MacBook Pro - Mac OS v10.6.8 Formatting hard drive
Hi,
I'm desperately confused (totally technologically illiterate which doesn't help!). I've just purchased a 4tb seagate expansion external harddrive and a kaiser baas HD Media Hub that I want to be able to put movies onto (off of my mac) and watch on my TV. I have figured out how to put the movies onto the hard drive but when I turn the media hub on they are not available.
I have been advised to partition the hard drive as the hub will support a maximum of 2gb (I have since partitioned my Volume Scheme to 3 partitions).
Then I was advised:-
"Another thing is, if the hard drive is formatted for a MAC computer, media hub ca not recognize it . You need to reformat that to FAT 32.
Please follow this :
Do a backup first to avoid losing contents of the hard drive when you format it
Go to 'Disk Utility' application
Select 'Erase' tab
Click the 'Volume' dropdown and select 'MSDOS'
Click Erase"
and this is where I get confused. I can open the Disk Utility application and select 'Erase' but I have no 'Volume' dropdown. Instead I have a 'Format' dropdown which offers:
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Mac OS Extended
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)
exFAT
When I queried this I was told that when I pressed the Erase button the 'Volume' would appear in that window, but all I get is a message telling me am I aware that Erase will erase the disk.
Obviously I'm missing something but I just can't figure it out. I'd really appreciate anyone's guidance with this.

If you open Disk Utility, select the Media HB, and go to the Erase tab, how is it formatted now? Look at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
Mac OS usually works best with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), not a DOS format. The screen shot show what I see in Disk Utility.

I had a repair done on my MacBook Pro and had to have a new hard drive installed. The Apple Auth Repair Shop then updated the OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. Now my iPhoto v 9.2.3 will not open and it sounds like it will not work with this OS. Can you please advise?
You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. -

What is the maximum size of hard drive and speed for an internal hard drive to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2009), please?
I bought myself a Technics 1TB, 7200 rpm internal hardrive. Made a clone successfully in Super Duper.
It fits, but It is not available for starting up my Macbook Pro. Not available in System Prefs, but visible and grey in Disc Utility.
Although it starts up my Mac Pro just fine.. but not my Macbook Pro.
Is there a limit of hard drive specifics?

I cloned the Technics HDD ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) from the MBP.
I tried to boot it up with my Technincs ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) installed in my MBP (as my internal hard drive). -

The Macbook has Mac OS X 10.6.8 (500g hard drive)The MacBook's hard drive lacks the necessary hardware drivers to boot the MacBook Pro even though it has a much newer OS on it; that's why simply moving it into the Pro doesn't work. Presumably you have a very old MB Pro, because only the very first MB Pro model (produced January to May 2006) was ever offered with an 80GB hard drive. Are you sure you want to move your big drive into such an old machine? The MacBook must be newer, because the first MacBook was introduced just as the first Pro model was discontinued.

NatI was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!

iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved (i.e. the movies) in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive. you may also want to point iTunes media folder location back to your local iTunes folder.

no. airport express does not support the airdisk feature. you'd need an airport extreme (or time capsule) for that. -

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard. -
MacBook pro does not recognize my WD external hard drive anymore
I use TIme Machine on my WD external hard drive. Everything was working great up until about a month ago. My MacBook Pro does not recognize my external hard drive anymore...I have done nothing differently than usual. I did search in previous discussions and tried rebooting both the hard drive and the computer.
The USB port is fine as it does recognize another external hard drive and also pen drives....Please help! I haven't backed up in a month and need to figure out how to get this to work soon. Should I call WD?Does the WD drive show in Disk Utility?
Many times, a USB port simply cannot provide the power a hard drive needs. It is not uncommon for any electric motor to draw more power as it ages. A drive that worked before can stop working when it gets older because age has made it tak more power than any USB port can supply. There are a couple of cheap things to try:
1) A "Y" USB cable---two plugs go to the computer and one to hte drive, giving a power boost.
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
2) a POWERED USB hub. That takes the power delivery burden off the USB port so it can deal with data.
WD bare drives are fine but their enclosures are not very Mac-friendly. One thing that has reported helping is to get rid of the proprietary formating that WD puts on their drives. If you don't have to share the drive with a Windows computer, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the drive to Macintosh Extended Journaled. -

I've looked around for a solution to my problem but I haven't found any specific solutions and I'm not comfortable in trying general ones for fear of loosing my data. Before moving I backed up all my document and music files from my PC to my Touro external hard drive. My main goal for buying this hard drive was to use it to store my itunes music library to save space on my computer and transfer my music from said PC tp my new MacBook Pro after the move. Today I set about doing so and was able to set my itunes up to pulll from the hard drive as well as load all the music I had saved on the hard drive into my MacBook itunes. The trouble came when I tried to download new purchases. It turned out I couldn't because itunes was unable to save them in the new file location on the Touro. I checked into it and I have the same problem with the documents as well; I can open anything already saved on the drive but I can't save any new files. It keeps on telling me I don't have permission to make edits. I'm afraid this mean I have to reformat the Touro for Mac but doesn't that mean I'll lose all that data? Does anyone know of any somlutions that would give me access to the drive without compromising what's already on it? I would just plug it back into the PC and see if I could adjust sharing settings, but it's all the way across the country now. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

-G-It sounds like your HDD was formatted under windows NTFS, which although your mac can read, it cannot write to that file format.
You will either need to transfer the data to another location while you reformat it as FAT on your mac using Disk Utility. Or you could purchase something like iPartition and change the file format to FAT which might take up to 24hours or so depending on the size of the drive. I have never had a problem doing this before but it's not guaranteed that your data will not be lost doing this. -

I recently purchased a macbook pro 13" and it has started to make clicking noises every now and again (but it doesn't beep). The mac is also starting to freeze for about 5-10secs and then returning to normal.
The hard drive inside the macbook pro is a 160GB model.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how i can solve it?

MacBook Pro running Lion constantly spins up external hard drives while sleeping
My MacBook Pro 8,2 running Lion 10.7.2 constantly spins up its external hard drives (one Firewire 800 and two USB) while sleeping. Is there any way to prevent this? The drives will spin down for a minute or so and then spin back up, which is incredibly annoying. Have to shut the computer down to prevent this.

2009 17" Macbook Pro fans running at max speed aafter hard drive upgrade.
I recently picked up a 17" 2009 unibody MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM, SuperDrive and a Samsung 1TB hard drive. The system did not come with the original hard drive and I don't have any other hard drives to test and verify that the new larger hard drive is the cause. I have tried a clean install of Snow Leopard, Lion and even Mountain Lion but no matter what my fans always running at max speed (5k+ RPM). I have looked at iStat and the temps of any of the components in the machine never show more than 42*C so the fans should never be running at full blast. Oddly enough smcFanControl shows 0* temp but fan speds for both left and right are always 5.5k+ and very noisy. Using HDD Fan Control I am able to get at least the right fan to run at a controlable speed but its silence is drowned out by the left fan that still runs on full blast. I have already done multiple SMC resets and PRAM resets with no change in the condition. These noisey fans are driving me insane! I have run every available update as well. Is there a chance that the hard drive or something elses temp not being supported or detectable by OSX is causing the fans to default to the fail safe constant high speed?!

Well your just a regular pirate. There is no Mountain Lion disks, it's not even out of Beta and avaialble to the public yet
We thought you were just mistaken but now your tech handy enough to boot a Mac off a Linux live USB, so that means you've been bad and downloaded MT Lion off a P2P network or something.
If your beta testing 10.8 your bound to secrecy and not allowed to be discussing it and posting this sort of question on this forum, but the other one.
If you know anything, OS X must "talk" to the hardware or else the default setting is to race the fans. Linux doesn't do this by default as it's designed for generic PC's which a Mac may appear to be one it's not really. Apple only supports OS X and Windows 7 on Mac's, not Linux.
Obviously something on your machine is SEVERLY messed up in hardware, likely a dead sensor, you bought a used lemon that someone didn't want to pay to get fixed.

I am a Macbook user, but I plan to purchase a Macbook Pro since I am now doing a lot of HD (not HDV) video editing. I live outside of the U.S. and cannot call the Apple Store, so was wondering if anyone can provide advice on the forum.
I'm interested in either the 15-inch: 2.53GHz or 15-inch: 2.66GHz. is there a big difference in speed between these?
-Is the 4GB memory the MBP comes with enough for HD video editing purposes, or would I opt for the 8GB? (here prices becomes a bit of an issue)
- Is the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm sufficient or would I upgrade to the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [Add $50.00]

Thank you all so much for your help!!I looked at the 15inch and 17inch but chose the 17inch - and I am a filmmaker. I too travel on location extensively and usually carry a 15inch due to size-weight - but the 17inch is much better for HD. The video card and screen resolution in the 17inch is much better than than the 15inch but what clinched it for me was the 17inch has a CF reader and the 15inch only has a small SD card reader.
Most video HD cams are shooting straight to CF cards now.
I also upgraded to the 7200 rpm drive - a wise choice for $50 extra.
Yes 4G ram will run Final Cut OK - but if you go from FCP to motion a lot then you will need 8G. -

And when I try to repair the disk it say it cant be repaired, and i need to back up files and reformat. All my backups are on the hard drive. How do I back up the back if I cant get it recognized? Uggghhhhh I have several years of info on the hard drive .. PLEASE HELP!!!
