MacBook Pro logs out before Time Capsule has finished backing up

I can't seem to get the initial back-up done, my MacBook Pro logs out before Time Capsule has a chance to finish backing up, approximately 95GB to complete and it only gets to 12 or 15GB. Any ideas?

I have an Apple Time Capsule which backs up by wireless. For the last 3 days it has not backed up. I get this message:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
I have gone into Mac Help and followed this down to stage 4:
under shared it lists my time capsule and my husband's iMac - both use the time machine but we have switched his off temporarily.  Clicking on my Time capsule I get "Connected" and "Sharepoint" - I didn't have to enter connect or password
I don't understand stage 5: how and where do I select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups ?  How do I know which it is? My disk utility lists 160.04 TOSHIBA MK... with sub-heading Macintosh HD.  It also lists (with a "CD" icon) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS22N
Under stage 6, how and where do I Locate your backup ? I try dragging my Time capsule from Finder to the Disk Utility side panel but it won't go.  What is my computer's name?
Please someone help!  I'm completely stumped.
    Thanks,
    Maggie
    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

    Hello,
Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • MacBook Pro logs out repeatedly on its own at startup

Hopefully this question is posted in the appropriate location.
When I start my MacBook Pro, I am asked to insert my password and login.
Upon entering my password, the computer will display the desktop, and applications will begin to open. About 10 seconds after, the computer will log me out, and ask me to sign in again. It does this at least 5 times. After restarting the computer, it will let me in.
I called Apple for support, but the associate said that she has never heard of a problem like this before.
    Any troubleshooting ideas?

have you checked for statup items?
    if you can login.
    apple menu,
    system preferences,
    Users,
click on the user account from the left hand list
click on the login items tab
if you have applications in that list; they could be causing the issue. (crashing the computer and dumping you back to the login window) try removing any thing in the list. See if it helps.

  • Retina MacBook Pro - Logging Out

My Retina MacBook Pro is automatically logging me out while I am in the middle of using it!
For the past 4 days, I'll just be sitting here at my desk, browsing the web, or working on an e-mail, and the next thing I know, I am being logged out and presented with my standard login screen.
I've seen 1 or 2 reports of this, and am wondering if a replacement is in order.  ?
    Specs and Details
Retina MacBook Pro - 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7  (been using it for 2 weeks)
    RAM Upgraded to 16GB
    256GB Hard Drive
Connected to a brand new Apple Thunderbolt Display.
OS X Lion 10.7.4 with ALL updates installed.

Hi, I experienced exactly the same when first using the new rMBP
It seems that there is an issue with Lion that causing intermittent problems when switching between integrated and discreet graphic cards.
    You have 2 options:
    1. Upgrade to Mountain Lion - the problem is gone in ML thats for sure (and of course its designed for this beautiful new machine)
    2. If you still want to wait for a while, download gfxCardStatus and you decide whether to switch or stay just on discrete or integrated...this app works just fine too
I was using option 2 to manage the issue, before upgrading....either solution worked for me.
    Good luck

  • MacBook Pro cannot connect to Time Capsule

My Mac Book was connecting to my time capsule and recently quit being able to connect.  Do not know what happened. Have tried resetting and redoing and now my computer does not even recognize the hard drive as being there.

Can your MacBook Pro access the Time Capsule if it is connected by Ethernet? Does your MBP have any issues connecting to other Wi-Fi networks or just the TC's?

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro hard drive to Time Capsule

I recently bought a Time Capsule. I know I can use that as an external hard drive to save disc space on my MacBook Pro. How can I transfer files that are already on my MacBook Pro hard drive to the time capsule? For instance, I have videos of my daughter saved on MacBook Pro that I can view on iTunes or transfer them to either my iPhone or iPod Touch. Is there a way to either move individual files or the entire folder to Time Capsule?
    Thank you!

Open the folder and drag the contents over.

I have a macbook pro running 10.6.8.  Since I got it over a year ago it will disconnect from the network when left idle and then not be able to reconnect.  All computers in the house have to be shut down and the router turned off in order to reconnect again.   My son just updated his macbook using my os disc and now his computer is doing the same thing.  What can we do?

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

  • New MacBook Pro does not recognize time capsule

Just picked up a new 13 inch MabBook Pro.  I would like to get my files from my backup which is on a time capsule (my old mac is completely dead).  the airport utility would not recognize it at all.  it is also my router, so i know the device is working.  thanks.

    Try with migration assistant.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
On Mavericks manually mount the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to Server.. and type
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you change that for the actual name or IP.

  • I cannot get my macbook pro to recognize my time capsule.

I bought a data cable and it shows up as a cd on my desktop and it won't let me add anything to it, and it doesn't show up in time machine. I read that an Ethernet cable would work, so I bought one and it does not work either. The port its plugged into on the time capsule turns green when I plug the other end into my computer, but that's all it does. It won't show up anywhere in my computer. The light on the front of the time capsule is green for about 3 seconds then it is solid orange for about 5 seconds then it starts blinking. I am getting very frustrated! Thank you for your help! (oh and I have tred unplugging the time capsule and plugging it in again and it doesn't help)

Getting the TC to work with a college wireless system is very difficult.
You need to setup the TC manually and make sure that it doesn't cause network issues with the local system.
To help you do that I need information..
What is the network setup where you are now?
I particularly need to know details of the IP address you get from the system.
I wrote a post a while back with the method.. look at the screenshots near the bottom of the page.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
Since you are forced to plug ethernet cable into your computer anyway.. it is much easier, and faster and more reliable to just go and buy a neat 2.5" 1TB USB backup drive.. you might get them for $60-70 now.
    Simply start a new backup.

  • Would someone please help me figure out why Time Machine has stopped backing up?

Hi, I am a Macbook Pro User running 10.6.8.  I recently moved all of my photos, music and videos over to a 1TB Western Digital HD that I attach via usb.  I believe that this is when the problem started.  When I enter Time Machine, the last backup was on Feb. 17th, which I believe might have been the date that I moved everything..  Thankfully, I just happened to catch that my 2TB iomega HD that I had been using with Time Machine was no longer working, even though I have received no indication otherwise.  I've poured over many queries on this site, as well as many others.  I've tried deleting the TM plist file in my main file folder to no avail, reset TM and reselected the backup disc as well, but nothing seems to correct the problem.  I have noticed, incidentally (or not), that my first backup date was one day short of a year before the last one.  Maybe just a coincidence, maybe not, but worth noting, I thought.
I just tried a backup, and got this from Console:
    Apr 18 14:50:07 Doyle-Hinsons-MacBook-Pro com.apple.backupd[1399]: Starting standard backup

I'm a bit of a novice at this, so explanations in laymen's terms would be greatly appreciated, and I express my deepest appreciation in advance to anyone willing to try and help.
    Many thanks!

Thanks for your response, Linc.  I have everything important to me i.e. pics, music, files, etc backed up elsewhere.  Being that this is the backup drive I've used since the beginning, do I need to worry about losing other data that is on the drive, if I plan on backing up with a different one?  In other words, is there irreplaceable data on the drive that a new backup won't be able to replace (data that's imperative to my computer's functions)?  Thanks again!

  • HT3728 My Time Capsule has stopped backing up

I am getting this mesage The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/George’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.

    Welcome to the club..
    The solution is rather easy..
Pull out the power cord from the TC.
    Count to 10.
Plug the power cord back into the TC.
    That generally fixes it.

  • My Time Capsule has stopped backing up.

It hasn't backed up now for 44 days. I've tried everything - I have the latest firmware, I've tried resetting all of the settings but nothing seems to work. Can someone shed any light on this?
It is connected to my existing wireless network.

This may not show you anything useful, but I'd try requesting that Time Machine back up ("Back Up Now" from the Time Machine menu), then open the Console utility and look in "system.log" for messages tagged with "backupd".
