Macbook Pro Mid 2012 15" Retina - Display blackout on restart.

I am having a major issue with my 15" Retina MacBook Pro (mid 2012). When I shutdown the Macbook, and boot it again later, it is not showing anything on screen.. Even the grey screen on bootup.. Completely black.. I can hear the startup chime, and a bit later, keyboard backlight turns on, which is indicating that the boot process is completed.. But no display.. Even for 15-20 min.. I cant even access Bootcamp and Apple Hardware test.. (Even if they are available, I can't see them on screen.. Fully black.. And I can't know where to click on what, in that darkness..)
But one small thing I found was, when the keyboard lights up, I just closed the lid.. It then goes to sleep.. Again opened it.. I found the screen working normal, after a small flashing of Blue screen.. I'm thinking that this problem occurs only at startup, but not at sleep.. This is not a solution, but a temporary remedy..
Can anybody help me over this issue..??

Hey SreeHarsha Vardhan,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like you are having trouble with the screen on your Macbook. If you are not getting anything on the screen, take a look at this article.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 no retina performance drop after efi

Hi, mi macbook pro mid 2012 no retina after efi update the performance are too slow, thats is the same problem with retina, please fix it, in osx mountain lyon the aplications that used every daywith video is poor, in bootcamp with games is the same problem, the cpu clock drops from3.3 ghz to 1.2 ghz or more. Waiting for a mew efi update bescause my mac is the same that a macbook air

No Apple hasn't officially stated anything about this issue. After I updated to EFI Update 2.0 I noticed the issues and started doing my research and found people in the Macrumors forums having the same problems and eventually I was reading that users that didn't update yet weren't seeing the update in their updates meaning Apple pulled the update from the servers. Other users reported after calling Applecare that they were aware of the issue.

  • HT204384 SD Card will not mount on Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (non-retina), tried everything

I am trying to use a PNY 4GB SD Card on my Macbook Pro Mid-2012 (non-retina), but I cannot get it to mount or for the Macbook to even see it's there.  I read some people had success slightly pulling it out, pushing it in faster, cleaning the port, etc. which I have tried all of these, but to no avail.
    Anybody have an idea?
    Thanks,
    -Justin B.

Had problems reading SD cards after a Mountain Lion update. Try this XQuartz solution that fixed this for me. I'm using a 13" MBP mid-2012. All you have to do is install this programme and re-insert your SD card.
XQuartz no longer comes with new Macbooks, only X11.
See this support page from Apple on where you can download XQuartz.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5293?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You can download Xquartz directly from here:
    http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
This should be the most up to date version. If not check for updates once you have downloaded it.
Simply re-insert your SD card and voila!

  • MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display and SSD upgrade?

Looking to upgrade to a SSD in my MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display. Are there ones that work better in a MacBook Pro?

In theory at least, any SSD will work fine. There are some additional considerations to make, however. It mostly revolves around updating the drive's firmware. Many SSD companies do not offer Mac-friendly ways to perform this procedure. From the list Clinton provided, you can drop Corsair and Samsung immediately for this reason.
I would not consider OWC, Intel, or any SSD that uses a Sandforce chipset because of spotty reliability. Yes, improvements have been made, but I still do not trust them. Of the dozens of SSDs I've owned and deployed over the last 2-3 years, the only ones to need replacement were ones with Sandforce.
That leaves Crucial, Plextor, and OCZ. The former two basically use the same Marvell chipset. While I can't speak for Plextor, Crucial's firmware updates are OS agnostic. You simply down an .iso file, burn it to CD, boot from that disc, and perform the update. It works perfectly on a Mac. Doing a quick check of Plextor's support site, it seems the proedure is the same.
For OCZ, I'm only focusing on the Vector and Vertex 4. The former is brand new, having just hit the market within the last couple weeks. If you're looking to buy right now, I would stick with the Vertex 4 as it's a more proven commodity. OCZ has created a suite of tools that you copy to a USB flash drive. You can boot from it, and it takes you to what I think is a very heavily modified Linux distribution. From there, you can do a firmware update, check drive health, and perform a SATA secure erase to return the drive to its "out of the box" state. To get the most from the tools, you should have a USB mouse plugged in. Also, firmware updates require the use of a hard-wired Ethernet cable; you can't use wireless.
Bottom line - for an SSD upgrade, stick with Crucial, Plextor, or OCZ as they are the most Mac-friendly (aside from original Apple parts, of course).

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 non retina goes ramdomly into sleep mode

    Hello people,
I bought a macbook pro non retina mid 2012 and everything was going fine until I installed Mountain Lion OS X. From this moment, my macbook is going into a random sleep mode. It is important to notice, that I cannot see any pattern, it can happens even when I am typing something and when it happens the screen goes black suddenly and it takes some seconds to return. When I was living in Germany last year, I called apple support two times. I installed the mountain lion update the first time as they recommended and the second time I reseted the SMC settings. They said to me that if it didn't work, I should reinstall the operational system before going to an apple store. Thing is that in the meantime I returned to my home country Brazil, where we still don't have a physical apple store and unfortunately the problem was not solved when I reinstalled the operational system. I don't know what to do next. I am afraid that since there is no apple store in Brazil, I just lost the chance to exchange it for a new one... Any suggestion that I didn't try would be welcome.

So, nobody can give me a suggestion? I am disappointed. When I googled for this problem I saw some people facing a similar problem, but their solution they offered didn't help me.

  • As of 2015: Best SSD for 9,2 Macbook Pro (mid-2012 non Retina)

Hi All, this is my first post in the community, so I apologize ahead of time if it is evident in my query.
I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina. Model ID: MacBookPro9,2.(i7, 2.9 GHz)
My question is: as of today (April 2015) what is the best SSD available (around 500GB in size) for my specific laptop? I've searched quite a few communities and just around Google and have found numerous options that people swear by and the same options that people swear against. What's been difficult is a lot of the posts were created much earlier on (which is expected for a MBP from 2012). I have read good (and bad) things about Samsung 840, 850 pro, 850 evo; as well as hearing good things about Crucial's M4, Mx100, Mx200. My preference is to spend approximately $200 for a 500GB unless there is clear evidence that I need to splurge on an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro because the Samsung/Crucial drives will just cause me trouble.
If anyone can lead me to the SSD's that Apple themselves use, I would be much appreciative. As of now, I'm not even sure which Controller they utilize (Marvell?) and if they support TRIM. Any information to shed some light on this would be great as a lot of my knowledge has purely been from the articles I've been reading in the past few days.
I know this question has been asked over and over again; but again, I am asking it to try and find the best SSD as of late.
    Thanks ahead of time!

"I thought the non Retina MBPs were still connected via a SATA connection. "
That is correct and that is why I was recommending that people buy that 2012 MBP non Retina that Apple was selling until just recently. Having the SATA connection while slower than PCIe allowed you more flexibility in purchasing upgraded drives.
"I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina"
So you bought one of these? Be aware that if you modify the laptop in any way your warranty will be void unless the work is done by an Apple approved tech if Apple becomes aware of it.
That said you could put a 480 SSD from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
That can be had for $229 currently.
I'd be wary of installing a Samsung in there because of problems like this:
Samsung 850 EVO in Early '11 MBP
A lot of people are running that drive just fine but now and then....
I've installed 6 OWC SSDs in various Macs and have had 0 problems and 0 hassles formatting and installing them.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2012 Non Retina. SSD/HARDRIVE

Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 384 MB/
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
    500gb sata disk
My question is that i was thinking about upgrading my my hadrive to an ssd, im not sure how to go about it, also my my memory to 16gb. any suggestions on what hardware i can use in my computer?

    Go to the OWC website.  Any of these SATA drives will be compatible with your MBP.  Other options can be found with other vendors, but this is a good place to start;;

    Ciao.
16 GB RAM is the maximum that your MBP will accept.

  • My non retina macbook pro mid 2012 will read the display its connected to but does not display anything at all

    Hi there,
I have a macbook pro mid 2012 non retina display and i tried using an external display for it. I hooked it up and the screen blacked out and turned back on like normal and the computer itself was reading that the display was there. The only problem is that on the display itself there is no image of the macbook being displayed. im using a thunderbolt to vga connector and all the connection check out the only problem is the display. the display works on my other macbook that i have just fine i dont understand why it wouldnt work on this new one. Keep in mind i have had this computer for only 5 days.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi, cubingcouple.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your MacBook is not working with your external display. display shows a blank screen.  Here is the best troubleshooting resource to go through when experiencing these symptoms.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 15" (non-retina) graphics tearing

    Hello everyone,
I would like to post my experiences using two identical macbook pros 2012 (non-retina, with nVidia GT650M 512MB) who presented the same graphics cards glitches and problems, and hopefully to obtain some information.
Exhibit 1: My own macbook pro
Bought from France, in November 2012. Used mainly for professional non-graphics programming, it's clean, no bloated software, and only necessary professional tools are installed. 16Gbytes of memory, by Crucial.
At some point during July, when the machine was relatively cold and I was watching a youtube video, this happened (see attached pics). The mouse was moving, and the computer was fully operational, but with this "glitchy graphics overlay". I logged out, and logged back in. Problem disappeared and appeared again at random times, 4 times during an hour. All those times, a log-out and log-in would fix the problem. After that, I could not reproduce it. Apple changed the motherboard, claiming that it could be a faulty nVidia card.
Exhibit 2: My brother's macbook pro
Bought from Greece, in february 2013. Same model as my own, same RAM, same specs. Used for professional video editing, no bloated software, mostly using Final Cut Pro X. He noticed various malfunctions with FCPX, like freezing when applying a visual effect, and graphics tearing when rendering (that's when the nVidia card kicks in, normally). Yesterday, same symptoms as my macbook pro appeared, graphics tearing, etc.
    EDIT: videos of the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGBijGMO9NE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnEXtVWgKKM
Both machines are in a completely different environment (I live in France, my brother in Greece), non-smoking areas, and have worked in completely different ways. Both with OS X 10.8.4.
That's two out of two. Given nVidia's background, I am starting to feel that my purchase is not so reliable as I originally thought, and I am thinking that this problem is more generic than originally seemed.
Does anyone have any relevant information on this matter? Could these problems be related to issues with nVidia drivers? Is there any information about unreliable nVidia graphics cards on 15 inch macbook pros mid-2012 (non-retina)?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2012 15" - one RAM slot gone bad

    Hi,
Has anyone ever had the issue with not working RAM slot? My MacBook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina) suddenly froze and after restart was beeping three times every few seconds. I found out that the beeping signals bad RAM. Bought new chips, and the problem still exists. My mac can now run on one slot with 4GB RAM.
I did check the placement of the chips in the slots, i also checked one slot at a time, and one of them has gone broken.
Any ideas on how to make it run again? or if it is possible to replace the slots?
    Brgds

The Apple-accepted cure for a dead RAM slot is a new logic board. Unless you ahve AppleCare, that will be an expensive fix.
An Apple service option is the "depot repair." Instead of working on your computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a centralized refurbishment facility where they fix anything they find wrong (except for cosmetic damage and damage from abuse like dropping) for a flat fee of a little over US$300. That is between 30 and 40 percent of the parts and labor charges if Apple installs a new board in an Apple Store. Sometimes they will install an new battery at the depot without increasing the flat fee.
The downside is that it takes about a week; for that level of cost savings, I could do without my computer for a week.
So take it to Apple and ask about a depot repair.
A low-tech and low-cost option is to expand on what you are doing now--using one slot. Although the official RAM limit on your model is 8GB RAM (two 4GB models), your model can actually handle a total of 16GB (two 8GB modules. You can ignore the dead slot and put an 8GB module in the good slot. My 2012 MBP has 8GB RAM and is completely happy running Mavericks.
Be sure to ONLY get the RAM from an Mac-savvy vendor. For over a decade I've bought all our Mac RAM from one supplier. This is their page for an 8GB module for your MBP model:

I would also trust Crucial on this one. For a change they recognize that your model can use more RAM than stated in Apple's outdated specs:

  • Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) Startup Time Increased

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) non-retina model. I have an upgraded SSD (Crucial MX100). The startup time from switching on to the login screen is usually around five seconds but since this morning the time has increased to around 40 seconds. When the power button is pressed, the tone sounds and the screen lights up but it takes quite a while for the apple logo to appear. I haven't added or removed anything or changed any settings since before this happened.  There doesn't seem to be any changes to the performance of the computer once it has started up, or the time taken from the password entered for the bar to load (Yosemite).
My hard drive cable once broke and I had it replaced at an Apple store  (if that means anything to anyone). If anyone could give me any possible explanations or advise on how I can return the boot up time to the normal time.
    Thanks,
    Ben

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!
