MacBook Pro Not Waking Up From Closed Clamshell Sleep
Hey everyone,
I've been having problems with my mid 2009 2.53GHz MacBook Pro 15" not waking up from sleep after I open the clamshell (screen) back up. When I open the screen after letting it sit for a while, I can hear the HDD spinning up and the status light on the bottom of the MacBook turns off (like it normally does when the clamshell is opened), but the screen is black and there is absolutely no response in any key combinations or trackpad taps. I've been having this problem for about a month now and its getting pretty annoying. I've tried a total wipe of the disk and a fresh Lion install with a full TimeMachine restore, but I'm having absolutely no luck. The only thing that can bring the MBP back to life is a hard restart. Sometimes when I hard restart it, it comes back to life right where I let off (basically like when the battery loses all its juice and restores everything thats open), but most of the time, it starts up like a normal boot with no restore. I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue, but its really starting to get on my nerves. Let me know if you have a solution! Thanks!

Unfortunately, I think the logic board is shot on my MBP, and heres why. My lower RAM Slot only reads my ram some of the time, whereas the top slot never has a problem. If I have to restart my Mac because of the above sleeping issue, it only has 2GB of ram, but if I take the sticks out and swap them, it briefly runs with 4GB until the clamshell gets shut again, and its the same slot thats not reading no matter what configuration of RAM I'm using. Ive swapped RAM sticks with multiple people with no luck. If Just take the bottom stick out, everything is fine, but If its only the bottom stick, it only starts up about half the time. If it dosent boot, I get the "Beeps of Death" at startup. As i said earlier, it's probably not the RAM itself thats causing the problem, somethings screwy in my logic board thats preventing it from reading RAM even though it's in the slot. And yes, I made sure the ram was in it's slot all the way.

I just bought a macbook pro yesterday (13 inch) from the Apple Store due to my old 2007 macbook (the 13 inch white one) running slow because of the applications I used. I transferred the old files, and backed all of them up on the 500gb G-Drive external hard drive using time share. I gave the computer to a friend of a friend and no longer have it. When I first turned the new computer on, it gave me the option to restore using a back up disk, like my g drive from timeshare. I chose that and it said it had worked fine. But when I got to the home screen, I couldn't find any of my files. The old computer didn't have lion, it was operating on Snow Leopard. I am trying to figure out how to get my files to show up on my new computer. When I click on my g-drive on my desktop, I see my backups, but all of the folders have the red circle with the negative sign in the middle. I was told to go to disk utility, click on the g-drive and click repair disk, so I did. Still, no progress. I tried using migration assistant and my g-drive wasn't showing, the only icon it showed was the Macintosh HD with the timeshare symbol laying on top of it, I tried doing it that way, again, didn't work. I know how to use a mac, but as far as the technical side, I am truly a beginner. I don't know what to do. I talked to 3 different people from Apple Pro Care over the phone yesterday and they were just as confused as I was. One of them told me that Lion doesn't have Rosetta Stone, so Snow Leopard files cannot transfer into Lion...is this true? I looked up my permissions on my old macbook settings and it said "No" on allowing permissions. If I was told to change it to yes, I would have done that before I gave the computer away. I was on the new computer for over 6 hours yesterday trying to recover my files, still nothing. Can anyone please help?!?! I am really frustrated and lost, any assistance would be greatly appreciated...THANK YOU in advance!!
oops, time machine, not timeshare, lol

MacBook Pros Not waking up properly even after clean re-install
I just bought a used 17" Quad core MBP with 16gb of ram. I installed a samsung 512gb 840 Pro series SSD, transferred all my info from my old dual core i7 17" MBP. So both are 10.8.4.
The new MBP started not waking up from sleep. The keyboard would like up and the light in the front would indicate that it has started, but then it doesn't show anything on the screen.
Ultimately, I decided, i'll just do a clean re-install of OS 10.8 because maybe something went wrong in the migration. Now, with a fresh install when i wake it from sleep it seems to open as if it ran out of power and is doing a restore power up. The screen opens at half opacity and I get some progress dots and its back quickly. But it's still strange. The only thing installed on the computer at all is adobe production suite.
Odd thing is, that the OLD computer, the DUAL core i7 17" MBP is also not waking up from sleep properly now. It also has a new 128gb SSD drive It BTW. It doesn't fully wake up, so I have to hold down the power button, shut it down then turn it back on again. And again it does a recovery startup.
so now I have TWO computers having almost the same issues, and one of them has a fresh install. So what could the problem be? totally diffferent hardware. Does 10.8 not like SSD's in 17" MBP's?
any tips would be apreciated. One last detail, connectivity through my iPhone's hotspot works completely fine. No idea if that is related / helpful in any way.

Macbook pro not waking from sleep
HELP! My macbook pro (2010) is not consistently waking from sleep. I will put it on sleep, then when I open the screen, it will not wake up. I have to press the power button to completely turn it off, then press it again to wake it up. An error message shows saying that it had not been properly shut down. Any ideas on how to correct this problem?
Hello alicool,
The article linked below provides some useful suggestions that can help resolve issues with your Mac waking.

Late 2008 Macbook Pro not waking from sleep
I just go a new MacBook Pro, and occasionally (maybe once a day) after I shut the computer to put it in sleep mode, and walk around with it, It refuses to wake when I open the lid. I have disabled the "put hard disk to sleep" and using the smartsleep preference pain, have put the computer in "sleep only," but the problem still occurs. Whenever this happens, I have to restart my computer with the restart button.
Message was edited by: Alex BernsteinAlex, do you have your preferences set to require a password after sleep or screensaver? Sometimes I have had issues with this dialog window not popping up. Also does the status light on the MBP glow constantly or fade in and out when you lift the lid up? If it is lit constantly and nothing is displayed that means the computer is on...what I do is just close the lid again and then wait for the light to fade in/out and re open, then it usually works.

Macbook Pro not waking up if battery is low (~15%)
My new generation Macbook Pro 13" is not waking after re-opening the closed lid if the battery icon indicates low by red color (I guess it is about 15%) before putting it to sleep.
I mean, if I close lid when the battery icon is red, it does not automatically wakes up from sleep state on re-opening the lid and -interestingly- it neither wakes up by pressing the power button.
It only wakes up from sleeping if I plug to power adapter. That means I am not able to use 15% of my battery if I need to put it sleep when it is low.
Any ideas? Why nobody is helping. By the way I have observed that going to sleep after closing to lid usually takes 20+ seconds. My mbp is pretty new but has problems. :rage:

Why does macbook pro not come back after closing shortly
This has become really annoying. If I close my macbook pro (13 inch from this year...but not the retina) and then decide to open it back up without waiting long enough (maybe just setting it down and then picking it back up and opening it), it becomes a brick until I do a hard reset. Sometimes, if I open and close it over and over again, sometimes it will come back. My 2006ish mbpro never did that, so this is a big step back in my opinion, though, I don't know if it is OS or hardware.
Anyone figure out a way to keep this from happening?Your MBP should, as I'm sure you know, just go to sleep when the top is closed and reawaken immediately when you open the top. This is obviously not happening.
Which version of OS X are you running on your 2012 13" MBP? I would make sure that you've updated the system with the latest upgrades and, perhaps, run the Apple Hardware Test to make certain that it's not a hardware problem.
Good luck,

MacBook Pro not waking form sleep (sometimes)
My Macbook Pro is not waking from sleep (sometimes). To be very specific; the only time this happens is when it goes to sleep automatically, with the lid open, while plugged into the magsafe power cord. When I hit the space bar to wake it, the keyboard lights come on but the screen remains black. I do not have any problems with waking from sleep if I close the lid to force sleep (while plugged in). I also do not have any problems at all, if the computer goes to sleep while running on battery power. (I have had this MBP for about 18 months, the first year I had no issues at all. The problem started shortly after Lion was installed. (I also have a iMac with all the same software, almost identical set up, purchased at the same time as my MBP but have never had any sleep problems with the iMac, none even since Lion install.)
We do not have an Apple Store near us, but I have had the MBP in for service 3 seperate time to our local authorized Apple service/dealer. It is tricky to diagnose, because the problem does not happen every time. On average it won't wake from sleep 1 out of 3 times. Each time the service techs were able to re-create the problem but could not come up with a cause or solution, their only advice was to re-install Lion.
I have tried 2 different re-installs of Lion. (Both times erasing the hard drive first) The first time I did a clean re-install of Lion, then restored all of my data from Time Capsule. That did not work, the problem presisted. So I tried a second clean re-install of Lion and this time I did not restore from Time Capusle, I only re-installed critical docs from a flash drive and re-installed all other software (such as MS Office, Photoshop, etc.) from their original discs. I though this had fixed the problem but within a few days the problem re-occoured.
Any ideas would be appriciated, I have tried almost everything, I have days and days worth of time invested in trying to fix this issue. Thank you!I had this problem with my MacBook Pro for a long time, and fixed it by changing the sleep mode. Here's how:
Open Terminal
Type the following:
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
It should say something like:
hibernatemode 3
Here's an explanation of the different types of hibernate modes:
0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
To change your sleep mode, use the following command:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
(replace 0 with whatever hibernate mode you desire)
For my MacBook Pro, I changed it to 0, and it works great. It's super fast to wake and sleep, which is a plus. The only downside of hibernatemode 0 is that if your battery runs out your computer doesn't hibernate - it shuts off. This doesn't matter, though, because with Lion everything is autosaved, so really hibernate 0 is all plusses. -
Why does my macbook pro not wake up from sleep?
I have a brand new Macbook Pro 13inch. It freezes up when I try to wake it from sleep. I was wondering if there is a fix for this.

MacBook Pro not waking up after being put to sleep
Hey everyone, got a weird question. I bought an external monitor for my MacBook Pro (late 2010, Lion). For the past few days, whenever I put it to sleep using the sleep command in the Apple menu, I come home at night and find that it woke up at some point, started collecting my Growl notifications and IRC messages and just sat there running all day. It's also pretty warm when I pick it up (I'd say about as warm as half an hour of Minecraft gets it, not sure how else to describe it). The monitor is being left plugged in all day, as is a Logitech Unifiying reciever for my house. It's also connected to an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard the whole time.
What the heck is going on? Anyone got a solution? Thanks! The principle is this: whenever your MBP is involved in an operation that keeps it awake, your MBP will keep this command going - until you disable the process. For me, it's the application Printopia; if I have sharing disabled - which Printopia doesn't want me to do - it keeps my machine awake, until I enable sharing.
Your situation is going to take a little invesigation on your part, but I can guarantee you that it's not a system or hardware issue. Systematically, disable or enable functions - typically on Control Panel - until the process is resolved. There's no "wizard" to root out the problem. -

Macbook Pro not waking up with external monitor
I've connected an external display to my MBP. I've been able to work out how to mirror the two.
But when I try to have the lid closed and then wake up the laptop with my wireless keyboard, the external monitor displays the desktop for a moment then also goes to sleep.
No matter how much I punch the keyboard nothing happens.
By the way, when I am running in closed lid mode I have disabled mirror.Think I found a solution.
If I enable System Preferences>Bluetooth>Advanced>Allow Bluetooth Devices to wake this computer...it all seems fine -
MacBook Pro keeps waking from sleep on its own
My MacBook Pro keeps waking itself from sleep for no reason.
I had the battery changed for free by Apple (apparently it's one symptom of a problem with the original battery) but it hasn't abated. (Occasionally it won't wake up from sleep too, but that's rare and so not much of a problem). The main issue is its inability to stay asleep.
Anyone else had this? I can't find any advice anywhere else and the Genius Bar at the only store I can get to is always fully-booked.
Any help much appreciated.

In addition to Michael's ideas, there have been some weird sleep issues caused by a System Preference, and although your issue doesn't sound the same, if you run on AirPort (and not Ethernet) I'd check it out anyway:
-Open System Preferences.
-Open Network.
-Click on Built-in Ethernet (note what it says underneath it: Not Connected or Inactive; Inactive is what seems to have caused the majority of other issues).
-Click the - button at the bottom of the window to delete the original Ethernet pref.
-Click Apply.
-Click the + button.
-For Interface, select Ethernet.
-For Service Name, enter Built-in Ethernet.
-Click on Create.
-Make sure your Location is set to Automatic or AirPort (or whatever you normally have it set to).
-Click on Apply and close Preferences. -
Macbook not waking up from 'sleep'
Hi there,
I got an really annoying Problem with my 4-Month old Macbook Pro and I hope you guys here can help.
My Macbook Pro does not wake up from sleep, the sleep indicator is solid and not pulsating at all.
The strange thing is, when I initiate Standby the sleep indicator is pulsating, also I can wake my mac up. So my macbook is not waking up if it goes to sleep by its self.
In Addition it is possible to wake my macbook up few seconds after it automatically goes to sleep.
But if is goes to sleep automatically and I don't touch it for few hours I cannot wake it up again.
I already did a PRAM, SMC reset. no change.
Maybe I should mention that my macbook pro is hooked up on an external Display. But not directly connected, there is a kvm switch in between. So I can switch between PC1(PC1Display) & MAC1(PC1Display+MAC1Display) Configurations.
any ideas what the problem could be?
Thanks, TimmyXI seem to be having the problem as well.
Occasionally when waking it will work. the machine wakes up to a white screen and a little progress bar at the bottom. then the screen comes back.
other times the screen stays black. it seems the computer itself is not sleeping but the screen is black and the Fkeys don't work to either to either change the dim settings on the monitor or keyboard.
I usually have to force shut down the computer to get it back.
I tried the fix I found online about turing off the ethernet port then re activating it after a restart and that seemed to work.
Then I updated to 10.6.2 (using the combo updater NOT software update) and the problem is back.
I now have done the ethernet off and on fix again. I hope it will wor.
I have found a lot opf people with this problem...
I did a clean install of 10.6 and then used migration assistant for my files and prefs... but not my applications since I was migrating from a powerbook g4.
Maybe some pref or setting that was migrated for many of us is causing it...
Are there others with the problem who are on a NEW mac without any migration?
Hope we can help get to the bottom of this. -
