Macbook Pro mouse click delay on 10.6.4 start-up

Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and found that while the track pad will move the cursor around the screen, you can not select (click) on anything for the first 3 or 4 minutes after start-up. Updated to 10.6.4 and have the same trouble. Plug in a single button USB apple mouse and still the same trouble. Anyone else having this glitch??? I have a Macbook Pro 17", 2.33 Ghz, 2 Gig of SDRam. Is it a firmware problem?? I'm ready to wipe the drive and do a clean install, but that seems to be a lot of work for something that is annoying but not a devastating problem. Other than that it seems to be a great OS.
Help!!!

Since I posted I have done several things... reset Pram, repaired disk (there were minor problems) repaired permissions (again minor problems and all were fixed... and both were done booted from the Snow Leopard install disk). On restart the same problem persists, and after checking, there is no keyboard input either. (hadn't checked that before) also on last boot from full shutdown, time from button push to full desktop... 3 minutes 42 seconds... time from full desktop to working mouse click 4 minutes 13 seconds.... That's almost 8 minutes from a cold laptop to a working machine...
Think a disk wipe and clean reinstall would help this??

If "Tap to Click" is enabled, click should register by tapping on any part of the Trackpad.

My Macbook Pro takes a long time (41 secs) from start to reach log-in - It used to be almost instantaneous, I'm running Lion OS. I thought this might be because I'd used a lot of disk space but I've now reduced that - I'm only using 40 of the 320 gb available. I have no games and I've unchecked the "re-open windows" option on shutdown. The rest of the preformance (once in) remains good.

41 seconds is actually a little faster then normal. Boot from completely off is normally around 45-50 seconds.
Your computer never ever came on almost instantaneously from completely off. You are confusing waking up from sleep mode and booting the computer from completely off.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

If your MBP is under warranty, bring it to an Apple store and have the technicians fix it.  If not, try the steps in this support article:

  • My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up.

My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up the computer.
Sometimes it beeps after freezing, and keeps beeping forever until I shut down the computer by pressing the power button.
Other times the screen gets a little darker and a text appears saying I need to turn off the computer by pressing the power button and restart, but after restarting the computer freezes again. Each time I turn it on it takes only a few minutes to freeze it seams, about 2-3 minutes or less, and occasionaly it doesn´t even start up.
I don´t recall the exact version of the operating system, its MacOSX (10.6 or something)
    Any sollutions?

Three beeps is usually indicative of a RAM problem.  Take out one RAM chip and see what happens and then swap with the other one.  See if there is a difference.  Also engage the Apple hardware test and see if that offers any useful information.
    Ciao.

Dropped my macbook pro, now it makes a whirling noise at start up. What should I do?

Is there any signs of damage on the outside? Under warranty? If no signs and still under warranty, take it to the applestore and play dumb. If there are obvious signs of a fall, then your warranty will be voided and you have the option of paying for the repair or living with the sound and waiting for a failure of some sort.

What makes you think it's too long? Actually 35 seconds is pretty fast.

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • MacBook Pro Trackpad: Clicking problems

I have a MacBook Pro, (15 inch, Late 2008) and have always had fairly significant issues with the trackpad. It only registers clicks about half of the time. I have experimented with all the trackpad settings and "tap to click" also fails to register consistently. I usually have to press very hard, after the trackpad depresses for the click to register in the OS. I've continually experienced this problem in Leopard, Snow Leopard, and now Lion.
I've read that a lot of other people have had similiar issues with their trackpads over the last 3 years, but I've never heard about any fix or remedy. My trackpad does depress just fine, so I don't think that the trackpad screw would need to be adjusted at all. An external mouse registers clicks 100% of the time, so it isn't a software issue. I've heard that some people's ribbon that connects the trackpad could be loose, but I'm nervous to open it up and mess around with it.
I click with the side of my thumb--as most other people do. However clicking with my index finger also fails to register clicks, so I don't think it is a "accidental input" issue or a multitouch issue.
My girlfriend has the exact same model of Macbook Pro. Same year, same season, exact same specs. Her trackpad works perfectly.
I brought the computer to a Genius Bar, and the "Genius" said that it was just fine and somehow magically got it to register his clicks. I think maybe he had a sercret Magic Mouse under the table. I left bewildered and defeated.
Maybe I should just navigate via keyboard...

Don't worry about what the 'Genius' had to say most are just Apple grunts, slugging it out in the trenches.
If you are out of warranty / AppleCare then I would suggest finding an authorized independent Apple repair company. Go there, get a ridiculous quote (most likely) then ask around and find a local computer repair shop. Any place with "Apple Authorized" is basically like dealing with Apple.
You could also ask another 'Genius' or a 'Super Genius' (ie Manager.)
I promise you are not alone.
I have killed keyboards and trackpads with the following:
    - A glass of Merlot.
    - A glass of water
    - Another glass of water
    - A dog, knocking the laptop off the couch and to the floor.
I could continue, but seriously. Don't get up. The other option is to get a bluetooth mouse. Personally I love mine.

  • MacBook Pro Mouse Problem

The mouse on my MacBook Pro has recently become quite unresponsive. The trackpad works fine, but clicking by pressing on the pad and the ability to click and drag is almost completely non-functional. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I press on the trackpad, sometimes certain locations will respond better than others. Are there any fixes that I could try before having to take the computer into an Apple store?

None of my preferences had been changed from before the problem started. I ended up taking my computer to the Genius Bar and they replaced the trackpad, which was probably the only thing to do to fix it. Thanks for your help though!

  • Macbook Pro mouse touchpad in Vista?

I just bought a Macbook Pro and because of certain applications that I need for work I have Vista Ultimate x64 running on Bootcamp. Everything works great except for the built in mouse touchpad. I can move the cursor fine but I can't tap on the touchpad itself to click. I have to use the click button which annoys the **** out of me. Is there a way to fix this so I can click using the touchpad itself or is this just one of those compatibility issues that I'll have to live with?

    Hi
Same problem... the touchpad functionality in Vista is really annoying, without tapping or right-clicking.
any chance someone has a solution for those two ??
