Macbook Pro March Revision - How To

I am looking to upgrade the memory in my macbook pro that currently has 4gigs. I heard that there was a revision in March 09 and those macbooks could get 8 gigs. I don't recall when I purchased mine, and I have had a logic board replaced since then was well. Is there a way to tell in the Profiler if the macbook is indeed the March revision?
Matt

i agree with Niel here. I had a friend who i helped do a memory swap on. You can only upgrade to 6GB.

Well then when you erased your hard drive, your erased the Recovery partition, also.
Use Internet Recovery to either restore from your Time Machine backup or reinstall the OS if you don't have a TM Backup.
It will install the OS that shipped on that Mac. You can then upgrade via the App Store.

  • Macbook Pro Caps Lock. how to relieve? i cant small caps letter use?

Macbook Pro Caps Lock. how to relieve? i cant small caps letter use?

I think I have a different problem, but it shares some similar features.
I just got my MBP back from repair for a dead trackpad/keyboard.
Things work mostly peachy now, but I noticed that the caps lock feature doesn't work. The caps lock light does come on on both my built-in and external keyboards, but neither produces CAPS when used.
Searching for this topic on the 'net is difficult nowadays due to a different issue on the new MBP swamping most older discussions.
In any case, the feature itself is gone-the hardware seems to be working properly. It even gives me the little caps lock warning if I press the caps lock key on the login screen. However, no capital letters are ever produced with them.
    Strange.

  • I have 1 GB RAM on an '07 MacBook Pro. 1) How do I check remaining memory? 2) I have Microsoft office 2004 - do I need to buy more RAM to upgrade to '11? 3) I need a new battery ... Is it worth the $$ to buy a new battery, RAM and Microsoft office 2011?

I have a MacBook Pro from '07 with 1 GB of memory. The battery is shot and my AppleCare has run out. I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.8. But a few questions:
1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11 because I can generate pdf's from Word. Roughly how much RAM does Office '11 take up?
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
ANY help would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
If you're asking how to check to see if you need more RAM, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory tab, then compare page outs and page ins.  If page outs is 10% or more of page ins, you probably need more RAM.
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
There's no limit on the number of battery cycles, it's just that the more cycles you've used the more "worn out" your battery gets.  You've got a 4-year-old machine, and if it's still got the original battery, it's probably about time for a replacement battery.  You can check battery health using System Profiler...  look at the Power section under Hardware.
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11
You don't need Office 2011 to create PDFs.  Any application capable of printing can create PDFs on a Mac.  Just choose File -> Print, but instead of clicking the Print button in the print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save As PDF in the menu that appears.
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
I'll "ditto" sig's answers to these.
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
If Office 2004 is still working fine for you, stick with that and don't incur the costs of Office 2011.  As to the RAM, only add more if the test I mentioned above indicates that you need it.  If you buy more RAM when you don't really need it, you won't see much (if any) performance improvement.  That just leaves the battery...  and if the machine is still doing what you need it to do and you don't really need a new machine for anything, you could definitely buy a new battery and get a few more years out of it.

  • Get the Dell EVDO Express Card working on a Macbook Pro - here's how

    I found this here:
    http://svenontech.com/2006/06/11/get-ev-do-access-on-your-macbook-pro-now-from-v erizon-via-your-xv6700/
On the Mac side, you’ll first need to pair your XV6700 and Mac to each other. You should be able to do this easily, but if you need some help, check out Apple’s site for direct documentation on how to do this. When pairing, select “Other” device from the list, not “Phone”.
Once paired, the last screen will ask if you wish to use the device as a modem and headset. Uncheck headset (unless you wish to use your phone to communicate with others on applications such as Skype.) Now follow these instructions for setting up the modem:
Username: (Your full phone number) [email protected]
    Password: vzw
    Phone Number: #777
Mode Script: au cdmaOne Bluetooth Adapter
    Leave all check boxes checked
    Click CONTINUE
    Click QUIT
You’re now all set on the Mac side. You’ll now see a phone with a dot slash icon on your menu bar. Select it and choose “Connect”. Remember to have your XV6700 on, Bluetooth enabled, and the WMmodem application running Bluetooth mode with the START button activated. If all this is the case, you’ll be connected in seconds and your modem icon will display a counter next to it once connected. Enjoy the EV-DO!
Can someone verify that this works? I have a Dell Card on order.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    David,
    Thanks for the response.
Before I read this I went to the apple store and tried some BT file transfers to another Mac and experienced the same results. I then went to the Sony store and tested it on a XP laptop and experienced the same speeds. I am able to achieve twice that rate when doing mac to mac BT transfere. I know my MBP has BT 2.0, but I didn't think my first generation Mini was 2.0.
I am able to sync via USB with Mark/Space's Missingsync, but it doesn't appear that they support DUN. I will email them, to see if they will consider it.
I just bought my 6700, so I still have the choice to return it. I am not sure if I should get another device that currently supports EVDO DUN via USB or suck it up and hope someone makes a usb dun driver for the 6700.
    Thanks again.
    Ben

  • Hi.  how do I change the phone number on Messages on my macbook pro?, Hi.  how do I change the phone number on Messages on my macbook pro?

Hey how do I change the phone # for my Macbook pro for messaging?

    Hi crupperdk!
This behavior is activated by having your Apple ID used in iMessage on a phone. Here is an article with more information about this:
    iOS: Using Messages
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529
How can I use my iPhone telephone number with iMessage on my iPad, iPod touch, or Messages for Mac?
You can link your iPhone telephone number to your Apple ID for use on your iPad, iPod touch, or Messages for Mac by signing into iMessage with your Apple ID in Settings > Messages. Then sign in to the other device with the same Apple ID in these locations:
iPad and iPod touch: sign in to iMessage in Settings > Messages.
Messages for Mac: sign in to iMessage in Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
Linking your iPhone telephone number with iMessage is not available for the iPad (1st generation) and iPod touch (3rd generation).
Follow these steps for more information or if you are experiencing difficulties linking your iPhone telephone number to your Apple ID.
If an unknown device registers with your Apple ID and you did not initiate that registration, you can reset your Apple ID password to remove it. You will then need to enter this new password on all devices using iMessage or FaceTime.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Braden

I have a macbook pro 17".  I love the big screen, but how can I change the display?  The content takes about half of the screen and the fonts are very small.  I am sure it is an easy fix, so please clue me in.  Thanks

  • Detect displays seems to have quit working? The secondary monitor is bleeding into the MacBook Pro monitor. How can I fix this?

I am using a MacBook Pro 2009, Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8). All of a sudden last night after a long day of work, my monitor resolution changed without warning and the secondary monitor display started bleeding into my laptop monitor. When I go to detect displays, it doesn't fix the problem. It looks like I need to switch to a larger display setting and the largest setting has disappeared.(The display seems to default to this setting where my screen bleeds into the laptop monitor.) When this started happening last night, I immediately shutdown and restarted to see if this would fix the problem. So far, it's still not looking too good.
I also tried shutting the laptop and using the external monitor only. When I do this, the monitor freaks out and keeps flashing on long enough for me to input a password. Then it flashes off, the computer and dipslay goes to sleep and I have to re enter my password to exit sleep mode and the process starts all over again.
Here are screen shots of the two monitors side by side:
    http://danisco.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/monitors.png
(Notice the weird overlap - it's not keeping me from working, but it's super annoying!)
Any ideas on how I can try and fix this? OR do I need to get help from Apple directly. Thank you in advance for any suggestions on this!

Okay - this issue seems to have resolved on it's own. Yea!
I did find a thread that suggested resetting the PRAM/NVRAM so I did this, restored the external monitor to factory settings and went into Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions and verified disk permissions.
Here is a link to reset the PRAM/NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
These things may have helped resolve this issue. I can't tell what worked because it was hours after I did all these things that my monitor and computer decided they liked each other again. If you have a similar issue, maybe these steps will help you resolve your problem too.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • How do you permanently delete apps from all your mac products (MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone), how do you permanently delete apps from all your mac products (MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone)

how do you permanently delete apps from all your mac products (MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone)

They are not taking up storage space.  Apple knows you installed them at one time (="purchased", whether you paid money or not), and merely keeps a list so that if you wish to reinstall any of them on this or a future device, you can.  This is useful if maybe you deleted them due to space constraints, and now have a device with more memory and wish to reinstall.
It's also useful for taking a trip down Memory Lane looking at all the useless apps you installed once then immediately deleted once you realized they were total garbage ...

  • MacBook Pro to TV-- how well does it work?

The recent announcement of tv.com CBS's streaming of old TV shows (90210, Star Trek, MacGiver, etc.) for the iPhone got me thinking about how to connect the MBP to a TV.
I've found out that there's a $19 adapter (hmm... should look again at how long the cable is), which is peanuts for trying this, but I'm wondering how well it work.
Any comments? We have an old 20" JVC tube TV and a 20" Zenith LCD TV, neither high-def, neither digital, both take RCA composite cables, so I assume that's how I'll hook up the video/sound.
But, am I going to get audio/video glitches, poor streaming (ISP dependent no doubt), restarts, etc.? Or does it generally work OK?
Note: this is a duplicate post. It was pointed out that this was the better place to post this message!

There are two factors here. The speed of the computer, and the speed of the Internet. You already acknowledged that Internet speed is ISP dependent, and that's true.
I have no problem watching standard definition even off of a slow DSL. However, frame rates are rather stuttery if I use my old G4 PowerBook. If I'm using my MacBook Pro, the experience is good enough that you forget you're watching the Internet (don't forget to click the Full Screen button).
Things change if I click the HD button on the site. This seems to be bandwidth dependent. My home DSL can't keep up, and it stutters. If you want to watch in HD you should have a nice fast cable or fiber connection. The MacBook Pro should have no problem playing back HD streaming if the Internet can feed it fast enough.
The TV connection part is not a problem. Even the old G4 can do it. Video is routed via DVI>HDMI to the TV, while audio is routed from the laptop into my stereo for nice sound.
TV sites are very dependent on Flash and JavaScript, and are very aggressive about making sure you see the ads embedded in the shows. The more you use ad blockers etc. like Firefox's NoScript or AdBlock, the more chance a TV site will not work right.
