Macbook pro looses login settings with thunderbolt display

I've noticed that on occasion my MacBook Pro looses its desktop settings when connected to a Thunderbolt display. Why Thunderbolt display discards my MacBook Pro window environment settings upon boot-up is unknown to me. I can tell when this happens when my desktop loads different backgrounds from those on my MacBook Pro.  Furthermore, the option in the System Preferences for changing my desktop background will cease to function. I even notice system wide speed degradation.
In order to correct this and reload my MacBook Pro settings I must identify a specific file named “com.apple.loginwindow.plist” and delete it. Doing so resolves whatever existing conflict so that Thunderbolt displays the correct background and enables System Preferrences to work properly.
I would appreciate very much if anyone has a resolution for this problem.

TomBoltz

I think you need to do a search of the of these forums to see if there is an answer.  I saw a lot of suggestions, but the #1 solution is buying a brand new cable.  I have personal experience with that.  My son recently switched from an HP to a MacBook Pro.  The HDMI cable worked perfectly with the HP.  It didn't with the Mac.  He got a new cable for the Mac, everything resolved itself.
I have heard all kinds of speculation on it, but it happens frequently enough that there must be something going on.  I'd spend $30 on a new MiniDisplayPort to DVI connector or whatever you use.

  • What display is more suitable for a macbook pro, an iMac or a Thunderbolt Display?

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and will be purchasing a Macbook Pro upon my return. This will be my first time owning a mac as I have always been a Windows user so I am unaware of which product works the best with one another. I am curious to know though which display will work the best with a macbook pro; an iMac or a Thunderbolt Display? Any guidance or advice anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Both work very well with the MBP.
In essence the iMac is the ThunderBolt Display with an added Mac computer inside.
If you don't need a second Mac computer save the money, get the Display and invest the money in more RAm or a bigger harddisk for the MBP.

  • HT5219 When I close the lid on my MacBook Pro the print on the thunderbolt display gets very small & hard to read. How do I prevent this?

When I close the lid on my MacBook Pro the print on thunderbolt screen is very small & hard to read. If i keep the lid open on the MacBook Pro the print is big and easy to read. How do I prevent this from happening?

    Hi JanStran,
You may need to check your Display settings and/or resolution.
The article below explains how to used Clamshell mode "closed display" on your Macbook Pro, versus "mirroring."

  • My MacBook Pro overheats when connected to Thunderbolt Display

I've had these since August 30 of this year.  I switch to Mac and brough home two Pro's and two Thunderbolts.  They have been doing fine, not a problem yet.  Until Friday, when mine started overheating.  My MacBook Pro Retina runs fine on it's own.  But I came home, plugged it into the Thunderbolt, and immediately it started overheating.  It did the same thing, when I woke up Saturday it was so hot, I could not pick it up with my hands.  I found another thread with similar problems, but it was four pages of "I have this problem, too".  It's not sitting on a desk, it's in the stand sold by Apple, and I"ve had it plugged up to the Thunderbolt 80% of the time since we bought it, but never had a problem until five days ago.  Clamshell mode in a stand with wireless Keyboard and Track Pad, all the newest releases of Pro Retina and Thunderbolt. All the updates, everything.  Any ideas?

Connecting an external monitor/display turns on the high-performance graphics adapter which can generate significant heat.  The base-plate can get pretty hot (Apple states this and for this reason says to not use the MacBook Pro on your lap.  They don't even refer to them as laptops.).  Just make sure that nothing is blocking the cooling ports under the display hinge.  If the MacBook Pro actually overheats, it will shut down.  So, don't worry yet.

  • MacBook pro 15" Retina - connecting to Thunderbolt display issue

    Hi
Is everyone else have trouble connecting the thunderbolt to the MacBook Pro with Retina? With my air it was plug and play (nomatter if the MBA were asleep or awake - it would just wake up when I uesed the wirless mouse or keyboard), but now I have to restart my Mac everytime I connect it to the thunderbolt display.
It simply will not "wake" when I connect the thunderbolt cable. I have to open the screen and the restart..
Also there is a lot of "flickering" . almost like it is "trying" to work.. but have to be reastartet everytime.

Mine is even worse...after connecting it the display flickers and turns black...the mainboard of the display was changed but the symptoms returned after some few hours of usage...

  • Spinning wheel when trying to log into Macbook Pro 17" connected to 27" thunderbolt display

I've got a 17" Macbook Pro connected to a brand new 27" Thunderbolt display.  When I attempt to log in from user screen I consistently get the spinning wheel of death and have to power down on  frequent basis.  More a nuisance than anything but with the amount of money invested on the components in front of me this seems slightly silly.  I can use this work around pretty easily, but my wife isn't real swift when it comes to these things so I'm looking for a long term fix.

    lRlevolution,
if your hard drive has failed, then no amount of resetting the SMC will fix your hard drive — you’ll need to purchase a new hard drive (or SSD), format it in Disk Utility, install it in place of the old one, and install OS X on it. (If you plan on installing it yourself, you’ll need a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the four screws from your current hard drive and put them in your new drive.) Is there a reason to believe that there might be a motherboard issue involved?

  • Macbook Pro won't work with external display?

The very first time I connected my brand new Macbook Pro to my 23" Cinema Display the laptop screen displayed mostly static, though the external monitor continued to work. The computer was sent to Apple for repair. Apple replaced the logic board. Though the nature of the problem changed following the "repair" (the Macbook's screen now goes dark instead of displaying noise) the laptop still will not drive the external monitor successfully without multiple re-starts. I've experimented with turning the sleep mode on and off as well as the screen saver. No effect. Is anyone using this set up successfully or is there some fatal design flaw in the Macbook Pro? System 1.4.8, 2 gigs RAM. Thanks.
Macbook Pro Intel Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • MacBook Pro External Speaker Hum With External Display

When I plug my MacBook Pro into a set of external speakers, I get a loud-to-deafening hum depending on the volume that the speakers are set to. However, this only happens if I have an external monitor plugged in. I unplugged the macbook, and this did not stop the hum, and I turned off the extra display and this did not stop the hum, neither did actually unplugging it from its power source, the only thing that stops it is taking the vga cord out of the displayport to vga adapter.
Any ideas as to why this hum happens? It's not always just a static hum either, occasionally there are crackles, like from a record or something.

thinking that you are using a stereo cable 1/8" to 1/8" there can be a few explanations to that .. one the cable could damaged internally mixing audio signals .. or it can be that the wiring diagram is a bit off ( the jack has 3 connectors on it ) ..or the input you use on your speakers were not meant for a stereo cable .. the jack input you use on your speakers could be damaged ..or that hole you plug them in was not an input at all
Now that you are over the problem .. These don't really matter much ..
    Take care

  • Sidebars on macbook pro when on TV with thunderbolt

I have a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable going to my high def TV. I get bars on the sides of the TV and I change the resolution to 1080p and other resolutions and can't seem to get a good fit. Also the audio is not working unless I run surround sound directly to the macbook. Anyone have a solution? I am running OS X 10.8.2 (12C3012) and I have the 13 inch pro bought new 4 months ago. Thanks for any help!

i bought new sd card to download music. I did this tonight however although it appeared on sd card to have downloaded music it would only play podcasts over and over on my roberts music system. I then eventually after deleting podcasts on the SD card on my mac tried again. Again it would only play podcasts on sd card on music system. I then thought perhaps to delete all music on card but i am unable to do so.
Interestingly the sd card came up with NO NAME... I was unable to name this and when I checked the information on the new Sandisk 16Gb SD card bought this week from sainsbury it was dated 1980!! dont know if any relevance but its been a disaster spent whole pm on this last time it was so easy but misplaced the last sd card.
    Can you help? thanks

  • Macbook pro retina quit working with external displays

Just got a new external display, and can't get it to work with my MBP. I tried it via the mini display port and also via the HDMI connection. Then I tried to use my flatscreen tv just to test things out via HDMI and now that doesn't work either, I've done that quite a bit in the past. The only thing thats changed is I updated to Yosemite. I even tried different cables.
    Thoughts?
    Txs,
    Jeff

When I unplug the cable from the mac, the monitor does display this message:
    "No Display Port Cable"
So it does seem like the display knows that its connected to a mac, just nothing shows up. Don't get anything in System Prefs > Displays either.

  • MacBook pro powers on but with no display. What do I do?

Somebody please help! I press the power button and it dings but then nothing comes on the screen. I need to figure this out!

    Hi Jessica,
You may have the NVIDIA issue (but I don't know if it applies to your MBP as you don't say which one it is). If you can, first, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues. If you cannot see your display, I may be able to tell if you  have the 8600 GPU if you can tell me the year and CPU speed.  You can also just bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

  • Xbox or ps3 with thunderbolt display

I was thinking of making the following layout.
a macbook pro connected to the the thunderbolt display, then a promise pegasus connected to the back of the display.
then a xbox or ps3 connected via hdmi to the blackmagic intensity extreme and the intensity extreme connected to the promise pegasus.
will I be able to play my console on the display?
    best regards Rui Chen

Yes we're thinking the same. I've got a thunderbolt display connected to my 2011 mbp and I want to connect a blackmagic intensity extreme on the thunderbolt port on the back of the display. This should work since thunderbolt is bi-directional and all ports are in and out, and you can connect accessories/ devices anywhere on the chain with the exception of the displays which must be on the end. One major question I have is can we view the video feed with the blackmagic software full screen? All screen shots on the companies website indicate it will be ran in a window, I don't see a full screen button for the video anywhere on there...
