Macbook Pro on 10.5.8 online banking issues, + failed verify... help!
Macbook Pro (late 2008) 10.5.8
I could not sign in to my online banking (it would sign me back out immediately), and I was told by the bank IT that it is malicious software of some type on my machine.
I ran the Sophos scan (Sophos still supports 10.5.8 until April 2014) and it found nothing.
In disk utilities, I ran "verify" and it came up with:
-Invalid volume file count.
-Invalid volume directory count
-Error:Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have read through The Safe Mac, very helpful... I also disabled Java in both Firefox and Safari. This could be a source for the issues.
I do back up using time machine quite religiously... I am very worried about wiping and re-installing, I have a ton of inter-dependent software working beautifully, and cannot update any of the programs because nothing will work if even one of these programs is updated. So I really am married to 10.5.8, and this particular computer.
I realize it is time to bring my Mac completely offline permanently.
Any help or suggestions as to how to best proceed to keep it happy and keep what I currently have would be great.
Thanks guys/gals!
A "live verify" (ie, a verify performed on the currently-running system drive) in Disk Utility is unreliable. It's likely that you have a problem, but not guaranteed. You'll need to repair the hard drive at a minimum. Instructions are here:
http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
In my experience, repairs aren't always that reliable. In addition, I've been told that modern drives do not have these kinds of problems unless they are failing, but have no personal knowledge relating to that and don't know whether your five-year-old drive would be considered "modern." In any case, though, if it were me, I would probably erase the hard drive and restore from backups if I were you, rather than relying on a repair.
If the repair can't be completed, or if erasing the hard drive doesn't work, or if the problem comes back after erasing or repairing, then the drive is probably failing and will need to be replaced.
Regarding the bank issue, I believe this is either an error on the part of your bank or represents an attempt to hack your bank account remotely. If I were you, I would demand (politely, but firmly) an explanation of what the bank saw that they are identifying as malicious.
I honestly don't know how the bank could possibly identify malicious access, unless they noticed an attempted access from a weird IP address (for example, from an IP address in a different country or belonging to an identity-hiding service), which would indicate a hack not involving your computer. If malware on your computer was attempting access to your bank site, it wouldn't really look any different than a normal access attempt to the bank's site.

I have an MacBook Pro 10.6, using disk utility I tried to verify my disk, but it came up with the message, please use your start up disk, I tried this, starting the computer up and pressing C, but it ejected the disk, the same thing happened while I running the computer. Is the hard drive damaged as laptop doesn't seem to recognize the start up disk ? If so, I presume I will have to put in a new one.
There haven't been any problems with the computer, apart from a sticky curser,I have run a permissions programme from disk utility, there were a lot of different ones, but it seem to be able to fix them.
Any comments or ideas ?
Thank you in anticipation.First backup your users files off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine!)
Most commonly used backup methods
Next to startup from the disk, have it inserted, hold c or option/alt (wired or built in keyboard) and then boot the computer and or select the disk when it appears and click the arrow.
Disk Utility is under the Utilities menu on the second screen.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you used the wrong 10.6 disk, it will spit it out or have issues, use the one that came with that machine or if it's defective, call Apple for a new one. -

My son (31) in an attempt to get me a free version of Mt. Lion instead of the installed Snow Leopard, has deleted all my music and irreplaceable photos. Is there any way to restore my macBook Pro to how it was on 12/22/12? HELP!!!!!
[email protected]Your profile says 10.5.8, that is Leopard and cannot upgrade to Mt.L.
Snow Leopard is 10.6, and the 10.6.8 (latest update) can upgrade directly to Mt.L.
So change you profile.
You do have TimeMachine running, of course. Then restore from TM date 12/22/12 or before.
Or you take it from other backups. -

My macbook pro Retina has got a burn-in issue.
My macbook pro Retina has got a burn-in issue. The device is out of warranty. I reset PRAM but it didn't help.
As per with any computer, a very basic rule of thumb... The more ram. The higher processor speed... The faster and more efficient your machine will be. And since processor upgrades are relatively difficult to do if you're not familiar with the hardware... Then I'd go with a ram upgrade (ie getting more assuming you're not already maxed out)
But shy of any of that, just clean up. Any photo albums, videos, documents you dont need or use anymore.. back them up ten delete them. The same thing with extra apps or programs. Think of it his way, the heavier your backpack gets, the slower you're going to walk. Lighten the backpack, the easier and faster you can walk. So start by cleaning house. (personally I'm a big fn of or matting and re-installing everything every now and again. It may be overkill, but it's one of the best ways to clean.
Start with the free and easy. If you don't get results that you like then go on to some options that have a price tag -
Ever since I received my Macbook Pro in July 2011 I've had issues with my wireless connection at home. After software updates, Apple support suggested I reboot my router which works. But now I have to do it every other day. ???? AT&T my DSL carrier suggests I get a new router. Apparently the one I have is really old and doesn't support my Macbook Pro. Does this sound right?
If your using WEP encryption yes, Apple has discontinued that becaues it's worthless. WEP (and WPA) is cracked so encryption makes no sense.
Get a new Wireless N router, set it up with WPA2 (AES) Personal and two different 20+ randon letter/numbersymbol character passwords
One for Admin access only of the router, keep this on paper off all comptuers in a safe someplace.
One for entering into devices, computers etc for Internet Access Only.
You need the long and random password to defeat brute force attacks by GPU software that the hackers have now.
Also if you give out the password to another, they can't hack the network with the guest access password.
Computers remember the internet password, so anyone with access to your machines or network will have the password.
Since you have another Admin only password, they can't hack in. got it?
You don't need "Invisible" or "MAC Address filtering" that's a waste of time as hackers can sniff a network and causes issues getting on the network.
Good luck. -
MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?
Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?Run an Apple Hardware Test;

Note an error free AHT is not definitive.
install iStat menus:

Set Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets hot, post images of both for inspection.

Which MacBook Pro is best for an online MBA program and face to face classes?
I'm going back to school for an MBA and going to pick up some certifications first. I'll be attending online classes and some face to face classes. How much MacBook Pro do I need? I'm in the HR community, and my MBA is in Global Managment if that helps any.

Any idea what it is? I'd appreciate any sort of diagnose?
My Mac has had some freezing issues before and recently was in repair because of those (memory was changed), but I've never got an error message after a freeze, and I've always had to force shut down it when it freezes. Ran the Apple hardware test couple of times, but nothing found.
I guess I have to reinstall Lion if this continues...Hello V-MA!
I found this webpage: http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc1
by googeling for "com.apple.NVDAResman"
Probably you have to remove the Geforce Grafic drivers as discribed here. But please wait until some others in the forum confirm this.
If you don't understand how to do these commands with Terminal, ask once again for help.
In your message you did not metion, that you just updated 1 hour and something your OS ("System uptime in nanoseconds: 6688834587150"). This is an important information.

Hey there, boys and girls!
As of August 2011, I am the proud owner of a brand new 13 inch Macbook Pro! Being a tech geek, I have always wanted the opportunity to play with OS X, and I was pretty thrilled by my purchase. However, mere weeks after getting my shiny new computer, the wifi issues started. For no reason at all, it would seem as if my connection was dropped entirely, but checking activity monitor showed that the signal had simply capped off at about 6 kb/s. This issue has continued to randomly strike when I am trying to do something online, and almost always when it is something important. These issues have continued throughout the Fall of this year, and school has kept me too busy to actually get hardcore on this problem. The time has come.
I have read **** near every stinking article on the internet about this problem, and tried every solution that I have seen.
Here is the info I have:
*When the problem occurs, opening activity monitor and choosing "Network" shows a graph that maxes out at 6kb/s, sometimes less. There are characteristic spikes of activity, which are usually between 0 and 2 kb/s. It happens COMPLETELY at random, and for utterly variant spans of time. Sometimes it happens 8 times a day, for hours each time; other times, I get it once a day for about 15 minutes. There is no rhyme or reason to it.
*It happens most frequently on my home network. I am using a Netgear Wireless N router (a new one, at that) which I have configured to serve as wireless router and DHCP server for my Verizon router (on which I have disabled wireless and left essentially as a modem). However, the problem has also occurred outside of my home network.
*It's just my Mac. Every other device connected to the network continues to function normally when the cap occurs.
*Whatever data IS moving when the cap occurs is not user data; in other words, I cannot discern the source of the weak trickle of data that continues when the problem happens. During the problem, I cannot ping in terminal, or use any Internet-connected applications or browsers.
Here are some solutions I have tried which did absolutely NOTHING to resolve the problem:
*Rebooting (duh). Problem remains directly following reboot if it was happening right before reboot.
*Turning wifi off and on again (duh some more)
*Using other browsers/networked applications (also duh)
*Erasing all setting connection files so that they are forced to rebuild (4 plist files in library/preferences/systemconfiguartion)
*Erasing and re-adding networks from the remembered networks list
*Repair disk permissions and disk volume from recovery.
*Reset PRAM
*Keep a terminal window running that just pings a remote server endlessly. This basically cuts off as well when the problem shows up.
No combination of the following worked (and I tried each separately and in tandem, when applicable):
*Change the network location to a custom one
*Set a static IP
*Renew DHCP lease after location reset
I'm basically at my wit's end here. I am technically savvy enough to try basically any solution, but I seem to have run out of options. Does anyone have any solutions I haven't tried? The only other potentially relevant thing I can think of is that I did clone my original 320GB HDD over to a 500GB HDD near the start, but that shouldn't have anything to do with this... right?
I remember being eager to get this machine, but this network plague has me missing my broken-down heap of an old PC. For all it's various shortcomings, was at least able to connect to the **** internet consistently. I thought 10.7.2 would fix the problem... but nope. No help from Apple either. I'm pretty sick of this issue already.Hey there, boys and girls!

Macbook Pro 13-inch, mid 2009. Heat Issues
Hi!
What can i do?
I have a macbook pro 13" from 2009.
The fans are always on 1999 RPM, they never go faster, not even when the computer reaches a temperature of 80° Celcius.
As soon as I go to youtube to watch a video, the temperature goes up alot, but the fans stays at 1999 RPM and they refuse to go up. So the computer just gets warmer and warmer.
So I downloaded a program called smcFanControl, and when i watch usually any video on youtube, the temperature goes up to around 64° Celcius with the fans running at around 3500 RPM.
I can forget about watching ANY HD 720p video on youtube, because then the computers temperature reaches at least 70° Celcius even with the fans running at 4000RPM.
I am SO sick of this heat issue.
What can i do?
The room I am in, isnt even warm. My sisters Sony Vaio is at 40° Celcius when watching the same HD 720p video.
And this problem doesnt only occur when I watch HD videos, i get it no matter what video I watch on youtube. Highly annoying.
Why cant my macbook pro control the fans automaticly? Is there any program that i can use so it controls the fans automaticly? Because I am SO tired of controlling the fans all the time, i need to control them when I go to youtube, when i go to expressen.se (Swedish news online), I need to control them when using videocall via skype, yeah almost all the time!
Does anyone have the same problem? Or any idea what to do? It doesnt even matter if I'm downstairs in the livingroom where its really cold, I cant watch videos on youtube without the temperature reaching sickingly 80°celcius, or 64°Celcius with the fan running faster, which I have to do manually by the way.
I would just love for my macbook to control them automaticly, I hate that i have to do it.
Please help.
I run Mac Os X 10.6.3 (Snow leopard), I have a 2,26 Ghz Macbook Pro 13 inch from mid 2009.
SMC-version 1.47f2
Please help,
Kind regardsHi again PatrikK,
The temperature that SMCFanControl reports itself is the CPU A temperature diode one from what I can see. As a test I ran SMCFanControl alongside Marcel Bresink's excellent shareware program "Hardware Monitor" , which provides much more detailed information about temperatures , speeds, power demand, etc etc, than SMC is able to do, to test this and the CPU A temp diode was certainly the closest to the Hardware Monitor readings. On the video pages of the Swedish newspaper site it was generally about 10ºC hotter than the CPU core temperatures, which were generally in the 60'sC, while the CPU A diode was in the 70'sC.
So, with your CPU Diode temp at 80ºC the CPU core temps were probably only at about 70C, which, as I said, is about where the fan speeds actually usually start to increase under normal MacOSX control. (The algorithms used to determine fan speed in Macs aren't actually based on CPU temperature alone, but depend on the readings from various temperature sensors, together with measurement of electrical current draw etc, so no single CPU temperature is responsible)
All in all, when I look back at your earlier post as well, I think your MBP is probably simply operating normally in the situations you mention. It certainly won't be doing it any harm (the maximum CPU core temperatures allowable for the 13" model are either 90ºC or 100ºC, depending on the actual procesor fitted, and this equates to a CPU A temperature diode - the one your software is measuring - of over 100ºC.) At 80º CPU A temperature the fans should only just be starting to increase, and you will find that they cut in quite aggressively from then on in, making sure that the core temperatures are not exceeded.
So I don't think you need to worry about this situation in terms of the computer itself, though you should certainly be able to reduce the temperatures somewhat if you follow the approaches I mentioned with respect to Flash etc in my earlier post.
If your concern is mainly comfort when using the computer, all I can suggest is that you follow Apple's own instructions about these computers being "notebooks", not "laptops", and when using it in a comparatively "high demand" situation such as watching flash videos use it on a desk, or do what I do and simply stick it on a thin plastic or wooden board when it is resting on my knees. There are all sorts of fancy "laptop cooler" devices out there that you can spend money on if you wish, with everything from powered fans to chemically based cooling processes, but I've always found that a light weight $2 plastic chopping board from Ikea does the job perfectly well in such situations!
Cheers
Rod
