Your optical drive is broke.  Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

Time for a trip to the Apple store genius bar.  I suspect that your MBP is still under warranty, so use it to your advantage.

  • Macbook Pro Retina - Weird sound when plug in adaptor

    Hi,
I have had my Macbook Pro Retina 15inch now for about a year and a half and suddenly it's making a sound whenever I plug it in. It's like the sound of a hard drive, but it's in sync with when I scroll up and down. There's no sound whenever it's unplugged, it's very strange. Any ideas, could it be a faulty adaptor?
    Thanks
    Lewis

It is better to take the computer to the Apple store and have it checked out.
If this does not help, contact Apple.

  • 17in Macbook pro making funny sound.

I have a 4 month old macbook pro and when I move it at any time sometimes it will make a funny tinking sound. It sounds like it is coming from the upper left hand side of the keyboard. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it. It doesnt seem like it is phasing its performance at all but I figured id catch it before it got worse or something happened.

It's strange that they did repairs that are apparently unrelated to the reason you brought it in-I wonder if they ran a hardware test or if a work order got mixed up. This sounds more like a repair for something else.
At any rate, you can try a SMC reset to see if that fixes the keyboard or sleep problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
You could also try running SMART Utility to see if it sees any hard drive problems:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
However, if you hear the tink when the machine is turned off, it sounds like some sort of mechanical issue rather than something specifically associated with hard drive failure. Possibly it is just some characteristic of the machine itself and not indicative of anything. If so, the AASP should have been able to tell why it was doing that and explained it to you.
Might not hurt to run the extended version of the AHT just to check out the repairs and make sure all is really well with it.
    Good luck!

  • Brand new i5 Macbook Pro making "clunking" sounds with any sort of movement

I bought a brand new 15" Macbook Pro with a core i5 processor a few months ago. While it is the first Mac I have owned after a lifetime of owning and building PC's, I love it to death.
Anyways, anytime there is any sort of movement, say, if I'm moving from my desk to the couch and I pick the laptop up, it makes a clunking noise which to me sounds exactly like a failing hard drive. The difference is that it only clunks once or twice during the movement, and then stops once I stop moving the laptop. This happens even if I move the laptop very carefully.
My girlfriend has had her 13" macbook for years, and it does not do this.
It doesn't seem to affect my performance (yet), but i'm wondering, is this normal? Is this maybe the warning sign of a hard drive that could be failing prematurely?

it is the sudden motion sensor and what you hear is correct it comes from your drive . when the accelorometer detects certain G's it shuts the drive which makes the drive head park suddenly and the " clunk " you hear is the drive head parking . while it's perfectly ok ( you can not hurt your drive by parking it ) it might get boring after a while if you move it around too much .. you can go ahead and disable your sudden motion sensor at the cost of risking damage when your machine absorbs some proper shock . your choice .. if you google disable sms in google you will get the code to do it if you ever wish to do so
mine is disabled for good but then I am using an SSD

  • My MacBook Pro internal speakers sound like they are playing through the headphone jack, why is this? How can I fix it?

Periodically, the sound from my MacBook Pro speakers cuts out to where it sounds as if I am just blasting music through a pair of headphones.  The start up sounds and even some normal sounds coming from my computer are at the regular balanced speaker level.  I sometimes use external speakers and have not had this problem with them.  This has been happening more and more lately, and for longer periods of time. I'm running 10.7.5

What frame rate/frame size/codec did you record?
How did you transfer it into FCX?

  • Macbook air making a sound like hdd

    Hi,
    Recently I bought a macbook air 2014.
My previous laptop was a pro 2010. I upgraded the pro in 2012 with an ssd which was really nice. I came to the conclusion ssd's do not make any noise.
The air also has an ssd, so there should be no sound or noise. But my air does make a sound like there's a disk in it that is thinking when I open a program. It's just like a HDD but the sound is very soft. The sound is there when I work in a silent space. It is located underneath the IOPJKL buttons. It's like the air is 'thinking' like an HDD when I open a program.
We have an other air laptop here, from 2012, which does not make any sound at all. Does this mean there is a loose component or is it just a chip 'thinking'?
I'm not worried, because I need to pay attention to hear it, but it does not seem normal to me?
    Thank you!

Could somebody please help me with my question? I would appreciate it!

  • I have a  2011 Macbook Pro and it sounds like a jet engine or fans loud as crazy. What is the reason for this? Also I upgraded the Ram to 16GB from 4GB. I use a lot of video editing software and also run the Elgato capture device. Thank you.

Can somebody please help me with this problem. Thanks.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.
    Ciao.

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • My iphone 4 started making a sound like "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does it at least once a day.  I've reset my phone, used icloud to restore, and it made the sound again upon startup.  Help!  This is so annoying.

My iphone 4 started making a sound like a "boing" with a vibration/ wobbly sound.  It does this at least once a day.  It started about a month ago.  Anyone got any ideas?

Mine does this also, seemingly randomly several times throughout the day.  I do not have this sound as any of my alerts and it does not seem to denote anything like a message, reminder, etc.  I do have "Trapster" on my phone and I went in and tweaked the settings there.  Will repost if that has any efect.

  • MacBook Pro has no sound at all. Called Apple and they said to reinstall OS X.

I have recently discovered that my MacBook Pro has no sound except for the startup chime. I called Apple and they told me to reinstall OS X because something went wrong in the OS. Is there any other way to fix this?

That's a really overly simplistic answer to your problem. Re-installing OS X doesn't always fix every problem. Yes, it might in your case, but it might not. Are you still under warranty? Either way, I'd take it into your local Apple Store and show them the problem and let them fix it. If the system has to be installed anew, so be it. But rule out other problems first.
Before you do anything, make sure that you have a back-up of your data, applications, etc. If you don't already have a back-up scheme, get an external hard drive and use Time Machine to back up your computer. Then take it into the Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
