MacBook Pro-Leopard won't load - HD reads okay-URGENT WORK!

HELP!  MacBook Pro Core Duo shows apple and spinning ball at start up- did the usual (safe mode, reset smu, boot from install disk- and was able to verify hd) went to Genius Bar, guy there tested it said HD was fine probably a software problem, suggested archive and reinstall. Had been having some freezes, some errors (e.g., trying to use Time MAchine but failed) that pointed to needing to reinstall OS.   Tried to archive and install that but finally got message that it failed - BUT used 11 of the 20 GIGs or so remaining in doing so, so can't even try again.  I have a back up from about a week ago (just copied home folders to external drive when I couldn't use time machine, have a bootable clone as well from some time ago so could reintall the clone and add back the home folders I guess) but I have some work done in the last week that I do need quite urgently if there is any way I can get in and grab the files.  I have at my disposal a slightly earlier MacBook Pro running Tiger and a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.
Suggestions?  Don't want to mess up anything. A few months out of Apple Care, too. Anyone up?
Thanks,
Annexit
btw, can't figure out updated Apple Support Communities - used to be able to find the group I needed, so sorry if this is in the wrong place

Sorry, A Brody for violating protocol - will do as you ask in future. I was getting anxious that no one was responding so cross posted. I have been spoiled in previous years with lots of people up all night responding (including you who has helped me over the years) and was feeling desperate!
The saga continuea. Worked for a little from the backup bootable drive as above but that started crashing.Went to Apple Store, Genius Bar guy said everything tested out fine on hard drive test, and recommended  Archive and Install (this MacBook Pro runs Leopard). Went to sleep hoping to have good news, but Archive and Install hung half way through - copied all files, but in "previous" folder.  No room left to try again
Went to Apple Store again, and  kind Genius  Bar guy booted me up to his LaCie drive and I was able to transfer files manually to my backup drive - took all day and lots of coffee LOTS of corrupt InDesign CS3 files that stalled the back up (probably was the cause of Time MAchine not working) so had to transfer in small packets.  With all the corrupt files, we thought maybe it was a software issue
Clean install, transferred most files back seemed okay for a few days, then started freezing, then yesterday, the grey screen apple and beach ball spinning on start up. Back to square one  Got a loud buzz on restart a few times during the entire mess, was planning on installing new RAM, and Genius had said if after clean install I still had problems it might be the RAM. Beautiful people at Crucial overnighted me new RAM.  But to no avail.
Have booked the Genius Bar again late tonight but this computer has had 2 new motherboards (one when a new graphics card had to be replaced on this model and one later), the HD has passed hard drive test many times, not sure what else could be wrong - after clean install worked like a dream for a few days! Then - zip.
Had 3 years of Apple Care, just ended so feeling a little frustrated - genius said computer is no way too old or out of date (and I can't afford new Adobe Creative Suite anyway).  What other problems would cause failure to boot?
Thanks,
Annexit

  • My MacBook Pro 15in won't load windows8

Hello, I have a problem with my MacBook Pro.... Maybe you guys can help me. When I try to booth my Mac to windows 8, it loads but then the screen goes black. But sometimes it says that windows couldn't load correctly. It was working fine until now. How can I fix this? Thanks!

    Hi Evaander,
I'm not a Windows person, but it sounds like the installation has become corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. I would ask this question in the Windows forum as it sounds more like a software issue than hardware: https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software

  • MacBook Pro 2013 won't turn back on. URGENT!!!

I got this computer mid October 2012. It has been working great. It's not damaged at all and I don't use it every day. I plugged in my apple iPhone 4S two nights ago and right when I plugged it in the the USB the computer completely shut off. When I put the charger in to charge my computer, the green light on the charger is barely visible. I have no idea what to do and I need it to be working ASAP. I have to write 16 pieces of poetry for an honors class due this week. Please help!!!

The iPhone USB cable may have had a short in it. Do you have a backup of your Mac's data? The quickest way to fix it would probably be to have it evaluated at the Apple Store, and get it replaced if necessary.

  • My Macbook Pro suddenly won't read my hard drive.

My Macbook Pro suddenly won't read my 750GB WD Elements Hard drive.
It was working earlier today but when I went to press play on my TV show in VLC it said the files couldn't be read. So i reopended them all and they still didn't work. I closed down all programs running that could possibly be using my hard drive but it said it was being used so I force ejected it and when I plugged it back in it didn't work.
It comes up with an error message "this disk can't be read by this computer" but it still shows up in disk utility. In disk utility though it says it is a 2.2TB hard drive which confuses me. also I the buttons for "verify disk" and "repair disk" are greyed out.
Is there something that I can do to try and get my hard drive working again?

If I'm not mistaken, this drive is bus-powered. MBPs seem to have frequent problems with bus-powered drives, probably because they don't provide enough power on the USB bus.

It is possible that the drive or USB interface are damaged. However, it is too early to decide. You need to connect the drive to a desktop machine (Mac or PC), or provide more power to the drive (with a power supply, if the drive accepts it, or a USB Y-cable and a USB power supply, rated 1A or more).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

My MacBook Pro 13" won't turn on 90% of the time I try to get it running, and when it does turn on, even on a charger, it shuts down if I stop using it for 2+ seconds and it won't turn back on. Should I replace the battery?  It doesn't hold a charge either...

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

  • How can I erase the data on my 2009 macbook pro that won't turn on because of a faulty motherboard? Do I just remove the hard drive, install it in a working mac, and erase it that way?

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • MacBook pro still won't back up, not even with a cable.

I backed up my G4 tower wirelessly. I backed up my G4 Powerbook using an ethernet cable to the Timecapsule LAN port. (Of course now that I've upgraded to 10.5.2 neither of their airport cards works anymore. No fix for that so far.)
But the MacBook Pro still won't back up. Not even with a cable. I've tried using the cable to the Timecapsule's LAN port. Nothing. I've tried connecting to the Timecapsule's ethernet port. Nothing.
In fact, when I go into network preferences....ethernet is not even an option for connecting to anything. My choices are: Airport, Bluetooth and Firewire.
Exactly how am I supposed to back up my MacBook Pro? It won't do it wirelessly and I can't do it with an ethernet cable either.
    Timecapsule POS!

Hmm...let me see if I can help you. In your Network preference pane, click on the '+'. Then select Ethernet from the drop down menu. After you click OK, you should be able to configure the ethernet interface to connect to your TC. After that, you should be able to connect to it with the your ethernet cable.
As far as your not being able to use your MBP's airport, I'm not certain what that particular problem is - I haven't had any problems with my TC and this MBP that I'm using (indeed, my problem is connecting wireless with my PB G4 (with WPA that is, it'll work using WEP)).
Hope my first paragraph helps you.

  • MacBook Pro (2011) Won't Charge Without Restart

Hi guys, I searched the forums for this problem but couldn't find a match. When I plug the power cable into my 2011 17" MacBook Pro it won't take a charge and the light on the cable doesn't come on. However if I restart the computer, the light will come on and it will start charging. This sounds like a software issue to me and I haven't had the problem until recently so I'm guessing it's caused by the latest OS X update. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue and found a fix?

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the appropriate method.
    Best.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 won't boot

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" won't boot. Second time dealing with this this year. Apple Store charged me $300+ to fix it the first time. It worked for a few months, but stopped working again. Took it to the shop again and asked them to fix it for good this time. They wanted to charge me $310. I said NO. why would they charge me twice for a repair I asked them to do before? How widespread is this problem? I know for a fact I'm not the only one dealing with this problem.

What have you done to define your problem?  Look at this comprehensive troubleshooting article and perhaps you can find a solution:

  • Data transfer from 08 macbook pro that won't start up to new macbook pro?

i have a 2008 macbook pro which won't start up properly, although, it will will start up with the Ctrl+T command which to my knowledge allows it to become like an external hard drive.
my question is, which cable will i need to transfer data to my newer macbook pro that only has thunderbolt connections, and what are the limitations to the files i can move over? basically i need all my document files, iTunes files, and garage band files...

    1. You need a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
    2. All of your personal files can be moved over.

Got it. Thanks. I deleted the mouse (not an apple, but a logitech which has worked fine for me) and then re-discovered it and it's working. Appreciate the advice.
