MacBook Pro lid

My three year old MacBook Pro lid has stopped locking when closed.  Having to clamp it down with a book.  Any advice please?

Take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.  Let them fix it.

How do I use my macbook pro lid closed?

Well what i'm trying to do is keep file sharing on while macBook is closed so i can access files through "newtwok" (Back to my mac) with my imac...
Ideally i would then control my macBook with screen sharing on my imac while the MacBook is stored behind my iMac...
Somehow it worked before but now it stopped...and everytime i close the lid ..mac book pro goes black screen and completly disconnects from the newtwork...
Everything works fine with lid open..
I am trying to do this because i have a new imac with thunderbold and an older macbook pro with mini display port..and as you might already know...you canot connect these thow devices using thunderbolt cable...which really *****....there is also no adaport enabling this...and i really dont need to buy another mac book that just has one more hole in it >.<
Anyway..hope there is a solution somewhere to keep file sharing going while lid down..
    regards remo

  • What is the cracking sound when I open my MacBook Pro lid?

When opening and closing MacBook Pro lid, it makes a cracking sound. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? It's not the hard drive because Geek Squad ran a test and everything passed.

Try this:  Loosen the screws in the rear of the MBP (by the hinge) and re-torque them.  See if that will alleviate the problem. You will need a 00 Philips driver.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro, Lid-Closed Mode

Hello, I'm considering getting an Apple Cinema Display to use with my MacBook Pro. I understand that most modern MacBooks, including the Pro are lid-closed mode compatible.
    A) I understand that one must have the display, keyboard, and mouse to use the notebook in lid-closed mode. Is it true that the Apple Wireless mice and keyboards are compliant as well? If I've read this article correctly, then yes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1308?viewlocale=en_US
    B) The screen doesn't turn on, back inside the notebook does it? That would be a redundant use of power.
    C) Is lid-closed mode harmful to the longevity or otherwise well-being of my MacBook Pro?

Is it true that the Apple Wireless mice and keyboards are compliant as well?
    Yes.
Is lid-closed mode harmful to the longevity or otherwise well-being of my MacBook Pro?
    No.

  • MacBook Pro lid closes

I purchased a MacBook Pro 17" a couple of weeks ago now and noticed that when the MacBook is at a 90 degree angle the lid closes.
For example when I'm using my MacBook on my lap and have knees up the screen closes. It seems to be the hinges are loose. Is this normal? Or are the hinges week and should I contact apple?
*sorry if this is not the right field within the forum but I thought it's related to display just more hardware side**
    Thanks for any response.

And I quote- If the position of the screen is affected by gravity, there's a problem with the hinges.
90degrees aka balanced, gravity is pulling downward equally, disturb that balance aka move the mac and the screen falls, call apple.
If it's balanced at 90degrees without problem, 91-140deg and 89-0deg will still have issues. Proper hinges should not let the screen move at all (or very little) when you move your mac...
I work with My MBP screen at a 110degree angle, if the hinges were loose on mine, the screen would continually fall to 140deg.

  • Macbook pro lid squeaks

hi guys, i have a macbook pro mid 2009. The top lid makes a squeaking sound whenver i want to close it, opening is fine. it almost sounds like its rubbing against something something? my warranty has run out so calling apple wouldnt do much. i dont want to take it into a apple store and look like an idiot with such a small problem, it's just annoying. any ideas what it could be?

Get some waxed dental floss. Slide it between the hinge and the case, right where the two parts come in contact. Move it back and forth just as you would with your teeth, and make sure you get inside the thin space between them.
Open and close the lid a few times for the wax to properly seat.

  • Macbook Pro Lid Making Very Loud Cracking Noises

I recently got my Macbook Pro 13" screen replaced for a pixel defect. When I opened and closed my lid, the lid moved smoothly from either position.
Now, it feels as if the lid has more resistance when I operate it. Worst of all, when it is at a 90 degree angle and I slowly retract it, the lid makes a very loud "crack" from the hinge. Could it be that the lid's screws are in too tightly?

You can try a SMC reset:

  • MacBook Pro lid won't close and lock

Is anyone having problems with the MacBook Pro along these lines? The two small hooks in the lid do not catch, and so the lid will not lock in the down position. I've only had this machine for two weeks.

Don't be afraid to try using a toothpick if you do not want to wait on sending it in for repair.

If that's the case, then it is sad that Mac users get a tiny bit more than 90 degrees of screen opening when PC manufacturers have all sorts of tilt-swivel laptop/tablet screens. When the TiBook and G3 Series powerbooks opened up a full 180 degrees and it was the hinge that had problems, not the cable. When millions of digital still cameras and camcorders have LCD screens that open, swivel up, down, even all the way around and can close back up again. Yet Mac users can't even open up their laptops as far as they could just 6 months ago. Pretty soon it'll be the easiest to use laptop you can't even open. That way it's sure not to break.

  • Shut my MacBook Pro lid very hard, will this somehow affect my computer?

I started dropping my MBP and as it was falling I tried catching it mid air and ended up slamming it closed. It made such a loud sound and now I think something is wrong with it. Is there any coushining that could prevent serious damage? Thanks.

When a MacBook Pro is moved Sudden Motion Sensor will kick in and hard drive will be protected.
There are magnets in the lid and the computer to keep it closed tight.
Whenever you close the lid, a low level "thud" sound is heard.
    Is the computer performing normally?
    Is the display functioning properly?
Can you use the optical drive?
    Best.

  • New Macbook Pro Lid not Aligned Properly

    Hi all,
I received my new 2010 15" HR i7 Macbook Pro earlier this month (May) and have been very happy with it up until yesterday when I noticed that the screen lid and the rest of the body do are not aligned properly when the lid is closed. There is an offset of about 1.5mm in the left-to-righthand direction.
The computer is only weeks old and hasn't been dropped or mishandled, so I was wondering where I stand here. It's not a massive deal really, but I feel as a virtually brand new machine, this thing should be perfect. Would I be entitled to a replacement for this defect, and if so, how long would I likely be without a machine whilst I send it back etc. (it has some customisations so can't be exchanged in a retail store).
    Thanks in advance

Hi chapowski and welcome to Apple Discussions!
You are asking questions here which we don't really have any way of answering. Your best bet is to contact Apple ((44) 0844 209 0611 in the UK) and let them know your problem, and ask what they can do for you.
Just FYI, Apple typically does not replace computers unless they are unable to repair them. Since it is not a stock machine, a repair would likely take less time than a replacement anyway.
    Best of luck.

  • How to close MacBook Pro lid without the machine sleeping

I want to be able to close my lid and let applications keep running, such as a download but I don't see an option for it anywhere like in window$. Thanks.

InsomniaX does the job perfectly. Again watch out for fan overheat.
You can also keep the Macbook awake if you have the computer plugged into an external keyboard, mouse, and second display, in case you have any lying around.

  • I open my MacBook Pro lid, the screen comes on momentarily, then goes dark, and I can't do anything

    OS X  10.6..08
    MacBookPro6.2
I never reboot.  I have a lot of windoes open.  Every week or two I'll open the lid to get to work and the display comes on then goes off and I can't do anything.  The keyboard backlight is on.  If I close the lid the white pilot light on the front right edge is on.  I have not been able to guess a key combination to get it back.  The only thing I found is to press and hold the power key to force a reboot.  When it comes back up it usually sends a trouble report.

    MikeGMIT wrote:
The report is incomprehensible.  Is it saved somewhere?  If so I can grab it and post it here.
Inside your Utilites you will see the Console.app.  Click on it.  Reports will be there.
Yes I have tried a short press of the power button.  I've opened and closed and done short presses and waited several minutes for something to happen afer each action.
    Since I can't see the screen I can't close/quit applications.
It opens closes, sleeps wakes just fine several times a day, and for days in a row.  Then one day it exhibits this bad behavior.
Thanks for asking some questions and offering suggestions!!

  • Is the Macbook pro lid replacement covered under the guarantee?

I have a smalld dent on the lid and it is just 5 months old. Is there any way i can get it replaced for free/reduced cost as part of my warranty

No. That's called 'user damage' and is not covered under the AppleCare warranty.
    Sorry,
