  • Triple Screen with Macbook Pro 13" integrated graphics vs 15" dedicated graphics?

Am I gonna be able to run games with triple screen setups on the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics or is it gonna be umplayable if I don't buy the 15" macbook pro AMD dedicated graphics?
The game I'll playing the most is world of warcraft, my future setup will be 3 screens of 19" each conected to the macbook pro with a resolution of 1400X900 each, using the matrox adapter.
I cannot buy an imac because i need the laptop for the university and programing outside the house

If you plan on doing any gaming, get a discrete GPU.  An on-board likely will give you less-that-satisfactory performance.

  • My Apple Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite freezes 10.10.1 regularly. When it freezes the only remedy is to physical shut the screen. I don't use any external devices.

My Apple Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite freezes 10.10.1 regularly. When it freezes the only remedy is to physical shut the screen and wait for the battery to run down. I do not run any external devices, and when it freezes you cannot do anything with the computer. It is new, and this problem is very frustrating. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • MacBook Pro started running slow and freezing up

    Hi,
What are some things I can do when my MacBook Pro starts running slow and freezing up?  For example, windows are slow to open, and that pinwheel thing keeps spinning.  Clean up tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    tamyc,
    You can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller;
    You can try booting into Safe mode, to see whether it runs just as slowly (and freezes up) then;
    You can try disabling your antivirus software, to see if that makes a difference;
You can download, install, and run EtreCheck, and include in your reply the output from an EtreCheck run, which might help identify software which should be uninstalled or updated.

  • Macbook Pro 15" mid 2012 system freezing

My Macbook is out of warranty fyi
My macbook pro mid 2012 is freezing so that I have to do a hard restart. When I first got it I put ram that was the wrong speed in it, so it was messed up for a while and froze a lot. Now I have 16GB ram that is right for it that is passing the tests I put it to. I reinstalled Mavericks about 3 weeks ago and it's been working fine, except now it's freezing when I play Borderlands 2 through Steam(lowest settings). Not just the game, but the entire computer. Any idea what this could be? Or is it hardware related and should I start looking to sell it and get a new computer? Thanks for any help you can give.
What I've Tried So Far (in order, kind of):
    1. Changed the ram to 8GB 1333mhz - computer started freezing after that
    2. Took it to the Apple store to get it checked out - they told me it was the ram
    3. I changed the ram back to 4GB 1600mhz - froze worse than before
    4. Bought and put in 16GB 1600mhz - ran fine for a time, then started again
    5. Took it back to the Apple store - Didn't reproduce the results
    6. Uninstalled all games - didn't change anything
    7. Reinstalled OS X Mavericks - Ran fine for a little while, now freezing during games again.
    8. Ran Apple Hardware Test multiple times during all this, it would start and then freeze around 8 minutes in.
    9. Booted in Internet Recovery mode - froze every time and gives me error code -3404D now, which I can't find any information about online.
    10. Ran MemTest through Rember multiple times. Before reinstalling OS X it froze every time, now my ram passes every time.
    11. Checked Activity Monitor, and ran EtreCheck - I'll post the results below, but everything seems normal to me.
    12. Checked memory usage while playing Borderlands 2 (windowed, lowest settings still) the game was using about 1GB of ram, then my computer froze after playing for about 2 minutes.
    13. Also I've taken my ram out and cleaned everything, including fans multiple times throughout this ordeal. My computer would get pretty hot at one point, and I thought it was overheating and maybe disconnecting some solder, so I used to turn it on its side and put a fan on it to cool it down and it would finally restart, but that was before reinstalling OS X and it hasn't been getting that hot recently.
    14. Reset the NVRAM - not sure if this has helped, it hasn't crashed since

    Hi Fonden,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If the crashing or hanging persists, you may want to double-check the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:

  • Macbook Pro (15" mid 2012) system freezing problems

I've had quite an ordeal with my Macbook Pro over the last few years, so this will be a lengthy question, sorry in advance. Let me get right to it.
    Backstory:
I bought my MBP 15" new in summer of 2012. I installed 8GB ram that I had laying around. A week or so later I was playing a game (Borderlands) and my computer froze and I was forced to do a hard reset. From then on the computer started completely freezing more and more consistently, and not just with games, but while I was on the internet and in other programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. and I was forced to do hard restarts often.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion when it came out, and the problem persisted. The freezing got to the point where the screen would pixelate and get full of artifacts and blocks of glitchy colors while the sound started looping and popping until I did the hard restart. I took the computer into the apple store and they ran some tests and told me that the 8GB of ram I had put in was the wrong speed for my computer, but that as long as I changed it I shouldn't have any problems. I went home, changed my ram back to the original ram that came with my computer, and lo and behold, it got worse. it started to freeze on startup and I would have to try multiple times before it would start up, sometimes it would give me the three beeps, so I knew it was a memory problem. So I bought 16GB of the correct type of ram (1600mhz instead of the 1333mhz) and the problem seemed to stop for a few weeks. Then it started again, slow at first and then in waves where it would freeze multiple times in a row and then not at all for days or even weeks. So i took the ram out and cleaned it, thinking that it might be the ram slots acting up or a bad connection, that wasn't it. I took it back into the store to be tested, but they couldn't reproduce the freezing I had, which is just my luck..soon after that my warranty ran out, so I was on my own. I started to just deal with it because it started happening less often. Finally at the end of this summer I reinstalled OS X Mavericks because I read somewhere that someone was having a similar problem and that fixed it. I did a clean reinstall and it started running great. I started reinstalling the main programs I use (Adobe CS6, Steam, a few games, firefox, VLC, ZBrush) and it was still working fine. I played Borderlands 1 on it and it froze the entire computer soon after I started playing. I thought that might just be because that game is a port and I bought it through the Appstore. So I took it easy and the computer did well. Then I started playing Borderlands 2 (on the lowest settings to be safe) and the computer worked great, even though I played for 3 or 4 hours at a time. I thought all was well now. That was until I came back to school and then last night my computer started freezing again. It is not as bad as before, and I've only been able to reproduce it consistently while playing Borderlands 2, but it bothers me that my computer is not solid, even if it doesn't freeze doing most other things.
If I thought it would be fine if I stopped playing games on it, then I would stop and be fine with that, but I think the problem is bigger than that, and that is why I am asking for help.
What I've Tried So Far (in order, kind of):
    1. Changed the ram to 8GB 1333mhz - computer started freezing after that

EtreCheck Results as of right now:

Let me end by saying thank you in advance. I take pretty great care of this computer (besides mistakenly installing the wrong ram) and physically it is in great condition. I appreciate any help.

    Hi Fonden,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If the crashing or hanging persists, you may want to double-check the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • Macbook Pro AHT Failure (graphics chip)

Im a bit confused. I ran the Apple hardware test on my 15" macbook pro (10 months old) before taking it if for repair as the superdrive was failing (not from over use). I was surprised to see that it had failed with 4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController as the error.
I told the genius guy about the error and they said they would look at that as well. I received a phone call to say that the drive was fixed but no mention of the hardware failure. After asking about the failure I was told that they ran their more advanced test and it had passed but he couldnt explain why it failed on the test I ran. He then asked if I had experienced any graphics issues. All I could think on was when playing Warcraft the fan fires up and the game would freeze randomly and you cant touch the bottom of the case as it would almost burn you. The guy just said oh sounds its over heating but the chip passed our test and so wouldnt do anything about it.
Now I dont know it the chip is faulty or not. Under diagnostics the only test that is showing is the one I ran. I have also just run the test and it still says its failed.
    Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    *PCIe Lane Width: x1*
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0407
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 3212
As you can see the PCIe width is now showing as x1 when it used to be x16. Anyone any ideas - do I go back to apple or just assume all is ok.

The "PCle Lane Width: x1" rather than "x16" was cited in another thread as a possible early indication of the impending failure of the 8600M GT chip.
I am puzzled that their test didn't show anything, but I am wondering if they might have run it when your Mac was cold. Sometimes things have to warm up before a problem will show up. I once came to the Apple Store 30 minutes early just so I could let my ibook run the 20 minutes it had to before its freezing problem would manifest itself. Maybe you need to play Warcraft for a while and get your Mac nice and hot and let them run their test then.
Did you show them the PCLe Lane Width? I don't see how they could say the chip was OK with this obvious anomaly.
Just to talk to someone else, you might try calling Apple on the phone with your persistent error code and the PCLe Lane Width anomaly. I have heard that you can get a pretty quick turnaround when you send it off, and people seem to be generally happier with the quality of the work that is done.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro Late 2008 Graphics Recall Issue

Hello.  When I purchased my 15-inch Late 2008 MacBook Pro I remember something about Apple having a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT Graphics Chipset, and there was a Recall or Repair Plan in place to resolve the issues.
Since 2008 I've been having very infrequent graphics issues with the MacBook Pro, and thought nothing of it as sometimes Mac's will freeze up or have strange issues.  Now for the last few months, the Graphics issues have been occurring on a regular/daily basis.  After reading many forum posts I have determined that the issue has been due to the Graphics Drive/Chipset all along, as everything else I've tried has not resolved the issue.
Can someone direct me to the appropriate Apple info so I may, hopefully, have the NVIDIA Graphics replaced or repaired.  I've been unable to locate info on the Apple Support site.
    - Cheers

Call  your local Apple Store and ask. I don't see that it's still active: Exchange + Repair Extension Programs - Apple Support.

  • Macbook pro late 2008 graphics

Does the Macbook Pro late 2008 automatically switch to the Nividia 9600m( high performance) graphics chip when you plug in an external display? I thinking about buying a Macbook pro that the display freezes on startup and I think it might be the display chip. Don't know how to switch over chips in this condition.

Call  your local Apple Store and ask. I don't see that it's still active: Exchange + Repair Extension Programs - Apple Support.

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

Check to see if you've any panic logs -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546.
If so, post the text of the latest.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post the contents of the Terminal window.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.

  • MacBook Pro 15-Inch (Mid 2010) Freezes

I have been having this problem with my MacBook Pro for a while now.
When I have my Apple Cinema Display connected to my MacBook Pro I sometimes experience freezing. The screen will freeze and the computer becomes unresponsive. The only thing that I can do is to hold the power off button and turn off and back on the machine.
When the screen freezes it does not change colour to grey or blue, it remains still, displaying what was on the screen before the freeze.
I did look at the trouble shooting and it was suggested that I download the MacBook Pro EFI Update 1.9, however when trying to install, it says the update is incompatible.
Please let me know what can be done to resolve this issue.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Make sure that you have the correct model. For this firmware update your MBP must have a core i5 or i7 processor. If you have a core 2 Duo processor this update is not appropriate.
Assuming you do have the right model for the update it might be worthwhile running Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and to Verify Disk. If in the Verify Disk there are errors you will need to restart after you have inserted the original installation Disk holding the C key until the grey Apple logo appears or the Choose your language screen appears. Choose the language & on the next screen choose DU from the Utilities menu, then Repair disk.
If you do have the correct computer to apply this update and there are no errors shown by DU it might be best to download the update again being careful to select correctly and try again. If there is still a problem I would go back to the Apple Dealer and ask for their advice. The computer is still under warranty. If you don't already have it I recommend buying the extended Applecare warranty before the 1st 12 months is up.

  • Macbook Pro has a tendency to freeze up when not level

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro, running OS X 10.8.2. I've encountered somewhat of a unique problem that I haven't been able to find a solution to:
    Apparent Problem:
When my Macbook is tilted (e.g. sitting on my lap, on an unlevel surface, etc.), it has a tendency to freeze up. Normally I keep it on my desk, but as soon as I put it on my lap it has a tendency to freeze up until I place it back on a level surface, at which point it resumes behaving normally.
    Solutions I've Tried:
I've verified the HD and the permissions, and everything comes up okay. I've tried resetting the PRAM, as well, out of desparation for a solution. I do back up my HD frequently, just in case.
    Potentially Pertinent Background Information:
My problems started about a month ago when my battery started to go bad. Whenever I unplugged my Macbook, it would begin to freeze for a couple minutes, then unfreeze for a bit, then freeze again. This would occur fairly frequently, until being plugged back in, at which point it would behave normally. However if I closed the lid (putting it to sleep), then unplugged it, and then opened the lid, it operated fine without the frequent freezing. I attributed this to a bad battery (it said "replace soon"). So I had the battery replaced at the Apple store, and that seemed to fix the problem.
Then I encountered a problem in which the Apple menu bar items (e.g. Battery Icon, Date, Clock, Volume, Spotlight, etc.) froze up, giving me the spinning beach ball when hovering over them. This issue was resolved by deleting the preference file for the menu bar, and restarting.
This issue was shortly followed by the Quick Look function only displaying the the right quarter of each file I looked at. This was also resolved by deleting the preference file for Quick Look, and restarting.
Once that issue was resolved I happened to notice the latest one, which I cannot find any solution to. I would very much like to think these issues are coincidences, but their succession and timing have me worried.
If anyone can offer solutions to try, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

My first thought is the sudden motion sensor is acting abnormal.

You could try as a test disabling or knocking down the sensitivity to see if there is a change in behavior.
Running the AHT may give you some generic System Sensor error but not definitive by any means.

  • Macbook Pro and ATI Graphics crashes in Windows Vista and 7

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone else had been having problems with Windows 7 and Vista having graphics driver crashes. I have been having this problem since the Boot Camp beta, and it has yet to be addressed as far as I can tell.
Basically the problem is that after a few minutes in either Vista or 7(after installing all the boot camp drivers from the Leopard or Snow Leopard disc) the screen graphics will start getting all corrupted. Eventually I will get a message in the taskbar telling me that the ATI driver has crashed and recovered from an error.
I have looked everywhere online I can think of for an answer, but have come up pretty empty thus far. The only thing I remember finding that was a possibility a long time ago was something to do with trying it with 1 stick of ram installed rather than 2, or that my ram could be problematic.
I tried running with just 1 stick, and that didn't help at all. I also tried each stick individually also with no change. I even went as far as running a diagnostic using some kind of memory testing software to see if the ram was bad, but it came back as good.
Also, I have run in XP without any issues whatsoever, so I am assuming it is something Vista and 7 specific. I was thinking it might have something to do with the Aero features as when I disable the ATI driver and run in Windows Basic without Aero enabled, I don't get the graphics glitches. Another clue might be that when the graphics glitch up, if I bring up the ctrlaltdel screen which gives you the option of Task Manager, Log Off, etc. the graphics are NOT glitched on that screen. As soon as you exit that screen however, the glitched screen is immediately back.
Bah, I am at pretty much the end of my sanity trying to figure this out, and was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the older MacBook Pro or is mine just inherently bad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my system info just for extra help possibly?
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.5f10
    ATI Radeon X1600:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x71c5
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-086
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.086

Just an added update for anyone interested. I believe I have finally figured out what the issue is.
Apparently, at least on this model of MacBook, Apple has the ATI card underclocked to 310MHz / 278MHz (GPU and RAM respectively) when running normally. However, when running in Windows the ATI driver automatically uses the full clock speed of 470MHz / 470MHz (or something to that effect). The reason that it ends up getting artifacts and driver crashes is because of overheating. Apple has it underclocked because of the way heat is distributed in the system.
Anyway, I found a tool that KIND of works for fixing the issue I believe. It is called ATITool, and allows you to change the clock speed to the 310MHz / 278MHz that works so well in OS X.
    It is located at: http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/
One thing though, the newest version 0.27 beta 3 (on mine at least) causes the backlight of the screen to go off when you load it in Windows. If you put the machine into hibernate, then bring it back up it will come back on... but that is annoying. I have found that the version 0.25 beta 13 doesn't have this issue. It is possible some of the other versions prior to 0.27 beta 3 also don't have this issue, but I haven't tested them yet. I will give some of them a try later.
The previous versions can be found here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Tweaking/ATITool/
Anyway, if anyone else has luck with other clock speeds or knows of any other solutions please let me know. This way works, but I would like to find a better solution if possible.
