working fine or any probs encountered if i was to do this!?
I would be buying the mbp brand new with no data so no need for a back up with time machine etc..i just need a clean install of L os.
    thanks in advance
    l.w

There have been several reports here from people who have downgraded mid-2009 MBPs that came with SL installed on them to Leopard. As a general matter Apple discourages this...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
...and in most cases it is impossible to directly install any older OS on a Mac than the one that was installed on it at the factory, or impossible to boot the computer if one does so by indirect means (e.g., cloning from another computer or an external hard drive). So this seems to be a special case where what is usually impossible can be done successfully, but it is probably true that no earlier version than 10.5.7, build 9J3050, will be usable. That's the build that was installed on all Mid-2009 MBPs in the early days of their production run, before the introduction of Snow Leopard. I don't know whether there is any retail Leopard installer DVD for that version or for 10.5.8; they may be available only on model-specific DVDs.

    Can anyone Help please???

Thanks for the advice!  I'll try running the diagnostics.
On the other hand I'm using 8Gb of Kingston memory (certified to work with my Mac) so I'm sure if I bring the Mac to the Apple Store with those modules they'll tell me immediately that it is the problem
Therefore I guess I have to go back to my older 4Gb modules that came with the Mac and hope until it freezes again (it's going to be a pain running with 4Gb again... hello virtual memory paging!)
Although this never happened with Lion... even with my 8Gb Kingston expansion it has always been rock solid

  • OS X 10.5.8 on Macbook Pro late 2009

    Hi there
I have a MacBook Pro, and i love it! The only thing is that it doesn't have snowleopard. I am wondering why, since my sisters MBP has got it, and we bought that a month before we bought mine. Shouldnt snowleopard be installed?

That model was originally delivered with 10.5.7(9J3050) and later with 10.6(10A432). Your's must have been in inventory for awhile. It should have come with a free SL upgrade at the time.

  • Macbook Pro late 2013 - problem with login screen resolution

    Hi,
I've got problem with login screen resolution, after upgrade to Yosemite. I use the 4rd resolution (last one) on my Mac Pro (late 2013), and after restart login screen is always on optimum mode... But it's only about the login screen.
Do you know how can I fix it? I would like to have the same resolution on every screen.
    thx in advance

I  Reformatted the CF card  on the new computer   it works fine now on the new Mac Pro
Interesting point about  the low power  of the usb ports   I had to deal with all devices ejecting them selves  when the mac pro  was idle or slept  Drobo needed a Firmware update and another drives  needed  me  to change the sleep setting  or the Mac Pro   to never and  i also  had to deploy a  script to write to each device  ever minute,   this  kind  of sold the problem  with external Hard drives.   I wonder if the lowering  power  to a CF card   can eject  it  in a manor  which would make the  computer  think it is corrupt.
I have looked at  buying a power usb Hub    but seems only one or two  of the ports are powered.
Seems to be a bit problem with the mac pro especially  as everything has to be connected externally
Will assume the Firewire Connector does not work.

  • Macbook Pro late 2009, Macbook Air late 2013, LaCie 2TB external 2.0 3.0 USB Thunderbolt

I have a late 09 Mac Book Pro and now have a Macbook Air late 2013.  I have a LaCie 2TB Rugged 2.0 3.0 USB  & Thunderbolt connection.  The Air recognizes the external drive fine but the Mac Book Pro on 2.0 USB does not.  It shows up in Disk Util on the Pro grayed out.  Any thoughts on why the Pro will not recognize the drive?  Thanks

You might want to consider pairing waaaay down on the User Login Items.
Having all of these apps launching at startup/login is probably slowing down your Mac's startup time AND having all of these apps running in the background is both eating yo CPU cycles and RAM.
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
Google apps  like Chrome and Drive may still not be playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks.
Until Google releases a proper fix or official update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall these Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox.
Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is ,usually, more stable on OS X Mavericks.

  • New hard drive for macbook pro (late 2009) anti shock or not?

I thought I read somewhere that if you replace a HD in your macbook pro, the new one should not have shock protection as it interferes with the mac's own internal shock sensor.
So I went out and bought a Seagate 7200.4 500GB drive - without the 'G' Suffix - ie the non-shock version of the drive.
I carefully opened my Macbook Pro and was surprised to see the drive in it was a Seagate with a 'G' Suffix!
Does the macbook actually have it's own separate shock sensor?
Is there any published data from apple as to what drives to use for replacement?
    Thanks!

    Shifty08:
    I can speak form experience!
I got messed up 3 times with my Mid 2009 15 inch MB Pro (Some 13 inch units also) with a Seagate 500 GB Sata // 3 gps HD right after the EFI 1.7 update. There may be issue with some other larger 3rd party HDs including WD.
This is my MB Pro present configuration:
    +MacBook Pro+
    +Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4+
    +Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo+
    +Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz+
    +Number Of Processors: 1+
    +Total Number Of Cores: 2+
    +L2 Cache: 3 MB+
    +Memory: 4 GB+
    +Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz+
    +Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B02+
    +SMC Version (system): 1.49f2+
This is my present internal HD configuration:
    ST9500420ASG:
    +Capacity: 465.76 GB+
    +Model: ST9500420ASG+
    +Revision: 0002SDM1+
The resolution to these issues is now well established and discussed on a different discussion thread.
One has to have Firmware EFI 1.6 installed to avoid the problem. If Firmware EFI 1.7 is installed--back roll it to EFI 1.6. Run the Performance update 1.0.
In order to do this you have to remove the 500 GB 3rd party HD and "back roll" to EFI 1.6 from an external HD. There is a special download for this.
If you have Apple Care or have 3 month coverage for free tech support have the Apple store do it for you. It is about a 20 min routine. Schedule this appointment with the "Genius" through the Apple care. Apple is aware of the issue though some of the Genius staff are not. There is an Apple Engineering bulletin on this. There is a *EFI 1.6 rollback.dmg* file which is on the apple site.
Once this rolled back is in effect, then re-install the 3rd party HD. Then install the Performance Upgrade 1.0--and the MB Pro will work at 1.5 GPS--but this is better than nothing and it does not seem to be an issue for this MB Pro.
Now one likely can install the larger drive in an enclosure and it may work without this modification. I have not done this so I can not confirm this.
I did install the factory supplied 250 GB Hitachi HD in an enclosure and have it working as Universal boot drive.
    See below for details.
