Macbook Pro Leopard Install Issues - Will not start

Ok, so I bought a used Macbook Pro about 9 months ago. As soon as Leopard came out, I upgraded. It ran flawlessly until about 2 months ago. I kept getting random freezes, "ATSServer" errors, and a bunch of other random problems. I decided a fresh install was definitely the way to go.
So I backed all my stuff up and erased the drive (no zero out). Naturally, I installed Leopard on a OS X Extended Journal format. When the installation was finished and the computer restarted, it sat at the boot screen (the grey Apple logo with the spinning thing underneath it). Instead of booting, it just restarted and did the same thing again. It continued to do this and was clearly not going to boot into Leopard.
I tried installing again under the same format (OS X Extended Journaled). It did the same thing.
So I tried to install Leopard on a OS X Extended Journaled Case-Sensitive partition. It installed, and what do you know? The computer booted up fine. I updated everything with System Update and everything worked flawlessly. But then I tried to install Adobe Creative Suite and realized that it (along with other programs I need for work) CANNOT be installed on a case-sensitive drive...
So I erased again and tried installing on a Journaled drive (non-case sensitive)... it did the same thing as before. Kept restarting at the boot screen and continued this in a never ended cycle.. would not boot.
So I tried a Mac OS X Extended partition (non-journal and non-case sensitive). Leopard installed and this time it got past the boot screen. Went to a blue screen... then got hung up on a blank grey screen!
So basically:
OS X Extended Journaled: Restarts continually and will not get past boot screen.
OS X Extended Journaled Case-Sensitive: Works perfectly! But cannot install my most necessary Applications on this format.
OS X Extended: Gets past boot screen but stuck at a grey screen right before OS X actually boots.
As I said, I haven't tried installing on a zeroed out drive yet (it is zeroing out the drive right now), but do you think this could even have anything to do with the problems I'm having?
It just doesn't make any sense to me... Why the **** would it work on case sensitive, but nothing else? Hard drive problem? I thought it was the logic board, but it ran absolutely PERFECTLY when on a case sensitive format.
It is out of warranty, and even if I did have AppleCare, I NEED this computer for work. I CANNOT afford to send this in anywhere to get repaired.. and I really cannot see it being a hardware issue because like I said, it works PERFECTLY on a case sensitive partition, but will not boot on a Journaled or plain Extended partition.
I'm crossing my fingers that zeroing it out will work, but ***?
Thanks.

Did you get the disks the machine shipped with? If not, call 800-MY-APPLE and order replacement disks. Should be available for a nominal S&H charge. If so, boot with the one containing the Apple Hardware Test suite and run the extended tests. If it passes, download Rember and run its tests. If the machine passes, then you've probably ruled out any hardware issues. After the disk is zeroed out, try installing, only selecting the Mac OS Extended format and ensure that you choose the GUID partition map scheme. Journaling can be turned on and off with Disk Utility, so you don't need it for preparing the HD. BTW, the Erase & Install will automatically erase the HD (just deletes the directory) and turn on journaling.

    Try this:
    1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    Disable any extensions.
Restart Safari and test. If that doesn't work, try this:
    2. Create a new location and renew the DHCP lease. See here for the procedure:

dunno, Lynn--maybe Etrecheck. trying running disk utility to verify the status of your hard drive. That may give you a basic idea. Perhaps tech tool pro.  As for it running hot, I can't say for sure. try shutting it down and using a vacuum clearner +crevice tool around the back of it.  It's been my experience that hard drives usually fail without a lot of warning, luckily you have a backup. Afterwards you can say "Yup, that went bad".  I've done a little research and found out that your MacBook Pro doesn't come with a conventional hard drive as such, but an SSD (solid state device) . It's upgradeable (up to 1 TB ) but not cheaply
go here for more info (OWC) :http://eshop.macsales.com. For right now, I'd recommend resetting the SMC/PMU, maybe zapping the pram . to do that, reboot, hold down Apple+Option, P+R keys while rebooting. Hold down for 3 chimes, let go and let it boot. as for the SMC thing....
I'm assuming your battery isn't removeable-shut down computer, plug in MagSafe cable . On built in keyboard, on left side, press Shift-Control-Option and power button at the same time.  release all the keys and the power button. press power button again to turn on computer
    that is all

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • Macbook Pro intel core duo, will not boot to anything.

Greetings, I am currently having issues with my MacBook Pro.  I get the flashing folder with the ?, but I can't boot to any of the startup utilities.  I have tried all that I have read about on other posts, such as, trying to boot with the C key held down (it just gets to the folder ?), booting to disk utility didn't work ( held down keys and it went to the folder ?), I also tried getting to the hardware test, by holding D and having the applications disk in.  And still everything I try gets me to the flashing folder ?.  Also I do have the CD's that came with the laptop and tried to install from the mas os install CD and still get to the flashing folder ?.  The reason it started doing this was because of this......  I had boot camp installed and was running dual boot with windows 7, then I had deleted the mac osx on the drive so I would only be using windows 7.  I wanted to reformat the drive after this, but had a hard time finding out a way to actually do this, as the MacBook unlike PC's, doesn't have any BIOS, and at that time didn't know all the key commands to use at startup.  So I downloaded a program from the net that can run at windows start and delete the HD before the computer fully boots windows 7.  So after I deleted the HD I could not install any program or start any of the mac utilities at startup, and I did the PRAM reset, still everything that I try it gets me to the flashing folder ?, in the end.  Could I have deleted all of the startup utilities when I wiped the HD?  If so how can I get these back on my MacBook pro if I can't get the MacBook pro to read any files or start up utilities?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I found a way to download firmware, I thought that it could be the reason I get the flashing folder with ?, because maybe I somehow damaged the firmware on my computer when I did the reformat.  Alas I followed the directions to re-install the firmware and still I get to the same flashing folder.  I used FirmwareRestorationCD1.4  I think it is the one I needed for my model, MacBook Pro 15"  intel core 2 duo, and comes with osx 10.5 leopard I think, the OSX CD is stamped 2008 for 15" MacBook Pro.  I can't check the properties of my MacBook because it has no programs on it, but this is what I think it is from memory and deduction.  Well now I guess I have to ask the question, is the firmware the programs installed such as disk utility, and recovery mode?  I need to read more I guess, and also I thought I needed to take the 1.4 off the end of the FirmwareRestorationCD in order for it to work, but the instructions for making and using the firmware CD is a bit vague.  Another factor in this to make things more difficult, is that this computer is my second computer and it's a PC laptop, so I used a program download from the net to write .dmg files to disk, it's called Transmac, could this be another fault in my creation of the CD?  I am out of ideas again as to what I need to do to get mac OSX back on my computer,  I am still a bit new to the way macs work, so I could definatley use some advice.  thanks.

  • Oracle 10G Non-Network install - OEM will not start when on the LAN.

    Greetings,
Got through a non-networked 10G Enterprise installation OK; I chose to create the orcl schema, connected to it through various utilities, added new tablespace, and all was well. I also checked my Host Name by pinging it in DOS, it showed me the IP address of the MS loopback adapter which is what I was expecting.
Once I connected the same machine to the LAN (and internet) and re-booted, for some reason the Host Name was now assigned the dynamic IP address of the LAN and not LAN2 (which is the loopback adapter that is assigned a static local IP address). It did this even though I had already added an entry in the /etc/hosts file that explicitly assigns a static IP address to the Host Name (as recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions). I also could not get the OEM to launch a webpage, run and connect to the orcl database after the re-boot; I am wondering if this is related to the IP address assigned to Host Name changing; maybe the Oracle agent can no longer resolve the URL for some reason?
In the end I find that the only way to insure I can have a working Oracle environment and be on an active network at the same time, is to bring up the Oracle environment on a standalone system first, and once Oracle is running connect the system to the network. Is there no way to automate this process?
The format of the hosts file entry recommended by the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions is as follows:
    ===========================================================
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
    where:
IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered for the loopback adapter.
hostname is the name of the computer.
domainname is the name of the domain.
    For example:
    10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
    ==========================================================
In my case since I am not part of a Windows domain (but am part of a Windows Workgroup), I added an entry in the /etc/host file that looks like the following:
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    # For example:
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.110.250 IBM-6AB1330E158
==> Note that I did not add the domain name to the entry I created since I am not part of a domain, I also used the format I found in the etc/hosts file which is:
    IP_address hostname.domainname
    - not -
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
Which is the format recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions; this does leave me wondering which format is correct...
Thanks in Advance for any help,
    ADG13

I have not. I am hoping someone (maybe even from Oracle support) will step up and officially tell us we are either right or wrong in the way we are approaching this. From the research I have done on the internet it sounds like this should work, you should be able to have Oracle starting and running fine whether you boot connected to the LAN or not, assuming you have created the MS loopback adapter, assigned it a static IP, and changed the hostname entry in etc/hosts file as part of the 10G WinXP recommended pre-installation instructions.
And yet I find I have to start Oracle when I am not connected to the LAN or the services will not start correctly. If this is a "feature" then hopefully someone will tell us and maybe give us a workaround or give us an idea if this will be addressed in a future release. Having said that and in fairness to the Oracle product; being a developer I have other products installed on my machine that have special networking setup needs also, and in my case this could be exasperating or even possibly causing this Oracle problem I am having. To be specific I have software for 2 different VPNs installed so I can tunnel into 2 private networks. One of these VPNs require me to make use of a DNS Suffix (as shown below) which might be contributing to my problems, not sure. I also have VMWare installed which uses it own network adapters when it is running, so you can see how things could get a little hairy... at any rate, there is my 2 cents worth (or is that 5 cents? : )

after restoring backup on new macbook with time machine Firefox will n to start. It says it is missing profile although profile exists and profile manager will not start. Also reinstalling does not help. Direct after starting Firefox it says profile is missing and then quits Firefox. Please help edit

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

After a powerloss and reboot the unit will not start NCS. The running configuration file apears to be intact. Any suggestions would be apreciated. Currently generation failure logs.
    Thanks in advance
    John D.

    Hi John:
Power cycling a 5508 wireless LAN controller shouldn't have any impact on NCS.  The best source of accurate information will be the logs.zip file that would come from running the command
    backup-logs 06282013 repository
That's going to cause all the logs for NCS to be backed and zipped up, and the copy put over on the repository.  Once you have that, you can unzip it, and the place to start would be the hm-0-0.log file.  That's the log of the Health Monitor service that watches over everything and tells the other services like the database, FTP/TFTP servers and such to kick off, and logs what those services do when told to kick off.  Based on which service isn't behaving, you'd check the log for that service for more details of why that service isn't behaving.

  • MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2013) will not install Windows 8.1 Pro under Boot Camp?

Have spent many hours trying to sort this out. I was told this morning in the end by a 'Senior Advisor' @ Apple that Boot Camp does not support Windows 8.1 Pro so effectively it seems like my only option for a new machine purchased earlier in the week is to return for a refund.
This despite the Apple Spec saying "
Windows 8: Windows 8 or 8.1, Windows 8 or 8.1 Pro (Boot Camp 5 only)"
The subject has been aired in thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5474320?start=585&tstart=0 but it has been suggested I post a fresh thread.
I have purchased a new 8.1 Pro license, so this is not an upgrade. I have followed the Boot Camp instructions, including getting the update for this model spcifically, but the nearest I got to a successful install returns soemthing of the like 'Unable to update boot settings' or the like and installation cancels. My machine is a mess I guess now, but in a final effort - does anyone have the step by step 'idiots guide' to working through the setup successfully? I don't want to get involved in massses of messing around with files as this should clearly not be necessary for achieving an advertised solution on a new machine bought within the last week should it?
Appreciate any help - I have up to seven more days left in my option to return for a full refund..... and maybe buy a Dell instead?
PS : We have many Apple products, Air, ipads and iphones so would dearly like to sort this out if possible.
    Thanks for any help...

8/8.1 will install fine but there's some stuff you need to do before starting to ensure no issues
    purchase a retail 8/8.1 license
use only a USB2 flash drive
    get a clean 8 or 8.1 ISO
newer machines are more selective with the ISO for some reason (ISOs that worked to install Windows on many different older Macs would not work)
if you've made lots of changes, hacks and adjustments trying to get this work on your own, you should clean install OSX first, do not restore from time machine and start at step 3 to get Windows installed, you can go back later and copy files back to OSX
if you want to try without clean installing OSX, here goes
open boot camp assistant (bca) and choose option 3 ONLY if it reads 'remove/delete' Windows
open disk utility (du) and confirm that your HD now only has 1 single partition ('macintosh HD' unless you've renamed it)
restart machine and do a PRAM reset
open du and repair permissions TWICE
open bca and choose all 3 options (create, download, install)
from here, the process follows the standard boot camp instructions (http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf) but pay attention to step 3 where you do have to manually reformat the boot camp partition
    clean ISOs

    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-8-1-download/
if you are trying to clean install 8.1, google clean install 8.1 with windows 8 key for steps like this
