Macbook Pro not shutting down

2011 Macbook Pro with Lion
I only notice the problem with the system not shutting down or restarting, it goes to the grey screen and the I see the spining icon at the bottom of the screen only when I open itunes and have my external seagate goflex 2tb connected through firewire. All my audio and video files for itunes are stored onto the external drive. I can properlly shut down or restart the system with external drive connected for backups or anything else but not after opening itunes.
Below is from the system log:

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Macbook Pro not shutting down using "cmd alt ctrl eject"

Usually, the keyboard shortcut "cmd alt ctrl eject" worked as expected, shutting down my Macbook Pro 2010 (running latest Mountain Lion) instantly.
Now, recently, it started to behave differently: It will now not shut down, but (very shortly - almost not readable) display the error message "You shut down your computer because of a problem" and then go to the login screen. Typing in the password will lead back to the desktop - no shutting down. Otherwise, through the menu or power button, shutting down still works.
I have browsed the forum for this case, but could only find few other (mostly unsolved) issues that sounded similar (issues on start up etc), but didn't really match my specific issue.
Did anybody experience a similar issue and/or has an idea for a solution?
btw I have recently installed a new SSD drive and installed Mountain Lion freshly. After the install, the keyboard shortcut worked fine, until it stopped working...
    Thanks, Ralf.

After playing around some more, I think I have found the source of the issue.
It seems that a background process from a ColorMunki calibration tool kept the Mac from shutting down properly. The calibration SW had placed a little icon in the top bar. After exiting from that program, the keyboard command is now again working.
So, might be that other similar cases are also related to processes / programs still running in the background, without being visible as such in the dock...

  • 15in MacBook Pro not shutting down

My 15in MacBook Pro won't shut down, and I have to 'crash stop' it with the power button. Any suggestions?

Same problem: impossible to shut down or restart using the normal way, need to use "shutdown -h" or "-r" with Terminal to stop my Mac.
I have tried many things: permission repair, disk repair, SMC resetting, cleaning of many things using software as Onyx or AppleJack. Still the same problem.
From the Activity Monitor, I don't see any process that could prevent the Mac to stop. Well, I may not be able to see it...
But the problem may happen even earlier than that: when using the "Restart" in the Apple menu, nothing happens: all the softwares running (Firefox, Mail, etc...) just continue unperturbed whereas in normal functioning, they were stopped one after the other when restarting or shutting down.
    Any idea?

  • My MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal.  Anyone have this issue before

MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal.  Anyone have this issue before?  I've only had this for about 3mos.  I called apple support. They tried one thing then said I have to take to the apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. So before I travel an hour+ away I thought is give it a shot on here. Thank.

My MacBook Pro recently shut down on me all of a sudden. When I restarted it, it popped up with a gray box with 'OS X Utilities,' then listed various options such as 1. restore from time machine backup, 2. reinstall OS X, 3. get help online and 4. disk utility. what do I do now? I have not backed up to Time Machine in a few days, so I'm not sure I should restore from time machine backup, is there something else I can do? Help!

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...

  • Macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart.

macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart

Sorry I said sorta wrong. I can shut down and I can update to the point of restart but it just sat for 45 minutes after an update. It goes through the update and to restart then the bars chase each other in a circle and it never restarts. So I hit the power button and go through normal reboot but loosing the update in the process. It does not matter how long I wait for a natural reboot after an update or click to restart it will chase the little bar in circles all day literally and never reboot.

  • Macbook pro 2012 shuts down right after start up!

macbook pro 2012 shuts down right after start up. I tried the recovery mode but disk doctor cannot repair Mac osX hard drive. This is the second time that I have to format hard drive and install agin all applications. please advise!

I am not familiar with "disk doctor" but if you used Disk Utility to repair or reformat the hard disk, and it failed again, it is very likely the drive itself needs to be replaced. It cannot be repaired.
If Disk Utility cannot repair a hard disk it definitely needs replacement.
All 2012 MacBook Pro models are less than a year old and therefore covered under Apple's standard one year warranty. Have them fix it.

  • Since I've loaded the creative cloud my MacBook Pro keeps shutting down.  Need suggestions.

SInce I loaded the creative cloud software my MacBook Pro keeps shutting down. Is there a reason for this?

There is not one specific program that it shuts down in, random shut downs and I could be in an Adobe application or another program. It may be be a coincidence, but my shut downs seems to have started after I installed Adobe's Creative Cloud.  Apple now has my laptop exploring what may be causing my issues. Their first reaction was that it could be some sort of software conflict.  I'm waiting on their diagnosis.

  • MacBook Pro keeps shutting down immediately after startup chime

I booted into Windows 7 on my boot camp partition and was about to play Dirt 3 for the 1st time.  I was in the options menu of the game and my MacBook Pro just shut down/turned off instantly.
I turned back on, holding in Option so I could boot into Windows again, but the computer just turned off immediately after the startup chime.  I turned on again, this time I didn't hold in Option, so I could boot into OS X (my default startup volume) and the same thing happened - MBP shut down immediately after the startup chime.  I tried again, same thing.  I tried again, and this time it booted fine into OS X, and all seems ok.
    Any idea what's going on?

Hi. When you were in the recovery drive doing permissions, did you try and run a repair of the boot drive? Did you try single user mode? Try these first and then go back and try to reinstall the operating system. When I say repair boot drive I don't mean permissions. There are both options in disk utilities. When you open disk utilities ,you will see in the left column  two drives plus possibly  a boot partition that look like an external driv. click on the second drive and in first aid use repair disk. If you still can't boot and it will not let you restore, you may have to do a clean install.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18869?viewlocale=en_US

  • My MacBook Pro keeps shutting down before I can even start it up, what do i do?

My MacBook Pro keeps shutting down when the loading-circle appears at start-up. I can only log on to my Bootcamp Windows mode. When i try to format Mac (via command+R) i'm told i'm not allowed to since the disks are locked - Mac is administrator, and obviously I'm not logged in. What do I do?

    Try a SMC reset.

  • Macbook Pro cannot shut down or restart

My Macbook Pro cannot shut down or restart by any means. I have to forcefully shut it down by pressing the shutdown button for a few seconds.
I was told this might be a system problem so I reinstalled the OS X system but the problem not solved.
This is very troubesome as the system update cannot be installed (because the required restart cannot be done).
Can anyone suggest me what I could do next?
    Thank you in advance!
(To add on, my Apple manu seems not working as all. Not only the shut down/ restart function, but also the "About this mac" is not executing anything)
    Ning

If this is happening now for the first time, press and hold the power button for a few seconds to force a shutdown, then press again briefly to restart.

  • MacBook will not Shut Down or Restart

My MacBook will not shut down or restart from the apple menu, nor from any other dialog box that pops up, after an update, for instance. The only way I can turn it off/restart is by using the power button. I have tried archiving and installing OS X, but I am still having this problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

    Hi Henry,
    Help here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Second, make sure you have all your updates. Click the Apple logo in the Menu then click Software Updates.
Reset PRAM by holding option-command-P-R keys down during startup until you hear the chime at least three or four times.
Resetting the PRAM is a standard procedure for the problem you are experiencing.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located here:
Applications/Utilities. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU and reboot.
If you need further assistance, please post back.

  • MacBook will not shut down or go to sleep

My MacBook is not shutting down or going to sleep.
When I try to shut down: The desktop disappears as normal but then the plain blue screens appears (with the little circle down the bottom which spins (not the beach ball)) and it just stays there forever. To shut down I need to hold the power button for 10 seconds.
When I try to put the MacBook to sleep by closing the lid: The light in the bottom right hand corner comes on but it does not "pulse" - suggesting it has not gone to sleep.
When I try to put the MacBook to sleep using the Apple (top left hand) menu: Nothing happens.
I am not 100% sure when this started happening, but I believe it either started happening after:
    a) The firmware update which was supposed to fix the "mooing" problem"; or
    b) One of the system software updates.
If you need my current system/firmware version, you will have to tell me how to do this because I don't know how to find these numbers.
This is really frustrating because I move my laptop around a lot so I would like to be able to use the shut down/sleep functions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First couple things to check is do you have any external drives plugged into the Macbook? My macbook would sleep because I had an external drive that prevented it from sleeping.
Also, check what's loading at Startup. There might be a program that's preventing this. Something that constantly needs internet access would cause this. Open up your System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. See if something in there could be causing the problem.
    Hope that helps a little.

what do I do when my macbook pro just shuts down and when I plug my charger in, it faintly blinks green and yellow and doesnt charge?

    Hi aaliyafrommarkham,
In order to troubleshoot this, I would recommend that you start with an SMC reset. Information on this procedure can be found here:
