Macbook Pro Login Loop
At the login screen, I type the correct username and password like always. It accepts it, loads until the blue screen, then loops back to the login screen. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this, or if I should call support or bring it to the apple store?
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

My issue is that sometimes when I try to wake the computer from sleep mode, the computer will take about 2 to 3 minutes for the login screen to come up. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what to do about it. This has happened in Leopard and Tiger and I have had fresh installs of both, and it still does it.
Thanks for the help.
Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz
2 GB RamCheck for software and firmware updates first, if all that is in order try a SMC reset.
1. turn your mac off
2. remove power cord and battery.
3. hold the power button down for a good 10 seconds.
4. put the battery and power in again.
5. restart and see if it worked.
You could also try a PRAM reset.
Turn on your mac and immediately after the startup sound hold down the OptionAlt+PR keys.
Do this until you heard the startup chime a 3rd time then let go and let it boot. -
MacBook Pro login nightmare!!!
Hi,
I am having a huge problem with my MacBook Pro.
When the login screen appears and i put my password in, it is not accepted.
BUT, this IS (100%) the correct password and user name. the password has not changed, i am the only person that uses the laptop and i had successfully logged on with the same password and user 10min prior. i had to restart after changing some settings in the program Traktor Duo, (i was arranging some midi controllers to be used in the program).
SO, i soon decided just to reset the password on the account with the use of the start up disk. however im stuck again because when i try to select the admin account from the password reset utility, it is not there. there is only this one account on the laptop and it is not showing up.
so it's almost like during the course of a simple reboot (which was conducted correctly), the only existing account on the laptop has been deleted.
Other details:
1. Reading other forums, i found many people had problems similar to this after a software update. i have not recently had an update.
2. Im not sure if this had any baring on the situation but about a week ago i was playing with the bluetooth settings to connect with my phone and i changed the name of the computer. however this was only the name of the device that would show up once it had been found. AND, i had logged in and out with these settings in place successfully many times.
3. Before you ask i am definite that caps lock is off and i am typing correctly.
4. in 48 hours of searching, i have not found a single thread on any mac discussion forum that talks about this. i have been to both the Apple store in sydney and an authorized reseller and the staff there where dumbfounded (i have the next available appointment at the genius bar but that is 5 days away and really need my laptop for work in the next 2 days at least.)
Reformatting the computer is really not something i want to do, i have so many things on there that i require of work, some are backed up on external HDD's, some are not.
Thank you very much in advance for reading this and for any light you can shed on the issue.Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I once had a similar problem--my iBook would not recognize my password and would not allow me to log in. Apple determined that the OS had become corrupted and I ended up having to reinstall the OS. This happened when I was trying to change the password on the last day of Applecare.
Do you have access to another Mac? If so, it might be prudent to see if you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to retrieve any files you do not have backups for.
Once your data is safe, you may want to try reinstalling the OS. I don't think the Archive and Install option is specifically available any more, but I think you can reinstall the OS without having to reformat and restore your data. However, I'm not certain how best to do this, except that it would be prudent to have all of your data backed up in advance.
Good luck! -
Yosemite - MacBook Pro: Boot loop/Blue screen
Hi, I've been running Yosemite on my MacBook Pro for about a week now, then while using it yesterday the screen randomly went blue with black lines through it.
At the time I was playing a beta version of Football Manager 2015, so I thought that it was an error with the game. I forced a shutdown and left it for a minute or so. I turned it back on and now it continues to reboot itself during the status bar on startup (after about 40%).
I have already tried a couple of solutions:
Command + R: Blue screen
Command + Shift: White screen freeze during status bar startup
Option key: brings up Recovery but after clicking that the screen goes blue.
Command + Option + P + R: Still reboots. No change
Any suggestions/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I Have the same problem. Did you find a solution .

Brand new Macbook pro login problem after migration
I just bought a new Mac Book Pro, and decided to migrate my documents and applications too it - but did not tick network passwords.
On finishing the migration it is asking me for the login to my account.
Actually I bought this for a friend, and was frustrated to see it ask for my password, but it is asking for an old one, which I have forgotten. Then it asked me for the Master Password that I remembered, but it still will not let me type in a new password.
Extremely frustrating since I bought it this afternoon.
Can you help me - or will I have to return to the shop tomorrow?[Boot the installation DVD, and change the password from there (HT1274)|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274]

Want to change my MacBook Pro login wallpaper.
How can I change the log in wallpaper?
Loginox, The Simple Way To Change your Login background Image ...
This works great. -
Right after I login, my wallpaper loads, and I see my dock for a few seconds, then, it goes back to the login window. This repeats over and over again. Never giving me access to anything on the computer.
I had looked up a similar problem for prior OS's, related to launchservices plist, but I can't seem to find the same file in 10.6?That was an old profile. This is on a new MacBook Pro that had Leopard, and upgraded to Snow Leopard. It was running for a few days fine with Snow Leopard, then one day, it went to sleep, and wouldn't wake up. Upon restart, this resulted (constant loop).
I was able to have the computer start up by removing ALL of the com.apple.xxx.plist files in ~/Library/Preferences, but now, the entire computer is SLUGGISH, as in, not usable sluggish. It is fine when starting up from external hard drive. I think I'll just backup my user folder and erase and reinstall. -
Hi ,
I m having a new issue with my Macbook Pro - at ten minute intervals, the machine re-enters the login screen and prompts me to login again.
I have OS X version 10.8.2 The only recent events of note are ..yesterday, I removed Onyx - the Mac cleaner by right clicking and selecting move to trash (on the advice of internet forums). Onyx no longr worked with this version of OS, I believe.
The other event was my 12 yr old recently hacked into the Macbook without my knowedge and re-badged the Macbook as Jonny's Macbook Pro, instead of Daddys Macbook pro. This latter incident, which resulted in a firm ticking off, is freaking me out as my son said he accessed KeyChain which he tells me is a repository for system passwords. Tell me please that's not the source of this issue. Im also concerned of cyber attacks and whether some cyber criminal has accessed my system.
I have Time Machine running well and have a month's worth of full backup so could effect a restore if needed.

After first installing the new Mountain Lion upgrading Lion on my Macbook Pro was a little slow, so I decided to format and install Mountain Lion via a thumb drive. After installation on my Macbook Pro was restarting all the time and showing a black screen with codes on the screen. I decided to reformat and reset the PRAM, and that seems to have worked. Occasionally a black screen appears with the codes and my macbook restarts again. Last night I updated the Mountain Lion and error and looping retornartam. I thought I had lost all my works, do more entered in the login screen. I turned off my macbook, went to sleep and this morning I called and finally worked Do not know what's going on in my friends' macbook not occur this problem. The macbook them is the 2011 13 "i5 2.0Ghz and another 2010 and they both work perfectly with the Mountain Lion.
Below is the error that occurred this morning after login.

How to index loops on a MacBook Pro?
I am on a MacBook Pro Laptop. I want to keep the Apple Jam Packs on my portable external 320gb Hard Drive. I try dragging and dropping them from my hard drive in into Garage Band's Loop Browser and it asks me if I want it to copy them to my computer or just leave them on the hard drive. I choose to leave them yet it just pops up a loading screen for 1/4 of a second and then doesnt do anything. I have tried restarting Garage Band yet it still wont work... So I need help =]

Why can't I login with my Apple ID when I try to setup Cloud on my MacBook Pro?
Why can't I login with my Apple ID when I try to setup Cloud on my MacBook Pro?
thanks,
SimonFirst question that I am not clear on your answer about: Is the Apple ID itself a valid email address, and the same one that you have as your Primary email address on your account? If the actual Apple ID is not an email address, then that is why you are not able to sign on to iCloud or to verify it....it must be an email address.
If it is an email address then:
Update your OS to the latest version - 10.8.5
Once you have updated, reboot the Mac and then go to Preferences>iCloud and try to sign on with your Apple ID again.
Check Manage your Apple ID to make sure that your Apple ID/Primary email address is verified.
If the problem persists, contact iCloud Support to see if they can provide you with an explanation of the meaning of the message. If the Apple ID has already been verified, then I'm not sure why you would be getting this messge:

Cheers and best of luck!

My Macbook Pro is frozen on the login page with a white screen and only my login picture. How do I fix this? I can't turn it off and I closed it and let it charge but it's still not working. It's only 3 months old and was working perfectly fine 30min before this happened.
Hello Kierasully,
I would start your troubleshooting with the article below for issues of not being able to log in to your Mac. Start with booting up in to Safe Boot as well as resetting PRAM on your Mac. If that does not work, then verify the hard drive with booting to the Recover HD and go to Disk Utility to verify it.

My MacBook Pro will turn on and get to the login screen. After I login though it goes to a white screen.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Hi I do not want iTunes to open up automatically when I turn on my macbook pro. I tried going to System Preferences>Users and Groups>Login Items and then I took iTunes off the list but it still opens up automatically when I turn on my laptop. What should I do?
Hi r,
Make sure you close iTunes before shutdown. And you're quite welcome.
