Macbook Pro or Desktop for CS6 Studio?

I've just switched from FCP and am trying to decide b/t three options. I'll be using Premiere mostly, but with a bit of AE, Photoshop, and probably some others once I learn them. So the options are:
1- Desktop #1
3.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
32 gigs RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Superclocked 1280 MB GDDR5 Graphics Card (or a EVGA GeForce GTX570 HD 2560MB GDDR5 SLI Ready Graphics Card)
120-250 SSD as boot
Gigabyte Intel Z77 Dual Thunderbolt ATX Motherboard
Video video storage through external SSD through USB3.0 (Thunderbolt possibly later)
- can't do internal for video storage. Will have to buy two desktops, one for work and one for home.
2- Desktop #2
3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
16 gigs RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Superclocked 1024 MB GDDR5 SLI Ready Graphics Card
120-250 SSD as boot
Gigabyte Intel H77 LGA 1155 AMD CrossFireX DVI/HDMI Dual UEFI BIOS ATX Motherboard
Video video storage through external SSD through USB3.0 (Thunderbolt possibly later)
- can't do internal for video storage. Will have to buy two desktops, one for work and one for home.
3- 2012 nonRetina Macbook Pro
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
16 gigs RAM
512 SSD as boot
Video drive will either be another internal SSD (with an OWC data doubler) or external with a SSD through USB3.0 (Thunderbolt possibly later)
Intertestingly, two of the Desktop #1 would only be slightly more expensive than the Macbook Pro and I could get 3 of the Desktop #2 for the same price. I would have to buy 2 of the desktops if I went that route as I need a solution for work and home.
So, what I really want to know is what would be the performance difference amongst the three options. I would image the desktop solutions would be faster than the Macbook Pro (believe they have better video cards) but how much faster practically? I like the options of a portable studio in a laptop, but lugging it around is tiresome and the performance of my 2009 17" MBP (8 gigs RAm, Core2Duo 2.8, 1 TB 5400 Boot, 750GB video drive in Data Doubler) has been way too slow in FCP.
Thanks ahead of time for any thoughts or suggestions!

Thank you both for the help. The problem is I need either portability or duplicates. I live and work in different cities and I edit in all of them so I need either a laptop to drag around everyday or 3 separate workstations (1 for home in city #1, 1 for home in city #2, and 1 for my office in city #2). I love the idea you suggested, JFPhoton, about the RAID 0, but it's probably too problematic in my situation. I'd have to have 3 separate RAID 0s set up and duplicate media on them as well. This would like result in confusion at some point trying to make sure they're all identical. So, even if I went with the 3 workstations, I'd need portable storage and was considering a two drive SSD raid.
It's an odd situation, for sure. So what I was wondering is which is a better solution, ie are the workstations really that much better that they're worth the extra money, is the laptop's performance going to annoy me the way it current does trying to edit ProRes 1080p on a single HDD, etc. Any thoughts?

  • Is macbook or macbook pro the best for logic studio

I was wondering if i just bought a macbook and maxxed it out would pro logic 8 run good on it or should i just invest in a macbook pro? I guess my question is what is the difference in the 2 as pertaining to running pro logic studio? I would also be installing battey and the komplete synth line from native instruments as well..just to verify my usage.....thanx

Lots of people are running Logic Studio on MBs with no trouble. I'd definitely max out your RAM if you're using Komplete. And you probably want the biggest hard drive you can get, so that Logic doesn't take up all the space on it--some of the content can be installed on an external, but a lot of it has to be on your system drive.

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.

Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Set up home sharing between macbook pro and desktop pc. tried to sync music in library but ipod is not syncing the library. why not?

I set up homesharing between macbook pro and desktop pc.  I have attempted to sync songs on my mac and pc, but the ipod will not sync the full library.  why not?

    Hey harold WD!
You will want to consolidate your entire library onto one computer using Home Sharing in order to sync all of these items onto your iPod. Use the following article to help you accomplish this:

I recently purchased a macbook pro and qualified for the free Mountain Lion update.  Now that I've received the very long content code from Apple, where do I go to enter this information?  Is there a link within apple.com?  This is my first apple computer so I'm not a proficient user.  Thank you

Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID. App Store should be in the Dock.

As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

Where can I download a macbook pro install dvd for my Macbook pro 2.2 because i lost mine...

I don't think you can actually download the install DVD. If you call Apple they can send you the install DVD for a nominal fee +S&H. You will need to provide them with the serial number for your Mac to see if it's registered to you.

  • Is there any possible way I can download Microsoft powerpoint on my MacBook Pro OS X for free? I need it for lots of projects of my school.

    Dear Apple Inc.
I would like to know if there is any possible way I can download Microsoft Powerpoint on my MacBook Pro OS X for free? I hope you can reply as soon as you can so I can be able to do all the projects being presented to me from school on Microsoft Powerpoint.
    Thank you,
         April Navarro

These are user forums. You are not speaking to Apple here. You cannot get MS products for free. You can purchase the student version of Office for OS X from MS. You can download a 30 day free trial that you can fully activate by purchasing a license key for $139.00.
You can download a free copy of Libre Office which is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows but runs on Macs. I don't know how compatible the presentation module is to Powerpoint.

  • Is it possible to have 2 mail programmes on my macbook pro? one for business related emails and one personal. I dont want all the emails in one mail programme!

Is it possible to have 2 mail programmes on my macbook pro? one for business related emails and one personal. I dont want all the emails in one mail programme. At the moment i have 2 personal email address being sent to my mail but because of receiving huge numbers of work emails it would be good to keep them seperate, what is the best way of doing this?

if i use the one mail programme can it separate the incoming mail from the different email accounts into 2 folders without me having to do it manually?
Yes, you can.  Nearly all email software can do this.  It involves creating two folders and a Rule for each folder.
Maybe call one folder Personal Mail, the other Work Mail (Apple Mail calls folders Mailboxes).  One Rule would route all mail from your personal email account into the Personal Mail folder; the other Rule would route all mail from your work email account into the Work Mail folder.  It's actually easy to do, all you have to do is click a few things and the rule is set up.  Once the Rule is written you can also apply it to existing messages already downloaded to your Mac.
In Apple Mail, Rules are under Preferences > Rules.  Follow the prompts to create a rule like this:
    If = Any
Account = my Personal account (select the name of your personal email account)
Perform the following actions: Move Message to Mailbox = my Personal Mail (select the name of your Personal Mail folder (aka mailbox))
This rule says,  "take any message that comes in from my Personal Account and move it to my Personal Mail mailbox (folder)"
Create a similar rule for your Work email.

  • How do I secure erase macbook pro 2012 retina for resale

How do I secure/erase and set to factory settings 15" Macbook Pro 2012 retina) for resale?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Be sure you disable or turn off iCloud. Deauthorize the computer in iTunes. Remove any Firmware Passwords you may have configured. Turn off FileVault if enabled.

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

  • My MacBook Pro is asking for a password, when trying to play DVD. Anybody experienced that before.

One of user's MacBook Pro is asking for a password, when trying to play DVD. Anybody experienced that before?
Maybe the DVD itself is password protected, the user is travelling abroad.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi m,
My guess is the DVD is from another region than the one the optical drive is set to. Region changes are limited to 5 total, so it asks for the admin password to make sure you want to do it/allow it. After #5, the drive is locked to that region forever.
