Macbook pro low performance

I'd written about this topic earlier that my mbp had low performance. There were missing packages in library receipts and i moved the missing packages and it's performance immediately went to top. But 3 or 4 days before i noticed that its performance got low as before. I run xbench and the result was awful compared before. I took it to service and they told me that nothing is wrong with the hardware and software and reinstalled osx. But the result is low as the same. What should i do? Is anybody facing that kind of a problem. And the machine gives an error message 4SNS/1/40000000:TBOT what does it mean. Thank you for your replies

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
Low free space can cause two problems. First it can cause slow performance. It can also cause file corruption which in turn can cause more poor performance and other strange problems.

MacBook Pro poor performance in relation to NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

Hi All who may be having similar issues.
I am now on my third replacement custom Macbook Pro 2.66GHz with 7200rpm hardrive and 4Gb of ram, and yes am so peeved that this has happened again. I am aware of the article in the 'Inquirer' about the 'bad bumps' of the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT in these machines and realise it is not all but from the various postings and refurbished MacBook Pro's... quite a volume!
First off i also own an older powerPC imac 1.8GHz 2GB Ram and at my work use a 3.0GHz Mac Pro with 6Gb of Ram and a 2008 imac intel 2.4GHz with 4Gb of Ram. I am fully competent and primarily use for photographic programs such as capture one, photoshop, lightroom, Aperture and these new MacBook Pro modes has failed me in so many ways
I have read many threads regarding the possible reasons for why these cards are failing or at fault, and am encountering an attitude from apple that sees this problem as unique to me. Obviously not as from when i google or go into the discussion rooms
the issue?
make sure you are on the higher performance graphics card.
simple test.. take a screen grab( of anything in safari or even of the desktop) and press fn+F11 or however you configure your keypad to go to the desktop. you may notice nothing happens.. try again.. wait. you will see a delay and the commands follow when the computer catches up.
if all my other computers i use can do the easiest of tasks why can't this? seems incredible to me!
also after installing any of the above mentioned software and beginning processing raw files(in all the programs to make sure there was no software issue) the computer becomes very hot.. i get beach balling and regular crashes.. also the fact that my computers at work seem to work amazingly well with the above software versions. To add note, all machines have up to date apple software.
In the first machine i had it got so bad the dock disappeared and spaces crashed..the track pad froze and that was it. it took forever to start up and shut down.. it appeared to work on the lower performance setting intially but over time became buggy and crashed on that side too!
these last 2 models have behaved exactly the same... all the same custom configurations i have mentioned above.But i have recognised the problem straight off and asked apple for replacements.. i am now on the third and will call them tomorrow with the same issue. I just want a machine that works smoothly and reflects the price i have paid for it.
Has anyone else experiences this? any support or advice would be deeply appreciated.. i can't keep getting dodgy Shanghi custom models!!

I read your thread Nee Kun.. and thanks, yes that is the basics of my problem, but that is just a major signal that something is seriously wrong. The screen grab is the first test to see if a new MacBook Pro computer may have this underlying issue. what i found with my first 2 models was, this issue then developed into all the other issues i have described in my original post, so its not really the screen grab i am bothered about... however annoying it is.. but the fact that these machines over time on the higher performance graphics card become disfunctional and crash periodically say every 20 min of light photography retouching and processing then there is something that is fundamentally flawed in these over priced and under tested machines. i'm not a happy bunny.
However, I have been in discussions with apple and they are listening to my issue and we are trying to resolved it, but if not... it will have to be some form of compensation as i simply cannot do any high end work on these machines that a 3yr old powerbook, 5 yr power PC imac and all all the new range of imacs and mac pro's i have access to can! it is utterly bewildering!

MacBook Pro Lower Case cracks.

Since I opened my MacBook Pro without Retina-Display 2012, the Lower Case cracks, if I press the upper and lower Case together.
What can I do to solve this problem?
Should I solve the screws a bit or should I thighten those screws?

A new Mac is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.
You may have to take the computer to the Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider
to get it fixed under warranty.

Hi,
When I got my MBP in Dec 2010, it was very snappy running Snow Leopard.
My initial upgrade to Lion (Apple's version of MS Vista? LOL) had issues, I restored from Time Machine, but eventually got it installed. Almost immediately, the performance drastically reduced.
Eventually, I took it into Apple, they re-installed Lion from scratch (wiped the hard disk), and I did a partial restore from Time Machine. There's no guarantee I didn't regress some system files from my Time Machine backup.
The install of Mountain Lion was uneventful - the app store upgrade ran fine.
I was also getting a number of kernel panics, which were eventually isolated to (I think?) the GPU. Apple replaced the GPU under the Apple Care warrantee.
So, ever since moving off the original operating system, my MBP has had horrid performance. Some days worse than others, but lately very bad.
However, the timing could be a coincidence - I have also installed a number of third party tools (as we all do), and my HDD has 12GB out of 437GB left. At times it has had < 1GB before I copied files to an external USB drive. I don't deny my MBP could be bloated.
Sometimes when I close the laptop lid, then reopen it, the screen never recovers. 5 mins later the display is still black, and I have to cycle power. Sometimes just tabbing to a new text input field within Safari can take 30 seconds to move to the next field. Numerous other performance problems, I'm so sick of the spinning beach ball.
So, with that as background, some questions:
1) Any general advice on addressing poor performance under OS X 10.8.2?
2) Are there any *good quality* tools I can use to fix poor performance? I installed Mackeeper 2012 for about 10 minutes, before further web research convinced me to uninstall immediately. But I do like the concept, if a reputable company puts out a similar product. What about Clean My Mac???
3) Are there any tools available to test my hardware? I know Apple have them - that's how they detected the bad GPU. I'd like to run a full diagnostic check of my hardware.
(However, I also booted into Boot Camp. Windows 7 was very snappy, with the same hardware available to OS X. I suspect my problem is software related. Performance of the Boot Camp images under Parallels 8 is abysmal. Yes, I know a VM adds overhead, but Windows used to be just fine under Parallels.)
4) Or should I just take it to the Genius Bar under my Apple Care coverage? I've got 10 months left on the 3 year warrantee.
Any other advice more than welcome. Right now, I'm close to just wiping the disk and installing Windows 7 ;-). At this point, it really is unworkable, the performance is that bad. I really *want* to like my Mac and OS X, but lately I think "It Just Works" is just a bunch of marketing hype ;-).

1) Can I reinstall Mountain Lion from the recovery partition? I know I could with Lion; I assume the app store upgrade to Mountain Lion updates the recovery partition?
2) How do I run a hardware diagnostics on my HDD? Is there a utility that comes with Mountain Lion, or do I need to go to Apple?
3) Are there known apps that cause problems? I totally agree with your advice above - I should have thought of it lol - but it will be a PITA to implement. I can post a list of my apps if that will help. Note that the poor performance occurs even when few apps are actually active, and happens shortly after a restart.
4) How do I know what a TRUSTED app is? For example, I've got Chrome, but I've heard it has ahem "issues" on the Mac. But I don't know if that's the *cause* of the poor performance.
(Oops...ignore question #2, I'll search for how to do this...)
In short, if there is a way to shortcut these diagnostics, that would help. But yeah, I can see that what you suggest will probably what I end up doing ;-/

Comparing Macbook Pro's Performance to Imac

Apologies if this is asked all the time. Originally, I was on the market for a video/audio editing computer. I was looking at the 20 inch Imac. I was also planning to upgrade the video ram, so I could play a few games like Diablo, WoW, and Doom 3.
However, especially with audio recording, portability would be a huge plus. And even that, not only just audio recording, but everything involving a computer. Portability would really be great.
I am just wondering how you would compare the overall perforamnce of a Macbook Pro (specifically the lower model or the middle model) to the 20 inch imac. The Macbook Pro is significantly more expensive, and if its not much better than the Macbook, maybe i should save myself a ton of money and get that.
Lastly, are there any rumors on when it will be upgraded? I mean, info on when the new Macbook Pro's would come out? I have seen these for a while, and it seems like a new one would be coming out.
Lastly, another thing that scares me in this purchase is the number of problems people seem to have with their macbook pro's.

I really don't know if the iMac is faster than an MBP given that both have a similar configuration and processor speed. However, you can visit www.barefeats.com and take a look at the various benchmarks they do comparing hardware.
As for stuff posted in the Discussions keep in mind that 99 percent of posts are from users with a problem. For every one problem posted there are nine users who have no problems. What you see here is a highly skewed sampling that is not truly representative of the population of all users. I've seen users report that their Intel Mac is slower than their PowerPC Mac. In reality that's completely false. Often these comparisons are based on using old PowerPC apps that have to run in Rosetta on an Intel Mac. Rosetta emulation is about 30 percent slower than running the same application on a PowerPC. In other words they are comparing apples and oranges. I benchmarked my MBP against several PowerPC models (1 Ghz TiPB, 1.33 Ghz Quicksilver G4, and 1.5 Ghz AlPB.) The MBP was three to four times faster on average based on four different benchmarking applications.
I can't tell you when new MBPs or iMacs will appear. Only Apple knows that. Given the abounding rumors I suppose you could guess that new models may appear anytime between now and first quarter 2007, but that's pure speculation. And, Leopard (10.5) is also expected to be released in the early part of 2007.
As for buying now versus waiting. Technology changes so quickly that most computer makers bring out new models within months of releasing older models. If you keep waiting you will probably never buy anything. If you buy something today I have no doubt that a newer, better, faster, model will appear before your warranty expires. Computers and cars are not too different in this regard except that it takes a year before a newer car appears.
In any event you have to make your own decision.

MacBook Pro 15", performance, Aperture 1.1.x vs 1.5

Hello all,
thought I'd post some info about Aperture 1.5 on a MBP 15". I have seen many posts and ramblings about how the MBP 15" is somehow slow when using Aperture, especially compared to the 17" or other Intel machines.
My biggest gripes with Aperture 1.1.x have been, in order:
- It very quickly seems to force every other running application (and parts of the OS) to be paged out on disk, causing the system to be very, very slow even after quitting Aperture. Aperture itself also tended to get slower and slower the longer I used it, especially when using the fullscreen mode. Within 20 minutes of working with it it'd have slowed down to a crawl. And after quitting aperture, switching to - say - Safari would take upwards of half a minute, because things would have to be paged back into memory.
This is no longer a problem with 1.5. It's faster in general, and it STAYS THAT WAY! Yay!
- Rotating images, even ever so slightly, is very much slower than in iPhoto. No matter if I rotate a RAW or a JPG, no matter the size (within limits), and no matter if I rotate 5 degrees or 180 - iPhoto has always been a prime example of smoothness, even on old G3 and G4 computers (yes, I've made iPhoto 6 run on a G3, it's absolutely painless)!
This is still a problem, though it's become a lot better. What I cannot understand is why it should be that way -- why does it need to operate on the original file (I can't see any other explanation why it should be slower with RAW or large files) when rotating - before I've even released the mouse button?
Oh and another thing. It's useable on a MacBook now. Very much so. Thanks, Apple!

I have the same setup as you, with mainly 9 and 16MB
Nikon D2H and D200 RAW files, and would agree that
there is a marked improvement. Although, being
cautious I am only testing on a small 'copy' library
with 5000 images, before going full time 1.5.
I've got about ~30.000 images in my library. Took about 40 minutes to convert on the MacBook (not Pro), where the library resides on an external FW drive. Picture browsing etc. is markedly faster than before.
I allowed the preview generating process to run overnight. It's done now.
I am not looking forward to creating previews
for 300GB libraries, but should mean that I can stop
using Portfolio.
Enjoy. But it's not as hard as it sounds. And you can keep working while it generates previews (in the background).
PS: My performance "feeling" is from before previews were generated. Might get even better

Windows on Macbook Pro, Low connectivity

I have a Macbook Pro I just put windows on, and for some reason my connection to the wireless on my time capsule always says low or very low connectivity. I use it in the same places I did on the Mac side, and I always had a fine connection then. Has anybody else had this problem?

Mate, the ideal resolution is the one originally set. But as you've commented, the text gets too small to be readable. The configuration that I just set is 1440 x 900, and then I set the windows configurations to make things look smaller. This way it looks like an ordinary screen.
By the way, working on this configuration the graphics run a little bit smoother, and the animations are faster. The battery consumption apparently got better. This combination is perfect, and it looks better than Windows 8 (which does not provide you with any configurable resolution that may compare to that on Windows 7).

Did you MacBook Pro Retina performance improve significantly with Mavericks 10.9.5?

My MacBook Pro Retina (Early 2013) is one of the unfortunate ones that suffered from extreme scroll lag and performance slowdowns.
Beginning day one, I've had to employ workarounds such as using gfxCardStatus to force Discrete mode or to use a non-HiDPI resolution to reduce the symptoms.
To my surprise, when I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.5, nearly all my issues have been resolved. I'm back using high resolution modes without a single bit of slowdown. Scroll lag is also minimal or entirely gone. The last issue I have is with the Applications dock folder and the 'folder' viewing mode still producing severe lag, but I can live with that as I use Alfred to launch my applications anyway.
Has anybody seen noticeable improvements like me? I queried others on MacRumors, but didn't get much feedback.

Adobe Application Manager was the culprit. For some reason with the XI install, Adobe Application Manager would not launch. I was able to resolve by deleting all
~/Library/Preferences/ associated with older versions of Adobe and by cleaning out ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat

MacBook Pro Slow Performance, Difficulty Multitasking

Hello, everyone. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a mid-2012 Intel MacBook Pro that is very important to me. Typically, I'll have a couple of Safari windows, Mail, Evernote, Excel, Word, Calendar, Contacts, and Acrobat running at the same time on 3-4 desktops. This has been typical of my usage since I bought the computer.
For the last few months, I've noticed that it is having difficulty switching between these tasks. The gestures to switch the task on the display work fine, but I often get the working ball icon for a significant time before I can continue work in the new application. This sometimes lasts up to a minute, but is usually 10 seconds or so. I haven't noticed that a particular application causes this more than any other, and since I first noticed it, I've installed 2 or 3 different OS versions. I also ran an AHT with no results.
Anyway, since I can't point to anything other than my perception of slower performance, I figured I'd post my EtreCheck results to fish for suggestions. Does anything below look out of whack? Any suggestions for changes to improve performance?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Snow Leopard and Macbook Pro Battery Performance

I recently installed Snow Leopard on my 2007 Macbook Pro and now, the battery is completely shot.
It tells me that I need to service the battery and if it is not plugged into the mains, it loses power almost immediately.
Is this a common problem or am I a one off?
Really need to get this sorted.

New MacBook Pro FCPX performance

This is what I'm dealing with at the moment... The following 2 minutes has taken the best part of an hour to render!!
That clip at the top is an optimised 1080p 50p clip which I then colour-corrected (hence why it needs re-rendering), the second line is 4 separate JPEG images (~500k each) with cross dissolves in between, and a static background JPEG (~1 MB) at the bottom. The video image is a very small insert at the top right of the frame, with the 4 JPEG images displaying like a slideshow at the bottom left of the frame.
The media is on an external FW800 7200rpm 1TB drive (80% free space), the laptop has 8GB of RAM (and ~4GB free during rendering), there are no other programs open, there is ~25% free disk space on computer hard drive (7200rpm 500GB), and the processor sits around 100% during rendering ...
Any idea why this would be taking so devastatingly long to render?

MacBook Pro Airport Performance

As discussed in two threads on the iMac Core Duo forum, the Airport implementation in the iMac seems to be hurting. Apple knows about this and there is a P1 level bug report filed. This means that it must be fixed before the next release.

There may be more than one problem, but the one described results in 3 easy to detect symptoms
1) download rates are about 57% of what one would expect
2) "ping" shows 6 good pings followed by 4 bad ones, then repeats
3) the network graph in Activity Monitor shows a "sawtooth" response when transferring large files. The sawthooth has a 10 second period (which cooresponds to the ping results)

Some folks say that their systems are working fine, others have serious troubles. If some work fine, then it isn't software. There may be a batch of "bad" ones out there (of which I apparantly have one). If the vote comes back mixed, it is probabably a hardware issue that doesn't impact every piece of hardware. If the vote is consistent, then it could be either hardware or softare.

Mine works fine, and I actually am getting slightly BETTER throughput. No packetloss (which is likely the cause of your throughput issues).
I'm using a Linksys WRT54G with the OpenWRT firmware and my MBP.

Macbook Pro 17" performance

Anyone got performance feedback for a MBPro 17" fully RAM'd?
Im thinking of upgrading and would appreciate a full user report...from a working pro if possible...(photographer that is)..lol

I have a big assignment in July so it will be tough to tough it out but I can see I SHOULD hold out.
Maybe they will tweak the screen resolution as well...from what I read, a lot of pro's need the extra pixel space(video pro's) Your point about going over +2 on the RAM option seems to be valid as well from all the feedback I read. Another HD option is unlikely I imagine but would be GREAT! as I take an external HD with me everywhere.
From reading ALL the posts in this forum its not hard to tell what most people want for a 'pro' system...(thats you apple techs)
I also would hope Apple should now lash out and make an absolute world beater fully spec'd model option, with all the bucks they make on music..even if their accountants say they will not sell many.
I will never get a desktop unit as I can only afford one unit/setup and as I am mainly a location and destination photographer I need maximum leverage on the road. Also I have realised that post production is now SOoooo much a big part of modern photography, you really need to get a start on a job before you come back to base and do as much as possible on the road..even if you are exhausted. ( oh for the old days when you just put dots on trannies and sent them off)

MacBook Pro - Sudden performance drop in Windows via boot camp

Hi all!
I am the owner of MBP 2.4 - 8600m gt - 4gb I was using it for around one year with no problem but and from some time I have noticed a big drop of the performance...
On the boot camp I have COD4 which was running smoothly with 80-125fps but now it is barely 30fps with the same configuration... same story with games like TF2 and L4D..
What I have tried after this drop:
* format C: and getting fresh system
* different graphic drivers
* playing with directx settings
* checking the power management
* reset PRAM, SMC
* Apple Hardware Test
* playing without battery
* tuning fun speed
nothing helped...!
I was reading that those MBP have problems with bugged GeForce
( * Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
* No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on) but mine MBP is not having any of those...
I was also looking online for similar problems and I have found those topic touching same issue with the same model of MBP...:

For starters, using a different graphics driver and playing with DirectX settings may make things worse. In general... for any notebook, you should be using the driver from the manufacturer. Unlike desktop graphics cards, notebook GPUs are generally configured specifically for the machine they are used in.
Playing without the battery will result in SIGNIFICANTLY poorer performance. The system will drop your CPU speed nearly in half when running without the battery. This is by design.
Doing a clean install is the one thing that you did that I would think would resolve the problem if it were related to Windows. After you did the clean install, did you just use the Apple provided drivers?
As you mentioned, the problems with some of the nVidia GPUs have generally not resulted in performance issues... but rather stability issues which you do not seem to be having.
Do you have antivirus software installed? I'm not suggesting a virus, but rather many antivirus programs are set to perform scans automatically in the background which can have a significant impact on performance while the scan is running. Other things such as defragging, etc. can cause performance hits.
You can launch the Task Manager... click on the "Processes" tab... then click on the "CPU" heading. This will sort your active processes with the highest on top. If you click on the CPU heading and the first few are "0"... click on the heading again (it is probably showing in ascending order instead of descending order). What are the first few items taking up the greatest percentage of your CPU? They may fluctuate a little... but the biggest culprits should stay among the top few.
