Hello, LeaseBL.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting the System Management Control to see if the fan noise ceases. Also, make sure there are no obstructions to the fan as well as the portable is on a flat surface when in use.

Retina Macbook Pro strange fan noise
Hi all, i just got my retina macbook pro 2 days ago, however when starting it up for the first time there was a strange noise coming from the computer (probably fans), it was like a blocked fan kicking in loudly but only for a few seconds. I figured that it was nothing but it came back when i used it today and i noticed that this sound is only present when the computer is warm. It only comes for a few seconds and then fades away, is this normal? I'll try to post a recording up here if i can.
I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro Retina . . . took it into my local Genius Bar, where a nice woman identified it as noise from one (or both?) of the fans. She took it apart, removed some debris (couldn't have been much, after a couple of months) and . . . the computer continues to make this annoying noise.
I believe this must be a serious design flaw on Apple's part, and that they don't know what to do about it.
We can hope that the noise is merely annoying, and not a danger sign. -
Hey guys,
I just purchased my new 15 inch mid-2012 MacBook Pro yesterday and am loving it so far. My only concearn is the fan noise. Are the fans supposed to run non-stop regardless of what you're doing? If so, is it normal to be able to hear the fans in a quiet room? It's not loud, just a little breeze.
ThanksNew computer.
Spotlight indexing can cause fans to rev up a bit. That is normal.

Brand new macbook pro retina - fan noise when running hola?
Hi everyone, I need some help here please!
I have a brand new macbook pro retina 13 - just bought in January this year - and have had no problems so far apart from the wifi dropping occassionally.
So I just downloaded hola unblocker for firefox but whenever I stream anything using it on netflix my fan starts whirring so loudly - it's never even made a noise before! and I can feel the base of the mac getting hotter. So I've closed hola/firefox and it stops after a minute or so. I've tried a few times again with the same problem.
I'm just using it to watch US netflix so probably not technically legal anyway.... but other friends manage it no bother - do mac's just know I'm doing something wrong? haha
Thanks for any advice.Try running Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder). Click the Energy button at the top and then stream a video. Watch the Energy Impact.
I suspect what you'll see is that your rMBP is doing a lot of work while you're streaming the video, and that makes it get hot. The fan struggles to dissipate the resulting heat in order to prevent damage and makes noise in the process.
It may also have a guilty conscience. -
New battery in Macbook Pro - louder fan.
Hardware Overview:
Model Identifier: MacBookPro 8.1 (2011)
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
I had a dead battery in my MacBook Pro replaced two days ago and since using my Mac with the replacement, whether on charge or not, the fans are a lot louder when watching videos or playing games than with the old battery/when the battery was dead.
Is it due to the new battery, the installation or do I need to reset something that I've missed? Thanks.Have you tried reset the System Management Controller (SMC)?

hi,
One week old 13inch Macbook pro first problem no usb ports working or sd card reader now sorted, but now I seem to have, what I think is a costant fan noise coming from the top left side,as soon as start up, so no load on the cpu what so ever, and this noise was not present for a week.

Macbook Pro loud vibration/noise
Hi!
Two days ago my macbook has started to do a loud vibration/noise like if te fan was stuck or something. The sound it's very hight and scary. I took my mac to a service center and after a couple of hours they check it and told me there was nothing wrong with my macbook. But today after using it for an hour the noise and vibration came back. I wasn't playing any games or watching videos just normal web surfing as I always do. I know that the noise and vibration aren't normal cause I've had my mac for two years and It's the first time this happens to me. Any ideas of what can be?Try a SMC reset:

I just bought a MacBook Pro 13" 249GB with Retina Display a few weeks ago. Before, I had the MBA (I took it in because one of the USB ports never worked). I am just a little concerned about the hotness. Sometimes it gets really hot and the fan kicks on to cool it off. The thing is, I'm just surfing the internet, not even doing that much of a laborious task. I understand that computers get hot and naturally cool themselves off, but this never happened this often with my MBA.
Yes, I will admit I do spend the nights/mornings on the bed, which isn't that great for the ventilation, but even when the Pro was on the desk the fan went on.
I just want to make sure that I don't have to take my Mac to be repaired again for a problem that was there from day 1.
Also, what would be some good programs to check the temperature? I downloaded IStatic Pro, but when I opened it I didn't see anything. (maybe because it was a widget??)First perform a SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
I recommend iStat menus as a temperature monitor:
http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When your MBP gets hot, open Activity Monitor and see what applications are being resource hungry and check what temperatures are being generated. You are welcome to report this information for evaluation.
Ciao. -
My fan seems to be very active lately and I was wondering if there is any way I can fix it. I copied the process from the activity monitor, it's in norwegian.

I just did it to my macbook pro and pushed out a rather large blob of dust. After you dust out your computer fan, (while the computer is off) go ahead and reset the SMC. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US).
This should do the trick. If not then try closing any open programs. Chances are, if you have a large amount of startup programs they are pulling a lot of resources from the machine making your CPU very hot making that fan work overtime.

Mac Pro loud fan noise after 2-3 hours
Hi. I bought a Mac Pro quad 2,66 with 5 Gb ram for about a year ago. Everything works well, but after 2-3 hours the Exhaust and CPU fan starts to raise and when checking iStat it stays at about 3000 rmp for Exhaust and CPU. The noise is bad...This happens even if the Mac is not in use (any programs running) The temperature inside the Mac is low - about 30 degrees (Celcius) and the fans do not slow down until i restart the Mac. I have tried the Reset of the SMC. There is no difference after resetting the SMC....
Any suggestions??I have been dealing with a Mac Pro for the past 6 months in my sound studio having a constant vacuum from the fan. I assumed this was normal and a purchasing oversight I made. It was far from silent, infact it was so loud it sounded (on recordings) like a car was constantly in the room idling. Very annoying.
I took apart the mac pro thinking there would be maybe dust (as people suggested) in my video card - as that appeared to be where the sound was coming from. I removed the card, and there wasn't really a build up of dust.
I did however put the card back into a slot (it was on the bottom slot closest to the ram - maybe it couldn't breath?) and turned it back on and for the first time since October 08 I have the computer I paid for and not an oversized noise box.
So there is obviously something dodgy about this ATI card Apple. Its actually really quite annoying and dealing with a nuscense noise for 6 months on a computer you drop thousands and thousands for is just ********. -
Yesterday, my macbooks fan all of a sudden started rattling and making lots of noise, just like in this video: http://youtu.be/IdQvf3WPKKA
Restarting the macbook didn't work as the noise would come right back.
I shut it off for the night, with the idea of trying to find a repair center today (my warranty is long gone). But now it doesn't make that noise any more.
I can still hear the fan rattling really silently.
How do I know if the fan is working properly and not overheating the laptop?
Do I have to replace the fan?Run Apple Hardware Test.

Late 2011 Macbook Pro loud fan at 30% cpu usage...
Im new to to MBP (about 2 a month and half now...) and its whisper quiet when idle or in the first hour ive started using it... but after writing papers or surfing for a few hours the fan kicks on and its surprisingly loud! My CPU isnt above 30%, and the case even gets pretty hot. Yesterday I swear it almost burned my lap within an hour of use it was so hot on the bottom!
Ive just never heard of the fan getting this loud or complaints about a hot case from fellow users. So im wondering if this is normal...
Ps. the fan doesnt sound like its rubbing or performing poorly, just at a very high speed. My old custom desktop pc had 8 x 80mm case fans and at time this is almost about the same volume!Project-Oscar wrote:

Mac Notebooks are not meant to be used on your lap. They need to be placed on a flat surface such as a desk to allow for proper ventilation. Also, define "hot" add the iStat widget to your dashboard and report back with what the temps are. Also, MBP's are known to run hot.. -
My 2008 Macbook Pro makes a loud fan noise.
Hello -
I bought my 15" macbook pro back in October 2008. I was very happy with my purchase due to the machine's performance. But over the past year I have noticed an increase in the fan noise. It almost sounds like it's hitting against something at a very high speed, hense this irregular fan noise. The noise also increases drastically when I am working on Photoshop or InDesign. I also partitioned my hard-drive to hold windows so I can work on AutoCad.....noise increases also as I work on my machine.
Why is this happening? Could this loud fan noise damage any internal component to the machine? Should I bring it in to Apple immediately?
Thank you! Some of the applications that you mention are somewhat CPU intensive which creates heat and results in fan speed increase and hence additional noise (to state the obvious). However if you are experiencing excessive noise when CPU loads are modest it could be that your fans are failing as all mechanical devices eventually will or you may have 'schmutz' inside that is the cause of the unwanted noise.
I suggest you open the MBP and see if there is any dust in the fans that may very well be affecting their performance. After 4 years, this is not an uncommon situation and it could be the solution to the problem.
If not, then you may consider getting replacements from iFixit or Powerbook Medic and replace them your self. It is not rocket science in this instance. If you suffer from chronic fingerfumbilitis, then have the Apple store do it for you.

Macbook pro retina start to make loud fan noise and work slow
I bought macbook pro retina display less than one years ago. For some reason my macbook pro has been making loud fan noise for about five mounth. Whenever macbook pro makes the noise, all the programs start to run slow. Typing, opening safari, and etc takes forever. It takes 20min to 40min for the noise to stop. At first, the macbook pro made noise once or twice in a day, but now it's making the noise frequently; It happens every 2-3 hours. It got to the point where it start to annoying me. Is there a way for me to fix this issue? If not, can I use one year warrenty to fix this problem? Thank you.
If your Mac works slowly when fans turn on, it's quite possible that there's a process which is eating the CPU and/or RAM.
Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select "All Processes" above "Show" (in the toolbar) and then, order the processes by CPU usage. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU or RAM? If so, tell us the name.
Additionally, you can reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 -
My Macbook Pro is 3 months old and recently it has been making quite a loud fan noise whenever i play music/video or even turning up the volume. I haven't been playing music/ video for ages. Is there any solution?
