MacBook pro + leopard - can't believe apple wrote this software

20 odd years banging the drum for all things apple then this.
thought I'd chuck leopard on my macbook pro (2gig Ram 2.16Ghz with rev B motherboard fix)
started from the dvd ok, so far so good, few clicks later choose the HD and off it went - briefly
"installation has failed please restart and try again"
ok, few minutes later, back to choosing my HD and lo and behold a wee yellow triangle - "you must first reformat this volume" wasn't expecting that. Why??
Mnh, ok, I'll stick to 10.4 for now... oh no you won't, restart (without the dvd in) gets 10 secs into the restart and shuts down automatically. Eh?? press the power button, it chimes happily, 10 secs later (just after the grey screen/logo has appeared) shuts down again
so I shove the dvd back in restart from it and back to the installer and reformat
its was tickety boo 10 minutes before I threatened it with leopard. Never ever had to reformat as part of an OS upgrade before, luckily, for once I had backed it all up onto an external
so back into the leopard installer, format HD, gets 3 mins in, "installation has failed because some folder or other could not be created restart and try again"
which I do - few times each time different errors, I checksummed the dvd, even sta and let the installer check the dvd prior to installation all seems ok
whats going on for fecks sake?? this is an apple OS upgrade, not some dodgy other OS
anyone else (and I think I know the answer already) having/had similar issue. is it a pandemic or just particular machines configurations

Hi all,
I want to repost this comment I made on another thread about Time Machine;
Hi,
After reading through this tale of woe I must say it is so frustrating when a machine doesn't work as expected.
I really think that it was a mistake for there to be an update option on the Leopard install disk. I feel it will be a rare circumstance that a system will be in good enough shape for that update to work well. Just think of what the installer has to do. It goes through every inch of tiger and changes what it needs t to make it leopard. How many possibilities are there for something to be missed? I am sure it is thousands. I did the update and my very fast 2.4 CD Macbook pro turned to molasses. Time machine worked sort of as long as you didn't do anything else with the machine.
I realized then that the update was not the way to go.
I would suggest everyone having trouble with any part of Leopard, by trouble I mean really non functioning parts not just an occasional glitch in graphics or mail doing something weird, Should back up just your data the best way you can and do an erase and install. I know this means finding all of the install disks of .dmg files but think of the time you are spending being frustrated with a broken computer. You know that after a clean install you will be functioning at least. There will be bugs. This is a .0 release. Those of us brave enough to try it have to deal with the issues. I agree there should be a bit more info from Apple about the potential snags but i seriously doubt that they can second guess all of them. I do believe that the update method was misleading.
I have been using Leopard a lot and I find it very functional. Lots of great innovations. Just give it time.

  • I have a Java/CVE-2010-94 virus on my macbook pro. Can Someone help me fix this?

I used Virus Barrier Express that I downloaded from the App Store and it found a virus named Java/CVE-2010-94. I ran Virus Barrier Express again after I prssed the "fixed it" button; however, i'm not sure if this virus or any other virus is still on my MacBook Pro. Can someone please help me know if i'm safe to use my Mac?
*The first sign of any type of virus was when I was on a website and my screen froze. I couldn't move anything or press anything. Something popped up and told me to turn off the Mac. I had no choice and I did turn it off. I used my Virus Barrier Express to scan any viruses, but nothing appeared. It only appeared after I downloaded new updates yesterday.
*I just did some research and it turned out to be a "kernel Panic". http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 I haven't encountered another one ever since so does that mean my Mac is safe now?

    Steven --
Get rid of the VirusBarrier Express.  At this time, there are no Mac viruses.  All you're doing with that thing is slowing down your Mac.  Look in your VBE folder, to see if there's an UNinstaller.  I don't know why Apple is making these things available.  They're garbage, 98% of them.  Two good ones are ClamXav and Sophos.  But still, IMHO, they are unnecessary.
Kernel Panics, on the other hand, are serious.  If you don't have any more of them, that's good.  If you have any more of them, come back and post your Panic report here.
Here's info on this virus, which should affect only PCs.

I got my Macbook Pro from another user (different apple id) and now i'm not able to update iPhoto and iMovie. What can i do?

You need to contact Apple and transfer that computer, the serial number, into your name and your Apple ID. Then you should be able to update the included Apple Apps from the App store. No need to Re-buy them again.
    Caveat to the above.
If your Mac did not originally come with Lion Preinstalled, early releases of early 2011 models and older, and originally had Snow Leopard installed the original owner should of supplied the Mac OS X System Discs with the system. If that person didn't you should order them from Apple at a small fee, and don't lose them.

  • 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) Hard Freezing & Apple Refusing Support

    Hi all,
I have tried installing Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista SP1 32-bit and 64-bit on my 15" Unibody MacBook Pro, and in all instances the machine has hard locked up / froze randomly, which can only be rectified by a hard reboot. Sometimes the machine locks up within 5 minutes of turning it on, other times it may be after an hour when browsing the Internet. Most times it will lock up when actually installing Windows - usually during the 'Expanding files..' stage.
The lockups happen even when simply running the basic Vista install with no other software, not even the BootCamp drivers. Installing the BootCamp drivers has no effect as the machine also freezes after I have installed them also.
Bizarrely, OSX works fine on the same machine. I am suspecting a hardware issue with the hard disk (bad sectors?) or SATA controller given the point that it locks up most frequently at.
I have reformatted the BootCamp partition on the machine a number of times now, and installed a fresh copy of Vista every time to no avail.
Frustrated at getting nowhere, I took my MacBook Pro into an Apple store to the Genius Bar on two occasions.
On the first occasion, the staff member dealing with me went into defensive mode as soon as I mentioned running Windows via Boot Camp. He stated that Apple do not support Windows issues and that I had to contact Microsoft. At no point did they attempt to diagnose if it was a hardware issue, despite it locking up during the Windows installation, which to me certainly points to a hardware issue.
I then called up AppleCare, spoke with level 1 and 2 technicians, but they basically told me the same thing - sorry, we don't support Windows, go and talk to Microsoft.
The second time at the Genuis Bar was a little more succesful, as I demonstrated the laptop locking up. The genius then repartitioned and reinstalled Vista on the laptop only to see it lock up 13% into expanding files. He told me that if I hadn't got a customised machine that he would swap it out straight away, however because I ordered online and specified the 2.8GHz CPU and SSD disk, I had to call AppleCare. He made a note on the incident report recommending a hardware replacement.
Today I called up AppleCare again and although the support technician was very sympathetic and helpful, after speaking to a number of departments he was unable to resolve my problem satisfactorily (i.e. repair, replacement or refund) and suggested that I write a letter of complaint to Apple Operations Europe.
He also said that my problem was down to a security update issued as a patch by Microsoft, which I can't say I agreed 100% with, but went with it. He said that Apple only support Vista in a configuration that was valid at the time of relase of the MacBook Pro's, and that they don't support Vista with any future updates! Curious about this, I installed Vista (non-SP1) and the same issue occurred.
Finally, I borrowed a friend's MacBook Pro and have been testing it side by side with mine. My friend's laptop works perfectly whereas mine locks up frequently.
Given all of the troubleshooting I have performed, including trying the same thing on an identical laptop with no adverse effects, I have come to the conclusion that this is a hardware issue, not a software incompatibility.
Despite all the above, Apple refuses to acknowledge that this might be a hardware problem. I don't care what the resolution is - repair or replacement - I just want a working laptop!
I have been an Apple convert since 2 years ago, recommending their products to friends, family and colleagues. I've never had a bad experience up until now, however this incident has certainly made me reconsider my view of the company.
Whilst browsing the Apple support forums, I came across a number of people with identical issues to those that I am experiencing, all without a solution or acknowledgement from Apple. I have included links to these discussions below in the hope that Apple might take a look and comment on them.

There are many more discussions pertaining to the same issue on the support forum.
On the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html) it states:
'Boot Camp supports the most popular 32-bit releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista. When you use either operating system on your Mac, your Windows applications will run at native speed. Windows applications have full access to multiple processors and multiple cores, accelerated 3D graphics, and high-speed connections like USB, FireWire, Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet.'
Boot Camp 2.0: Which versions of Microsoft Windows are supported?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888
You can install the following Microsoft operating systems via Boot Camp 2.0 or later.
Microsoft Windows Vista (64 bit) (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on certain Mac Pro and MacBook Pro computers
Boot Camp: Macs that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit editions are supported on certain Intel-based Macs via Boot Camp, which is included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
These Macs support 64-bit editions of Windows Vista:
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2009)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009)
Clearly my 15" MacBook Pro supports Windows Vista 64-bit, and my understanding is that Apple should have tested this configuration thoroughly as part of the hardware development QA process. In order to sell a product advertised as supporting a particular feature, surely you must support customers who run into problems using the machine for the advertised purpose?
Does anyone know the configuration of Windows Vista 64-bit running on the 15" MacBook Pro that Apple supports?
Has anyone else had luck getting support for these hard lock ups?
Sorry for the rant - I'm just not feeling the Apple love right now

hi, good to know that other people also having problems with the late 2008 MacBook Pro.
I have the following problem which is definately related to the chipset. i recently bought the P256 CMFSSD-256GBG2D and the performance on mac os x was really poor. installation took 20 minutes from an usb stick. i thought the ssd was broken, but its definately not. i removed a 2 gb ram module out of my mbp and tada the ssd runs at full speed. i also put the ssd in a friends macbook pro 4,1 with 4gb ram and "INTEL" chipset and everything worked. after testing the ssd in nearly 8 different systems, desktop computers notebooks netbooks, i definately can say, my ssd works, but not in my nice macbook pro. after opening a thread in the corsair forum, which also got me no positive feedback, i called the hotline here in germany. the guy on the phone said "i will take care of the problem", after 40 minutes on line, getting no answer, i hung up.
and to make things clear, my macbook runs fine with 4gb ram and a normal hdd on mac os x 10.5.7 and windows xp sp3.

  • Download speed higher with MacBook (tiger) than with MacBook Pro (Leopard)

I am using a MacBook 2GHz intelcore Duo (with Tiger) and a MacBook Pro 2,16GHz (with Leopard), both with an Airport Extreme connected to an 20Mb/s internet. The Airport is placed in a room, the workplace in another room (distance 12m).
Close to the Airport, a speedtest gives for boths computers +/- 19Mb/s. On the workplace the speedtest gives 19Mb/s for the MacBook-Tiger and ...... 6Mb/s for the MacBook Pro-Leopard. On both the signal strengthmeter is on maximum. Still I can only conclude that there are 2 possible culprits: the antenna or the OS.
Does anyone have another explanation or, better, a solution to offer.?

On my quad G5, on the space designer tests going from L7 to L8 on 10.4 lost about 25% of available plugins. Going to 10.5 on L8 (I haven't checked L7 on 10.5 yet) that drop went up to about 50%. On the sculpture test, it only lost one plugin each step of the way.
I'll post complete numbers when I'm done testing. I'm very curious how intel boxes compare (I'll probably test my intel mini over the weekend). I also wonder if it's a case of L8 doing poorly with songs created in L7, I may create the same songs from scratch in L8 and see if that improves anything.
While benchmarking apps are interesting, they don't necessarily reflect how real apps run. It looks like xbench isn't 64 bit or even multicore aware, making it of limited use. There's another benchmarking app called geekbench if you want to check out an alternative.

The issue has nothing to do with your MacBook Pro. You are using a different version of OS X.
If you are using Apple's Mail application, it will search both previous contacts and the address book as you type the send address.
