Macbook pro magsafe power adapter - cord melted

Has anyone had the cord on their power adapter burn or melt through? I've had my Macbook Pro for 3+ years and taken great care of it. I experienced the battery bulge issues and has two batteries replaced under AppleCare. I came home yesterday to find this:

Any ideas?
I realize I'm outside of my AppleCare now but I still find this alarming.
Thanks.

I would take MBP & Magsafe to your local Apple Store or AASP. Otherwise, see the following KB Articles;

  • Macbook Pro Magsafe Power Adapter

    Hi,
I recently have bought a new Macbook Pro 13". Will using its charger (model no. A1344) to charge my white Macbook (late-2006 model) damage it? The white Macbook's charger is no longer functioning and I didn't buy a new one… Do you recommend buying a new charger for white Macbook? I just don't wanna end up with a new laptop and a damaged charger..
    Thanks...

Power adapters for Intel-based Apple portables are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple portable, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. Using an adapter of higher wattage than the adapter that came with the computer will not cause the computer to charge more quickly or otherwise operate any differently than using the adapter that came with the computer.

  • Macbook Pro Magsafe Power Adapter is very hot. I never noticed this before. Is this normal?

Has anyone experienced this? Is it normal to have this adapter soooo  hot?!

    Warm to touch is normal.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro: Which power adapter?

Hello all. I have a Late 2008 Macbook Pro 15", MacPro5,1. A few months back my dog ate the power adapter (unplugged, thankfully.) I thought I did the proper amount of research to order the correct adapter from a third party on Amazon, because I'm pretty darn broke and need to save every penny I can. When I got the adapter, the connector was different from the one that came with my Macbook Pro. It was 85W, all the numbers matched up, but the style was different. But, the plug worked enough to let me get the work done that I needed, so it didn't concern me too much.
That is, until this cord just stopped working. That's what I get for getting a third party cable from China off Amazon.
So now, I'm trying to research again to make sure I'm getting the right cable, and I want one that's made by Apple, and is exactly like the one that came in the box when I bought my Macbook Pro new. I went to MacSales.com and checked their compatibility pages, and ran into some issues. What is showing as compatible with my Mac is the 85W Magsafe MC556LL/A, but this is shown with the incorrect connector (like the one I got off Amazon.)
When I looked at the other adapters that were available, I found the MagSafe 2 85W MD506LL/A, which has a connector that looks like the original, but it only shows as compatible with 2012+ Retina Display Macbook Pros.
So, do I have to buy the MagSafe that is not like the original that came with my Macbook Pro, or can I get the MagSafe 2 that does match what I got out of the box?
    Reference pages from MacSales.com:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MC556LLA/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MD506LLA/

Thanks! I didn't realize there was a revision, but that makes sense. I guess I don't understand they would change it, then use the original design for the later Retina Display models. Oh well, as long as it works!
On a similar note, is OWC the best option for a cheap Apple-brand adapter? They're selling them for $47, when the cheapest I can find anywhere else is like $75. They seem pretty reputable with all the options and Apple-specific stuff they offer, I just didn't want to make the same mistake again and would like other options if they are available.
    Thanks again!

  • MacBook Pro 17" power adapter lights orange when NOT plugged into laptop.

My MacBook Pro power adapter lights up orange even though it is not plugged into a device. When I do plug it into my laptop it remains the same and does not charge. Due to this my laptop is now dead. What does this orange light mean?

You should take both your MBP(Macbook Pro) and your power adapter to an Apple Genius bar or an AASP(Authorized Apple Service Provider) for a free evaluation. This is a strange occurance, and it seems that it may be a hardware malfunction.
Make an appointment so you don't have to wait too long.

  • Use macbook pro on power adapter or on battery?

Is it recommended to use my macbook pro with the power adapter plugged in or using the battery? how does it affect the battery?

http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html.  i keep it plugged in most of the time.  i use it on battery only when i need to, or at least 1-2 times a month.

  • MacBook Pro using power adapter but not charging.

My MacBook Pro is plugged in w/the power adapter, the green charging light is on, but my battery percentage is only showing 15% and is not increasing.  It was actually at 60% this afternoon...went to 22% and now is @ 15%.

Could be bad battery or faulty charger or faulty charging circuitry. Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • Macbook pro 15' power adapter not working

When I was using macbook pro 15' early 2008 this morning, the power adapter suddenly did not work. The led light on the power adapter blanked and the status bar showed that I was using the battery. I am sure about the power adapter is fine cause I try it on another macbook pro and it works well. I have tried to take off the battery and the power adapter for 30 secs and then press the power button. But it does nothing good. I have tried to press the option + command + "R" + "P" and power button to reset PRAM. But the problem is still there. Now I have run out my battery what should I do ?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It sounds like the power board inside the MacBook Pro has failed, best get it to an authorised repair centre.

  • Macbook Pro 13" power adapter

I bought my Macbook pro 13" from someone around Christmastime last year (who bought it only a few months prior) and it works great. However, my power adapter is dying and my AppleCare and warranty are up. It's very finicky and only works about 10% of the time anymore. It's the newer model of adapters that are round and thinner than the old flat rectagular adapters. Could I buy the older model for my Macbook and it'd still work? Or do I have to buy another newer model adapter?
    Thanks!

I recommend getting the one designed for the unit to ensure long-time reliability.

  • 2ghz intel core duo macbook pro 15 power adapter

What is the model number for the correct power adapter for this laptop?
Which models will work? There are 60w and 85w.

The 85 W model is for 15" MBPs. Either of the two listed on Apple's Online Store will work.

  • New Macbook Pro Penryn Power Adapter Whine/Buzz

    Hi all,
While I was using my new 15.4" 2.4Ghz MBP Penryn last night I heard a high pitched whine coming from the area. I tracked it down to the power adapter that was plugged into the wall. I tried it on several different outlets in my house and heard the same amount of whine.
Interestingly, that if I have the adapter plugged into the wall, it doesnt have to be plugged in to the MBP to hear the whine. This is reassuring as it doesnt appear to be anything from the MBP causing this.
Has anyone else heard this type of whine from a apple power adapter?
    Jeff

I do not know if we are talking about the same thing, but I wanted to at least add my situation to the thread to help others in narrowing down the issue. I am experiencing a strange buzzing issue right out of the gate with my new 2.5Ghz MBP. It is on the right side and is a constant low pitched buzzing that sounds either like a fan or hard drive. The best analogy to a sound would have to be the noise a loose wire, on a home audio system for example, sounds when not properly connected. This noise is pretty annoying in a quite environment and not something I could say sounds appropriate. I have never heard such a consistent noise in the in the nine years I have been using apple notebooks.
I called apple care today and they said it is increased fan speed due to the smaller chips and higher processor speed, which is total bs considering I just had a 2.4Ghz MBP. I am slightly irked by the fact that customer support would come up with pretty pathetic explanation such as that and obviously bothered by this noise even more.

  • I need help identifying which Magsafe Power Adapter I need for my Macbook Pro Model A1398, EMC 2673?

I need help identifying which Magsafe Power Adapter I need for my Macbook Pro Model A1398, EMC 2673?

Provided the computer-end fits, you are free to use one with a HIGHER Wattage rating. No damage whatsoever will be done to any component, but it will likely run cooler (but may be slightly heavier).
If you use one with too LOW a Wattage rating, you will not be able to charge and run at the same time, and your computer's top speed (for its most intensive computations) will be limited.

there are only 2 statistical probabilities of both charger blocks (NOT the cord as you report) going at the same time.
and what "goes" is one of the 2 capacitors inside them.
A: bad power on your outlet (more likely)
B; also likely is a defective IO board in your macbook causing the charger blocks to go kaput

  • 60W MagSafe Power Adapter no longer working?

    Hi,
I have the 2009 MacBook Pro and I recently have been having trouble with my MagSafe Power Adapter. I checked if it was just the cord that wasn't working properly, so I switched out the adapter and put in the extension cord instead, same issue. Then I checked to see if it was my battery in my MacBook and used a different charger, this one charged it. I checked with another MacBook and it didn't charge it as well. Anyone know if Apple Care takes care of this or I actually have Best Buy's Geek Squad coverage would this cover it?
If anyone knows anyway to fix it it'd be greatly appreaciated because I don't want to buy the new MagSafe Power Adapter with the weird silver handle because in my experience those don't hold in as well as the old ones.

Occasionally, the adapter does die out, so you've done everything to test it out, indicating it is gone. If you have the standard warranty, then you have a year from purchase, or three years if you purchased the extended AppleCare. I'm sure if you take it down to your local Apple store (bring your laptop with you), they'll diagnose it. And they probably have replacement adapters in stock.
Don't know anything about the Best Buy thing. Given the strength of Apple's warranty and service, you may have overspent for their coverage.
