Macbook Pro mid 2012 HDD clicking and low performance

Hello, everybody!
I have a question about the HDD, I think it's failing or it's very close to failing.
From the moment I bought my Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012 model I noticed quite low performance and also very disturbing sound of the HDD clicking, even when I don't touch the laptop. Running Disk Utility check and Apple Diagnostics became my favorite pastime, but it showed no sign of HDD (or other kind of) failure.
The smartcl shows the following:

Also I've noticed that the disk read operation takes more than (I believe) it should. For example, when I turn the laptop on and it was in the hibernation mode, it restores quite quickly and shows the login screen, but it's actually impossible to enter anything there, it just doesn't respond to keyboard or mouse input. By the time the login screen times out I am still unable to enter anything, and it goes back to sleep, and the story repeats.
More to it, most of the apps take ages to start. Preview starts in 5-10 seconds.
I thought it shouldn't be a software problem, since I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of OS X just two weeks ago.
So I went to the reseller I bought it from (Compustore here in Germany) and asked to check the laptop. They did, and told me everything was fine with it.
Is it indeed the normal behavior of Macbooks? I don't have anything to compare to, it's my first Mac, but I'm really far from being satisfied with it. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions,
Elijah.

Is it indeed the normal behavior of Macbooks?
No, of course not. It is very abnormal and the reseller's conclusion that everything is fine is obviously incorrect.
I have no explanation for the fact that Apple Diagnostics nor Disk Utility indicates a fault, but if the problem remained unchanged after taking the extreme measure of completely erasing the hard disk and installing OS X as you explained, then the only remaining cause is a hardware fault that has eluded all attempts to detect it.
I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of OS X just two weeks ago.
Confim the problems remained immediately after those actions and prior to installing any other software. The most common explanation for the behaviour you describe is the presence of any number of ill-conceived "anti-virus" or "cleanup" utilities.
If you described the problem and your attempts to rectify it accurately, then the reseller did not perform adequate diagnostic testing, or they are being deliberately deceitful, or they are simply incompetent.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro (mid-2012) so unresponsive and slow?

I have been having many huge problems with my MacBook Pro recently. First of all, it takes a minute to two minutes to boot up. Whenever I try to open an application, it usually takes 30 seconds or so to even open, and it remains unresponsive (with that little rainbow wheel) for another good minute. Chrome is really bad, and constantly freezes and doesn't load web pages, excel is a disaster, and I can type about 3 words in Notes before it shows the rainbow wheel for 15 seconds or so. Even when just one app is open, it will still do this. The rainbow wheel even appears when I right click the desktop, open finder, or click the top bar, with no apps open. I did create a partition throug Boot Camp about 6 months ago (I installed Windows 7), but I've deleted it, as I thought that was the problem. I've looked at my Activity Monitor while this is happening, and I've also taken it in to the tech guys at my school (it's a boarding school so they're my only resource). The only suggestion they had was to increase the RAM, so I did, from 4 to 8GB, using modules with the specifications recommended on the Apple site. There has been no noticable difference. The CPU is fine, only using about 5%, until it freezes, where the CPU spikes. Also, I have to manually sleep it, or else it starts getting really hot. I've searched google for a while and did everything I hadn't tried, like repairing the disk and permissions through disk utility. I use my laptop for everything, and it is necesary to have for many of the classes at this school, but when it freezes every 15 seconds and can't even open a folder without giving a rainbow wheel, it's very hard to use. Getting a new laptop is out of the question, as I could barely afford this one, so I'm kind of desparate. Any suggestions or help would be great.

  • Yosemite made my MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) EXTREMELY slow

Yosemite has really gummed up my system. I'm reluctant to do a clean install, but I will if absolutely necessary.

  • MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite

MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

  • OS X MAVERICKS on Macbook Pro, Mid 2012 4GB?

I am running a new Macbook Pro, Mid 2012, 4 GB and the App store said my computer was eligible to get OS X Mavericks.
My question is, how is almost 6 GB of a system going to fit into a 4 GB Macbook Pro.
    To upgrade or not? Help!

I upgraded mine to maveriks and am having many issues with it, I recomend not doing it till some issues have been fixed. There are problems with sound, scrolling with the trackpad, using usbs, keychain logs and the list goes on. I can't downgrade either. I'm so frustrated the fixes on various forums about these issues only seem to work temporarly

  • Adata sp900 sdd 128-GB ssd, optibay optical drive to replace superdrive, and 16 GB upgrade for macbook pro mid 2012.

    Hello everyone,
Thank you in advanced for all of the support.  This is my first post to the communities.  I just bought a 2.9 GHz core 17 processor MacBook pro mid 2012 13" with 8 GB of RAM and I am in the process of upgrading it.  When I bought the MacBook pro originally, I was told that I would never mac out the performance because I do not do a lot of photo/video editing.  This is true, but I am an academic researcher and tend to multitask often, having 20+ safari tabs open, SPSS (a statistical program), full screen mail app, full screen calendar app, and preview, iTunes open all at the same time.  I often get slow performance and error messages that state low memory.  This is why I am interested in upgrading the laptop.  I am getting ready to go to medical school and I want to have a powerful laptop.  I also want to future proof because I plan on having a dual boot system to mac OS and windows OS.
Because I know I will be maxing out the performance of the computer, I want to take full advantage of upgrades, especially now because the cost of the components is reasonable at the moment.  The following are the proposed upgrades:
    1.  Upgrade my current 8-GB ram (2x4-GB) with 16-GB ram (2x8-GB).  I plan on using crucial RAM.
    Crucial 16-GB Ram: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=IYGJWGQDH8LV0&psc=1
    2.  Replace my optical drive with a hard drive.  I will place a SSD into my current hard drive position and then install my current HDD into the optical drive bay with the optibay optical drive caddy.  I am doing this because I plan to use the SSD as the boot drive and my current HDD as my backup and files drive.  I am putting the SDD into the HDD because I have read it is better to place it in this bay for performance.  I will put the other HDD in the optical drive because the performance of that one will not be as important.
    Adata SSD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=IYGJWGQDH8LV0&psc=1
Optibay Optical Drive Caddy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058AH2US/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=I3GI8MGWAKXY79
    My questions:
    1.  Is the listed RAM appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    2.  Is the listed SSD appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    3.  Is the listed Optical Drive Caddy appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    4.  Is there still a firmware problem that does not allow for SATA 3 (6Gb/s) support in the optical drive?
    5.  Would it be easier to format the new SSD outside of the MacBook using a SATA to USB adapter?
    6.  Does working on any of the listed components void my AppleCare (I plan on keeping all of the original components so I can replace them, if I ever need to see apple support)?
    7.  What is the best way to put Mavericks onto the SSD to make this my boot drive?
    8.  What is the best way to make all of my files remain on the HDD, but link to the SSD with the operating system?
    9.  Has anyone ever successfully upgraded to 16-GB RAM and used their optical drive for a secondary hard drive?
    10.  Is there any miscellaneous advice for this project?
Please feel free to give partial answers.  I know this was a lot of information, but I wanted to be efficient in my post.  I am very appreciative of everyone who will contribute.
    Thank you!

16 GB of RAM is the best you can do.
The optibay HD will null  and void your warranty.

  • My iPad 3 is not charging on my macbook pro mid-2012. It was working yesterday and it is not working now, and I'm trying to transfer files between them. How do I charge my iPad with my macbook without having to be a completely new computer?

I am trying to transfer files between my ipad 3 and my macbook pro mid-2012 and they will just not connect. I connected them yesterday and it worked fine. And i can not air drop these files into my ipad it has to be done through itunes. And i can not afford to buy a new computer. How do i get these two to connect without having to buy a completely new computer?

Computer USB ports, regardless of the computer maker, have a relatively low power output and thus are not good chargers. They will charge but it takes a long time. You should be charging your iPad from wall power, or a more powerful source like an in-car charger.
Buying another computer will not change that.

  • Problem with bluetooth connection between iPhone 5s iOS 8.1.2 and MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Yosemite 10.10.1

After the upgrade to iOS 8.1.2 in iPhone 5s and OS X 10.1.1 Yosemite (MacBook Pro Mid 2012) can not connect my iPhone 5s to the MacBook, the iPhone tells me: "The MacBook is incompatible" or the message "Connection Error, Make sure the Mac is turned on and is within range" even the iPhone being close to the Mac. Otherwise with the updated iPad 2 (iOS 8.1.2) is connected via bluetooth to the MacBook without any problems, Even the iPad 2 does not detect the iPhone bluetooth.
    Help me please

An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5458

  • Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal?

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future
Please contact me or answer the question if you know anything about this!

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles.

  • Hey everybody. Do you know if i can run os x server on macbook pro mid 2012 with i5 2.5 GH, 4Gb RAM and OS X 10.8.4?

I recently saw that for os x server apple says that you can run it on inexpensive hardware like mac pro, imac and mac mini. It doesn't say anything about notebooks. So if i buy os x server will i be able to run it on my macbook pro mid 2012 with i5 2.5 GH, 4 Gb RAM and 10.8.4?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X Server is compatible with any Mac that runs OS X Mountain Lion, so you can install it on any MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini or Mac Pro that supports Mountain Lion > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
Just open the App Store and purchase OS X Server. The app will appear after finishing the download, so follow its steps to set up OS X Server on your computer. You will be able to install it for free in all your computers after purchasing it. If you want more information about OS X Server, read > http://www.apple.com/osx/server/

  • I have a new MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when I disconnect if from AC power.

I have a new 13" MacBook Pro mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when it is disconnected from AC power.  I have to press the power button to wake it up.  Is this a known issue or is there something wrong with the MacBook Pro?

There are a few threads about this around. Its a known issue for 2012 non retina users, not sure about Apple. It should not work this way and Apple has not put out an update to fix it yet. Check out these threads for some workarounds. I think I saw if you reinstall and don't update one of the updates you get normal functionality back. Otherwise there are some terminal changes you can make to make it operate mostly normally. I made some changes in terminal.

  • IPhone 5s and MacBook Pro mid 2012 Bluetooth

    Hi,
I was wondering if there is anyone who would offer any help to the issue I'm facing.
I'm an owner of the following devices:
    iPhone 5s running iOS 8.0.2
MacBook Pro mid 2012 running Yosemite
I tried connecting/pairing both devices via Bluetooth to try out the Continuity function but unfortunately I can't get both of the devices to connect. As far as I know, both the devices is compatible to run the Continuity function. Is there anything I'm missing out on?
    Cheers,
    Heal-me

You don't pair the devices via bluetooth to use continuity. You don't pair the devices at all.
