Macbook Pro Mid 2012: Issues with Yosemite update, graphics, and hard drive.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
I've used 192.8 GB
Operating System: 10.10.1 (14B25) YOSEMITE UPDATE
I've been experiencing problems with my Macbook Pro shortly after the two year mark of when I've purchased it. There are a few things that are going on. I recently verified my Macintosh HD disk through disk utility and it stated in red that there was an incorrect number of file hard links & then error: This disk needs to be repaired and to restart and then press "R". However, everything before that seemed to have passed. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive and use the time machine frequently. Another thing that has been happening, usually when I'm opening one my adobe programs, is that my screen will go white for a minute along with unidentifiable pink glitchy shapes that don't move. My computer has not been running like it used to and is running slow, freezing, and periodically going white --- as I just mentioned before. I just know that something isn't it right. I've been having to restart my computer by manually pressing the power button more than I've ever had over the past two years. I always work on my computer on a hard surface in a cool area & my fans seem to behaving okay. I also recently installed the Yosemite update for the mac sometime during this past November too and noticed slower running speed, more freezing, and longer times to boot up afterwards. Please speak up if you're experiencing problems with your 2012 Macbook pro too and especially after downloading the Yosemite upgrade. I don't see how it's in any way acceptable that I should have to deal with issues pertaining to my graphics card. Sorry for this post being a little all over the place.

Hello brousch,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that your Mac is spontaneously restarting whenever you see a certain animation on your screen.  This indicates your Mac is getting a kernel panic caused by that animation.  If you'd like to learn more about kernel panics, including how to troublshoot them, please take a look at the information in the link below.
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support
Have a great weekend,

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • My iPad 3 is not charging on my macbook pro mid-2012. It was working yesterday and it is not working now, and I'm trying to transfer files between them. How do I charge my iPad with my macbook without having to be a completely new computer?

I am trying to transfer files between my ipad 3 and my macbook pro mid-2012 and they will just not connect. I connected them yesterday and it worked fine. And i can not air drop these files into my ipad it has to be done through itunes. And i can not afford to buy a new computer. How do i get these two to connect without having to buy a completely new computer?

Computer USB ports, regardless of the computer maker, have a relatively low power output and thus are not good chargers. They will charge but it takes a long time. You should be charging your iPad from wall power, or a more powerful source like an in-car charger.
Buying another computer will not change that.

  • MacBook Pro mid-2012 sleeps with 30 sec delay

    Hello Community,
I've set pmset hypermode to 0 to make macbook faster go to sleep and it worked perfectly. Normally "time-to-stop" was about 3-5 seconds even with running VM (I've used parallels desktop 8). After I upgraded it to version 9 the problem occur. Every time when I close the lid or press sleep button it takes around 30 seconds to stop my mac. I checked pmset log and it says: "PMConnection: Response from CMacPowerHelper timed out (powercaps:0x0)" with delay 25 sec, which is why it takes so long.
And now the questions: what does this helper perform and why it prevent my mac to stop when VM is running?
Also how to resolve this issue and come back to normal 3-5 seconds "time-to-stop"
I've raised the support request with Parallels, but they aren't very goot at solving really technical issues.
Guys, any advise would be much appreciated!
    Power managememnt log:

Hi I have parallel 9 as well and I am experiencing probably the same problem. Even if all the applications are closed in rMbp early 2013 8GB Ram I have to wait 30 sec until my it go to sleep. The screen is closing but i can still hear the hard drive and I have to wait for the sleep to be completed in order to wake it up again. I did a restore and the time to go to sleep was 4-5 sec now with parallel is back to 30.

  • MacBook Pro (2011 model) issues with screen (blue tint and distorted graphics)

Since yesterday my macbook screen has started to appear as tinted blue with some distortion of images and i was hoping if anyone could let me know what may be wrong or if it is a techincal glitch?
    Any response would be appreciated!

I really cannot tell from your posted image any defect, not to suggest there isn't any.  You could fiddle with System Preferences>Displays>Color.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Mid-2012 13 inch disfunction of keyboard and trackpad

This evening, seemingly out of nowhere, my trackpad, and then my keyboard, progressively seemed to degenerate into a state of semi-unresponsiveness. Simply put; none of the keys on my computer will work. I tried bringing everything back to default. The trackpad isn't working properly. I cannot single-click on items; when I tap, the computer interprets it as a double-click. Some simple swiping motions still work, like the three-finger swipe between alternating desktops and the dashboard; however, on the whole, my computer is basically disfunctional. I can, with great difficulty, open up a program, but navigating it is next to impossible. Some basic software functions also seem to be deteriorating; I cannot click the "back" button at system preferences. I cannot click the help icon, and i cannot fill the cursor in a help space. It is terribly frustrating. Finals are coming up. I have a lot of important stuff saved to my computer.
I can access my guest account on my computer, but due to the fact that the keyboard isn't working, I cannot type in my password, and therefore I cannot access any of my personal files or anything on my account. I'm dying here. I don't know what's going on. Please, if there's anybody out there that can help me...
This seems like a software problem. I'm hoping I didn't get a virus (I understand that's pretty rare on Mac; I do not recall clicking on any suspicious material any time recently. My computer was functioning perfectly fine just before the incident began. I do not recall doing anything that could have made this happen. It just happened out of nowhere.
I read somewhere that it could be a wire/ribbon next to the battery that could have overheated and slightly melted, impairing the function of the trackpad and keyboard. I do not know whether this is likely.
It appears that, upon first turning my computer on, it will allow me to type a few letters right away, such as A, S, and D. However, when i try to continue, it will not. I then have great difficulty trying to delete it, and yea....
I plugged in my USB mouse, and it does not seem to be faring any better than my trackpad.
         Please help.

Thank you very much, sig. I can't figure out how to indicate that your response sovled my problem. Yeah, it turns out that there wasn't really a way for me to personally fix the isssue with my computer. I took it in to the Apple Store, they checked it out, and told me that they had to replace the entire keyboard/plate, and the warranty totally covered the costs. Everything is back to normal. Life is good.

  • Adata sp900 sdd 128-GB ssd, optibay optical drive to replace superdrive, and 16 GB upgrade for macbook pro mid 2012.

    Hello everyone,
Thank you in advanced for all of the support.  This is my first post to the communities.  I just bought a 2.9 GHz core 17 processor MacBook pro mid 2012 13" with 8 GB of RAM and I am in the process of upgrading it.  When I bought the MacBook pro originally, I was told that I would never mac out the performance because I do not do a lot of photo/video editing.  This is true, but I am an academic researcher and tend to multitask often, having 20+ safari tabs open, SPSS (a statistical program), full screen mail app, full screen calendar app, and preview, iTunes open all at the same time.  I often get slow performance and error messages that state low memory.  This is why I am interested in upgrading the laptop.  I am getting ready to go to medical school and I want to have a powerful laptop.  I also want to future proof because I plan on having a dual boot system to mac OS and windows OS.
Because I know I will be maxing out the performance of the computer, I want to take full advantage of upgrades, especially now because the cost of the components is reasonable at the moment.  The following are the proposed upgrades:
    1.  Upgrade my current 8-GB ram (2x4-GB) with 16-GB ram (2x8-GB).  I plan on using crucial RAM.
    Crucial 16-GB Ram: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=IYGJWGQDH8LV0&psc=1
    2.  Replace my optical drive with a hard drive.  I will place a SSD into my current hard drive position and then install my current HDD into the optical drive bay with the optibay optical drive caddy.  I am doing this because I plan to use the SSD as the boot drive and my current HDD as my backup and files drive.  I am putting the SDD into the HDD because I have read it is better to place it in this bay for performance.  I will put the other HDD in the optical drive because the performance of that one will not be as important.
    Adata SSD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=IYGJWGQDH8LV0&psc=1
Optibay Optical Drive Caddy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058AH2US/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=2B1KHELSPJPNN&coliid=I3GI8MGWAKXY79
    My questions:
    1.  Is the listed RAM appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    2.  Is the listed SSD appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    3.  Is the listed Optical Drive Caddy appropriate and sufficient for my MacBook pro?
    4.  Is there still a firmware problem that does not allow for SATA 3 (6Gb/s) support in the optical drive?
    5.  Would it be easier to format the new SSD outside of the MacBook using a SATA to USB adapter?
    6.  Does working on any of the listed components void my AppleCare (I plan on keeping all of the original components so I can replace them, if I ever need to see apple support)?
    7.  What is the best way to put Mavericks onto the SSD to make this my boot drive?
    8.  What is the best way to make all of my files remain on the HDD, but link to the SSD with the operating system?
    9.  Has anyone ever successfully upgraded to 16-GB RAM and used their optical drive for a secondary hard drive?
    10.  Is there any miscellaneous advice for this project?
Please feel free to give partial answers.  I know this was a lot of information, but I wanted to be efficient in my post.  I am very appreciative of everyone who will contribute.
    Thank you!

16 GB of RAM is the best you can do.
The optibay HD will null  and void your warranty.

  • MacBook late 2009 vs MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (Ram)

Hi, I recently upgraded the Ram in my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) to 16gb 1600 MHz DDR3 and my wife's MacBook (late 2009) has 2gb 1067 MHz DDR3 currently in it, but I tried using my old Ram (2gb slots) from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and her MacBook wouldn't boot up at all, I just got a black screen.
So I see the difference is the 1600 MHz vs the 1067 MHz, so does that mean that my old Ram won't work because of this?
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ Meezy

    yes, that is why.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2012 not starting up after Yosemite Update

I'm using a MacBook Pro mid 2012 model , enrolled into Yosemite Public Beta Program ...
After the official public launch , app store suggested that i rather update from beta 5 to beta 6 , as downloading extra 5 gig of OS data seemed unnecessary for me , I just updated from the app store.
Post the update , after shutting down my MacBook , I tried starting it up after 8 hours , it failed to respond to any of my prompts .
    Keyboard not responding
    Power Button not responding
Li-Po Battery indicator alone works ,
When plugged MagSafe , it indicates charging .
The Sleep Indicator (in the front - that of hard disk drive ) blinks occasionally.
Later, when i tried powering up with MagSafe , It booted luckily , after some 20 hours of work , i shut the system down ,
Again when i tried booting up  , it failed .
The problem persists since 3 days.
I tried booting up in Safe Mode - No result
Tried Verbose Booting up - No result
Cleared NV RAM - No result
Cleared SMC as Apple instructed for Intel Based MacBooks - No result.
Removed Battery and kept aside for a while , After an hour tried powering up , It booted up , Went till Apple Logo , The loading bar was some 45%
Then it started to go down with a black screen ,
    It never starts up again.
After regular intervals of removing and installing battery , it starts up to white screen and goes off.
I am really worried and desperate now.
I am not sure whether my HDD is dead or my Battery is dead  or my Logic board is dead or my Yosemite Install was not right ?
After hours of online research , nothing seems to be helpful .
People at Apple Care (Premium ReSeller , India) are so irresponsible in attending the issue ,
They say its helpless without even doing some basic troubleshoot.
Where would it have went wrong and What am i supposed to do now ?
    PLEASE HELP !!

    darkrider92,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as the one that you got from your mom. Were you able to install the 10.6.8 update successfully onto the factory drive? Were you using the factory RAM when you tried to install the 10.6.8 update on the SSD?
Have you checked  the Web site of the SSD’s manufacturer, to see if there’s a firmware update available for the SSD?
You can download the 10.6.8 update outside of Software Update from Apple here; in case you need to try to install this update several times, running it from your local disk would be more convenient than waiting for it to download again.

  • Problem with bluetooth connection between iPhone 5s iOS 8.1.2 and MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Yosemite 10.10.1

After the upgrade to iOS 8.1.2 in iPhone 5s and OS X 10.1.1 Yosemite (MacBook Pro Mid 2012) can not connect my iPhone 5s to the MacBook, the iPhone tells me: "The MacBook is incompatible" or the message "Connection Error, Make sure the Mac is turned on and is within range" even the iPhone being close to the Mac. Otherwise with the updated iPad 2 (iOS 8.1.2) is connected via bluetooth to the MacBook without any problems, Even the iPad 2 does not detect the iPhone bluetooth.
    Help me please

An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5458
