Macbook Pro/Mountain Lion not saving anything

Hi,
For a while now, I've been putting up with it. But it has now become so annoying. Let me describe with examples:
After turning off my MBP, when I start it up again:
No bookmarks save in Safari
The volume in iTunes stays at the same level (one notch below full)
Any changes to the dock are reverted
Downloads in Safari are outdated, by about 2 months. Even when I clear them and download new stuff
Weird things to do with applications "not having permission" etc. (I have repaired permissions)
Logic Pro 9 having to rescan various plugins, EVERY SINGLE TIME!!
Logic telling me the last project I opened was one that I opened ages ago
It seems like my mac is starting up as if it thinks it's March.
Let me know if you have any incling about what it might be.
Thanks

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:

    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • HT4245 my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.

this is a very frustrating problem
my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.
it keeps on saying that ive entered the wrong passcode.
i even have my firewall turned off
    plz help

    Ok...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation?

  • How do I install/upgrade iWork 2005 on my new MacBook Pro / Mountain Lion?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro (converted back from Windows) and installed an old version of iWork (2005) I purchased years ago, hoping to upgrade it. It didn't install properly as it only shows a folder in Finder/Apps, with a couple of docs in the folder and doesn't show up as an app for Upgrade. The guy that upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion at the Apple Store told me this should work.
       1) How do I install iWork 2005 on my MacBook Pro / Mountain Lion?
       2) How do I upgrade it without having to purchase a new copy?
    Thanks!

You cannot link any version of iWork installed from a retail disk or trial to the Mac App Store.
You install iWork '05 on your new Mac just as you always have, making sure you have the serial number to enter. But the iWork apps are very reasonably priced on the Mac App Store & have come a very long way in 7 years. And now Numbers is available for spreadsheets.

  • My sister can't find Pages on her Macbook Pro Mountain Lion, can someone help?

My sister is new to her MacBook Pro Mountain Lion and thinks she may have deleted the Pages program. She's away at college for the first time and needs this program. I've told her to use Finder and search for Pages, or look in her applications, but to no avail. Help?

How did she acquire Pages in the first place?
If it was a purchase from the Mac App Store, all she need to do is launch App Store (from the  menu is easiest), sign in with the Apple ID & password used, click on 'purchases' & click the INSTALL button to the right of Pages in the list.
If it was from a retail DVD she will need the DVD to reinstall.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Keyboard Backlight not working Macbook Pro Mountain Lion

Since updating to 10.8.3 it seems my keyboard light has entirely gone out. I have reset the SMC and the PRAM. I do not have File Vault installed. I've tried Pin Tick app and also obviously played around with everything possible in preferences to make it light up...nothing. Any other suggestions? Mid 2010 Macbook Pro.

    One more thing to try:
System Preferences > Keyboard > uncheck Adjust keyboard brightness in low light

  • Internet Sharing on MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion

I am having trouble enabling internet sharing on my macbook pro with os x mountain lion, version 10.8.3. My computer is connected to the internet from an ethernet cord, and I want to share the connection with my iphone wirelessly. I have tried going to system preferences > sharing > internet sharing. From here I chose "Ethernet" from the dropdown menu "Share your connection from." I chose "Wi-Fi" from the ports options under "To computers using." (AirPort is NOT an option listed under the ports menu). When I then check the internet sharing box to enable the sharing, a message pops up saying "To share your Internet connection, you must turn on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is turned off." Obviously, I don't have Wi-Fi, so I can't do this. How do I fix this problem?? Please help!!

No, I don't have Wi-Fi. There is no Wi-Fi in this building. If there were, I wouldn't need to share my internet through the ethernet cord.

  • My MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) seems to be making copies of files in my download folder.  Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

My MacBookPro with Mountain Lion seems to be making copies of files in my download folder.  Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

This issue has nothing to do with Time Machine or local snaphsots. No built-in feature of OS X does what you describe.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

All updates have been done, I did not install anything nieuw. Can anybody help?

Nvidia's official site. I don't know if I am allowed to send links on this site so I am not going to do that.
Anyway, I tried to contacted the apple on 16'th and just got a response a few minutes ago.Unfortunately then I had to reinstall my mountain lion all over again by recovery. Well, I lost many stuff but 'Hey! Mountain Lion got much faster for some reason so, I'm not complaining.

  • Macbook Pro Mountain Lion Upgrade Issues

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro with a solid state and fresh installed Mountain Lion. Since I did this my laptop has been very hot and it wont completely shutdown. It gets down to the blacks screen but it wont actually turn off and then I have to press the physical shutdown button and then my computer turns on it'll say it shutdown because of a problem.
In addition, it's very loud and it gets up to 80 and 90 degrees celcuis.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I found that running the installer ( right click the installer and choose Show Package Contents) look for something that says InstallESD.DMG
Drag it to your desktop and double click it, it should run an installer while still logged in. Make sure all apps are closed.
Before doing this, I would open disk utility and verify and repair disks and permissions before installing and then after installing.

  • How do I disable my dvd optical drive on my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion)?

    Hey,
I have dvd stuck in my optical drive and it keeps on making a noise-non stop. I've tried everything to remove it, ATM cards, rebooting whilst holding mouse key and eject botton, terminal command etc etc.-nothing works! I'm stuck in North Africa with no Apple services available anywhere close by.
I don't really use the dvd drive that much anyway so I would like to just disable my dvd optical drive all together. I saw that it is possible on Snow Leopard and Lion but the option to go to /Library/Extensions and removing (IODVDStorageFamily.kext) and removing it is not available on Mountain Lion.
    Help please!

Light source. Straightened paper-clip. Insert straight (no wiggling around) to find the mechanical eject hole on the edge of the DVD drive.
Hold the MBP trackpad down during a cold reboot. I know you said you used a mouse like this.
    In Terminal, type drutil eject
Try ejecting the DVD with the MBP flipped upside down. Sometimes all you need is gravity. If the credit card didn't pry it up off the drive spindle, maybe this will.
Because of your location, you may not have the tools to take the MBP apart and remove the DVD drive.

  • Uninstalling Parallels on new MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion)

    Hello everyone!
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (the lowest end 13-inch model).
I had Parallels 3 (ancient!) on my old MacBook. I no longer need it on the new one and, well, that doesn't really matter because it doesn't run on it anyway.
I used Time Machine with help from some Apple techs at a One-to-One to bring all my old stuff to the new computer. Though I didn't want to bring over Parallels, I did want to ensure that I got all my other stuff over, and I couldn't pick and choose the Applications.
To Uninstall Parallels 3 completely, I have to follow this protocol:
    http://kb.parallels.com/4709
However, when I use the disk OR the .dmg image (I have both), neither work - they freeze or quit. I assume this is because, in general, Parallels 3 isn't even supported on the new model.
I would like to delete it all completely, but want to get EVERYTHING off. I know AppZapper won't get it all off, and I am not technical enough to go behind the scenes and screw around. I did read, regarding the rules above, that one false move could wipe out my new MacBook. Not willing to take that risk.
Has anyone been in this position before? I also have reinstalled Windows and am using Virtual Box, and, ideally, want to make sure that if I take out Windows (that was installed from Parallels), it isn't removing the Windows that I use for Virtual Box.
    Please help if you can!
