Macbook Pro no audio in ??

I notice there is no microphone in socket on the new Macbook Pro Retina.
I need to record voiceovers via a mic for FCP, how will I do this now ?

Hi,
how come you say Apple has dropped Line IN support on the Macbook Pro Retina?  Profiler says it has a combo connector and apple website [1] says it is compatible with iphone headset
Mountain Lion seems to have a bug -> http://www.nerdsonsite.com/blog/2012/08/16/mountain-lion-on-macbooks-incompatibl e-with-3-5mm-microphones/
[1]
Apple Webite states:
Stereo speakers
Dual microphones
Headphone port
Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
Support for audio line out (digital/analog)

  • HT202730 Macbook Pro Optical Audio Output Toggles On/Off

My Macbook Pro optical audio output seems to switch off with a loud click when sound is not playing for a few seconds.
Then, when sound resumes, there's a delay as it switches back on.
Is there a way to stop this toggling?
And please don't tell me to check the connections.
I've already tried different sample sizes and bit rates to no avail. It seems as if the system is switching something when there is no audio being played, then switching it on again. Even if the playback is only on pause.

The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDs just a few seconds after inserting them. This happens both with original audio CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes. The same does NOT happen with data CDs (e.g., stuff in mp3 format), which are read just fine. This behaviour started a couple of weeks ago, until then everything had worked just fine for years. I am running iTunes 11.1 under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Any idea?

  • Logic Studio, MacBook pro, M-Audio ProFire 610, M-Audio Axiom 61

I'm just about to get the above: Logic Studio, MacBook Pro, M-Audio ProFire 610 and the M-Audio Aziom 61, and want to know if any of the above (Logic Studio and MacBook Pro excluded) are a big mistake. I've been using an Aluminium Powerbook 17" 1.33MHz, and M-Audio MobilePre USB, and an Edirol controller, with guitar rig (and Controller), and Logic Express 7.
I need a set-up that will work as well in the studio, as it does on stage. We tend to plug everything in to the powerbook at the moment, and use Reason to power the synths, guitar rig for the guitars and bass, and logic express plugins for vocals etc.
Anyone have any experience with any of the above?
    Cheers,
    Adam

    Hi Zuelito,
Please read my first paragraph again:
"I gotta RESPECTFULLY take issue with every point you bring up about M-Audio stuff, Zuelito..."
I'm not sure how you can be "slightly put off by the tenor" of my post given everything I said, with the one possible exception being my line about MOTU making crappy hardware - and that was based on personal experience. And while we're talking about the opinions of others, feel free to peruse the Unicornation board - it's full of MOTU users talking about firewire port failures and other hardware issues - so it appears neither of us is alone in our experiences
Seriously, if I was in some way brash or offensive in the way my post came off, I publicly and sincerely apologize. I really try to think about what I say (and how I say it) when posting on the 'net, for this very reason. I thought I simply stated my experience in an informative manner; again, please re-read my post - I hope it comes across as intended.
For what it's worth, I will say (even more clearly) that I've always loved MOTU products in terms of feature set; maybe that's why I've owned almost every product they've ever made! However, in my environment, I simply can't risk hardware failures, and their stuff has let me down too many times to keep rolling the dice. I will also divulge that one of their top tech support guys has acknowledged the firewire port problem. That's a shame, because they do make great stuff, conceptually. I really wish I could take a chance on that new 896mk3, but it ain't gonna happen for me; 6 dead firewire ports is enough of a failure rate for me to give up on them. To be fair, this probably isn't an issue for fixed installations, but I have to make these connections daily while on tour.
Also, I did NOT categorically state that "M-Audio stuff is better than MOTU." Again, if you re-read my post, it should be obvious that all I'm saying is I have a newfound respect for M-Audio, as of the new ProFire series. I also said in my first paragraph that I shared your opinion of M-Audio for a long time!
If this were all about M-Audio's 410 vs. MOTU's Ultralite (or other competition), we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion as I would have agreed with you - but the original poster specifically asked about the newer 610 with Logic, which is what I'm using on one of my rigs. I simply offered my personal experience.
As for drivers, I've not had any problems with M-Audio or their level of support. Just the opposite - they really seem to be on the ball and are way more communicative than other mfrs. I don't know of any other mfr. that supports each OS subrelease in detail like they do, and their development speed seems as fast (if not faster) than anyone else.
Finally, until now I've only owned a few M-Audio pieces (410, 1814), but I can state that they've been flawless. Their audio quality was not 'high end' by any stretch, but I only used them for utility purposes (writing rigs on the road, etc.). Like I said, my main studio stuff has been RME or Apogee for years, and that's the quality level I'm used to - which is why the 610 really surprised me. I also have several friends who do a LOT of touring, many of which rely on M-Audio hardware (mostly 410s). One guy's unit doesn't even have any paint left on it from road abuse - but it still works like a champ after 4 years.
So anyway, this is all just my experience. Hope it doesn't come across as anything but that
    Peace,
    Jim

  • How do I use the MacBook Pro's audio line in?

    Hi,
I've been trying to connect my Playstation 3's analog audio output to my MacBook Pro but it doesn't seem to work. Everytime after I connect it, there still won't be any sound coming out of the speakers.
How is the analog line in supposed to work?
    Thanks!

    Hi Ymer,
Have you selected "audio line in" as your sound source in System preferences / Sound?
The other thing you will need to do is get hold of a copy of an excellent little utility produced by the people who make "Audio Hijack", called "Line-In" - available from http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/LineIn.shtml or direct from the maker at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
There is no need to use a sound recording app, if you use "Line In", though that is another option.
    Cheers

  • 10.6.8 update Macbook Pro (2006) audio dropouts

Hi, I've got this nightmare problem, since I updated to OS10.6.8, my Macbook Pro late 2006 drops the audio, randomly, rendering the whole caboodle absolutely useless as a studio tool. It still works out of the headphone output, but not with my MOTU 828, or an M-Audio FW interface I tried it with either. Seems to happenw ith Logic, iTunes, whatever.
Has anybody else had this problem, perhaps suggest a solution? One Mac expert said he thought it was a firewire port issue, and nothing could be done without replacing the motherboard.
There was a wierd glitch with saving/storage afer 10.6.8 upgrade, and I used this fix..http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3968
Don't know if that could have affected anything..
    Thankyou Mac world people.

Did you follow these steps, EXACTLY?

Note: Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Audio Output sound quality terrible after Lion upgrade

    Hi guys,
I have recently upgraded my 2011 MBP 13 to Lion, and ever since have had terrible audio out sound quality, i.e. it is 'grainy' and full of feedback - very unpleasant to listen to.
Is anyone else in the same boat and does anyone have the solution to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Sorry for the late reply, yes mine does does recover but I still think it is the same issue with different levels of severity.  This is a guess but possibly my higher spec Retina MacBook Pro can work its way through the issue where your 13" MBP can't or can't in a reasonable amount of time.
I have also thought that it is related to window server and was wondering if someone else would bring it up as semi-confirmation since 2 people would have to came to the same conclusion, yes I am weird you don't have to tell me.  I am thinking it is possibly related to the lower priority for background apps; it gets caught thinking every window is in the background, chokes, and does not know what to do which is why the cursor will still move since it never gets "backgrounded".  As for the caps lock, it is pretty much hardware based which is why we can have a virtual machine not read the caps lock on someimes if it is turned on when the VM is started.
I wish Apple would have more testers so things like this would not slip through.  I see more complaints like this when there are external displays on MacBooks than single display iMacs/Minis.  Something that may not be tested enough since it requires more specific circumstances.
Sorry, I don't know how to restart window server without the terminal.  I would have loved to test the theory since that would answer the question of what is at fault quickly.

  • Macbook Pro + M-Audio Studiophile Speakers. VERT quiet sound output!

    Hi All,
Kind of a newb here - so I'm not sure if I'm going about this in the right way or not. Here's what's going on: I have an M-Audio BX5a speaker plugged into my Macbook Pro via the headphone jack (1/8" -> 1/4" cable) and even with the sound maxed on my MBP and BX5a, the volume coming out of the BX5a is extremely quiet. I Tried playing music through iTunes to do a sound test (this is my 1st time using these speakers) and the music is only audible when I'm sitting right next to the speaker. I tried searching through several pages of search results but couldn't find anything. I have a hunch that this is a Mac OS issue and not an M-Audio one, since I had a similar problem with my last macbook. All help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Adjust the *volume slider within iTunes* all the way up, turn the master volume control down to near minimum, and then test again, gradually turning the master volume slider up to see whether the results are better.
The volume slider in iTunes limits the maximum volume that is available through the master control, at least when iTunes is playing.

  • Macbook Pro Browser Audio over Thunderbolt

I have a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro, and sometimes like to hook it up to my HDTV with my Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. I can get the audio from iTunes to work absolutely beautifully, but can't get browser audio to work! This means no YouTube or Grooveshark. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
    Thanks.

    Ehych is very correct.
On your $300 switch box, here is *one from MonoPrice* that is only $43!
I've purchased several cables & switch boxes from them - VERY good quality, price & shipping.

  • Macbook Pro jack Audio problem

Hi, suddenly the audio output from the jack of my macbook pro 13" is "distorted ". everything happened from one day to another. I did not do anything special, I tried to try different audio outputs to see that it was a cable problem, but as occurs with everything that I connect I'm afraid something has happened to my mac. What should I do? Thanks!

I found a temporary solution - killing the coreaudio process resets the audio and I'm good. But what causes it is still uncertain.

  • MacBook Pro Phantom Audio Problem - Audio decreases settings unchanged

I'm having a very strange issue with a MacBook Pro. Over the course of a presentation the audio output will slowly decrease until it is almost inaudible. I'm running the machine into a sounds system and I can turn up the MBP volume to compensate until I hit the max, but it continues to gradually reduce.
Could this be an overheating problem? The logic board on this machine was just replaced due to an issue where the optical out would not disengage so this is a brand new (less than a week old) logic board.
Any suggestions/solutions save having the board replaced again, or asking for a new machine?

I appreciate your response. I still have concerns:
The red-lite is off when my issue is happening.
The red-lite is on when my issue is happening.
It was not consistent. My concern is the Macintosh operating system not detecting the change. My other concern is it can _not_ be only a hardware switching issue, as Alsamixer, a software program, can make the switch toggle between off or on. If it was a hardware-only issue, Alsamixer would be a fail. And, if it is actually a hardware-only issue triggering a software 1 or 0 switch somewhere:
My final concern is 'where is this setting being stored' as clearning PRAM and reinstalling entire operating system after opertating system (Leopard to Lion and back to Leopard) after a disk wipe has no effect.
I guess it sounds to me, that OSX tries to be too user-friendly by not allowing peeps to change those options themselves. Is there a dscl command switch I can use to manually override such an effect? (Just in case I don't happen to have anything to stick into the mini-jack port)
Regardless, your answer is correct. Thank you both (Ciao and Allan Jones)

  • MacBook Pro Retina Audio issue after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Got my new MacBook Pro with Retina display just over a week ago now and was working brilliantly up until last night.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion via the App store as I already bought it for my other macs and didnt wish to wait to redeem my free copy.
Ever since the update the audio develops a stutter on any audio file no matter what format, program used or at any volume.
I am hoping this is just a software isssue and can be easily rectified. I have restarted it, tried a different user and pretty much anything else I could think of before posting this.
Any help would be greatly recieved.
    Thanks
    Luke

Using gfxCardStatus to force discrete graphics stops the audio stutter on my machine.  I already returned one retina mbp for three dead pixels... Strange that graphics switching has something to do with the audio, especially since it was stuttering every 15 seconds or so, not when the nvidia kicked in...

  • MacBook Pro & bluetooth audio - why so buggy?

    Hi!
I do, from time to time, try to hook up my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (running 10.6.8) with my Logitech wireless bluetooth speaker adapter. Sometimes it works - most of the time it doesn't.
It either won't connect at all - or the sound get's all chopped up (like if you try to watch a youtube HD clip on a 28,8 kbps dial-up).
So, whenever I want to enjoy Spotify through my loudspeakers, I have to use my iPhone, which works without a flaw, but I must say, it had been more convenient for me using my laptop instead.
I've seen similar problems concerning MacBook Pro and bluetooth audio on these forums, none of which there seems to be a solution to. And by looking at threads addressing this problem with laptops running Lion, I don't think upgrading the OS will solve the problem either.
Why this HUGE differences between Macbook Pro and Iphone bluetooth performance? What is causing this problem? Is it the bluetooth drivers? If so, is there some way to fix them? Like, downloading alternate drivers or modifying a string in a kext - something?
....Or am I forced to buy a separate bluetooth adapter for my macbook?

Unfortunately the problem is both software and hardware related. The software side of things can be semi-resolved by following the instructions at this blog:
    http://mariusvw.com/2011/06/16/how-to-fix-the-crackling-bad-sound-of-bluetooth-a 2dp-headsets-or-speakers-on-mac-os-x/
And the hardware issue is just downright weird, this document from intel explains that USB 3.0 cables and internal connectors emit radio interferance on the same 2.4Ghtz frequency as bluetooth, thus the range and signal strength of bluetooth is significantly decreaced in macs. This explains why iOS devices have exellent connections up to 33 feet but macs cut out just a few meters away.

Not looking good for mac users I'm afraid.

  • Plugging Guitar into Macbook Pro 13'' - Audio Interfaces

Alright, so I've done a fair bit of research but there just seems to be so much to read out there that I figure it may simply be easier to post this here and see what kind of answers I get. Anyway, I want to plug my guitar and record some stuff on my macbook pro (13-inch, core-2 duo) and i'm running Snow Leopard. I'm a pretty seasoned guitar player, but I'm not looking to do the heaviest and most intense recording here, I simply want to be able to decently record some stuff onto my mac. I know with my macbook it has a dual audio input/output jack, but I don't exactly want to plug in through the input though because I want the output going into some speakers, and using the input jack really isn't the greatest (especially when I'm plugging into just an electric guitar). So my options appear to be using an audio interface, but first question is whether or not I should be looking at USB or Fireware connections. Secondly, I read some stuff about the Apogee Jam thing (which is usb) and is reasonably priced, along with M-Audio Fast Track (also usb) and is a little higher priced. Basically I'm looking for something that is reasonably priced (as I'm not professionally recording here) around the $100 range, but produces a pretty solid sound quality, and works fairly well...the best bang for the buck, if you will.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I also have an amp that I could use that has a headphone jack which I can plug the guitar into the amp, and the amp into the computer (but again, it seems as though plugging into the input really is not the greatest call).
    Thanks very much!

I also don't need an audio interface with any additional sound patches, or effects, etc. I have more than enough to do that with my own equipment. So, an audio interface with a lot of effects is definitely not a priority.
