MacBook Pro late 2011 not switching to ATI graphics when running off mains power.

Hi there.
My MacBook Pro late 2011 doesn't appear to be switching to ATI graphics when running off mains power. It always seems to stay on the Intel adapter instead. I've checked the option in the energy saver settings and it's ticked to "Automatically switch..." and when I untick this box, it switches to ATI and stays that way even when running on battery (as expected). Either way it will not switch to ATI graphics when plugged into mains unless forced to in this way.
Any one else seen this? Very frustrating when trying to run an external monitor with the Intel adapter!
Thanks in advance.
Dan

"As a last resort I opened the bottom cover and disconnected the battery power plug (MagSafe adapter also disconnected)."
After everything was disconnected did you press the power button and walk away for 5 minutes? Try that, just had one restart after waiting for that long.

    Hey Angelo_here,
    I'd run through these steps:
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • Help! MacBook Pro Late 2011 Not Charging

My MacBook Pro Late 2011 is Not Charging. I have tried plugging it into multiple outlets and none have succeeded. He is a screenshot of my System Information>Power: http://grab.by/tkOM. I have no clue what happened. Last night we had a massive storm, but I don't believe there was any thunder or lightning. Whenever I plug the adapter into an outlet, the battery usage in the top right hand corner shows the "plugged in" icon, then it shows the "charging" icon. Then it just goes blank and back to normal. I have tried to restart it and do the SMC or whatever, but nothing seems to work. I have had this charger for a little bit over 1 year. Thanks in advance!

  • Macbook pro late 2011 Not installing Mountain Lion

How do you boot from mountain lion installaion Because now it's just opening in lion rather than on startup?

  • Macbook Pro Late 2011 not recognising Ethernet Adapter after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hi everyone
I updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (I deleted all the files and made a fresh install), but since then my Ethernet adapter stoped working! when i see the system report i find this information
i've tried reseting PRAM and others and didn't result in anything
when i go Networking Settings i don't find anything related to Ethernet Adapter

Ok. Thought I would check just in case.
We could try to remove the System Configuration which includes lots of setting files that relate to networking.
If you want to do this then go to Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences and there will be a folder at the bottom called System Configuration. If you delete this, (type in your password to confirm your sure you know what you're doing) and then you need to restart the machine.
The reason for the restart is that when your machine starts back up it looks for the system configuration and because it isn't in folder we just deleted it from, your Mac creates a new copy of it.
Give this a go and let me know.

Just noticed that I don't have any discrete GPU installed or whatever. Just the Intel HD Graphics 30000 built-in. I am safe of the GPU failures?

A GPU, like any component in a MBP is subject to failure.  So in that regard, your MBP is 'not safe'.  But I personally would not dwell on that.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

So what you want is to be able to boot from OS X and retrieve your files
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Of course if it's not booting up, it's easier to fix in place
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro?view=documents#/
...so I am trying to boot from a USB recovery drive but when I select it nothing happens it just goes to the restore options
"Recovery HD" is a partition on your boot drive which you option or commnad r key held at boot time to get into and then repair the Macintish HD partition.
If you have this on a external USB thumb drive, then that's all it is, no OS X, programs or files.
If your talking a USB external drive, it has to be a OS X bootable clone made with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and the option key held at boot time gives you that boot option.
    Most commonly used backup methods
So what your saying is you have a external clone and by holding the option key down at boot all you get is it directly going to Recovery HD?
There is no Startup Manager option to choose what to boot from?
This could mean Apple changed something, or your external bootable clone isn't one, or the wrong software used so it's not being recognized by Startup Manager as a bootable option.
What did you use to make the external OS X USB bootable drive?

  • MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion freezes on wake up

    Hi,
My MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion (up to date) 1 week old freezes on wake up.
Plugged on power or not, same issues.
    No apps running.
When it goes to sleep itself i wake it up it freezes for few seconds
When i put it to sleep mode same issue.
    With the lid same issue...
I already try setting up the sleep mode from 3 to 0 with terminal command it didn't work.
Can it be an hardware issue ?
    Any ideas ?

Dear TheSmokeMonster, Dear all MacBook pro 13'' late 2011 users,
    Here is the update.
As TheSmokeMonster mentionned (above) they asked me to reinstall MAC OSX Lion by shutting down the computer and holding cmd + R while switching it off. Then you choose the language and you are good to go for a looooonngg 4GB download (it took me 8hours yeah chinese ADSL :-/ )
Lion reinstalled itself automatically and restarted. - it did not solve the issue.
I called Apple Care again and we try to run the hardware diagnostic by restarting the computer and holding D. FYI do not try it as this command does not work on the new version of macbook pro.
Here is the intersting part! As the Apple Care already did everything they could to help me. We booked an appointment the my local Apple Store in Shanghai (a real one )
The Genius remake again the SMC and PRAM reset - same issues and he also tried to boot Lion from his own external hard drive - Same issues. So we started to think that it was a Hardware problem.
We tried another MBP 13'' late 2011 (last hardware update) in the shop to see if it works properly and it DOESN'T!
Yeah you heard me. I have been trying more than 10 MBP 13'' (2.4Ghz 4GB and 2.8Ghz 4GB) put them asleep and they all freeze on wake up!! it also does it on Mac book air 13'' it seems to be a global issue on all the new 13'' machines. A compatibility problem between Lion and the new hardware architecture of the 13'' ? just my guess.
Anyway FYI this issue doesn't occur on MBP 15 and 17"
I was just amazed by this global problem so was the genuis. We could not find any solutions cause even a replacement one will have the same problem. They told me i could change for a 15" but i had to go back to the Apple shop where i bought it which is 2000Kms away not really convenient So i file the cas and i took my MBP 13'' back with me.
They will contact me later for further explanation.
    To be continued.

  • Macbook Pro Late 2011 Grey screen

    Hi pals,
I have a Macbook Pro Late 2011 since 2012. I've upgraded it to Yosemite, thing that I've to do from scratch because it worked very slow, but that's not the deal here.
The other day I started it, and it simply didn't do it. I've tried everything, like Unique user mode, safe mode, starting from dvd, reseting PMU-PRAM-NVRAM, changing hard disk, changing RAM,... everything I've found in the internet.
Only one thing worked once, and I say once, because it only worked once... I switch the HD and I used an USB to install Yosemite from scratch. It worked but when I reseted it, it never came alive again... That time, I used Disk Utility on Yosemite to format the original hard disk (700GB 7200rpm), and I recovered my personal data.
Now, when I try to start it from USB to install or from HD it never works. It shows the progress bar till 1/3 and then the screen becomes grey, the CPU heats and the fans start to spin like crazy. Sometimes it turns off, sometimes it doesn't and I have to do it.
Any help will be welcome, thank you .

The colored lines  seem like it's a hardware graphics problem, likely brought on by the EFI firmware update that's been going around lately that exposed problems your hardware had you didn't know about.
Your  going to have to bring this problem to Apple, I hope you have AppleCare because it's looking like a replacement logicboard and they are not cheap.
You can try exhausting the remedies in my User Tip, but those mostly deal with issues from the gray screen onwards, the colored lines represent a firmware issue and Apple doesn't release the newest versions online for self reinstall until they have proven themselves.
If your worried about sensitive data, you can order a tool kit from OtherWorld Computing, open the machine and remove the hard drive and use a SATA to USB connector to another Mac to remove data and scrub free space in Disk Utility.

    Hello all,
i am using a macbook pro late 2011,
I have just purchase a new monitor of eizo2736w.
After asking eizo support, they said their monitor can support to 2560x1440@60hertz.
I wonder if it is my macbook pro problem, while it can only output to 2560x1440@30hertz..
I have no problem in running 1920x1080@60hertz...
Can anyone please tell me if the macbook pro with AMD Radeon HD 6750m can support to 2560x1440@60hertz?
    thanks.

Hi, I have the same MB as yours and I also have the mini displayport dual link. When I switch from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440 I could not tell the difference. Is yours noticeably different when you switch your resolution?
