Macbook pro locks up after doing the simplest tasks!
I seriously don't understand this. I am editing HDV, the most consumer cost efficient format available. I am doing a somewhat easy task - optical flow retiming in motion....ok no CG or crazy graphics, and my computer has locked up twice already. How are movies being made on the mac but I can't even slow a clip down without having to force shut down my entire machine I've got 3 gigs of ram....which should be enough....and I'm running the latest version of everything.
I am editing HDV, the most consumer cost efficient format available.
And yet one of the most processor intensive codecs out there. Decoding HDV for editing is very difficult...GOP and all that.
I am doing a somewhat easy task - optical flow retiming in motion
That is hardly a simple task. Just because it is a few clicks on your end, doesn't mean it is easy. That is pretty processor intensive in its own right...then you add the HDV codec. Yeah, I can see why the machine crashed.
This is why people capture HDV as other codecs, like DVCPRO HD and ProRes. MUCH easier to deal with.

Macbook Pro keeps freezing after replaced the hard drive
hi there,
recently, my macbook pro (15" 2.53 ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd) hard drive crashed, having no warranty left, i went through all of the troubleshooting but nothing worked. i took it into futureshop and they tried the diagnostic and concluded that the hard drive crashed, and they told me to find a new hard drive in their store and theyll replace it for free (because it only takes a few minutes). i found a 500GB 2.5" SEAGATE hard drive in the store, and they fit it in for me. then i took it home and installed the O/S myself.
IT WORKED GREAT!!!!! but my other hard drive was too corrupt to save any of the data, so i had to start from scratch :/
after about a week or so, my mac gradually starting freezing up more and more, and i was worried because that was the initial problem i had.
its been about a month and a half since the first freeze, and im sick of it! about 4 or 5 times a day, the thing would just stop everything its doing, and the mac wheel would spin for about 30 seconds or so froze,, and then go back to normal.
whats confusing is that when im on skype and the mac freezes, i can still talk to the person from voice to voice, but EVERYTHING else just stops lik my itunes and the words im typing.
SO PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE ITS KILLING ME!!!!
i am willing to do anything or even replace my hard drive again just to fix this problem, so please your help would be greatly appreciated!
THANKS !!!Hi r,
Why not bring it back to the place you bought the HD and have them test it? If it is the HD, many places will give you a new HD if it has been under a certain time period (often 30 days), otherwise you may have to send it in to Seagate for a warranty replacement. -
MacBook Pro locking up after fresh install...
I was givin a MacBook Pro (A1276) at my old job because we had a customer that didn't want to pay for repairs and just was sick of looking at it. So I took it on as a project. Now I'm quite seasoned with PC's and Windows based software, but Mac and OSX I've never had to work on at this level. So I'm lost. This system has a Core2 Duo @ 2.40GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB Toshiba HDD, GeForce 320M... anything short of slow. Esspesialy for an operation system that makes better use of it's resources than say, Windows.
Now, originally, it was running so slow, a reinstall of OSX (Mavericks) over the internet via recovery, wasnt even possible. ANY thing you tried to do, would start the system beachballing non-stop. It would just sit like that for hours. After opening the laptop up, reseating ALL visable connections on the mainboard, everything started to work. I was finally able to complete a restore using Mavericks and got it up and running like a hot knife through butter. Now, after about a day or so of use, it starts acting up again. You open ANYTING, and it locks up and starts beachballing again. I've reinstalled OSX 5 times now, same thing each time. Works for a while, then is unuseable. But before I couldnt even do that much. Now I started to think it is the HDD, but it always passes every test I run. I dont know what to try next. The system isnt running hot, and nothing is eating at the CPU. It just, locks up... Someone help me!This is my current output stat...

Macbook pro locked impossible to reinstall the system
Hi guys. I have a big problem with my macbook pro bought in september 2009. Recently I have uninstalled the system in order to make it run better : big mistake. Now, when I insert the install dvdand push the option key to reinstall the system, the computer is showing a locked padlock with a place to put a password. I have tried all my password even my apple ID one, thinking that may from icloud but it doesn't work. Help me please....
No that sounds like a EFI boot password. Try holding down the C key (No Caps) to boot directly from the DVD drive.
If it is a EFI boot password and you have no idea how it got there your only option is to take to an Apple store and see if they can remove it. -
The title says it all! After installing the new Mavericks update, I cannot put my MacBook Pro to sleep after a single press of the Power Button like before. Does it have something to do with this update or my MacBook Pro? Or do I have to change something in Settings?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!Send your opinion to Apple.
But remember that there are others.
A moment is a medieval unit of time equal to 1.5 minutes or 1/40 of an hour. This reckoning is derived from the work of Bartholomeus Anglicus, writing in 1240 that each hour was divided into four points, each point into ten moments, each moment into twelve ounces, and each ounce into 47 atoms.
In modern English it usually refers to "a short period of time",[2] the exact length remaining ambiguous. -
Graphic card problem maybe? Since when I have changed the hard drive to my macbook pro and I installed all the new softwares, my mac is very slow and the screen gives crazy pictures, could maybe be the graphic card, does anybody have experienced this?
after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

My 13.3" macbook pro will not power up.The battery indicator light does not come on.The Mag safe charging light flickers green and red dimly.I had a cell phone connected to the USB port.
This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
1. Take off bottom case
2. Unplug battery - blurry image here: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/03cC79r5Dx4/0.jpg
3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did) -
After having yet another problem with my MacBook Pro and having to wipe the drive, I am now unable to sync my iPhones etc without erasing all the music on them. Is there a way around this? I have no other library!
iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.columbus new boy wrote:
How crap is that?
It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer. -
I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
Help.BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
Sorry,

I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore. I had to rebuild my iTunes Library by dragging my music folders in my iTunes Media into the iTunes Application and rebuild my playlists manually. After plugging my iPhone 5 into the computer USB, it immediately recognized my iPhone 5, showing: last backups, space left on my iPhone & all options available. I then checked the box to manually manage music etc. The problem I am now having is that when I actually try to drag music from my iTunes to my phone a prompt comes up saying that my iPhone is not an authorized device. What should I do? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!
jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks. -
I did a force close on Safari and after rebooting my macbook pro, i no longer see the Safari icon on the dock. How do i get i back?
If you can't get dragging to work, just click on Safari from your Applications folder, and it should appear in the dock. Then you can right-click on the icon and PIN it permanently there.

I have updated my iphone software to ios5 and everything is working perfectly except for the wireless sync. When I plug my phone into my computer (I'm using a MacBook Pro running leopard) it does not give me the option to check the box in the summary section to sync wirelessly. Can anyone help? Please and thanks

Oh. Gosh. What's Windows got to do with anything? You're on Leopard, on a Mac.
It seems from other discussions my current OS on my laptop is the reason why it won't sync -
i have a brand new macbook pro that i was doing a data transfer via firewire from an old macbook, it got stopped/cable pulled out, now have spinning wheel of death that wont stop, how do i reboot/stop the wheel of death and start again? (this time il use time machine transfer)
Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.

Trying to set up iCloud on my MacBook Pro, and I get to the point where it tells me to view my email for further instructions on verification of my account, but there is no such email in my inbox, even after submitting multiple requests to resend the email. Any idea what I can do? Mark
Well, running on a 2006 model. I did not have a startup disc. Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006. Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set. And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard. And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive. I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now. We'll see what they tell me . I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff. So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc. we'll see if they can recover. If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system. Just not sure at this point.
