Macbook pro or air. Which to buy

13 inch Macbook pro retina 8gb/256gb or fully loaded 13 inch air 256gb? I want to get into ios app development so I plan on using xcode quite a bit. Also im a compsci major and will be graduating  in december. I plan on doing a lot of programming in various programming languages. Other uses will ideal college student uses ie writing papers surfing the web etc. Im leaning more towards mbpr because i keep hearing non retinas will be a thing of the past very soon. Also the mbp is supposed to be a little more powerful than the air which i think will be a plus when programming. i know this is a FAQ but i had to ask due to my specific needs.
Also i WAS going to wait for the big updates on mbpr but intels delays are a bit harsh. Idk if i can wait til mid 2015.
Thanks in advance

willecicci,
programming, writing papers, surfing the Web, &c. can all be done on older MacBook Pros. Both Mavericks and Yosemite (and thus Xcode) can be run on MacBook Pro models going back to 2007. If you’d rather wait for a big Intel update, then you could purchase a used MacBook Pro now, and sell it once a new MacBook Pro is offered with your preferred Intel hardware.

  • Buying new macbook pro...which to buy?

I'm currently in the process of purchasing a new MBP. The only thing I really use my computer for work, school, internet streaming/ downloading, music and the occasional photo editing.
im looking to get a 15" mbp, but which one is best for what I need?

For your needs I'd 2nd Sig's suggestion, if you still want a 15" then get the base model. Your needs don't warrant anything more powerful based on what you've said.

  • Macbook Pro or Air for business & personal use

I am interested in the 13 inch.  I have only used Windows PCs so far.  I primarily use Microsoft Outlook and Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).  I VPN into my corporate network and browse the Internet.  I have Outlook open all the time along with an Office application and a couple of browsing sessions.  I would also like Windows 8 installed, if possible, side by side.  I rarely watch movies on my laptop and never play games.
I am confused (due to the deluge of information online) between Macbook Pro (not Retina) and Air.  I am looking for recommendations alongwith a few answers.  Is 4 GB sufficient for my multi-tasking needs?  Is 128 GB enough (my disk usage is very very minimal, less than 25 MB) but I will be installing Microsoft Office and (optionally) Windows 8 (not mandatory)?  I use a DVD drive very rarely - will an external drive be good enough if I go with the Air?
PS:  Best Buy has a $200 discount on Air and a $100 discount on Pro which initiated my interest to buy a Macbook.

Why am I not surprised that you would say that. Please read the question, he asked for people's opinion on whether to get a MacBook Pro or Air.

    Thank you so much community.

It will run. If you really want to game, off course you should but a 15 inch MBP and get you're Steam on, or buy a *couch* PC, or gaming console.
You could get all next-gen consoles for the price of a new MBP (well maybe all of them)
And eveyone of these options can play the games you want!

  • Macbook Pro or air for a college engineering major

Hi.  Im looking for a new laptop for college and was wondering which would be better for a mechanical engineering major: macbook pro or air?  I will be running programs like solidworks and auto CAD and was wondering if i needed the extra processing power of the MBP.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air forums. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

That is Pages for iPad v2.0, which Pages '09 v4.3 can't read.
You need to either stick with the older version of Pages on the iPad or get Pages 5 for the Mac which is only available if you are running OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
Unfortunately that is not the end of your woes because Apple has made iCloud convert the files to Pages 5 now, and Pages 5 has over 90 features deleted on top of doing a shocking job of converting older Pages files.

This is not a Mac/Apple issue.  You need to contact the seller and ask where the Windows XP product key is.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2007 which sometimes goes berserk writing the letter 'h' in a word processor. It stops when I hit the delete key for a while. Also can't use the letter 'h' in a word processor. The computer makes a fast tapping sound when not in a doc, in any application or in the finder or when a application is running. Sometimes when this is happening I cannot control the cursor. I have to hit the 'delete' key to proceed. Does anyone know anything of this?

macbook pro user wondering which OS update I should have right now

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You indicate that you have got an Early 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, so you should have got OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or 10.9 (Mavericks). You can check this in  > About this Mac.
If you want to upgrade to OS X Mavericks, open the Mac App Store and download Mavericks. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • 2011 Macbook Air 13" or 2011 Macbook Pro 17"? Which to get?

Hello there, I just bought my 2011 17" macbook pro exactly one week ago from Best Buy (They have a 36 month 0% financing deal going on at mine) and I just downloaded and installed OS X Lion on it yesterday and I'm pretty happy with it. HOWEVER,if there's one thing Apple knows how to do and so well, it's market. I'm kind of drooling over the new 13" Macbook Air (1.7Ghz, 4gb Ram, the high end one) that they just released and now I'm completely torn on which one I should get. I usually have a whole lot of music and pictures on my mac (about 15gb worth...i guess not that much really) and I mostly use it for emailing, web-surfing, networking, etc...But I also like to do some casual gaming like with N.O.V.A. 2, etc. I just need opinions on what the best choice would be for me? I know the Air has a smaller screen and all and that its performance will be less than that of the 17" Pro, but given all that i'm still torn as I dont know which I would like better. I like the fact that the air powers on instantly, its a little more portable (even though I hardly ever move my macbook rpo unless its from the table to my bed) I guess I'm just trying to get ideas on which everyone else prefers or what they would recommend?

It's real difficult to compare those two models, because you have an uneven playing field in the HDD category. The speed and responsiveness of the SSD in the MacBook Air is a real game changer. But the overall CPU/GPU horsepower package in the 17" will absolutely destroy the lower powered 1.7 (or 1.8) i5/i7 with the paltry Intel 3000 HD GPU.
Day-to-day usage, again due to the SSD, would definitely give the impression that it's faster, snappier and more responsive. But in games, even like N.O.V.A 2 the dedicated GPU would really shine.
For what you use the machine for, I'm honestly surprised you went with the 17" MBP in the first place. That's a beast of a machine, sounds very overkill for what you've described.
