MacBook Pro on Base?
I just purchased a new 23" Cinema Display and was wondering if anyone using the foot of the display as also a place to put your PowerBook/MBP? Does anyone else do this? I guess its an odd question - but just wanted to see if this was a bad thing (although I can't see why it would be?)
No, not a mouse pad. They're usually neoprene foam, which is thermally an insulator, which is not what you are trying to accomplish. The thing I am talking about is more like those bags of gel they sell that you put in the freezer and then you can use them in place of ice in a portable ice chest. I bought one a long time ago that was specifically designed to be placed beneath a notebook computer to absorb and spread heat from it. It's really thin, like 4 or 5 mm thick. I have since looked to buy another but they seem to have disappeared from the market.
The closest thing I have seen since have been small, gel filled band-aids and sports wraps sold at drugstores. But they are usually odd shapes. There is also this thing, but it looks kind of thick:
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=139635&catid=44690&aid=280302&apa ram=df5628
Ideally you just want something thin, thermally conductive and soft (so that it doesn't harm the notebook's finish). I tried to find thermally conductive silcone rubber pads. They exist but are sold as commercial goods. I couldn't find any retail sales of that material.

Upgraded standard macbook pro vs base macbook pro with retina?
So I'm getting a new Macbook pro for college and the two I'm looking at are about the same price with different benefits. I'm looking for a versatile computer for everything I will do in college. I dont run any super intense photo programs or video editors, I just game and am a standard user. Also I plan on running bootcamp and playing some games on the computer. It's between:
-a Macbook Pro with retina display
base specs of 8gb RAM and 2.3ghz processor and I would also buy an external optical drive
The only Cons are that im not sure if 256gb SSD is enough for boot camp and everything i would be doing
-Macbook Pro Standard 15in
2.6ghz processor and 8gb RAM
750gb HDD 7200rpm
The price comes out to about the same so im really torn between a retina/portability vs 2.6ghz processor and optical/ethernet
so basically 2.6ghz vs. 2.3ghz and 750gb HDD vs 256 SSD
any help?If you are going to load a lot of Windows games, your would probably need the larger HD. If you are using it primarily for school work, internet then 256 SSD is probably enough. I have a Windows partition on the retina version with 256 SSD, and have 140 GB remaining free. But I do not game and use Windows only for Quicken. If you are a student and are going to be carrying around your computer a lot, you might appreciate the lighter weight of the MBP with retina display. However, other poster are correct, there is no upgrade path with either MBP.

I am trading in my 2009 macbook pro so now I am trying to pick the one I want. I stream a lot of movies and tv shows off of netflix but otherwise I'm just an average computer user.
Cores and speed ...
Multiply cores by the speed to get "maximum therotical processing power". Example:
2.8 dual = 5.6 max
2.2 quad = 8.8 max
Plus quad-core usually have hyper-threading which can double that maximum speed. And quad-core systems have slightly faster internal caches and other memory buses.
In theory. Usually even the heaviest programs will not max out, but it will have a higher maximum.
If you can afford the quad-core, it gives a bit longer usable life. -
MacBook Pro 17" base uneven and rocks back and forth
Have had my MBP Core2 Duo 17" for about three weeks. It was rocking back and forth on the table I was using it on - I assumed the table was uneven.
It happens on every table I place it on - I really don't think this should happen - the base should be perfectly even and level - obviously it has a "bow" in it.
Anyone else had this issue?Mine had the very same problem.
I had a genius at the local Apple store check it out (bought the stock model). He said that if you can slide a stack of 3 business cards below any of the corners then it is considered to be a defect. In my case you could and they gave me brand new one.
That said, the next one while sitting level on any surface had several Kernel panics. This time I returned it for a full refund (typing this on my 12" iBook...). -
Macbook Pro 2015 Base line model, screen tearing and scroll "lag"
When I scroll up and down I notice "screen lag" in where in applications folder scrolling up and down the icons look slow and sluggish. When I move windows left and right up and down you can see screen tearing, a line mid way of the window when moving it up and down or left and right with heavy ghosting. Am I crazy or my macbook has issues?
Your MBP is under warranty. Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have it repaired.

New Retina Macbook pro 15 base model has no option for dGPU?
I really wanted to get a rMBP 15 inch with a dedicated graphics chip, 16 gb of ram and 2.0 or 3.3 ghz processor but only 256 GB of ram.
But I did not see any option for that. I assumed that the discrete graphics would be optional for the 15 inch but it ended up only in the high end version.
Why is that?I have done what you suggested. However, I have to disagree with you about the 'third party' comment. Although those minor issues were on there which I picked up on shortly afterwards, they were easily removed. It hasn't CHANGED the symptoms I described about my mac. Both items are removed (growl only tends to make your mac 'lag' and that's not the problem I'm having)
I am still having all the above issues, regardless of my mac being fully minus third party items. This mac hasn't had any heavy use, or had many applications installed on it ect, there is really no reason for it to be failing. I'd understand if it was old, but it's literally only just passed being 3 years old.
If you can provide any more help that would be appreciated, thank you! -
Windows Refuses to boot from 2 brand new Macbook pro 13 2011 model laptops
I'm having the same problem.
I bought a macbook pro 13inch 2.3 ghz core i5 base model yesterday. I gave it the normal windows partition as i normally do with all my macs and tried to install Win7.
The installation was ok except that it took the macbook pro like 40 seconds to finish showing the Black screen with the blinking cursor .
I then Installed Bootcamp 3.2 and restarted, it took its normal 40 secs to show the black screen and blinking cursor after i had selected windows to boot and then it restarted!
I tried 4-6 times but it keeps giving me the same result.
I then reformatted 4 times both the Windows and Mac partitions and tried to repeat the windows installation but it kept giving me the same result.
A friend of mine bought his macbook pro 13 base model today and when i tried installing, it gives the same result! What is wrong?
I then installed Parallels 6 on both laptops and immediately it booted the already installed windows partition.(*but i don't want to use parallels )
But when i restart and hold down the option key and choose windows, it keeps giving me the black screen with the blinking cursor and the restarts itself.
I have used 10 or more macbook pros and airs in the past and they've never given me this sort of problem.
What is wrong???Having Windows on GPT and EFI; not having default OS set to Windows.
Having boot options in msconfig set to default (30 seconds) instead of reducing to 5 seconds (if present, it may not be).
40 seconds is slightly longer I guess for you than OS X but people with trouble are reporting 1-4 minutes. I think 40 is in normal range. -
'14 -- 13" Macbook Pro Retina Temperature
Hey Guys,
I recently bought a 2014 13" Macbook Pro Retina base model [2.6 GHz i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD] and I am having a temperature issue. When watching videos (Hulu/Youtube) at 480p the computer will reach temperatures of to 80-90 °C. Sometimes it will even reach about 99 °C to the point where I do not feel comfortable to keep playing the video. I am currently updated at the time [10.10.1] of this posting with also using the latest version of Google Chrome.
My brother has an ultrabook (windows) computer. I can't remember the model number of the Acer, but it has an intel 1.6 GHz i5-4200U, 8GB RAM, Raid 0 x2 128GB SSDs @ 2560 by 1600 pixels 13". His ultrabook (with a weaker/slower CPU and 4400 intel graphics [compared to the Iris 5100 in mine]) can handle 20+ tabs and watch a 480p video (Hulu/Youtube with Chrome) without going above 55-60 °C.
It seems with those numbers that my i5 should be able to downclock and keep a lower temperature then his Acer. It feels like the computer is just running too hot, either to a bad cooling system design or most likely due to a poorly applied thermal compound between the heatsink and CPU. I'm not 100% sure if my thoughts are founded true in the community and would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and to what action do I have to take to resolve this issue without opening the laptop up itself.
Thank you for your time,
-Fellow Mac UserGoogle Chrome is a resource hog and has a poor record of compatibility with OSX. Use Firefox, Opera or Safari instead and that will help woth your temperature problem.
the temperatures that you are reporting are not unusual for video on a MBP. If you are nervous about them, use a cooling pad. Note that there are sensors that will shut down the MBP before it commits Hari Kari due to overheating.

Internet problem with New Airport Extreme base and new Macbook Pro
So I bought a Airport Extreme base station with my new Macbook pro.
My desktop system uses a DSL modem which is connected to my computer via an ethernet cable. It works flawless. I can also unhook the hard ethernet connection from the desktop and connect it to the Macbook Pro with no problems.
I then connected the ethernet cable from the DSL router to the WAN port on the Airport Base.
I have no problem gettiing the Macbook pro to set itself up on the Airport Network. I can NOT, though, access the internet. I even tried to type in the IP address for the DSL modem while connected to Airport base and can not connect to modem. Does anyone have any advice? Is there a bridging function in the Airport Base that has to be activated?
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
Thanks,
DannyI have no problem gettiing the Macbook pro to set itself up on the Airport Network. I can NOT, though, access the internet. Make sure you perform a complete power recycle when switching network components.
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the DSL modem & AEBS. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, and your DSL ISP requires PPPoE for connectivity, you will need to set that up on your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as follows:
Connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
Internet tab
- Connect Using: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
- Account Name: <ISP account name>
- Change password: <ISP password>
- Always stay connected (checked)
- WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
No, the AEBS will no longer be required. -
MacBook Pro can't find AirPort Express base station
My friend gave me an AirPort Express and I've set it up as a base station before. But the other day it was having problems and I reset it. Since then I have not been able to set up a base station. When I try to set up a new base station through the AirPort Setup Assistant I get the message "The AirPort Setup Assistant was unable to find your base station." I have tried soft resets, hard resets, and even factory resets, but I can't get the base station set up. Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)I face a similar problem - the default name of the Airport Express is shown, Internet-Access works, but no way to administrate the Station - it is "not found", although it displays the name of it before. Frustration!

Kernel panics on base model of late 2014 macbook pro
Hello!
My girlfriend's macbook pro retina 15'' late 2014 base version 10.9.5 gets a kernel panics. She thinks it happens when she surfs the web with Google Chrome but also has other programs open. It has happend from the day first at random times and about 5 times since. Nothing external is attached to the computer and we have not modified the hardware.
I have the error logs for last two. Maybe you can help me find the problem or tell if I should take it in under the warranty.

If the Macbook Pro is still getting Kernel Panics, I would use the other troubleshooting in the following article about troubleshooting these issues, named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

How do I install base system on external drive to boot MacBook Pro?
I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo. I use an external HD for storage. Want to make external drive bootable (i.e. to run apps like DiskWarrior on MacBookPro).
How do I install the base system?
Thank you.First, be sure the external drive is partitioned using the GUID partition scheme. If it isn't then you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase anything you have on the drive.
Second, the external drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Last, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and install OS X onto the external drive. Do not do an Erase and Install if you don't want to erase the external drive. You can customize the installation to omit any additional components you don't need such as language localizations, Asian Fonts, unneeded printer drivers, etc. -
How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!
Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Click Time Machine
Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format. -
My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software. I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.
This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it? -
My macbook pro keeps crashing when i press on the base
For the last couple of weeks my MacBook pro 13" mid-2012, (running OSX Yosemite, 4gb ram, i5 processor) has been crashing and freezing whenever I move it, or pick it up from the mother board side. The base of my mac is a bit loose, and wont tighten, when I pick my mac up from the base, the screen freezes and coloured lines come across the screen then I have to shut it down using the power switch. Sometimes it just restarts whenever I do heavy work on it such as use logic pro, or Photoshop, after this when it starts up it says "your mac restarted because of a problem" I recently had it serviced (by western computers) and had a replacement hard drive ribbon put in place, the service came back fine with no issues, I haven't dropped it, i'm just a bit concerned as all my coursework is on there and I don't want to loose it. Any advice is much appreciated.
You might log the kernel panic per these instructions:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753
and run an Apple Hardware Test:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
(note that an error free AHT is not definitive)
This may provide clues as to why these issues are happening.
Ciao.
